Friendships can be sources of joy and sources of sorrow. There isn’t exactly a rule book on what to do when things get tense or bad.1..

Broken promises

Jan Yager, a specialist in this field often hears from people who’ve been hurt by a friend’s broken promise. Dr. Yager likes to point out we don’t have formal contracts with friends where we’ve agreed to never disappoint each other. Therefore if you bring a fantasy about what the ideal friend will do in any situation to a relationship, 2..

When things feel unbalanced

It doesn’t feel great when you check Facebook Monday morning to find out that your friends went on a weekend getaway without you. Scott Christnelly, another specialist, says, “I encourage clients to express their feelings about it but also not to jump to conclusions.” Then find someone else to talk to — maybe, a family member, or a close friend (not the one who went on the trip) — to explain how you feel.     Dutch officials toasted on Tuesday the opening of what is being called the world’s first 3D-printed concrete bridge, which is meant to be used by cyclists. There was applause as officials wearing hard hats and workmen’s jackets rode over the bridge on their bikes at the opening ceremony in the southeastern town of Gemert.

“The bridge is not very big, but it was rolled out by a printer which makes it unique,” Theo Salet, from the Eindhoven University of Technology, told Dutch broadcaster NOS. Work on printing the bridge, which has some 800 layers, took about three months after starting in June and it is made of pre-stressed concrete, according to the university. “One of the advantages of printing a bridge is that much less concrete is needed than in the conventional technique in which a mould (泥浆) is filled,” it said on its website, adding “a printer deposits the concrete only where it is needed.”

The eight-metre (26-foot) bridge crosses a water-filled channel to connect two roads, and it was tested for safety to bear loads of up to two metric tons in cooperation with the BAM Infra Construction Company. “Although designed for bikes, it could take up to 40 trucks,”the designers said. “We are looking to the future,” said the head of BAM, Marinus Schimmel. “3D printing meant fewer rare resources were needed and there was significantly less waste,” he added.

The Netherlands is among countries, with the United States and China, taking a lead in this cutting-edge technology, using computers and robotics to construct objects and structures from scratch without using much traditional manpower. Last year a Dutch architect unveiled (提示) a unique 3D printer with which he hopes to construct an “endless loop” building. And a Dutch start-up called MX3D has begun printing a stainless-steel bridge, of which a third is already completed. The aim is to finish printing by March and lay the bridge over an Amsterdam canal in the future.

1.According to the text, what makes the bridge unique?

A.It adopts 3D printing.

B.It opens only to cyclists.

C.It is made of new material.

D.It uses much less concrete.

2.Which does Marinus Schimmel agree ?

A.In theory, it can support up to 40 bicycles.

B.The kind of bridge is energy-saving.

C.The kind of bridge is safer than traditional ones.

D.The technology has been used widely.

3.Which statement is true based on the last paragraph?

A.The project of an “endless loop” building has begun.

B.A stainless-steel bridge has been half constructed.

C.China is a country with advanced 3D printing.

D.3D printing technology needs no manpower.

Can you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of us have to bother — as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.

Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long-standing interest in psychology. Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation — or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary? At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo (光环) around it; we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.

But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices (偏见) can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require power. And as you might expect, good-looking people of both sexes run into envy — one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.

More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care. We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good-looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people.

To conclude, scientists point out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiety — even for those already blessed with good looks. “If you are crazy about attractiveness, it may affect your experience and interactions,” she says. It’s an outdated saying, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.

1.From paragraph 1, we can learn that        .

A.some may be bothered by their unattractive appearance

B.most people are not afraid of being too beautiful

C.we might always dream about being bothered by others

D.being too beautiful can be a problem bothering everyone

2.Which is right according to the passage?

A.Doctors care more about beautiful patients.

B.Beautiful people tend to have a healthy body.

C.Attractive women and men have equal chance of leadership.

D.Focusing too much on your appearance can be harmful.

3.What’s the meaning of the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?

A.The more beautiful outside, the less beautiful inside.

B.Beauty can help make a better personality.

C.Beauty cannot make up for bad personalities.

D.Ugly people have more confidence in their personality.

4.What might be the best title for the passage?

A.What is Real Beauty? B.The Bad Effects of Beauty

C.Benefits of Beauty D.Beauty, a Blessing?

I was about 30 years old and was working as a firefighter in the South Bronx’s Engine Co. 82. It was a restful Sunday and between alarms I rushed to the office to read a copy of the New York Times. I read an article on the Book Review section which openly stated what I thought to be a calumny — that William Butler Yeats had gone beyond his Irishness and was forever to be known as a universal poet. As I read it, my blood began to boil.

There were few things I was more proud of than my Irish root, and ever since I first picked up a book of his poems from a shelf when I was in the military, Yeats had been my favorite Irish writer, followed by Sean O’Casey and James Joyce.

I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote out a letter of anger to the editor. Throughout Yeats’ poetry, his view of the world and the people in it was basically Irish. He had lived his life and written his poetry in a truly Irish way. It was annoying to think Irishness was something to be transcended (超越).

I don’t know why I felt it my duty to safeguard the reputation of the world’s greatest poet. I just knew that I had to write that letter.

After my letter got published, I received a letter from The New Yorker, asking for an interview. When my article Fireman Smith appeared in that magazine, the editor of a large publishing firm called me, asking if I was interested in writing a book about my life. I had little confidence to write a whole book, though the subject was worthy. I wrote Report From Engine Co. 82 in six months, and it sold really well. In the years that followed, I wrote three more best-sellers.

Being a writer had been far from my expectations. How had it happened? I often found myself thinking about it, and my thoughts always came back to that letter to the New York Times. For me, the writing was a natural consequence of the passion (热情) I felt and the subjects represented the great values burning within me as I wrote.

Over the years, my five children have come to me with one dilemma or another. My answer is always the same. Think about what you’re feeling and measure the heat of the fire in your heart, for that is your passion. Your education and your experience will guide you toward making a right decision, but your passion will enable you to make a difference in whatever you do. That’s what I learned the day I stood up for Ireland’s greatest poet.

1.Why did the author write to New York Times?

A.To present his love for literature.

B.To spread Irish culture to the world.

C.To show off his writing.

D.To defend the reputation of an Irish poet.

2.What does the underlined word “calumny” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.A false statement. B.A great honor.

C.A total lie. D.A good reason.

3.Which statement is true according to the text?

A.The author thinks Yeats is more universal than Irish.

B.The author’s passion is the key to his success in writing.

C.Yeats’s poems inspires the author to be a writer.

D.The author believes education and experience count most.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Yeats, my Irish hero

B.My writing career

C.A letter that changed my life

D.Honesty is the best policy

Learning to Give a Pep Talk (打气)

Everyone wants to be the type of person who gives the critical talk that turns around a friend's outlook. However, giving a good pep talk isn't easy. 1. . You need to not only listen and understand, but also stress the other person's strengths. You also need to know when to stop talking.

"A lot of people think they are giving a pep talk, but they are just saying what they would want to hear," says Stacy Kaiser, a psychotherapist (心理治疗师)in Los Angeles.

Instead of instantly telling someone what to do, ask him what actions he has thought about taking and why he thinks they will be beneficial. “Don't jump right in and insist 'You'll be fine,'" says Kaiser. 2., Repeat the person's concerns out loud, so he feels heard. Then, show your friend that you believe in him and that he has what it takes to get through this hard time. Stress his strengths.

3. . You can't!  guarantee success, but you can remind the person that he has been through a tough time before and has gotten through it

At last, Kaiser says you must know when to stop. “4. . Don't argue if the person disagrees with what you are saying. Instead, tell him 'I am sorry you are having such a hard time,' And then back down."

Kaiser says he has learned to give good pep talks by giving bad ones. He lost a number of loved ones during a short period. “Timing is everything." There is a time to give a pep talk, and there is a time to just listen. 5.   .

A.Let your friend have his moment

B.Give your pep talk and then shut up

C.Arguing with your friend makes no sense

D.Show your friend that you understand why he is sad

E.He isn't interested in what his best friends really need

F.It requires an understanding of what your audience needs

G.It is also important to remember that pep talks are about hope

More than 11,000 scientists are warning that the Earth, in their words, "clearly and unequivocally (明确地)faces a climate emergency.” The scientists represent several fields of study and come from 150 countries around the world. They approved a report that appeared in the publication Bioscience earlier this month. It warns that the world would face "untold human suffering" if it does not make deep and lasting shifts in human activities that influence climate change. Three leaders of the study are from the United States. They worked on the study with scientists from universities in South Africa and Australia. This is the first time a large group of scientists have jointly (共同地)used the word "emergency" when talking about climate change.

"Despite 40 years of global climate negotiations ...we have generally conducted business as usual and have largely failed to address this worrying situation,” the study said. “Climate change has arrived and is accelerating faster than many scientists expected."

The report identified five areas that the world needs to deal with immediately. The scientists appealed to nations to use energy more efficiently and cut their use of fossil fuels. They suggested that lawmakers approve taxes on the burning of carbon-based fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas. The report urges people to move toward more of a plant-based diet. Other areas of concern include preventing the destruction of forests and permanent loss of some plant and animal species. The report noted that it will most likely take strong actions by the public to move politicians to approve lasting policy changes.

The scientists added, "We believe that the prospects (前景)will be greatest if decision-makers and all of humanity quickly respond to this warning and declaration of a climate emergency, and act to support life on planet Earth, our only home.”

1.What will happen to people if they don't stop the activities that influence the climate change?

A.They will have no places to live in.

B.They will be fined and lose their jobs.

C.They will become bored with their life.

D.They will go through a lot of sufferings.

2.What have people done when facing the climate change in the past 40 years?

A.They have ignored the scientists’ warning,

B.They have solved the problem successfully.

C.They have talked too much but done too little.

D.They have realized the problem isn’t that serious.

3.In which paragraph can we find the advice from the scientists about ways to control the climate change ?

A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2.

C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Scientists' Hard Work of Saving the Earth

B.l he Important Reasons of Climate Change

Ants know when an earthquake is about to strike, researchers have discovered. Their behavior changes significantly prior to the quake and they resume normal functioning only a day after it. Gabriele Berberich of the University Duisburg-Essen in Germany presented these findings on Thursday at the European Geosciences Union annual meeting in Vienna according to LiveScience.

Berberich and her colleagues discovered that red wood ants preferred to build their colonies right along active faults in Germany. They counted 15,000 mounds (土堆)lining the faults. These faults are the places where the earth violently bursts in earthquakes.

Using a special camera that tracked changes in activity. Berberich and her colleagues tracked the ants round the clock for three years, 2016 to 2019. They found that the ants' behavior changed only when the quake was over magnitude (级数)2. There were 10 earthquakes between magnitude 2.0 and 3.2 during this period, and many smaller ones. Humans can also sense quakes of over magnitude 2 only.

According to Berberich, normal ant activity consists of going about collecting food etc, during the day and resting in the night But before an earthquake, the ants didn't go back to their mound in the night and moved around outside it. This strange and abnormal behavior continued till a day after the earthquake, Berberich told a news conference, according to Livescience.

How do ants know an earthquake is coming? Berberich suggested that they could either be picking up changing gas emissions or noting tiny changes in the Earth's magnetic fields (磁场). "Red wood ants have special cells which can detect changes in carbon dioxide levels. They also have special cells for detecting electromagnetic fields." she said. Berberich and her colleagues are planning to continue the research in areas where there are more and bigger earthquakes

But my parents reminded me that math makes money, so off to engineering school I went In my post-university young-adult life, I've managed to become ^traditionally successful."  As a female engineer, I worked for a big oil company and owned a home. My life was laid out in front of me. and I didn't like what I saw.

So, I did what any respectable 24-year-old would do and left my life behind. I said goodbye to my boyfriend and pulled out my suitcase. I threw myself alone into the world with the grace and beauty of a baby deer taking its first steps with skateboards under its feet. I bloodied my knees mountain biking through the red rocks of Utah. I spent four days struggling through Yellowstone with 50 pounds on my back. Two Peruvian women along my Andean journey taught me how to roast coffee and helped me practice Spanish. It wasn't Vienna's cultural museums; it was a sunny piece of grass beside the Danube river with someone from my hostel (青年旅社) who quickly became a friend. It wasn't Yellowstone's Old Faithful geyser (间歇喷泉)launching into the air; it was charging through Montana's ordinary landscape playing music so loud that the car windows shook. The truth is, I didn't actually need to be abroad to have almost any of my favorite experiences. They were just small everyday moments that happened to happen abroad, leading me to realize that the true value of my flight tickets were not the landmarks, but rather becoming an active participant in my own life.

I now spend less time online shopping and more time lying alone on the floor listening to an album cover — to — cover. I ask my friends how they're doing. Sometimes I surprise them with flowers to see them smile. I tell everyone to have a good day.

One evening after work, I found a beautiful little fox with a injured leg. She was like a Disney fox. Then I fed her some fish. A couple of week later the fox was back, completely better and had visited ever since. She was comfortably enough to come really near to me. She allowed me to photographing her, the best of which I posted it on social media. Soon after, one day she took her cubs together to visit me, that was really unexpected. It’s amazed to have this connection with something so wild this busy city. But happily the loving fox still keeps turning up.

You know that eating healthy, staying active, and solving a few brain games can help keep your memory. But the following lesser-known habits work wonders too.

1. 1.

When we sit with our shoulders bent forward, this defeated position actually causes us to feel anxious or depressed — which makes it harder to think clearly and remember things. Conversely (反过来), straight upright posture apparently improves memory because it boosts blood and oxygen flow to the brain.

2. Exercise — Once

Having trouble remembering faces? 2. In a study, pictures of faces were shown to

older folks after they pedal a stationary (静止的) bike at an intense pace or simply sit on a self-pedaling bike. On average, people remembered the faces better after the intense exercise. What’s more, the memory gains after a single workout were similar to the gains after 3 months of regular exercise.

3. Limit TV

Every parent and grandparent has heard that too much screen time can hurt a child’s

cognitive development. 3. According to a study, people (aged 50 or older) who watched

more than 3.5 hours of TV a day for 6 years experienced a greater drop in verbal memory test scores than those who watched less.

4. Draw aimlessly

A research shows those who drew the words remembered the most when recalling words. That’s because while some parts of the brain about getting memory back become worse as people

grow older, the picture processing regions usually don’t. 4.

5. Walk Backward

5. Walk back! Backward motion — whether real, imagined, or watched — helps people remember the information better than sitting still and, in most cases, better than forward motion. It may be that moving backward in space mentally helps us move back in time to the moment we learned something.

A.Sit Tall.

B.Stand Straight.

C.Start more workouts.

D.Sweat for physical training.

E.Thus sketching can help adults keep their memory sharp.

F.But what about those at the other end of their life span?

G.Next time you’re trying to recall something, don’t just think back.

East Africa is experiencing the worst desert locust outbreak in decades. Climate events have accelerated breeding of the pest across the region, and with a sudden rise in the locust population expected in coming weeks, urgent actions and funds are needed to prevent a human crisis.

Twenty million people in six of the eight East African countries are most affected by an ongoing desert locust outbreak at risk of serious food insecurity. Considered among the most destructive of moving pests, an adult locust can consume 2g of plants per day, affecting crops and grasslands. A group typically holds 20 to 150 million locusts per square kilometer and can move hundreds of kilometers per day, invading areas covering millions of square kilometers. An active group, therefore, can destroy crops and grasslands within a very short period of time.

That global warming could increase the risk of desert locust crisis was proposed over ten years ago, and in February, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the current outbreak is linked to the effects of climate change: “warmer seas mean more perfect breeding ground for locusts”. The outbreak has its origins in 2018, when a series of windstorms in the Arabian Peninsula (阿拉伯半岛) enabled the warm and wet conditions the desert locust requires to breed and band undetected in remote regions. Though our focus here is migration west, dreadful outbreaks of the desert locust have been experienced to the east.

The situation is going out of control. A rescue operation and financial support admit no delay.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) can take out only US$138 million for rapid response and immediate action — controlling the spread of the desert locust and safeguarding livelihoods. They say the maths is clear: about half the funding (资助) is needed for supervision, ground and sky control, and uniting efforts; the other half is needed for livelihoods and food security of farmers. As for the huge gap, they have called on the international community to act now through funding. However, by the end of February, just US$69 million had been promised.

This most alarming crisis has developed and is worsening in East Africa. The funds needed to control the situation become very difficult to achieve and the gap is a big concern.

1.Why does the crisis happen in East Africa?

A.There is a big population there.

B.There are large deserts and grasslands.

C.Africa lies west of Arabian Peninsula.

D.Good climate for breeding plays a role.

2.Why does the writer list those figures in Para 2?

A.To warn of the terrible damage by locusts.

B.To help us understand how locusts live.

C.To show how many locusts there are now.

D.To draw a picture of the present Africa.

3.What can we infer from the text?

A.The crisis is not noticed until recently.

B.More fund is needed to prevent the crisis.

C.The crisis has been the focus of the world.

D.Locusts are all from the Arabian Peninsula.

4.Which is the best title for the text?

A.Killing locusts before too late

B.Global warming, a world problem

C.Funding Gap for Locust Crisis

D.Africa, a crisis-stricken place

Pinocchio may be just a children’s fairy tale, but Spanish scientists at the University of Granada recently investigated this so-called “Pinocchio effect” and found that our noses don’t grow when we tell a lie, but actually shrink a bit.

Dr. Gómez Milán and his team developed a lie detector test that used thermography(体温计)to tell if people were lying, and found that whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of the tip of their nose dropped up to 1.2, while the temperature of their forehead increased up to 1.5. Scientist also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to slightly shrink, although the difference is undetected by the human eye.

“One has to think in order to lie, which rises the temperature of the forehead,” Dr. Gómez Milán explained the findings. “At the same time we feel anxious, which lowers the temperature of the nose.”

For this study, researchers asked a number of 60 students to perform various tasks while their temperature is scanned by technology. One of these tasks required making a 3 to 4 minutes call to their parents or a friend and telling a significant lie. Participants had to make up the lie themselves during the call. Interestingly, this lie detector picked up the “Pinocchio effect” temperature difference in 80 percent of the test subjects, which is a better rate of success than that of any modern lie detector.

“With this method we have achieved to increase accuracy”, said Dr. Gómez Milán, who added that law enforcement interviewers could one day combine other lie detection technology with thermal imaging to achieve better results.

1.Why does the writer talk about Pinocchio in the first paragraph?

A.To tell a fairy tale. B.To give an example.

C.To talk about a scientist. D.To introduce the topic.

2.What is “Pinocchio effect”?

A.Our noses will grow when we tell a lie.

B.Our noses will shrink when we tell a lie.

C.The temperature of the forehead falls if we lie.

D.The temperature of the student rises for anxiety.

3.How did Dr. Gómez Milán feel about the lie detector?

A.Doubtful. B.Surprised.

C.Confident. D.Puzzled.

4.What lesson can we learn from the text?

A.A lie will travel very hard. B.Many ways to bring a liar to light.

C.A lie never lives to be old. D.Once a liar always a liar.

Amanda Seyfried didn’t grow up with dogs. With her busy work schedule, she didn’t think she could take care of a dog. In fact, she wasn’t looking for a furry friend at all.

But then she met Finn. Today, the 34-year-old actress, who’s known for films Mamma Mia, is a dog owner and a spokeswoman at the welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society.

“I can’t imagine my life without him,” Seyfried says of 6.5-year-old Australian shepherd Finn, who is allowed on her U.S. set. If for some reason he can’t join Seyfried on location --- like on a recent trip when she traveled from France to China, Seyfried requests from her dog sitter twice — daily videos of him.

Now with a new video for Best Friends Animal Society, she calls herself Finn’s “stage mother.”

Seyfried and Finn shot an 80s-themed video for the 9000StepsChallenge, which asks animal owners to walk 9,000 steps with their pets on the ninth day of the month to raise awareness to the fact that more than 9,000 dogs and cats are euthanized (安乐死) in shelters each day because there’s not enough room.

As for the video shoot, in which Seyfried and Finn walked the 9,000 steps --- it was more exhausting than a long walk. Seyfried was Finn’s trainer on the shoot. She believes that instead of being Finn’s cp-star, she’ll go back to being BFFs.

1.Why did Seyfried originally refuse a pet dog?

A.She wasn’t not yet a spokeswoman.

B.She wasn’t used to being with a dog.

C.She was too busy to care for a dog.

D.She had not enough room for a dog.

2.Who does the underlined word “him” in paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Finn. B.Seyfried.

C.The dog sitter. D.Finn’s best friend.

3.Why did Seyfried shoot the video together with Finn?

A.To show how deep she loves Finn.

B.To train Finn to have a long walk.

C.To take part in an animal cp-star show.

D.To call on public attention to pets’ life.

4.Which section of a newspaper is this text most likely from?

A.News B.Life
