Paul is also my best friend, whom is the same age as I. He is good for swimming and fishing. I still remember last year he catches a very big fish. Every time we go boating, my father drives the boat. Sometimes he drives them really fast when we are sitting in front of the boat. We are very excited and happily. My mother always brings a lot of fruits and snacks. When we are hungry or thirsty, and we can eat them.

Everybody is afraid of something. That’s what more than 1,700 kids told us when we asked them about fears and scary stuff. We gave kids a list of 14 scary things and asked which one frightened them most. Here are the top 5 answers from our survey (调查):① Scary movies and TV shows;②Scary dreams;③Thunderstormshurricanes(飓风)and other horrible weather;④War and terrorism (恐怖行动);⑤Sounds heard at night.

But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. And what makes one person scared can be of no big deal for someone else. Plenty of kids said their biggest fear wasn’t on our list.

What is fear?

Fear is a feeling that everyone has—it’s programmed into all of us—and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us. We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. The baby criesand their mom comes over to comfort him or herhelping the baby feel safe and OK again.

Real vs. Pretend

The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it. As kids get olderthey understand more and start seeing the difference between what is real and unreal. So when William’s imagination leads him to think of witcheshe can tell himself“Wait a minute. They’re only pretend things. I don’t need to worry about them.”

The same goes for the dark. A kid’s imagination can start playing tricks when the lights go out. What’s under my bedIs that a thief I hearWith the help of a parentkids can get more comfortable in the dark. Using a nightlight or shining a flashlight under the bed to see that there’s nothing there can help kids fight that fear.

1.What did the writer find out from the survey?

A.Some people have never experienced fear.

B.Kids don’t like watching scary movies.

C.All people are afraid of something.

D.People often cry loudly when they are scared.

2.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The list of fears is not complete.

B.The things people fear are of no big deal.

C.Kids have more fears than people think.

D.People are afraid of different things.

3.In the writer’s opinion________.

A.having a sense of fear is not a bad thing

B.babies have a weak sense of fear

C.fear is not something that we are born with

D.not all people can react to dangerous things

Most people know that listening to music when they are feeling down or depressed can encourage their spirits.

However studies have also shown that music, especially certain tones can reduce stress. Music can change brainwave patterns, deepen breathing and bring on a totally stress-free and more open mindset(心态). Using music to relax when considering a particular problem may not only raise your mood, but also could help you reach that "a-ha" moment and find a solution.

Music has also been shown not only to make you feel good, but also, to be a great motivator. For example, during exercise, get you to exercise more by helping you to ignore negative feelings of tiredness and focus on the pleasurable feelings you get from being absorbed in the music.

Music is mainly used to record emotion. When we listen to a piece of music we share the artist's feelings on a visceral (未来的) level. That can be sad, and who among us hasn't put on a painful love song to share in the misery after a bad breakup? On the contrary, we can share in the delight of songs of joy and happiness, or any song or piece of music that reminds us of a particular happy time in our past. So next time you are feeling down, put on Beethoven s Ode to Joy, I bet you will feel a lot better about whatever it was that was bothering you.

1.We can infer from the first paragraph that music can

A.benefit you in many ways

B.promote you to find more questions

C.change the patterns of your lifestyle

D.influence your attention to a problem

2.When we enjoy a piece of sad music

A.we’ll share the artist's feelings deeply

B.we may recall our miserable past

C.we may be reminded of particular joy

D.well show mercy on the artists life

3.What's the best title of the text?

A.Why people love sad music B.Why people love happy music

C.What kind of music is popular D.How music changes your life

It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War III. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.

“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she bemoans all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of fame (名声) or salary.

I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

A.doesn’t want the writer to major in English.

B.doesn’t think the writer should be a doctor.

C.gets along very well with the writer.

D.doesn’t think working in the science field is a good idea.

3.The underlined word “salary” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _____________.

A.scholarship. B.reputation.

C.money. D.power.
