Studies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.

Frank and Amelia’s family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment-Screen Time Tracker”. The VascellarosFrank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Samall said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.

“Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent closer to four hours on his phone, which came as a shock to him. The children’s times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.

Minneapolis-based Dr. Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members’ phone use has become problematic.

“If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?’ it may be sign that it is negatively (消极地) influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.

Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.

She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.

1.How did the Vascellaros feel about the test results?

A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful.

C.Uninterested. D.Surprised.

2.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5?

A.To encourage people to live simple life.

B.To ask people if they use phones too much.

C.To explain the signs of problematic phone use.

D.To show the importance of close relationships.

3.How did Lind Seal probably look at the app?

A.She worried about it.

B.She was in favor of it.

C.She felt it was a waste of time.

D.She thought it needed improvements.

4.What is the text mainly about?

B.The influence of apps on teens.

C.Children’s safety on the Internet.

D.Problems among family members.

One of the problems with passwords (密码) is that users forget them. In an effort to remember them, people use simple things like their dog’s names and their birth dates — anything that will give them a clue to remember what their passwords are. But for a hacker(黑客), this is the same as locking your door and leaving the key under the doormat(门口地垫).

To create a safe password that is easy to remember, follow these simple steps:

You should never use personal information as part of your password. It is very easy for someone to guess things like your last name and your pet’s name.

With the help of today’s computing power, it doesn’t take long to try every word in the dictionary and find your password, so you’d better not use real words for your password.

You can make a password much safer by mixing different types of characters. Use some capital letters along with small letters, numbers and even special characters such as & and %.

In order not to create a password using different character types that is hard to remember or using a word from the dictionary, you can use a “passphrase(代码)”. Think of a sentence from a song or a poem that you like and create a password using the first letters from each word. For example, instead of just setting a password like “yr$1Hes”, you can take a sentence such as “I like to read the about.com Internet network security website” and make it a password like “il2rta!nsw” by using the number “2” for the word “to” and using “!” in place of “Internet”. You can use may characters types and create a safe password that is hard to guess, but much easier for you to remember.

1.The underlined word “clue” in the passage is similar to “_____” in meaning.

A.an explanation B.a condition

C.a conclusion D.a piece of information

2.According to the passage, a passphrase is made up of _________.

A.different capital letters B.long English words from the dictionary

C.sentences from a song or a poem D.the first letters from each word of a sentence

3.Which of the following passwords might be the best according to the passage?

A.jessica208. B.19890703.

C.il2rta!nsw. D.3About&5.

4.What is the best title for this passage?

A.How to use you passwords correctly.

B.How to keep others away from your computers.

C.How to protect your private information online.

D.How to make you passwords safer and easier to remember.

When my father was getting ready for work, our house was ruled by knocks and words.

He used to come downstairs to breakfast.

The morning paper lay beside his plate. He always read the ''Deaths'' first, and then he knocked once on the table. One of my sisters brought his bread, already buttered for him. Usually he said nothing, but once I heard him say, ''I love you very much, Edith. I would love more if you buttered my bread on both sides. '' He read the paper all through breakfast.

Two knocks on the table meant ''I am ready for my tea. '' If a single knock followed that meant, ''More bread, please. ''

After breakfast he said, ''Boots. '' The paper was spread (展开) for him over the back of an arm-chair. Yesterday's paper was put on the chair for his feet, and his boots were brought to him, freshly cleaned. He read standing at the same time putting on his boots. With one boot finished he said, ''Bus. '' At that point one of the girls went outside to the garden gate and waited there. Her job was to stop a bus when it came. It came early sometimes and it had to wait for my father. ''Overcoat, hat. '' One of my sisters had already brushed his overcoat. Now she held it open for him. Another girl came with his hat, nicely brushed. ''Handkerchief, pipe (烟斗). '' They were brought and put, with his tobacco (烟草), into his pocket. He looked out of the window and said either ''Walking stick'' or ''Umbrella''. It was handed to him. Ready now, he was still reading the paper. He didn't put it down until he heard the shout ''Bus coming! '' Then he kissed my mother and went out. The girls breathed freely.

How lucky a man was to have a wife and five daughters at home!
