I have two kids, a boy and a girl. I don’t worry about my girl; I’m sure she’ll be well trained in mixed martial arts. I worry about my son. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be feminine (女性化的). Sorry to say that, but let’s face it. No dad wants his son to go feminine.

At the rate we’re moving in a couple of years you won’t be able to tell the difference between boys and girls. Sound extreme? Think about this. In every movie where advanced time-traveling beings come to our planet there’s one constant: You can’t tell the male aliens from the female aliens!

But that’s the future. Kids today are soft and fat. People ask why. Is it junk food? No. Junk food has been around for fifty years. Is it video games? No. Video games have been around for thirty years. None of the kids playing them back in the day were terribly obese. We’re all scratching our heads trying to figure out what we’ve introduced to society to ruin our kids. But it’s not anything we’ve added that has ruined our kids. It’s stuff we’ve gotten rid of.

Take the gym rope for example. Remember that thing that stretched from the floor to the ceiling in your gym class that you could never climb? Most of the kids couldn’t make it to the top. But that wasn’t the point; the point was you had to try while some middle-aged guy who couldn’t make it up a flight of stairs shouted at you. We should have put our son on that rope, and given him a head start, but we didn’t want to shame the boy, so we took it down.

Taking down the rope would be a good idea if there were no ropes in life. But they’re everywhere. You just can’t see them. They’re in every goal unrealized and expectation not met. The point everyone missed about the rope is you weren’t supposed to make it to the top. It was there to create a fire that burned in the oversized belly of every kid.

1.What is the example of aliens used to show?

A.Girls are growing like boys. B.Boys are going feminine.

C.There are really time-traveling beings. D.Alien movies are popular with children.

2.What causes kids today to be soft and fat?

A.Junk food. B.Video games.

C.Stuff introduced to society. D.Things removed from society.

3.How does the author find teenagers today?

A.They have too much dignity. B.They are overprotected.

C.They are less independent. D.They are thought too highly of.

4.What does the rope probably symbolize?

A.Goals. B.Expectations.

C.Competition. D.Assistance.

I’m a student in my third year at Robert Gordon University, but I also work 35 hours a week at Sainsbury’s to make ends meet.

I constantly have to force myself to stay awake, and to be alert, whatever it takes. The work I do at Sainsbury’s is very physical like stacking shelves. I am lucky because the amount I lift at work is nothing compared with the weight I lift in the gym. I know I have the strength to bear it.

I am originally from Nigeria. I came here when I was seven. Money was always tight. My parents gave me everything I needed, but there was no money for luxuries. I worked hard at school though and, with the help of professors, I got the best A-level grades in my class.

Unfortunately, though I had applied for “settled” British residential status the Home Office waited until I was in sixth form to approve my application. That meant I was not eligible for a student loan. The only way I could afford to go to university was that I got a job that would pay for all my living costs and my parents paid for my tuition fees.

I don’t have much time to socialize because of my job. Ideally, Id like to have more time to study so I can excel at my course. Yes, I have a lot on my plate, but working hard isnt new for me. Growing up, my parents cultivated in me the importance of working hard for what I want in life.

My dream is to get a job in the NHS. But now, Im just focused on trying to get the best grades I can. Whenever I find life hard, I tell myself this is about my future.

1.Why does the author work long hours and sometimes overtime every week?

A.To pay for his own living expenses B.To pay for his tuition fees

C.To prove his ability to earn money D.To help his parents pay off the debts

2.What does the underlined word “eligible” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Responsible. B.Anxious.

C.Qualified. D.Accessible.

3.Which of the following can NOT be used to describe the author?

A.Persistent. B.Diligent.

C.Sociable. D.Ambitious.

4.Which proverb can best summarize the passage?

A.Actions speak louder than words. B.God help those who help themselves.

C.A penny saved is a penny earned. D.Where there is life, there is hope.

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are not just beautiful to look at, but also very useful. They shelter nearly 25 of ocean life and provide food for billions of people. However, like many other species, this amazing ecosystem (生态系统) is in danger of dying out!

There are two main reasons for the destruction — the rising carbon dioxide levels caused by global warming as well as human influences like bottom operation. While not much can be done about the former, the loss caused by the latter can be reduced.

Bottom operation involves dropping nets to the ocean bed and then dragging them up when filled with fish. This action damaged the ocean floor, causing the coral branches to separate from the reefs. While that is very discouraging, the good news is that if these branches are found quickly, they can be saved. At present, that work is being performed by volunteer divers. But the method has only limited success because they cannot stay long underwater, nor reach depths of over 200 meters where some of the deep-sea coral grows.

However, this is not the case for Coralbots — the robots that can constantly seek out broken branches. A team of “coralbots”, each individually working to simple rules will piece together damaged bits of coral, allowing them to regrow. They are programmed to be able to distinguish between other things and the coral. The robots work together in groups, similar to bees. If one coral bot is damaged, then the others will still be able to complete the task.

Dr Lea-Anne Henry said: “The project of using coralbots offers us the possibility to restore (修复) the function of reefs. It is in the final stage of testing. Once ready, the researchers hope to build hundreds of them and use them effectively in the waters off Scotland and then hopefully in the oceans across the world.”

1.Which of the following is a cause of the danger that coral reefs are facing?

A.The appearance of new creatures.

B.The seriously polluted sea water.

C.The activities of volunteer divers.

D.Human activities like bottom operation.

2.Compared with volunteer divers, coralbots ________.

A.can stay longer underwater

B.must work as bees do

C.can distinguish what is coral

D.can never be damaged

3.What does the underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Coralbots. B.Broken branches.

C.Working bees. D.Bits of coral.

4.We can infer from the passage that ________.

A.bottom operation has affected most underwater creatures

B.broken branches of coral can regrow if saved in time

C.hundreds of the coralbots have worked well in the oceans

D.with the coralbots all damaged coral reefs can be restored

When I spent the last summer with my Grandmother in Warwick, N.Y., she sent me down to the grocery store with a long shopping list. Staring at all the items on the list, I wondered how I could find anything on the packed shelves around me. But she insisted.

I walked up to the counter. Behind it was a lady like no one I’d ever seen. Thick glasses rested on the tip of her nose, gray hair was piled on her head.

“Excuse me,” I said. She looked up.

“You’re that Clements kid,” she said. “I’m Miss Bee. Come closer and let me get a look at you.” She pushed her glasses up her nose. “I want to be able to describe you to the policeman if something goes missing from the store.”

“I’m not a thief!” I was shocked. I was too young to be a thief!

“Maybe not, but I can tell you’ve got potential.” She went back to reading her newspaper.

“I need to get these.” I said, holding up my list.

“So? Go get them.” She ignored my need of a favor, “There’s no one here except you and me and I’m not your servant, so I suggest you start looking for the things on that list.”

The store was a puzzle to a seven-year-old, and it seemed to hold all the goods in the world. I complained about this task Grandma had set me to do while trying to find all the items on my list. It took me one and half an hour to do it, and the mean lady behind the counter didn’t even bother to look at me once.

I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Sometimes she sold me an old newspaper instead of one that was the latest. Sometimes she overcharged me and didn’t seem embarrassed when I pointed it out. Going to the store was more like going into battle, but I survived. By summer’s end the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I stopped in to get a soda.

Para. 1:

“All right, Miss Potential, what did you learn this summer?” she said.

In a major medical breakthrough, Tel Aviv University researchers have “printed” the world's first 3D vascularized (有血管的)engineered heart using a patient’s own cells and biological materials. Their findings were published on April IS in a study in Advanced Science.

“This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart,” says Prof. Tal Dvir of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, who led the research for the study. “This heart is made from human cells and patient-specific biological materials. In our process, these materials serve as the bioinks, something made of sugars and proteins that can be used for 3D printing of complex tissue models” Prof, Dvir says. “People managed to 3D print the structure of a heart in the past, but not with cells or with blood vessels (血管).Our results demonstrate the potential of our approach for engineering personalized tissue and organ replacement in the future.”

According to Prof. Dvirthe use of “ native ” patient-specific materials is important to successfully engineering tissues and organs.

The researchers are now planning on culturing the printed hearts in the lab and “ teaching them to behave” like hearts, Prof. Dvir says. They then plan to transplant the 3D-printed heart in animal models.

“We need to develop the printed heart further” he concludes. “The cells need to form a pumping ability they can currently contract (收缩),but we need them to work together. Our hope is that we will succeed and prove our method’s efficacy (功效)and usefulness. “Maybe, in ten years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the worldand these procedures will be conducted routinely. ”

1.What does Prof. Dvir think of an early 3D-printed heart?

A.It was highly practical. B.It was too expensive.

C.It was personalized. D.It was too simple.

2.What do we know about the latest 3D-printed heart?

A.It can be cultured in the lab.

B.It can match a patient perfectly.

C.It has been transplanted in animals.

D.It has been widely used in hospitals,

3.What is Prof, Dvir's attitude to the development of the printed heart?

A.Ambiguous. B.Positive.

C.Disapproving. D.Cautious.

4.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To explain the basic principle of 3D technology.

B.To introduce a breakthrough of medical research.

C.To doubt the medical value of a new invention.

D.To prove the effectiveness of the new technology.

There are billions of people on this planet, and many of us love to eat meat. Can the demand be filled in a sustainable(可持续的) and affordable way? A bunch of businessmen are not only optimistic but are working to make this happen sooner than you may think.

The environmental effects caused by meat consumption (食用)—waste, animal treatment, health problems and even the greenhouse gas effects that are potentially caused by methane gas produced by cows—have given rise to a number of startups(新兴公司)looking to develop meats in different ways.

For example, San Francisco-based Memphis Meats is developing cell-based meats in its labs without requiring any animals. Israel’s Future Meat Technologies is doing the same by producing fat and muscle cells that are being tested by chefs in Jerusalem. All of these companies use special processes to harvest cells from animals and grow them in a lab.

But don’t worry if you’re not a meat lover. Startups such as Jet Eat, which is also based in Israel, are working on food products grown in labs that are plant-based and replicate (复制) meats using natural elements while still keeping flavor, consistency and the “overall sensory experience”, according to a report on NoCamels. Jet Eat, which was founded in early 2018, aims to 3D-print their lab-grown products by 2020.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of barriers facing the industry. Educating the public is a big one. Another controversial issue is the labeling of the products.  Recently both the USDA and the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) announced that they will begin jointly controlling the new “cell-based meat” category.

Many of us have concerns about the challenges facing future generations as our global population increases and the earth’s natural resources decreases. The good news is that there are plenty of businessmen around the world—like those producing lab-grown meats—who are working to solve some of these problems and make a little money in the process. Nothing wrong with that.

1.Why do some companies begin to develop new kinds of meats?

A.To analyse the causes of air pollution.

B.To stress the importance of protecting wild animals.

C.To make people less interested in eating meat and more healthy.

D.To meet people’s demand for meat in environmentally friendly ways.

2.What’s special about the lab-grown meats of Jet Eat?

A.They cost less. B.They are plant-based.

C.They are more delicious. D.They are available on the market now.

3.Which of the following is a barrier lab-grown meat industries must deal with?

A.How to let people accept the meat. B.How to give the meat an elegant name.

C.How to produce the meat in large amounts. D.How to reduce the cost of making the meat.

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards lab-grown meats?

A.Supportive. B.Opposing. C.Ambiguous. D.Cautious.

A 2018 report found that food waste would increase by a third to 2. 1billion tons by 2030. Beyond the cost of the waste itselfthrown-away food generates a gas that contributes to climate change.

Home delivery meal kits()can reduce food waste by more than two-thirdsbut suppliers need to switch to reusable packaging to make them environmentally friendly.

Tailor-made meal kits cut waste by providing people with precise amounts of fresh ingredients(烹饪原料)for chosen recipesmeaning leftovers are minimized. But while the  delivery services score well on reducing food wastebuying the same food ingredients from the supermarket almost always saves energy overall simply because meal kits use so much single-use packaging. The good news is that if people have meals that are tailored for consumptionthey won’t overbuy and have less food waste. They fine-tune the amount of food to what they will actually eat.

Meal kits can reduce transport emissions(排放)if people go to the supermarket less  frequently. If people only go and buy such goods as soap and toilet paperthey may only have to visit once every couple of months. A delivery truck can carry meals for a lot of people in the neighborhood. So dozens of car trips might be replaced with one truck trip.

Howeverstudy found that even if delivery meal kits reduced food waste to zerothey would still use up more energy overall than buying the same food from the supermarket unless the energy used for the meal kit packaging was cut by a fifth. The packaging is a killer if it’s single-use and thrown awaywhich can make all the environmental benefits lost. But if the packaging can be reusedif it’s glass bottleslike in the old dayswe can get some benefits.

1.What can we learn about home delivery meal kits?

A.They can cut down on daily expenses.

B.They will totally solve the problem of food waste.

C.They can keep energy consumption to a minimum.

D.They will benefit the environment with reusable packaging.

2.What does the underlined word“fine-tune”in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Attach. B.Adjust.

C.Raise. D.Compare.

3.The author suggests carrying meals with a delivery truck to__________.

A.reduce transport emissions B.save more food

C.shop only in the supermarket D.shorten car trip distances

4.What’s the author’s attitude to meal kits?

A.Supportive. B.Unfavorable.

C.Objective. D.Indifferent.

When a tornado touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.

“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.”

I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor, encouraging the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods that they no longer needed.

Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much -loved doll, hugged tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.

“Oh, Honey,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”

Meghan nodded seriously, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”

Para. 1

The boys had watched, open-mouthed, when their sister placed her favorite doll in the box.

If you are thinking about redecorating the home, you are probably searching about interior (室内的) decoration ideas. Redecorating presents a great chance to reflect your personality by displaying your style and interests. It will be easy to redecorate the home if money is not a restriction. 1.Here are some tips on how to do so:

Search some magazines. You can get dozens of home interior decoration ideas from countless magazines and TV programs. Some programs tend to show less costly interior decoration ideas.2.It's a good way of comparing different styles. Here you can make distinction between broad styles, country, contemporary, etc.

Fond of primitive style. If you are fond of primitive or traditional style, warmer colors are the best for the room. These colors go with all kinds of cloth of old style and wooden furniture.3.

5. This often occurs anyway, especially if the people give you furniture or you inherit (继承 )the same. If you wish to combine different pieces of furniture from different styles, you need to bridge a gap between them. This Call be done easily with materials like throw pillows, wall hangings and carpets.

A. A white one on a black sofa suits here.

B. There is nothing wrong in mixing two styles.

C. Another effective and affordable option is by surfing the internet.

D. The combinations and possibilities in the first decoration are endless.

E. Autumn colors go well to produce warm, friendly and pleasant atmosphere.

F. Nevertheless, the question for most is how to redecorate the home within limited budget.

G. The walls tend to have one or two pieces of wall art rather than 6 to 10 of the older time.

Wood has many great characteristics that make it the perfect building material. It is cheap, durable(耐用的), easily available, and most importantly, environmentally sustainable. The one thing it is not, is transparent(透明的).Now thanks to a team of scientists at Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the material may even be able to add that feature to its already impressive list.

Lead researcher Dr. Lars Berglund said he was inspired to create the transparent wood after learning how Japanese researchers had developed a see-through paper for use in flexible display screens for electronic devices.

The team began by pulling out the wood’s lignin (木质素). The lignin-free wood was then dipped into a polymer (聚合物) and baked at a temperature of 158F for four hours. The result was a hybrid product that was not only stronger and lighter than the original wood but also, almost transparent. The researchers were able to adjust the level of transparency by varying the amount of the polymer injected and also by changing the thickness of the wood.

While scientists have previously created a see-through wood for small-scale applications like computer chips, the transparent wood is the first one being considered for large scale applications. The researchers, who revealed their findings in Biomacromolecules on April 11, picture using the transparent wood in buildings to allow for more natural light, or to create windows that let in the desired amount of light without sacrificing privacy.

Wood that allows light to pass through could lead to a brighter future for homes and buildings. Berglund also thinks the wood could play a significant role in the design of solar panels. The semi-transparent material would be able to keep light longer and give it more time to interact with the conductor, thus resulting in better solar efficiency.

Additionally, substituting the currently used glass with this new product would help solar energy manufacturers improve their carbon footprint and lower the cost. They are now experimenting with ways to scale up the manufacturing process so that the transparent material is cost-effective to make and easy to use.

1.What does the underlined part "that feature" in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.Cheapness. B.Durability.

C.Sustainability. D.Transparency.

2.Which of the following is not the process in which the transparent wood is made?

A.Dip the wood into a polymer. B.Reduce the amount of the polymer.

C.Make the wood lignin-free. D.Bake the wood for some time.

3.What’s the purpose of using the transparent wood in buildings?

A.To protect privacy. B.To scale out applications.

C.To get more natural light. D.To observe more clearly.

4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The bright future of the transparent wood.

B.The wood’s role in the design of solar panels.

C.The disadvantages of the currently used glass.

D.Solar energy manufacturers’ carbon footprint.

With self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots for the final leg of the delivery process, from the store or local distribution center to the customer. The latest to join the trend is e-commerce giant Amazon. Following a successful eight — month test run in Snohomish County, Washington, the company's Scout robots have been making the rounds of Irvine, California, since August 6, 2019.

The six-wheeled Scout is about the size of a large cooler with the capacity to carry small or medium-sized

packages. The battery-powered vehicle, which moves at a regular walking pace, has been programmed to avoid pedestrians, animals, and unexpected obstacles, such as garbage cans. Its powerful sensors can also detect the movement of a car backing out of a driveway.

To accelerate Scout's development and bring it nationwide sooner, the company has created several detailed virtual maps of American suburbs and conducted trial deliveries to homes there.

Though Amazon has not shown how Scout ensures the delivery is picked up by the right person, it most likely requires the customer to apply a unique code, texted to them prior to the delivery, to unlock the store box. Also unclear is the number of deliveries Scout can complete before its battery needs to be recharged. Though the initial tests are being conducted with a human for company, the robot will be autonomous in the future. Its location, however, will be tracked at all times ——if someone attempts to steal Scout, Amazon employees will be instantly sensed.

However, the eco-friendly robots are unable to climb stairs or open gates, which means that they can only reach consumers who live on the ground level. Additionally, the robots are unable to leave packages at the front door if the customers are not home. Whether these problems get resolved remains to be seen. For now, it appears that humans will still be needed to achieve the ever-growing demand for home and office deliveries.

1.What are many companies developing autonomous robots for?

A.Final tests. B.The so-called last mile.

C.Robots' safety. D.Delivery speed.

2.What can we infer about Scout from paragraph 2?

A.It looks like a cooler. B.It adjusts its speed accordingly.

C.Its sensors play a key role. D.It will be widely used soon.

3.What does the underlined phrase “prior to" in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Before. B.After.

C.In front of. D.Due to.

4.From which is the text probably taken?

A.A biology textbook. B.A health magazine.

C.A newspaper. D.A travel brochure.

It can be a real struggle trying to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easiIy, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.

At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, lout then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK.1 managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of your chosen children’s book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.

1.Why was the author advised to read children’s books?

A.Because she was weak in reading great works.

B.Because she was slow to learn language.

C.Because she liked children's literature.

D.Because she couldn't remember any words.

2.What can kids get from childrens' books according to the passage?

A.Vocabulary and listening skills.

B.Learning methods.

C.Words and structures.

D.Designing skills.

3.What causes the author feel surprised while reading childrens’ books?

A.Grasping the context from the pictures.

B.Looking up the definations of words from a dictionary.

C.Getting familiar with the plots of the story.

D.Understanding the words simply from the context.

4.What can be the best title of the passage?

A.Reading Children's Books

B.The Way of Learning Languages

C.The Method of Using Dictionary

D.My Good Reading Habits

With over 2.4 millon visitors every yearCinque Terre is one of the most-visited regions in Italy. Cinque Terre is truly special. Take a scenic hike.

It's easy to visit each of the attractive villages on foot. The most popular hike is the coastal path Sentiero Azzuro. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

This incident happened over two decades ago when I was in high school. There was a debate competition in my neighboring school and my friend and I volunteered to participate in the debate. There were many topics to choose from and I choose to speak on AIDS. This topic was almost a forbidden topic in those days as people were shy to talk about it. Even though I had no idea what the competition would be like, I decided to go ahead and prepare for it, using an article from a magazine as reference.

Every speaker had about five minutes on the stage and they were to be judged by a team of teachers from different schools. On the day before the event, I practiced my lines but was feeling tensed as there would be a huge audience and the stage fright had chased me already and truly it caught up with me.

I reached the lecture room; it was huge. The competition began, and I was getting sweaty palms. My preparations were in vain when the speaker before my turn coincidentally(巧合地) had chosen the same topic as me and also referred to the same magazine and reproduced it line by line, leaving me in a daze(发呆) on what to do next as I just had a couple of minutes with me. Soon I was on the stage and I could gather courage and speak for only two minutes. I felt so bad, not only letting my school down but also myself. I could not forgive myself. Then I decided to put my best effort into it and overcome my stage fright and prepare well for the next debate and luckily I did not have to wait long as the next competition was organized by my school. This time my topic was discrimination against women in Indian society. I wrote the script with my own efforts and practiced for hours in front of the mirror because I had to learn the lines by heart, with a pause, stress and making eye contact wherever required.
