Summary Writing

An Extension of the Human Brain

Other people can help us compensate for our mental and emotional deficiencies (欠缺)much as a wooden leg can compensate for a physical deficiency . To be exact , other people can extend our intelligence and help us understand and adjust our emotions. When another person helps us in such ways , he or she is participating in what I’ve called a “ social prosthetic (义肢的) system.” Such systems do not need to operate face-to face , and it’s clear to me that the Internet is expanding the range of my own social prosthetic system . It’s already a big bank of many minds . Even in its current state , the Internet has extended my memory and judgment .

Regarding memory : Once I look up something on the Internet , I don’t need to keep all the details for future use ------I know where to find that information again and can quickly and easily do particularly striking when I’m writing ; I ‘m no longer comfortable writing if I ‘m not connected to the Internet. It’s become natural to check facts as I write, taking a minute or two to dip into PubMed, Wikipedia , or other websites.

Regarding judgment: The Internet has made me smarter in matters small and large . For example , when I ‘m writing a textbook , it has become second nature to check a dozen definitions of a key term , which helps me dig into the core and understand its meaning . But more than that , I now regularly compare my views with those of many others . If I have a “ new idea”, I now quickly look to see whether somebody else has already thought of it , or something similar-and I then compare what I think with what others have thought . This certainly makes my own views clearer . Moreover , I can find out whether my reactions to an event are reasonable enough by reading about those of others on the Internet .

Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

The way individuals collectively remember , forget , and recall event , people , places , etc,has been an important topic of research on collective memory .1.He developed the concept of collective memory , arguing that individual memories are only understood within the context of a group through time and space .

2.They include theoretical concepts , the study of historical sources , oral histories , case studies , interviews, and surveys . For example , one group of researchers carried out several interviews to investigate younger and older American adults for three wars , namely , the Civil War , World War II.,  and the Iraq War . Although Americans of different ages recalled similar events , the interpretation of some events changed over the generations : both younger and older adults recalled the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki , however , they differed in how they rated the bombings .

More recently , memory study scholars tend to stress the significance of the media in shaping collective memories : “ Culture and individuals memory are constantly produced through the technologies of memory .” Under this perspective, research often involves content analysis of news and the use of surveys or interviews for analyzing the public memory . Alternatively , scholars have studied the role of journalists as collective memory agents by manually analyzing the stories journalists tell as professionals and the stories they

tell about their profession. 3.

However, developments in digital technologies in recent years have significantly influenced how we keep track of events both as individuals and as a collective . “The Internet doesn’t forget .” The Internet has had strong impacts on memory and the processes of remembering and forgetting. 4.. Analyzing different Web documents, researchers have shown that more recent past events are remembered more vividly in the present.

A.There are a few relatively simple things a person can do to help improve their memory

B.Meanwhile , it has converted collective memory into an observable phenomenon that can be tracked and measured online

C.Recently developed information technologies particularly the Internet , have affected how we create , stored and recall information

D.Maurice Halbwachs is generally recognized as the father of collective memory research

E.In all cases , most of the research methods applied to memory studies rely on long procedures

F.Research on collective memory is often based on various aspects

The next time a giant Big Mac or Coke flashes into your mind when you’re walking home from the pub, you may not simply have the snacks. And that picture of the model putting on Chanel — no, you’re not daydreaming.

A British startup has created a new advertising system that uses lasers to project images up to 200 metres tall from the sides of tall buildings, enabling advertisers to reach people from virtual billboards(广告牌)in the sky. Passers-by will see each image for only between one tenth and quarter of a second, as their eye eye catches the light from certain angles.

Advertising agencies and big businesses have already signalled their interest, but Skyline campaigners have branded the technology “greedy” and said that it could fill our skies with showy and tasteless brands.

The Echo system, from Lightvert, uses a high laser projector to bounce light off a narrow reflective strip fixed to the side of a building, visible up to 1km away. This creates large-scale images that are captured briefly in the viewer’s eye as a result of the “persistence of vision” effect: the same effect that leaves an imprint of a light source on your vision after you’ve turned away.

Daniel Siden, the technology’s inventor, explained: People often think this could be subversive, but it’s not subliminal advertising(隐性广告)as the imagery registers on the conscious level. It’s actually less invasive and more fun than traditional advertising. Mr.Siden said that planning experts have indicated that planning permission should not be a problem outside of conservation area. He said that the system was safe because of the distance between the projector and passers by. And images would be above the line of sight of drivers and cyclists

and below the field of vision of airline pilot. The images have been tested and shown not to cause epileptic seizures(癫痫发作).

Because it uses only one strip of reflected light, the system needs a small amount of the power, about one-twentieth of a standard 96-sheet digital outdoor display for an image of the same height.

The owners of high-rise properties could use the system to make large returns from installing the laser projector and reflective strip. The company puts the cost of a unit measuring 100 metres at under 750,000, based on the present design, anticipating that costs will drop.

Still, some Skyline campaigners dislike the technology and believe it delivers subliminal advertising. Barbara Weiss of the Skyline Campaign, said: “It’s actually offensive. London’s latest tall buildings are not particularly well-built or well designed, but unfortunately people are forced to look at them. Adding stupid advertising that’s invasive in its nature will only make it worse.”

1.Why does the writer cite the example of Big Mac, Coke and Chanel in paragraph 1?

A.Because he attempts to promote these products to potential consumers.

B.Because he studies the association between products and images in advertising.

C.Because he tries to illustrate the effectiveness of flashing images of advertised goods.

D.Because he wants to introduce a new advertising technology to readers.

2.Which of the following statements about the Echo system is true according to the passage?

A.Pedestrians can see the flashing images on one side of the building from specific angles.

B.The system is composed of a laser projector, a reflective strip and a physical billboard.

C.The image lasts between one tenth and quarter of a second in vision even if you turn away.

D.It’s a new advertising system developed by a time-honored British company.

3.The underlined word “subversive” in paragraph 5 probably means ________.

A.Subconscious B.trouble making

C.harmless D.imaginative

4.Which party is likely to set obstacles to the application of the Echo System?

A.Environmentalists worried about energy consumption.

B.Drivers, cyclists and pilots whose sight might be affected.

C.The Skyline Campaign regarding the image as flashy.

D.The patients who suffer from epileptic seizures.

Bringing tech into the bedroom can be more harmful than helpful. Glancing at your phone before hitting the bed may be distracting and, more important, the blue light its screen emits is known to make falling asleep more difficult. But that’s not true for all gadgets. These smart-home devices want to invade your bedroom with the aim of improving your sleep.

Muse Headband, $249

Falling asleep can be more difficult than staying asleep. With its headband, Muse hopes to train the brain to handle stress more efficiently, making it easier to relax. The gadget uses sensors to measure brain activity and then feeds that data to an app that guides you through meditation exercises. A number of less expensive or free meditation apps attempt to do much of the same without the headband.

Here One Smart Earbuds, $299.99

Sometimes earplugs or the sound of the

TV isn’t enough to drown out a partner’s snoring. Earbuds like these can help by

allowing you to progressively drown out the volume of the world around you. And if you typically need white noise to fall asleep, you can turn on a filter for that type of sound through the accompanying app.

Apple Iphone, $399-$769

Staring at the blue light coming from

your phone before bed can lower your body’s efficiency to produce melatonin, the

hormone that affects circadian rhythms.

Apple’s Night Shift feature lessens this effect by making the display colors look warmer to reduce blue light. It can also remind you to get to bed at the same time to even out your sleep habits.

S+sleep Monitor, $129.99

Many devices that track sleep require

special sensors worn on the body or embedded in a mattress. ResMed’s S+claims to monitor without making physical ontact. Instead, it uses motion-detection tehnology to pick up your tosses and turns throughout the night. It can also assess whether the temperature and lighting conditions in your room are

D.Blue light reminds you to get to bed and regulates your sleep.

3.What’s the best title for the passage?

A.Sleep, something well deserved

B.Sleep, your name is gadget

C.Sleep, a mission made impossible

D.Sleep, highly dependent on tech

Sleeper trains occupy a romantic corner of any traveler’s soul. One of Hercule Poirot’s most fascinating adventures takes place on the Simplon Orient Express, which used to run from Paris to Istanbul. A famous scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” features a night train entering a tunnel. James Bond, meanwhile, detects a spy on a sleeper train after noticing him behave suspiciously in the dining car.

In some parts of the world, the nostalgia(怀旧)lives on. The Caledonian Sleeper, complete with smartly dressed waiters, neeps and tatties(白萝卜泥和土豆泥)and a selection of whiskies, is the best way to travel between London and Scotland. Elsewhere, however, sleepers are on their last legs  . Flights across Europe have become so cheap that fewer and fewer travelers bother with sleeper trains. Sensing that the end is approaching. Andrew Martin, a British writer, has written a book about the sleeper.

“Night Trains” is a brief history of the mode, combined with accounts of journeys Mr.Martin has taken on sleeper routes across Europe. The reader joins him on a train Munich, where he eats a tuna sandwich on board. Travelling from Paris to Venice, he thinks he has been robbed of $105. The service to Nice is cancelled, yet such is his love for sleeping aboard that he spends the night on the train as it sits on the platform.

These stories make clear that the golden age of the sleeper train is long past. How different things were in the 19th century, when a passenger on the Orient Express could dine on delicacies and good wines. The only modern-day sleeper train which comes up to the Mr. Martin’s exacting standards is the Nordland, which travels towards northern Norway.

Those who have no experience of the sleeper trains often ask sleeper enthusiasts: ”Do you sleep?” After a read of Mr. Martin’s book, the answer would seem to be a definite “no”: the noise of the train wake him up time and again. Still, it is hard not to be won over by his enthusiasm. Catch the sleeper train, before it’s too late.

1.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in paragraph two?

A.Sleeper trains are the last means of transportation for travelers.

B.Travelers tend to fall asleep toward the end of their trip.

C.Travelers are too exhausted to walk any longer.

D.Sleeper trains are becoming out of fashion.

2.After reading the book Night Trains, readers ________.

A.may enjoy the scenery on their journey from London to Scotland.

B.can have the opportunity to travel on the best train in Europe.

C.may have a basic understanding of the history of sleeper trains.

D.cannot find a similar train living up to the standards of Mr. Martin.

3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The noise of the train makes it impossible for travelers to sleep well.

B.Readers may be discouraged from riding on sleeper trains.

C.The writer of the passages suggests not spending nights aboard.

D.For enthusiasts, the love for sleepers outweighs the inconvenience caused.

4.The author’s purpose of writing the passage is to ________.

A.introduce readers to a new book about sleeper trains

B.compare the advantages of sleeper trains in different periods

C.inform the readers of the rise and fall of sleeper trains

D.recall readers’ memory of an old-fashioned means of transportation

When you’re shopping at the grocery store, you probably expect that the olive oil you see came from, well, olives. And that the organic vegetables were never exposed to poisonous chemicals. Increasingly, however, there’s a chance you might be ______. In recent years, there has been a rise in reports of so-called food fraud, or attempts by various entities — including storage workers, suppliers and distributors — to alter products and mislead customers and food companies alike for ______ gain. Among the more recent examples: “natural” honey containing antibiotics and Italian companies selling “Italian olive oil” from a blend of oils that did not ______ from Italy.

By and large, the fraudsters are trying to make easy money — ______ for a whole food or pricey ingredient, then cutting it with ______ stuff secretly. But the health consequences can be ______.

How can this happen? In the U.S., the Pure Food and Drug Act has prevented the “manufacture, sale or transportation of misbranded or poisonous foods” since 1906, and similar laws exist in other countries.

But most global food regulators, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, aren’t ______ to enforce them effectively. For the most part, they focus on safety standards — ______ that foods don’t contain bacteria or viruses — and rely on companies to police their own ingredients, lest they face ______ backlash(强烈抵制). But now that food manufacturing has become globalized, supply chains are longer, creating more opportunities for bad actors to ______. Anyone who can ______ substituting cheap ingredients for more expensive ones is going to try.

Governments are starting to fight back. In 2014, the U.K. created a food-crime unit that collects reports of food fraud. But in order to prevent fraud in the first place, the food industry needs to ______ the safeguarding of its own production network. So the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) — a trade group including officials from more than 300 food manufactures — will this year start ______ its members’ supply chains, from field to table, to identify vulnerabilities.

______, dozens of other food-industry experts recently teamed up with academics from Michigan State University to launch the Food Fraud Initiative FFI, a group that studies fraudsters — specifically, how they avoid safeguards — and then advises food companies on how to get rid of them. “There are plenty of criminals out there who are going to wake up and perceive some opportunity for fraud,” says John Spink, director of the FFI. “We just need to make ourselves a(n) ______ target.”

Square dancing has been more and more popular with the elderly as their living condition improve. Most people think it can help people take regularly exercise and strengthen their fitness. Besides, it provides people more chances to take outdoor activities. However, some people argue that the music is very noisy, that disturbs the surrounding citizens' normal life. Also, be exposed to such loud noise may do a harm to their health in the long run.

In my opinion, square dancing is a good form of exercise, so dancers should take our neighbors' needs into consideration. If they chose a right time and turn down the music, it will cause fewer trouble for others.

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).

The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.

Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).

But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.

The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).

Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.

1.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.

B.The increasing variety of California big trees.

C.The distribution of big trees in California forests.

D.The influence of farming on big trees in California.

2.Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?

A.Ecological studies of forests.

B.Banning woodcutting.

C.Limiting housing development.

D.Fire control measures.

3.What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre?

A.Inadequate snowmelt. B.A longer dry season.

C.A warmer climate. D.Dampness of the air.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?

B.Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon

C.Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?

D.Patrick McIntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California

Anger is not wrong. I know this statement seems shocking and challenges the wildly popular “Positive Thinking” movement, which encourages us to “be full of positive energy” and “let go of our anger”. However, the truth is that anger is just an emotion, and emotions are neither right nor wrong. We do not consciously select them.We do, on the other hand, select how we express our emotions and there are definitely right and wrong means of expression.

The reason we’re often urged to “keep a lid on”our anger is that few people ever learn proper and positive ways to express anger. Instead, we are taught that “anger is wrong” and “you should keep your anger inside”. But these messages don't change the fact that, for most of us, anger exists.

Many popular “Positive Thinking” programmes assume that success comes from “controlling our emotion” and that this can be done by simply repeating positive statements.Interestingly, these positive slogans often include a lot of negativity. “Only losers complain! I am a winner!” is one popular saying. The belief that those who disagree with us are losers is actually quite negative and is often used as an excuse for rude language and personal attacks.

When it comes to dealing with negative situations in our daily lives, the ability to reasonably express anger or disagreement is an important skill. But we must use balanced and nonviolent methods to express our dissatisfaction. Frustration at unfair policies or treatment can certainly cause anger, but our anger can never be an excuse for abusing family members, damaging schools, attacking doctors or most seriously, engaging in terrorism.

Instead of pretending that anger doesn't exist, we should start teaching appropriate means of dealing with anger. When we experience anger feelings in ourselves or others, what we should “let go of” is the silly idea that we can remove anger with just a few sweet words. Instead, we should find reasonable solutions to the causes of those angry feelings. We need to accept anger as a natural emotion but stop using it as an excuse for violent and destructive behavior. Anger isn't wrong, but failure to deal with it appropriately is.

1.What is the writer's opinion about the “Positive Thinking” movement?

A.It can help people control their negative feelings.

B.It does not offer useful solutions for dealing with anger.

C.Following such advice can improve people's chances for success.

D.Most of the people who participate in such programs are dishonest.

2.The underlined expression “keep a lid on” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to________

A.freely express B.always forgive

C.hold inside D.completely forget

3.What information would have been useful to add to the final paragraph?

A.The names of some good books that talk about anger issues.

B.The viewpoints of people who hold the opposite opinion to the writer.

C.Different studies that provide some evidence supporting the writer's belief.

D.Some examples of how to deal with anger in a positive and beneficial way.

Opened in September 2005, Hong Kong Disneyland is the second Disney Park in Asia. It experienced a difficult time upon its opening. The Park, as well as two themed hotels, was built on Lantau Island.

The Park opened to strong competition in the form of Ocean Park. Hong Kong Disneyland is one of only two parks in Hong Kong, which has become one of the world's leading cities in recent years. It kept Chinese cultural traditions in mind when they built the Park to avoid a cultural backlash (抵制). Designers added to the custom of Feng Shui.

Disney and Hong Kong announced the Park in 1999, and construction began in 2003. The Park had one of the shortest construction periods in Disney history. Disney actually announced that the opening of the Park would be brought forward, from 2006 to September 2005.

The Park attracted 5.2 million visitors in its first year, below the expected 5.6 million. There was a lack of attractions, with Fantasyland opening with just one dark ride. Summer Passes were announced to increase the number of tourists. Autopia, Stitch Encounter and it's a Small World opened between 2006 and 2008 to offer more attractions at the Park.

The number of tourists dropped in 2007 to just over 4 million, so Disney planned a big expansion (扩大) project to attract more tourists and bring the Park back to its normal level. In July 2009, the Legislative Council of Hong Kong passed a three-land expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland, and in 2010, Toy Story Land opened.

These new attractions have certainly paid off, with the Park earning record profit (盈利) in 2013. In that year, over 7 million guests entered the Park.

With enough room for a second Park and the promise of more attractions to come, it seems that there is indeed a great beautiful tomorrow for Hong Kong Disneyland.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).

One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Danger is not what we expect. But the truth is that it often comes suddenly and unexpectedly. How can we get out of danger? There are many answers to this question. The key is whether we can face danger 1.(brave).

Dubya, the owner of the restaurant, happened to be_______by our table when I said those words.“You mean you expect me to _______ for you on Thanksgiving, too” he teased. “WellI guess you'll just have to come to our ________since the restaurant will be closed then.”

We'd become ________with Dubya and his wife, as we ate at Dubya's twice a week; however, I didn't think we were close enough to ________Thanksgiving dinner with his family. And, two days later, we reached Dubya's house. Everyone________ us. As expected, the food was delicious but the company was even better. We truly felt that we________there.

Of course, I wrote them a thank-you note the next week, but I couldn't really ________ into words what that Thanksgiving dinner ________ had meant to us. I've never forgotten their kindness and that very ________ Thanksgiving.

You probably love your dog more than you love some humans. The level of love and trust you feel toward your pet is probably not different from what you feel toward any other family member. But is the feeling mutual(相互的)1.

.He/She learns your routines.

Trust is understood differently for humans and animals.

2. So the best way to build a relationship with your dog is to make these routines positive interactions.

.His/Her eyes say it all.

When dogs and their owners stared into each other's eyes during a 30minute period, both of their oxytocin levels increased. Oxytocin has also been called the love hormone and the cuddle(拥抱) hormone.

3. And it is produced when we're around someone we love and trust. This result could mean that the dogs were trying to form bonds with their owners—definitely a sign of trust.

.4.

Typically, dogs sleep in a place that they are comfortable, so sleeping in an owner's room could certainly be an indication of comfort. The environment can affect whether your dog settles down in your room or on your bed. However, you may want to carefully weigh your pros and cons before you invite him/her into your bed.

.He/She doesn't see you angry often.

5. But a study suggested that dogs can read your emotions, and they're less likely to trust you when you're in a bad mood. When dogs saw the negative behavior, they were less willing to search for the treat.

AHe/She sleeps in your room.

BDon't be angry with your dog.

CHe/She enjoys comfortable places.

DIt's normal to get annoyed at your dog.

EHere's how to tell if your dog trusts you.

FIt's used to help mothers bond with their babies.

GPets rely on routines to feel normal and have happy lives.

I always had the best intentions of packing my lunch, but putting this healthy habit into practice was a different story. I was always jealous when I would see my coworkers with their cute food containers full of fresh ingredients(食材). Occasionally, I would be inspired to have a productive Sunday afternoon when I would cook my favorite food, but once Wednesday passed, I would be back on the street, trying to figure out what sounded good to eat.

However, to form the habit of packing my lunch is not an easy thing. At first, the idea of packing my lunch felt like a sacrifice, but since I started bringing healthy food to work, I have not given it up. I'm able to bring foods that are rich in fiber and protein, and I avoid ingredients that make my blood sugar rise sharply. This was the big kicker for me to keep this healthy habit for good.

Portion(份量) control has always been a big issue for me. If there is food on my plate, I'm going to eat it. By packing my own lunch, I'm easily able to manage portions and know my ingredient choices. Eating a cleaner and lighter lunch not only supports my general weight loss goals, but it also makes space for the occasional weeknight dinner out that I can enjoy freely.

When developing my budget for 2017, I made a point to get real about the large expenses I did not even realize. Until I looked at my credit card statement, I had no idea how much money I was spending on my lunch every week. It's hard in the big city to find something that's fresh, nutritious, and filling for under $10.That's $50 a week I could be saving…Quite a sum of money, isn't it?

A.she regrets making so many sacrifices

A.saves the time to buy ingredients

B.stops having dinner out on weekends

C.can eat in a cleaner and lighter way

D.makes room for her weightloss training

4.We can conclude from the last paragraph that packing her lunch to work in a sense ________.

A.has helped reduce her life expenses

B.has kept her blood sugar going up sharply

C.increases her chance to use the credit card

D.makes her get used to the life in big cities

October 15th is the Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. For example, donators(捐赠者) will give 150,000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.

Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after washing the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap. Partners include the United Nations Children’s Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Procter and Gamble. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germs(细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub(揉搓) it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. At last, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.

The Partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine(疫苗) or medicine. Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect(感染)themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.

A.Hand washing: so important---it gets a day of its own.

3.The last paragraph mainly tells us _________.

A.how to wash your hands correctly

B.why washing hands with soap is so important

C.the dangers of washing hands without soap

D.when we should especially wash our hands with soap

4.In which part of a newspaper would you most probably read this passage?
