Dear John,

How time flies! I’m very glad to hear you again. You want to know which is going on in schools in China. In the word, everything has changed. Every school take part in the campaign of reducing learning load. In the past, I used to studying until 11: 30 on weekends. But now I can arrange things of my own, such as readme books, visiting museums, or take computer lessons on weekends. In the evening I can watch news on the TV, or read newspapers. What’s more, my parents support me. They think because I am a student, I don’t have to study all day long. I think the idea of reducing learning load was well accepted by everyone.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Hua

Homework is a major part of going to school: It's your teachers' way of evaluating(评价) how much you understand of what's going on in class.1. Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

Be sure you understand the homework.

Write your homework down in your notebook or day planner if you need to.2.It's much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night!

Many schools have study halls that are specifically designed to allow students to study. It's tempting(诱惑) to hang out with friends during study periods or unstructured(松散的) time.3.

Take a break.

4. So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15 minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

5.

If you don't finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then budget your time. Most high school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it's a heavy homework day and you've got an assignment in every subject, you'll need to devote more time to homework.     Ever since it was created 30 years ago, The Simpsons, the longest running prime-time(黄金时段) TV show in the country, has become part of US life. So when TV critics Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz ranked the 100 greatest comedies and dramas broadcast in the US ,it came as no surprise that The Simpsons was their top choice.

This was the show that changed the very concept of cartoons in Western society. Before it appeared, cartoons were considered a way to learn and have fun, not serious adult entertainment. The Simpsons changed this. The genius of the show is that it has something to offer both adults and children.

It’s a hugely entertaining program that’s also full of satire(讽刺的) and clever humor.A remark by Chitra Ramaswamy in The Guardian gave a sense of the esteem(敬重) in which The Simpsons is held:“Nothing before or since has match its capacity to be at once so profoundly clever and so unbelievably stupid.”

The show’s creators make fun of the US government, social customs, and of course, the idea of family life. But unlike most classic US prime-time TV characters the Simpsons are a dys-functional(功能失调的) family.

Bart, the boy, is always in trouble---both at home and at school. That may be in part because of his paternal example. Homer Simpson, perhaps the most iconic(标志性的) character, is a beer-swilling, overweight slob(懒汉) who is normally found in front of the TV. And Marge, Homer’s wife and the mother of the family, spends most of her time cooking, cleaning or trying to fix the messes that Bart and Homer make.

The smartest member of the family is daughter Lisa, who does well in school but is no goody-goody(讨好卖乖的人)---Lisa never misses an opportunity to challenge authority. The youngest member of the family is baby Maggie, who will likely be as much of a handful as her brother and sister when she grows up.

But although the Simpsons are a problem family, viewers are always on their side. One of the reasons why the show has remained so popular all these years is that the characters are so lovely. Millions of us identify with them. They are a working class family struggling to make ends meet. They aren’t perfect, but then, who is? And after 30 years, this is still what strikes a chord (引起共鸣)with millions of viewers worldwide.

My uncle set up a small business in our city four years ago. He is known as using iron from old cars to make beautifully art pieces. Last summer vacation, I visit him and he showed to me many of his works. Some are larger pieces looked like animals and humans, and others are smaller pieces you can put at home. He often encourages me to be creative like himself. The art tells people the important of environmental protection. What’s more, it shows that even irons can be brought back to life with little creativity.

A simple, yet powerful UK program has been fighting elderly loneliness by recruiting young adults as volunteers to read to seniors with vision problems and mental diseases.

Lily has benefited from the program having her vision “restored” by 15-year-old Amy, a school girl who was paired with Lily through the Reading Friends project. Lily was a librarian and enthusiastic reader who would read “two to three books every week”. After developing a terrible disease, however, Lily found herself unable to read or watch television for any length of time without her eyes hurting. Not only have Lily’s regular reading sessions with Amy helped to reconnect her with her passion for literature, they have also built a song inter-generational friendship between the two ladies. “I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,” Lily said. “But we have only got through two books so far because we end up catting too much. We have read two historical novels and get on very well.” Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others. Evidence also shows that reading has a positive impact on the elderly’s will-being and can reduce the risk of developing mental diseases.

Rose, a teacher, is responsible for connecting school children like Amy with the program—and she says that it has had an amazing impact on the youngsters. “We have wonderful young people at our school and we wanted to get then into the community,” Rose said. “It has been fantastic to see them blossom as well as improving their literacy and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lily that they are making friendships with and library staff can help them, not only with education but outside as well.”

Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it's been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing (冲洗)off raw poultry. Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria.

The do — not — wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important.

But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging.

The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli (大肠杆菌)and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.

To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren't out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.

1.People don't accept USDA's advice because____.

A.the advice is relatively new

B.cleaning seems more trustworthy

C.cooks clean the turkey before cooking it

D.heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food

2.What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?

A.Food packages carry germs.

B.Hands and surfaces are easy to get E. coli.

C.Germs from a turkey can be spread whether it is washed or not.

D.Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs.

3.Which way may help to cook a turkey safely?

A.Rinse off the turkey before it is heated.

B.Keep the turkey away from the lettuce and refrigerator.

C.Wash hands and packages before taking out the turkey.

D.Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey.

4.From which section of a magazine is the text probably taken?

We didn’t expect to see her again so soon: After a tearless farewell with my daughter, we left her new dorm room but then in the campus we saw her jogging against the August heat. I quickly rolled down the car window and Sarina didn’t miss a step as she turned, nodded at us and waved goodbye. I was in disbelief why the tears hadn’t come when we parted on her first day in university.

Our first separation, the day she left my body, was a nightmare of pain and suffering. While all births are amazing, not all women feel amazed about the births. However, our togetherness in the days and months that followed was so sweet that I felt her small body still seemed to be attached to mine. In the years to come, the sound of her feet running across the wooden floors of our house was like the gentle pounding that reminded me my little girl was here and that someday she would run to the paths I couldn’t follow.

Last year Sarina turned 16 and decided to pursue art in college. She was in excitement about college life with so much to expect but I was uneasy because it would be a long plane ride away from home. I tried to imagine what separation would be like, but I couldn’t. Separation, although on the horizon, still felt distant.

That’s why it wasn’t until the next morning when I awoke in a house absent of her footsteps that the tears finally came—and wouldn’t stop. I understood that Sarina had left the house, and I held onto the memory of her running. When the tears stopped, I was relieved that her body knew what it needed on separation day, and that with our love and support, she had the courage to run into an unfamiliar distance, to glance back, yet to keep moving forward.

1.What happened to the author on her daughter’s first day in college?

A.She burst into tears and had a painful farewell.

B.She appeared calm and didn't cry at their departure.

C.She asked her daughter to show them around the campus.

D.She was cross that her daughter went jogging when they departed.

2.What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?

A.To expect her daughter’s bright future.

To shoot a scene of people eating food, you need two different perspectives (角度). To record a bus journey to school, you need three quick cuts. To complete this short, morning rush-hour video blog – or “vlog” – you need four pieces of music. 1.

With more than 90 million vlogs available online, and 2,000 posted every hour on the YouTube video-sharing site, CBS News says they are mainstream with people born after 1995.

2. More young Chinese people have become inspired to grab a camera and recount the details of their day on Sina Weibo, Bilibili or WeChat Moments.

“The most important thing about vlogging is to tell a good story. Other visual effects are auxiliary (辅助的),” wrote US vlogger Casey Neista, who has almost 10 million subscribers on YouTube.

Chinese vlogger Wang Xiaoguang is an example of a good storyteller. In one of his popular vlog posts, Wang tells the story of traveling to Japan. While there, he took a ride in the wrong direction and got lost. Worse, he forgot to bring a phone charger. 3.

Another key aspect of vlogs is that the content is based on everyday life, according to Ouyang Nana, 18, a young Chinese musician. She documents her life at Berklee College of Music. Ordinary as vlogs are, as many as 15 million fans share her wows and woes (喜怒哀乐) on a daily basis.

4. Peng Yixuan, a news reporter with China Daily, recorded her first experience attending and reporting on the two sessions in March of this year. With a relaxed, chatty and personal approach, she presented the conferences, “bringing more warmth” to the grand political event, according to People’s Daily.

There are popular vlogs for beauty, gaming, fashion, food and travel. Vloggers are learning new ways to experience the thrill of them. 5. Then what are you waiting for? Grab a camera!

A.They come from all walks of life.

B.However, he didn’t take the number of his hotel.

C.Vlogging has taken China by storm over the past year.

D.Some other popular vloggers choose to show their careers.

E.Vlogs pave the way for future advertising and sales campaigns.

F.Luckily he was able to borrow money from a stranger and escape trouble.

G.Vloggers have these techniques in mind as they film their daily activities.

Chinese consumers' crazy appetite for luxury goods and services appears unstoppable, with just 2 percent of the Chinese population responsible for one-third of the world's luxury items.

As China's economic miracle develops, the market opportunities for all sorts of luxury goods and services are increasing.Luxury consumption in China now extends ways beyond well-known car, clothing and jewelry brands. For example, the luxury jet market in China is the fastest-growing in the world, even outstripping that of the United States, with a market share of 25 percent. This trend appears to continue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, compared with only 2 to3 percent in the US.But more importantly,China's luxury jet market growth represents a major development in the private consumption of luxury items.

China's high-quality red wine market also provides evidence of the growth in private consumption of luxury goods. In 2013,China became the largest market for red wine in the world, even overtaking France, with l.86 billion bottles consumed in China last year.Over the past five years,China's red wine consumption has grown 136 percent.

According to my ongoing consumer research in this area while working at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, public consumption of such expensive global luxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to "gain face" and publicly display social climbing through material possessions. On the other hand,it is "self-reward" that lies behind consumer motivation in this area.Chinese consumers who have experienced rapid financial and economic gains appear particularly prone to the need to reward themselves for their success. But this has little to do with "gaining face" and impressing others and much more to do with the need for personal contentment.

Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is set to continue in part due to the maturity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally.

How to read more and learn more

These days, more and more Chinese people enjoy sending and receiving messages on the phone. It can help them to get the latest news and communicate with friends. But I think I should read more books besides the textbooks, the more, the better. It can broaden my mind and improve my language skills.1.  Here are some tips for you.

Clear your purpose for reading.

2.Most people read for two main reasons, pleasure or knowledge. Clearing about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read, but also remind you why reading the book is important to you, so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.

3.

No matter what you are reading, it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may introduce you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.

Give up books that you don’t enjoy.

You may have chosen books that you are interested in, and they are right purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don’t enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading, give it up. 4.

Set a reading goal.

It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don’t have a due date! I don’t need to return those books.

5.Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.

A.Read only what you are interested in.

B.Read the books borrowed from others.

C.Remember reading shouldn’t be a burden(负担).

D.Of course, it also can help me to get good grades.

E.We need to get the latest news and communicate with friends.

F.Before you start reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book.

G.Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day.

With the start of the new term, the students around the country exchange their fun and fashionable clothes for boring school uniforms. But not all schools are fashion deserts. Colorful sports shoes, school bags, T-shirts and even drink containers are breathing life into campuses.

"The uniform makes us look like a bunch of clones, especially when we are doing morning exercises on the playground," said Qing Pei, a Senior 2 from Shanghai Qibao High School. "But the boys wear different sports shoes and girls have different decorations in their hair. These are the areas where you can express

yourself," said Qing.

Although it might be strange for boys to talk about fashion, they do care about what they wear in school, especially shoes, according to Qing.

"Nike and Adidas basketball shoes, although they are still the must-have items for many of my friends, are becoming out-of-date," Qing added. He explained that "Since Liu Xiang ran so fast in Athens, running shoes are becoming popular in this autumn. "

"Still in fashion are the various baseball caps and American-style T-shirts with random (随意的) English words printed on them," said Qing. "The accuracy of the written message is not important. Often, the words are misspelt. Sometimes they  do not even make sense, "Qing said with a smile.

Besides sports shoes and T-shirts, styles and colors of school bags are another opportunity for students to express their taste in fashion. Some bags are made more eye-catching by decorating them with small hanging dolls.

Other fashionable items are the colorful drink containers which are now popular among girls this term.

"Some teachers are surprised to see a teenager sucking a bottle like this at school and criticize it as a childish regression (退化). But some girls just love it," said Yang Rui, a Senior 3. from High School attached to Xi’an Jiaotong University.
