Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Maritime Museum. Now before we begin our tour, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the museum.

As you can see, it’s a very modern building and it was in fact opened by the Prime Minister of Australia in November 1991.

The education centre is on the top floor and there is a good little library, which you might like to use.

The theatre is on the first floor. It’s used to screen videos of special interest and we also use it for lectures. There’s a continuous video showing today about the voyages of Captain Cook, so come back here later on if you want to learn more about him.

Now, I’d like to tell you about a special gallery known as the Leisure Gallery. This is one of our permanent exhibitions. In it, we try to give you a sense of the many different ways Australians enjoy their time on the sea, such as surfing, swimming, and lifesaving clubs. These are all very much a part of Australian culture.
