I’m glad to share some idea about garbage classification with you, which was a hot topic these days all over China. To my understand, we should do whatever we can support it. After all, the earth is home to everyone and it’s our duty to provide a health environment voluntarily. Garbage classification isn’t easy in the beginning, and it’s meaningful. By doing so, it will do many good to the recycling of valuable resources. For our environment and life, we are expecting to learn to sort the rubbish and make it as a habit. Every individual can make the difference and bring a bright future for our planet.

Competition is a common phenomenon in our social life.1.There is constant competition for academic degrees, jobs, customers, money and so forth. In a sense, competition is one of the motive forces to the development of society.

2.Therefore, the only way to survive is to be competitive. Growing in a competitive environment is important for a child because future adult life is difficult. Finding a good job, for example, is an extremely competitive activity.

Today, most people try to get good education through various ways.3.The quality of people is rapidly increasing. Competition is more violent than what we thought it should be. The potentially successful job applicant has to be prepared in stronger position by gaining more qualifications and experience. In the business world, to beat your competitors, you must be better than the other employees.4.

In fact, the only way our world rewards people is to give honor to the winners, not to the losers. By attempting to compete at different activities, we learn to win and lose, gain experience and know our strengths and weaknesses. Competition prepares us for the tough things in life.5.

A.Otherwise, you will be defeated.

B.Modern society demands high-quality talents.

C.Learning to be competitive is clearly the best preparation for the tough life.

D.There are also many people who have higher degrees in their special fields.

E.Children have to learn to be competitive in order to adapt to modern society.

F.In the natural world, the weak will be replaced by the strong and the fittest can live.

G.We compete when we play games and when we try to do better than others in our study.

The race to 5G is on. All four major US carriers now have some form of 5G wireless, although it’s all limited roll-outs in only a few cities, mostly using expensive phones that won’t support future nationwide 5G networks. We’re tracking the roll-outs monthly on our Race to 5G page.

The early 5G roll-outs are more like a public test than a final product. ATT, Verizon, and T-Mobile are all using technologies that only travel about 800 feet from a cell site, which means there isn’t much coverage. All four carriers are waiting for upgrades(升级)to their base stations that will improve coverage, speed, and reliability. Around the end of this year or the beginning of 2020, ATT, Verizon, and T-Mobile all intend to launch 5G networks that use the existing 4G spectrum(频谱), which will have slower speeds but broader coverage.

We’ve tested ATT in Dallas and Las Vegas Sprint in Dallas and New York; Verizon in Chicago, New York, and Providence; and T-Mobile in New York. Every month, we’ve been seeing better performance and more new devices. It’s messy. It’s very early days. And if you like new technology, it’s very exciting.

In previous mobile transformations, we’ve seen most of the big changes happening years after the first announcement. Take 4G, for instance. The first 4G phones in the US appeared in 2010. But the sorts of 4G applications that changed our world didn’t appear until later. So following that plan. While we’re getting a little bit of 5G right now, you should expect the big 5G applications to crop up around 2021 or 2022.

5G stands for fifth-generation-cellular(蜂窝状的)wireless, and the initial standards of it were set at the end of 2017. But a set of standards doesn’t mean that all 5G will work the same-or that we even know what applications 5G will enable. There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage.

1.What is the present state of 5G in the US

A.Initial exploration. B.Great improvement.

C.Wide application. D.Extensive promotion.

2.Why does the author take 4G for example

A.To persuade carriers to give up 5G.

B.To remind people of 4G’s importance.

C.To prove 5G takes time to make a greater difference.

D.To show 5G has failed to meet expectations.

3.What’s the author’s attitude to 5G

A.Cautious. B.Skeptical.

C.Opposed. D.Objective.

4.What’s the best title for the text

A.Race to 5G B.5G is coming

C.How fast is 5G D.What is 5G

Kar-go is the invention of the United Kingdom-based Academy of Robotics, which describes it as”Europe's first road-worthy autonomous delivery vehicle".Using AI, this autonomous delivery vehicle offers customers an app---similar to one used when ordering a taxi- allowing them to choose when and where their packages are delivered. Cormpanies like Tesla and Amazon have invested heavily in autonomous vehicles, which have the potential to create a sea of changes in business and society.

Resembling something like a green egg on wheels, Kar-go's aim is to reduce the cost of what's known as the "last mile delivery challenge" . This is the final stage of your online package's journey ,from a local warehouse to your front door. Labor costs, paying drivers, the cost of fuel and the vehicle costs for maintaining small vehicles all contribute to making this the most expensive part of the delivery process. The first part of the package's journey is far cheaper, with high volumes of packages being transported to and from the same location. However, at the other end, drivers deliver smaller shipments to several different locations where the recipient may not even be available to collect.

With the latest AI technology, Kar-go will deliver goods safely ,sustainably and in style. The AI vehicle uses special technology to become an expert on its own individual route, learning from past experiences in order to help itself deal with new future obstacles(障碍物)on the road. Kar-go also has its very own internal sorting system, allowing the vehicle transport packages in the correct order for delivery.

By 2030the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders predicts the autonomous market could add $ 62 billion in economic growth in the UK, creating more than 420,000 new jobs.     Different countries have different tipping customs. When you travel, you need to know how to tip in the country that you’re in; otherwise you’ll leave servers angry everywhere you go.Here are just a few guidelines to tipping around the world.

Brazil

There will always be a standard 10% service charge added to your bill, and you won’t necessarily have to tip. If you do feel like being generous, an extra 5-10% will really make your server very happy. Just remember to do this as skillfully as possible—Brazilians don’t make a big show of this.

Dubai

In Dubai it’s a rule for restaurants to charge 10% tip on all restaurant and bar bills. You can add a couple of dirhams(迪拉姆,货币单位)to this if you feel like it. Waiters are not paid very much in Dubai, so it is always very appreciated.

Germany

German bars and restaurants will include the tip as part of what you owe, but that’s not all you have to pay. It is a custom to round the bill up after that, usually to the euro. This can be anywhere from 5-10%. When it’s time to settle up, you won’t get a bill: your waiter tells you the total and then you tell them how much you want to pay, including your “tip”, and hand over the money.

Czech Republic

While locals in the Czech Republic don’t leave tips, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.Foreign tourists are definitely expected to leave some kind of tip for service—as long as you’re in a high tourist traffic area, like Prague for instance. The standard tip is 10%.

India

If you like the service, go ahead and tip your server 5-10%. You have to adjust that amount though, based on how big the meal you’re eating is. If the bill is for a small meal, and totals less than 300 rupees, tip the full 10%. If the bill is higher, tip towards the 5%.

1.In which country do customers have to tip at least 10% for the service?

A.Dubai B.India

C.Germany D.Czech Republic

2.Which country has different tip cultures between citizens and foreigners?

A.Dubai B.Germany

C.India D.Czech Republic

3.If your bill is 2000 rupees in India, it is proper for you to tip________ rupees.

A.10 B.80

C.120 D.200

A Texas woman hired a photographer named Victoria Haltom to take her pictures. Following her client’s orders, Victoria heavily photoshoped (用图像处理软件修改) the pictures. Months later, Victoria received an unexpected email from the woman's husband.

“When I opened the album that she gave to me, my heart sank,” the husband wrote. “You're clearly a very talented photographer. Although the woman in these pictures is beautiful, she is not my wife. You made every one of her flaws (缺陷) disappear. I'm sure this is exactly what she asked you to do, but these pictures have taken away everything that makes up our life.”

“When you took away her stretch marks (妊娠纹), you took away the documentation of my children. When you took away her wrinkles, you took away over two decades of our laughter and our worries.”

“Seeing these images made me realize that I honestly do not tell my wife enough how much I love her. She thought these photoshopped images are what I want her to look like. I have to do better, and for the rest of my days I’m going to celebrate her in all her imperfections.”

A dog’s mind is only equal to that of a two-year-old baby. 1. Therefore, they are probably the first to notice any change in the behavior of their masters. Let’s do some deep-digging to understand the amazing ability of a dog.

They sense your feelings. Isn’t it strange? 2. This is true. A study published in the Animal Cognition journal says that dogs are known to come to people who appear sad or depressed. It doesn’t matter if the person is their owner or a stranger. They have an ability to sense sadness and are attached to troubled souls.

3. Dogs can easily tell when you’re playing with favorites, and if you reward or play more with other pets, your dog might notice it and feel uncomfortable. As they can’t say how they feel, they will scratch, yawn or lick their mouths.

They smell fear. Let’s say you’re faced with your worst fear. Would you get scared and run away or just face it? Before choosing how to deal with it, you should remember one thing. 4. Research shows that dogs often sense their masters’ responses in dangerous situations. If you fear something and choose to back away, chances are that your pet is going to do the same thing.

They’re watching you. We are all raised as respectable individuals who are taught to respect elders, obey the law and help out people in need from time to time. 5. But if you have a dog at home, it is time to be serious about them. Dogs like generous people. So just be careful around your pet; it may judge you on how you behave with others.

Drug companies have spent billions of dollars searching for therapies to reverse or significantly slow Alzheimer’s disease, but in vain. Some researchers argue that the best way to make progress is to create better animal models for research, and several teams are now developing mice that more closely imitate how the disease destroys people’s brains.

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH), the UK Dementia Research Institute and Jackson Laboratory (JAX) - one of the world’s biggest suppliers of lab mice - are among the groups trying to genetically design more suitable mice. Scientists are also exploring the complex web of mutations(突变) that influences neurological(神经学的) decline in mice and people.

“We appreciate that the models we had were insufficient. I think it’s sort of at a critical moment right now.” says Bruce Lamb, a neuro-scientist at Indiana University who directs the NIH-funded programme.

Alzheimer’s is marked by cognitive impairment(认知损伤) and the build-up of amyloid-protein plaques(淀粉样蛋白块) in the brains of people, but the disease does not occur naturally in mice. Scientists get around this by studying mice that have been genetically modified to produce high levels of human amyloid protein. These mice develop plaques in their brains, but they still do not display the memory problems seen in people.

Many experimental drugs that have successfully removed plaques from mouse brains have not lessened the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in people. One focused stumble came last month, when three companies reported that their Alzheimer’s drugs had failed in large, late-stage clinical trials. Although the drugs successfully blocked the accumulation of amyloid protein in mice, they seemed to worsen cognitive decline and brain shrinkage in people.

The drive for better mouse models comes as genomics studies are linking the most common form of Alzheimer’s to dozens of different genes. This diversity suggests that each case of the disease is caused by a different combination of genetic and environmental factors. “There is no single Alzheimer’s disease,” says Gareth Howell, a neuro-scientist at Jackson Laboratory (JAX) in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Howell argues that scientists’ reliance on lab mice with only a few genetically engineered mutations might have limited research. His own work suggests that in mice, just as in people, genetic diversity plays a part in determining how Alzheimer’s develops.

1.What do you know about the lab mice used for the Alzheimer’s research from the text?

A.The lab mice also display the memory problems.

B.Suitable lab mice are fundamental to the research.

C.Mice with Alzheimer’s disease suffer from mutations.

D.Drugs have been invented to slow Alzheimer’s disease.

2.From paragraph 5, we can know that the experimental drugs “__________”.

A.functioned well in large, early-stage clinical trials

B.fail to make people get rid of the relevant symptoms

C.successfully prevent people forming amyloid protein

D.worsen cognitive decline and brain shrinkage in mice

3.What does Gareth Howell think of Alzheimer’s?

A.It is various genes that count in the development of Alzheimer’s.

B.The increasingly polluted environment contributes to Alzheimer’s.

C.The most common form of Alzheimer’s is the drive for better mice.

D.It is caused by the accumulation of amyloid-protein plaques in people.

4.Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?

A.Experimental drugs successfully reverse Alzheimer’s

B.The real causes of Alzheimer’s have been confirmed

C.Alzheimer’s is the biggest memory killer in the aged

D.Frustrated Alzheimer’s researchers seek better lab mice

That the US stock market dropped sharply immediately after the US government put forward the proposal on Tuesday to tighten the control on exports of various artificial intelligence technologies indicates what the market thinks of the move.

Multi-national corporations have led the way in the profound compressing(压缩) of time and space that has flattened and changed the world over the last couple of decades, and the overwhelming majority of international technological transfers have been conducted among multi-national companies in pursuit of profits.

Thus the proposal the US government put forward on Tuesday to tighten the control to “avoid negatively impacting US leadership in the science, technology, engineering and manufacturing sector” is being viewed not only as a brake on the US economy but also as a barrier to maintaining that leadership since it will reduce cooperation with the rest of the world and shrink the market for US companies preventing them from investing research and development.

The bigger its market, the more profits a technology company can earn, and the more money it then has to invest in developing even more advanced technologies. This is as true for US companies as it is for others.

Behind the proposal is the narrow-mindedness of policymakers in the US administration, who choose to ignore the fact that the United States would not have become the world leader in science and technology if it had kept its doors closed.

If such controls are intended to contain China’s development, they will certainly fail.

It is true that China has a lot to do to catch up with the US and other developed countries. Yet it has made great steps forward by opening its doors and cooperating with other economies.

As it opens its door wider, it will have even more opportunities to cooperate with other countries in science and technology.

The de-materialization of economic activities with economic output and income generation increasingly reliant on information rather than inputs of raw materials only increases the need for cooperative agreements and a cross-disciplinary approach to increase the capabilities of AI and advance its application.

By trying to enforce and exploit an invented-here ideal that is untenable, the US will undoubtedly lose the leadership in science and technology gradually to which it has become accustomed, and prevent the progress of both humans and machines.

1.What does the market think of the proposal put forward by the US on Tuesday?

A.It will tighten the control on exports of various AI technologies.

B.It will become drawbacks which prevent the US from developing fast.

C.If the US had kept its door closed, it would have become the superpower.

D.If the market becomes bigger, a technology company can earn more profits.

2.What influence will the proposal have on China’s development?

A.It will increase the capabilities of AI in China.

B.It won’t stop China’s development though it aims to.

C.It won’t let China become the world leader in science.

D.It will make China lose many opportunities after it takes effect.

3.What conclusion can we draw from the passage?

A.Most of International technological transfers will be conducted so as to seek profits.

B.The US has become accustomed to its leadership in technology and will maintain it.

C.The US will suffer from its control of a variety of artificial intelligence technologies.

D.China has made too big steps in science & technology to cooperate with other countries.
