Cancer signs differ depending on which p...

Cancer signs differ depending on which part of the body is affected by a tumour(肿瘤). It’s been said that your height could shows whether you’re at risk of a deadly tumour. Are you more likely to get cancer if you’re tall or short?

Cancer is a deadly condition that is caused by cells growing and reproducing uncontrollably. These cancerous cells can destroy the surrounding healthy cells and organs. Having an unhealthy diet, smoking and not doing enough regular exercise are all risk factors(因素)for cancer.

But people are also more likely to develop cancer if they’re taller. Dr Leonard Nunney, from the University of California Riverside said taller people are more at risk of several different types of cancer.

“For every 10cm in height, the risk increases by about 13 percent for women, and about 11 percent for men,” he said. “The link may be caused by taller people having more cells in the body. One of the major assumptions was that something happening early in life was making your cells easier to suffer from cancer and causing you to be tall incidentally.” Nunney told The Guardian.

“It is not quite right that cancer comes from an unhealthy diet or the fact that your parents happen to be tall. Actually, only a large number of cells cause that to come about. Taller people have an increased cell division rate, which could increase the risk of cancer,” warned Nunney.

However, Cancer Research UK said people didn’t need to worry about their height. A number of studies over the years have shown that taller people seem to have a little higher risk of cancer. This study suggests it’s because taller people are made of more cells, so there’s more potential for one of them to go wrong and become cancerous. But the increased risk is small and there’s plenty you can do to reduce the risk of developing cancer such as not smoking and keeping a healthy weight.

1.Who is more likely to develop cancer?

A.A person who is too short.

B.A person with a light diet.

C.A person whose parents are shorter than others.

D.A person who takes little exercise.

2.What can we infer from Nunney’s view?

A.Shorter people have more cells in their body.

B.Men are more likely to get cancer than women.

C.Taller people are more likely to develop some kinds of cancer.

D.Women are more concerned about their health than men.

3.What does the underlined word“that”in paragraph 5 refer to?

A.The right B.Diet. C.A number. D.Cancer.

4.Which of the following does Cancer Research UK agree with?

A.More and more people are suffering from cancer.

B.People can form a good habit to reduce the risk of developing cancer.

C.People should control their height to reduce the risk of having cancer.

D.More and more people are focusing on their height.

Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, turned 200 years old in 2018! It has been called the first true work of science fiction and the first English horror novel. The story has been told over and over again—not just in books, but in movies and television shows. To celebrate, New York City s Morgan Library & Museum has a special exhibit on the writer and the book.

The reason for the success is that Doctor Frankenstein and his creature, the monster, live on in numerous remakes, shows, and even comic books.

Mary Shelley’s classic is one of the most famous horror stories of all time. But Frankenstein is so much more than that. It presents ideas or themes that are still important today. Knowing something about her suffering can help readers have a good knowledge of her work. Shelley wrote the book when she was only 18 years old. And it relates to her own sad life. Her mother died 10 days after she gave birth to her. She knew what it meant to be a child without a mother. It is no surprise that Shelley wrote a story about a motherless creature one that is very much alone in the world.

Losing her mother shortly after her birth in 1797 was only part of her life story. Mary Shelley gave birth to four children, but only one child survived to adulthood.

Around the age of 17, she fell in love with the poet Percy Shelley. The two writers got married in 1816. However, the marriage of Percy and Mary Shelley was short-lived. Her husband died in a sailing accident in 1822. She was still in her twenties when she became a widow. In some ways, it’s not entirely surprising that she ended up with a story about a monster without a mother.

After the publication of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley continued to write. She died from brain cancer on February 1,1851. Her most important legacy is a monster that is still very much alive today.

My wife and I were down at the beach and trying to find a place to park in one of the many, and somewhat expensive, public parking lots. We were trying to get down to the beach in time to watch the sunsetone of my all time favorite things to do. After several failed attempts, we finally found one spot in the last lot so we pulled into the only space available.

As we were about to pay the price of parking there, a woman came up to us and said she had just paid for two hours(all the time we needed) but she had just been called back home and asked if we would like to have her parking pass. She refused to take any money for it and insisted that we take it. We gladly accepted it and thanked her for her kindness.

It was truly a “paying it forward” experience that we have often done, but one that hasn’t been done to us that often. I smiled at her with such gratitude. It was more than the price of the parking pass. Accepting the kindness of others is part of this process. We felt that and blessed by that kindness.

We got down to the beach in time to watch the sun setting because of this woman’s kindness and we were so grateful. It was a wonderful experience and the sunset was such a wonderful sight

Nice Places in America

The Doaks’ House in Waterford, Ohio

In the small town of Waterford, Ohio, one local household stands out. One fall Saturday every other year or so, Roger and Shirley Doak open their doors for family, friends and strangers. Since the 1960s, they’ve turned a day devoted to making apple butter into an all-day event. They start the fire at dawn, then take turns stirring it, and have a buffet until sunset. By the end of the day, they’ve created apple butter together.

Pflugerville High School, Texas

In a school of about 2,300 people, students love each other, regardless of race or ability. Perhaps the school spirit comes from events like Pay It Forward Day, which rewards students for kindness or the Coats for Kids Drive, a competition challenging schools to donate the most coats-which Pflugerville has won for the past six years.

Oriole Park in Baltimore, Maryland

Sure, Oriole Park in Baltimore, Maryland, is a fun place to watch a baseball game with a family. But this stadium goes beyond rooting for the home team; it also roots for acts of kindness. During weekend games, one of the nicest students to catch our eye was a middle school boy named Thomas Moore who grew his hair long enough to donate it to children with cancer.

Rock Hall, Maryland

The sign to Rock Hall, Maryland, should be your first mark that you’ll be welcomed. It shows off the town’s motto, “Nice People Live Here.” And they aren’t just empty words. Take a walk around the town and you’ll see so many kind waves that strangers must think they’ve been mistaken for someone else.
