I received an urgent call from my aunt. " Turn on the TV. Granny's on the Channel 10 news. " It turned out that Granny had made a sandwich run for her office and was stopped at a red light downtown. She had the window rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man rushed up to the driver's side window, intending to carjack(劫车)her.

Now, what the would-be carjacker couldn't have known was that this woman simply wasn't " a granny" . This was Nancy Johnson — the same woman who owned and lived on a Texas cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug her own post holes to lay fence. The week before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped off its head with a shovel . She was the proud owner of the new minivan(小型货车)she was driving. In other words, she was not your normal kind of granny.

The carjacker leaned into the open window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and said, " Get out of this car. I have a gun, and I will shoot you.” A statement like that would have terrified anyone else. Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge." If you really had a gun in your pocket, you would've pulled it out and led with that first," she shouted at him, apparently unworried.

She was right. The criminal didn't have a gun. He instead reached into the window, grabbed her, and tried to pull her out of the van. He pulled open the door, wildly catching Granny's arms. Granny leaned her shoulder inside to press the horn(喇叭) and started yelling to make people around notice what was happening. With the door now open, she held tight the steering wheel with one arm and started kicking the man anywhere her foot could make contact. This tall woman had quite a reach.

Including children in the farming lifestyle has many benefits. Sure, it is nice to have the additional help with chores(家庭杂务),but it also fosters so much growth, sending our kids down a good path towards who they will someday become. It is possible that our children will grow up to lead lives that do not include farming. 1.

Through caring for farm animals, kids learn that in life others often come before self.

2. It doesn't matter if we don't feel like it or if we are sick and tired. What matters is that we take care of the animals that take care of us and do so in a timely manner.

3. If the work on a farm does not get done, the operation fails. It takes discipline and commitment to get down to business every day, and seeing this in action will give kids a good work attitude. They will know and understand that nothing good comes easy and that they have to work to survive. 4. Functioning as part of a productive team will surely be playing a crucial role sooner or later in all walks of life.

Additionally, fanning teaches patience. 5. Cattle will be difficult to control. Horses will run away when you try to catch them. Goats will kick over that bucket of hard-earned milk. A rooster will decide you got too close to his hens and give you a run for your money. In spite of all that, kids will learn to be patient and take things easy.

There may not be any instant reward, but in the long-term kids will see the benefit of all their efforts during those hard days.

A.At the same time, they learn to work with others.

B.Farm life also teaches kids the value of hard work.

C.Children learn to be grateful for animals for eating purpose.

D.Teamwork is no longer an important skill to develop and use.

E.There are going to be a lot of days when things do not go your way.

F.However, what they learn on a farm can also be instrumental in their future lives.

G.Animals need to be fed, watered, and cared for before we get to sit down and relax.

Those driving forward the movement of paying college athletes are forgetting the reason one goes to college: to get an education.

In an era struggling for competitive balance, how would the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) keep from giving schools like Kentucky and Alabama even more of a competitive advantage than schools like Valparaiso and Florida Gulf Coast? The issue gets complicated when taking into consideration how the salary difference between different teams gets decided.

Even worse, imagine athletes just coming to college for the money. We call college athletes amateurs. Oxford's definition of amateur is "a person who engages in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an unpaid basis." The keyword is unpaid. The history of the word "amateur" dates back to the French word "amator”, which means lover. Essentially, college athletes should be playing their sport for the love of the game, not the money that would be given to them.

Rules should not be made for the minority, and in this instance only two percent of athletes play professional sports. The expected career span of that two percent is 10 years, three and a half years in the National Football League (NFL). An astonishing 80 percent of retired NFL players go broke within three years of retirement, 60 percent in the NBA within five years. This is why the NCAA and its member institutions should apply a "stay and learn”, rule.

This rule should state that if athletes choose to come to college, they will get paid in scholarships that last the entire educational process and the athlete must stay in school until they earn a degree in the area of study they choose. That money from going professional is going to run out sometime, but the degree will always be there.

Look at college athletics for what it is and should always be, a high-pressure learning environment and an avenue to earn an education. A much more fun extension of the classroom if you will. After all, they are called student-athletes.

1.How can the salary difference influence college teams?

A.It is likely to promote cooperation.

B.It can increase their independence.

C.It can lead to more communication.

D.It will probably cause more imbalance.

2.Why does the author give explanations to the word "amateur”?

A.To give an individual comment.

B.To confirm the origin of the word.

C.To make the point more authoritative.

D.To provide an example for the argument.

3.How will college athletes benefit from the "stay and learn rule?

A.Increase their earnings.

B.Get trained for scholarships.

C.Ensure themselves to get a degree.

D.Continue their professional careers.

4.What does the author mainly argue about in the text?

A.For money or for career?

B.A college education or not?

C.Going professional or being amateur?

D.To pay or not to pay college athletes?

Blue whales, the earth’s largest animals, call to others of their kind, though exactly what these cries communicate remains a mystery. But these sounds have begun evolving (演变). Since at least the 1960s, the pitch (音调) of Antarctic blue whales has downshifted. Scientists have theories as to why: all involving humans.

The deepening of their sounds is not unique. Many blue whales around the world have also dropped their pitch. In a study last year that analyzed more than 1 million individual recordings of whale calls, scale shifts were found across species, and among populations that don’t necessarily interact with one another. This is to say, whatever has caused the change doesn’t seem to have a specific geographic origin.

The underwater noises caused by ocean traffic and at-sea industries might seem a likely criminal. However, scientists have identified lowered pitches even across populations of whales that live in seas without major shipping routes.

One possible explanation for the change is the achievements of global conservation efforts. As their populations have grown, then, the whales may have decreased their volume because they are more likely to be communicating over short distances.

Last year’s study of whale calls also suggests a threatening reason for the drop in pitch, however. Perhaps whales don't need to be so loud because sound waves travel farther in oceans made acidic by the absorption of carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, meanwhile, may also indirectly influence whale voices in other ways. Recent study shows that, during the summer, the whales must use their top volume to be heard in the cracking ice — a natural sound increased by unnatural processes, as rising temperatures worsen ice-melt. So the impacts of a warming planet may modulate animal sounds even in remote places.

1.To what extent is whales’ pitch drop?

A.Across the species.

B.In the Antarctic Ocean.

C.Among some populations.

D.Within one million individuals.

2.What causes the evolving of whales’ pitch according to the text?

A.Less communication and more threat.

B.Protection efforts and acidic sea water.

C.Sharp decrease of whales’ populations.

D.Underwater noises by ships and industries.

3.What does the underlined word “modulate” mean in the last paragraph?

A.Produce. B.Damage. C.Balance. D.Change.

4.What can we infer from the text?

A.Man is the soul of nature.

B.Man and nature are in one.

C.Nature pardons no mistakes .

D.Nature has the final say over man.

I work at a grocery store in Montreal's Plateau neighbourhood, which gets a lot of regulars. On March 12, the Quebec government announced to close all public places to stop the spread of the pandemic(流行病)of coronavirus.

The next day the store was the busiest I've ever seen. The six cash registers had to be kept open from 10 a. m. until close. It was nuts. I didn't have time to eat lunch, and whenever one of us on cash had to use the bathroom, wed have to bring in a coworker off the floor to cover for us.

Since then, the atmosphere in the store has been different. Customers are mostly considerate, but whenever someone coughs or sneezes, everyone turns around to make sure that person sneezed into their elbow. I've even seen customers come in wearing some strange get-ups. One guy even came in with a plastic Walmart bag wrapped around his entire head, with a slit cut out for his eyes.

A lot of my coworkers have left to avoid a public-facing job during the pandemic. Grocery store workers across Canada are putting their health at risk every time they come in to work, but a lot of us are still making close to minimum wage. I realized that I feel more exhausted than normal even though I'm working the same hours.

There still have been some moments of kindness in the midst of the chaos. I've overheard people talking on the phone who sounded as though they were organizing grocery deliveries for those stuck at home. And this past weekend a very nice lady thanked us for continuing to work. I know everyone is worried, but it's uneless having the same scary conversations day after day. Instead, tell us a funny anecdote, or about Homething nice. We'll appreciate the distraction, and you'll make our day just a bit brighter.

1.What does the author intend to show by " It was nuts." in paragraph 2?

A.The goods were in short supply.

B.The store was having a big sale.

C.The cashiers complained about their work.

D.The locals rushed to do shopping like crazy.

2.What does paragraph 3 convey about customers?

A.They like to shop here in disguise.

B.They are panicky about the disease .

C.They are more friendly to each other.

D.They have taken proper preventive measures.

3.Which of the following best describes the author?

A.Optimistic. B.Talented. C.Ambitious. D.Efficient.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.It is not work but worry that kills

B.Helping others is helping ourselves

C.Moments of kindness shine in a time of chaos

D.Here is what it's like working in the pandemic

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.

She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (指责) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?

“oh, yes…,but I don't have money on me...” she replied.

“That’s nothing. I'll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness! ” said Jenny as she dried her tears “ Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so cruel compared to a stranger! ! ”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology (道歉) to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Many healthcare workers know that washing hands is important to prevent the spread of infectious disease. 1. During a study conducted by Nicas and Best at Berkley University, they counted the number of times people touched their face with their hands. 2.Whether we are aware of our actions or not, most of us can agree that we touch our face with our hands frequently enough.

Imagine that you are able to record a full day of your actions. Better yet, reflect on what you did when you woke up yesterday morning. Let me give you an idea of my previous morning. I was woken by the alarm clock at 6 am. 3.Then I checked my phone for messages, turned on the TV for my morning news, started making my coffee and finally hit the shower. It wasn’t even 5 minutes from the time I awoke and I already touched different objects. The point of this is to be aware that even in our homes we are exposed to germs in places we don’t realize.

Luckily, the human body has amazing defense against harmful germs. 4.Our white blood cells are like soldiers coming to the rescue. Unfortunately, there are a lot of areas on our face that do not have the protection of skin such as the eyes and mouth. There’s a reason to every wise proverb and our parents annoying us to wash our hands before dinner is not for nothing.

5.If you have children, it is even more important to set the example because children are known to learn from adults. Let’s start a good habit of washing hands. As for your friends, don’t be shy about checking to make sure their hands are clean. Asking someone if they have washed their hands is caring. Checking to see if someone has washed their hands will benefit not only that person, but you and your family.

B.Several minutes later, I turned off the alarm clock.

C.It is easy for us to admit that we wash our hands regularly.

D.They are more self-aware that hand washing should be practiced as needed.

E.Most importantly, it is our duty to set the right example for friends and family.

F.They found that the subjects touched their face 15.7 times per hour on average.

G.Do the rest of your family members, especially children, wash their hands regularly?

Perhaps the first novel to best express the modern idea of the self was Jane Eyre, written in 1847 by Charlotte Bronte.

Those who remember Jane Eyre solely as required reading in high-school English class likely recall most vividly a childhood banishment(流放) to a death-haunted room, a mysterious presence in the attic, and a cold mansion going up in flames. It’s more seemingly the stuff of Lifetime television, not revolutions. But as unbelievable as many of the events of the novel are, even today, Bronte’s biggest accomplishment wasn’t in plot devices. It was the narrative voice of Jane — who so openly expressed her desire for identity, definition and meaning — that rang powerfully true to its 19th-century audience. In fact, many early readers mistakenly believed Jane Eyre was a true account (in a clever marketing scheme, the novel was subtitled, “An Autobiography”)perhaps a validation of her character’s authenticity.

The way that novels paid attention to the particularities of human experience (rather than the universals of romances) made them the ideal vehicle to shape how readers understood the modern individual. The novel seemed perfectly designed to tell Bronte’s first-person narrative of a poor orphan girl searching for a secure identity—first among an unloving family, then a charity school, and finally with the wealthy but unattainable employer she loves. Unable to find her sense of self through others, Jane makes the surprising decision to turn inward.

The broader cultural implications of the story—its insistence on the value of conscience and will—were such that one critic worried some years after its publication that the “most alarming revolution of modern times has followed the invasion of Jane Eyre' Before Rene Descartes's cogito ergo sum (“I think, therefore I am”)when the sources of authority were external and objective, the aspects of the self so central to today’s understanding mattered little then.

To be sure, no earlier novelist had provided a voice so seemingly pure, so fully belonging to the character, as Bronte, She developed her art alongside her sisters, the novelists Anne and Emily, but it was Charlotte whose work best captured the sense of the modern individual. Anne Bronte's novels Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall contributed to the novers ability to offer social criticism, while the Romantic sensibilities of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights explored how the “other,” in the form of the dark, unpredictable Heathcliffcan threaten the integrity(完整) of the self.

One of the greatest testimonies(证明) to Bronte's accomplishment came from a modernist pioneer, Virginia Woolf, who declares, “Jane’s voice is the source of the power the book has to absorb the reader completely into her world.” Woolf explains how Bronte depicts: ...an overpowering personality, so that, as we say in real life, they have only to open the door to make themselves felt. There is in them some untamed ferocity perpetually at war with the accepted order of things which makes them desire to create instantly rather than to observe patiently.

It is exactly this willingness — desire, even — to be “at war with the accepted order of things” that characterizes the modern self. While we now take such a sense for granted, it wasas Bronte’s contemporaries rightly understood, radical (激进的) in her day.

“_______,’’ Jane says as she is dragged by her cruel aunt toward banishment in the bedroom where her late uncle died. This sentence, Joyce Carol Oates argues, serves as the theme of Jane’s whole story.

Charlotte Bronte created a new mold for the self—a person’s inner life can allow her to change from the inside out.

It is true Jane does right and exercises great moral strength.

Humanity has begun wrestling with the dangers of global threats such as climate change. But few authorities are planning for catastrophic solar storms -huge eruptions of mass and energy from the sun that destroy Earth’s magnetic field. In a recent paper, two Harvard University scientists estimate the potential economic damage from such an event will increase in the future and could equal the current U.S.GDP-about20 trillion-150years from now.

This kind of storm has happened before. The so-called Carrington Event in 1859,the most intense magnetic storm ever recorded on Earth, caused auroras(极光)in the atmosphere and even delivered electric shocks to telegraph operators. But a Carrington-scale storm today would cause far more harm because society now depends so heavily on electrical power grids, communications satellites and GPS.

In an effort to quantify that threat, astrophysicists Abraham Loeb and Manasvi Lingam of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics developed a mathematical model that assumes society's vulnerability(脆弱性)to solar storms will grow with technological advances.Under this model, during the next 50 years the potential for economic damage will depend primarily on the rising odds of a strong solar storm over time.Beyond 50 years our vulnerability will increase dramatically with technological progress until the latter levels off.

Some scientists question the model’s predictions. “Estimating the economic impact is challenging now, let alone in over a century,” says Edward Oughton, a research associate at the University of Cambridge's Center for Risk Studies.Yet he warns that uncertainty should not stop us from practical preparations, such as making power grids stronger and improving early-warning systems.

Loeb and Lingam think up a much wider strategy:$100-billion magnetic deflector shield(导流板), positioned between Earth and the sun. This idea seems “pretty preposterous, ”however, given that solar particles arrive at Earth from all directions, says Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder.

A better understanding of"space weather"-the changing condition in Earth's outer space environment, including solar radiation and particles-could help find the best strategies for confronting a dangerous solar storm, says Stacey Worman,a senior analyst at consulting firm Abt Associates."This is a challenging but important question,"Worman says,"that we need more eyes on."

1.According to Edward Oughton, which of the following about solar storms is right?

A.They will become much stronger in 150 years.

B.Technology makes their potential damage grow.

C.Space weather forecast can effectively help deal with them.

D.It's difficult to predict their possible economic damage.

2.The underlined word “preposterous” in Paragraph 5 means

A.innovative B.practical

C.unreasonable D.inflexible

3.The author writes the passage mainly to_

A.remind people to guard against solar storms

B.report the damage of solar storms

C.introduce the characteristics of solar storms

D.analyze the possible cause of solar storms

One day, gardeners might not just hear the buzz of bees among their flowers, but the whirr of robots, too. Scientists have managed to turn an unassuming drone (无人机) into a remote controlled pollinator (授粉媒介) by attaching horsehairs coated with a special, sticky gel to its underbelly.

Animal pollinators are needed for the reproduction of 90% of flowering plants and one third of human food crops. Chief among those are bees — but many bee populations in the United States have been in steep decline in recent decades. Thus, the decline of bees isn’t just worrisome because it could disrupt ecosystems, but also because it could disrupt agriculture and economy. People have been trying to come up with replacement techniques, but none of them are especially effective yet.

Scientists have thought about using drones, but they haven’t figured out how to make free-flying robot insects that can rely on their own power source without being attached to a wire. “It’s very tough work,” said senior author Eijiro Miyako, a chemist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. His particular contribution to the field involves a gel, one he’d considered a mistake 10 years before and stuck in a storage cabinet. When it was rediscovered a decade later, it hadn’t dried up or degraded at all. “I was so surprised because it still had high viscosity,” Miyako said.

The chemist noticed that when dropped, the gel absorbed an impressive amount of dust from the floor. Miyako realized this material could be very useful for picking up pollen (花粉). He and his colleagues chose a drone and attached horsehairs to its smooth surface to mimic a bee’s fuzzy body. They coated those horsehairs in the gel, and then controlled the drones over lilies, where they would pick up the pollen from one flower and then deposit the pollen at another one, thus fertilizing it.

The scientists looked at the hairs under a scanning electron microscope and counted up the pollen grains attached to the surface and found that the drones whose horsehairs had been coated with the gel had about 10 times more pollen than those that had not been coated with the gel.

Miyako does not think such drones would replace bees altogether, but could simply help bees with their pollinating duties. There’s a lot of work to be done before that’s a reality, however. Small drones will need to become more controllable and energy efficient, as well as smarter, with better GPS and artificial intelligence.

1.What does the underlined word “viscosity” in Para.3 probably mean?

A.Hardness. B.Stickiness.

C.Flexibility. D.Purity.

2.We can learn from the passage that______.

A.bees disrupt both agriculture and economy

B.scientists have invented self-powered robot insects

C.bees in the United States are on the edge of extinction

D.Miyako found the special feature of the gel by chance

3.According to Eijiro Miyako, the drones______.

A.are not yet ready for practical use

B.may eventually replace bees in the future

C.are much more efficient than bee pollinators

D.can provide a solution to economic depression

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers by but simply just glare(瞪眼看)at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.

As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. " What do you want?" the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.

"Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs?" the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye."

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Paragraph 1: The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine.

Marian Bechtel sits at West Palm Beach’s Bar Louie counter by herself, quietly reading her e-book as she waits for her salad. What is she reading? None of your business! Lunch is Bechtel’s “me” time. And like more Americans, she’s not alone.

A new report found 46 percent of meals are eaten alone in America. More than half53 percenthave breakfast alone and nearly half46 percenthave lunch by themselves. Only at dinnertime are we eating together anymore, 74 percent, according to statistics from the report.

“I prefer to go out and be out. Alone, but together, you know? “Bechtel said, looking up from her book. Bechtel, who works in downtown West Palm Beach, has lunch with coworkers sometimes, but like many of us, too often works through lunch at her desk. A lunchtime escape allows her to keep a boss from tapping her on the shoulder. She returns to work feeling energized. “I prefer to go out and be out . Today I just wanted some time to myself.” she said.

Andrew Mazoleny, a local videographer, is finishing his lunch at the bar. He likes that he can sit and check his phone in peace or chat up the barkeeper. “It’s a chance for self-reflection(自我反思). You return to work energetic and with a plan.” said he.

That freedom to choose is one reason more people like to eat alone. There was a time when people may have felt uncomfortable about asking for a table for one, but those days are over. Now, we have our smartphones to keep us company at the table. “It doesn’t feel as alone as it may have before all the advances in technology,” said Laurie Demerit, whose company provided the statistics(数据)for the report.

1.What are the statistics in Paragraph 2 about?

A.Food variety. B.Eating habits.

C.Table manners. D.Restaurant service.

2.Why does Bechtel prefer to go out for lunch?

A.To meet with her coworkers.

B.To catch up with her work.

C.To have some time on her own.

D.To collect data for her report.

3.What is the text mainly about?

A.The advantage of wireless technology.

B.The importance of self-reflection.

C.The stress from working overtime.

D.The popularity of having meals alone.

Twelve years ago, I arrived in Central Florida from Puerto Rico. I had heard of a job opportunity and decided to pursue it. But it never became a reality. I quickly learned that being alone without resources in an unfamiliar city was not a comfortable situation to be in.

Once my limited funds ran out I became homeless and spent a year and a half living on the streets of Orlando. Apart from feeling not being noticed and missing my family, I had to face another challenge — hunger.

For the first time in my life, I, as a foreign man, who had lived my life in the relative comfort of the middle class, understood the desperation someone feels when they don’t get enough to eat. I clearly remembered having run a distance of more than 7 miles on many occasions just to make it to a local feeding program before they closed at 7 pm.

Once the need for food was met, the next challenge would arise — where to find a place to sleep for the night. Fortunately, local programs like the Coalition for the Homeless, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Wayne Densch Center were an important part of my ability to survive my painful experience.

With the assistance of these programs, I was accepted by a college scholarship program through the Coalition and obtained two degrees from Valencia.

My experience has helped me understand that devoting my life to helping others offers lasting rewards. Today, I am employed as Childhood Hunger Programs Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank and oversee the summer feeding, Hi-Five Kids Pack, and Kids Café programs. I am so proud to be able to distribute food resources to those wonderful programs and help hundreds more like me.

2.Before being accepted by a college scholarship program, the author_____.

A.had been struggling financially

B.had won his degree in a university

C.had lived with his relatives happily

D.had lost hope of facing the future

3.From his experience, the author learns that ______.

A.a friend in need is a friend indeed

B.one good turn deserves another

C.misfortune may be an actual blessing

D.where there is a will there is a way

It was February and Danny Filippidis and his friends were skiing around. After a few days of fun and relaxation, their annual trip was coming to a close. Danny wanted to capture(捕捉) a few more memories of it to post online when they got home. The problem was, he’d left his cell phone in the car.

By the time Danny realized this, he and his friends were already halfway up Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid. Not wanting to miss a moment, he told his friends to wait while he skied back down to fetch the phone. Danny was an adult and an experienced skier, so they had no reason to doubt his return.

However, it wasn’t until it began to get dark that his friends finally realized something may have gone wrong. They called the police, who began a ground search in no time. Before long, his family and friends came down to help as well. But Danny was nowhere to be found.

What the rescue teams didn’t know at the time was that, by the time the alarm went out, Danny wasn’t even in Lake Placid anymore. He’d taken a wrong turn on his way back to the car, falling down and becoming knocked out. It was dusk by the time he woke up, not knowing where he was.

Danny struggled his way to the road. He flagged down a truck in the hope of securing a ride off the mountain. The truck stopped and he climbed into the warm cab. After telling the trucker where he was going, he fell into a heavy sleep. When the trucker finally informed him that they had arrived, it had been midnight, when his family and friends were still searching the cold wilderness for any sign of him.

Danny often reflects on what might have happened if he hadn’t been found by that trucker. To this day, Danny Filippidis doesn’t know the trucker’s name. He doubts whether he could even point him out if he saw him on the street and the police have been unable to track the man down as well.

1.Why did Danny ski back to fetch his phone?

A.To surf the Net. B.To avoid it being stolen.

C.To make a call. D.To shoot some photos.

2.What happened to Danny on his way down the mountain?

A.He got stuck in a rock. B.He fell down the mountain.

C.He met with a snowstorm. D.He crashed into a truck.

3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Danny was grateful to the trucker. B.Danny was extremely forgetful.

C.The authorities took no action at all. D.The trucker was hard to recognize.
