By the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth's population will live in cities. With the increase of human population, an estimated 109 hectares of new land will be needed to grow enough food to feed them. If traditional farming keeps on continuing as they are practiced today, there won't be enough land. Even if there were, traditional farming can also be harmful to land. Overused soil loses nutrients(营养). Farmers use chemicals to treat their crops. These chemicals get into the ground and run off into bodies of water. The polluted water supply does harm to the ecosystem(生态环境) and the health of those living things nearby.
Vertical(垂直的) farming systems can really help solve these problems. First, farms in urban areas will allow people to harvest fresh produce yearround. There is no need to worry about harm such as droughts or insects, which could destroy a crop. And indoor farms do less harm to the environment. They use less water than a traditional farm and 97 percent of fresh water is reused.Second, vertical farms use less energy because they don't depend on large farming equipment and long transportation systems to carry the food from farms to cities. And all of the crops in an indoor farm are grown without pesticides(农药), so they are fresh and healthy.
So, the next time you hear the word farm, don't just think of that large, open land with crops and animals. Think inside the city—it's the future of farming.

Cinyee Chiu, an artist from Taiwan, is always happy to try something new. Her amazing works won lots of prizes. Among them, “24 Solar Terms(节气)” is the most popular.
Ancient Chinese divided a year into 24 parts according to the changes of the weather. It's the 24 solar terms. But not everyone knows them well. Cinyee Chiu put the 24 solar terms in pictures to help people understand them better.
Cinyee turned each solar term into an animal. But these animals are not just animals. You can also find seasonal fruits, vegetables or beautiful flowers on them.
When spring comes, water gets warm and fish start to swim around. So Cinyee chose fish as a symbol of Start of Spring. Also, she drew spring vegetables, Chinese chives on the back of the fish.
White Dew falls on about Sept.8. It shows the beginning of the cool autumn. There are colorful leaves and cooler nights at this time of year. As the temperature falls, white dew(露珠) is often seen on the grass and trees at night. For White Dew, Cinyee chose a raccoon—a small animal with thick hair. She drew white spots(小圆点) on the raccoon to show dew. And she used the dragon fruit to show the rich colors in autumn.
The young artist really gave the ancient Chinese culture a new look.
