When Wilbur and Orville Wright finished their flight at Kitty Hawk, Americans celebrated the brotherly bond. The brothers had grown up playing together, they had been in the newspaper business together, and they had built an airplane together. They even said they "thought together." However, when the Wright brothers said they thought together, what they really meant is that they argued together. After long arguments we often found ourselves in the position of each having been pulled to the other's side,"

Orville reflected. I don't think they really got mad," their mechanic (机械师) remembered, but they sure got awfully hot."

The skill to get hot without getting mad is critical in life. But it’s one that few parents teach to their kids. We want to give kids a stable home, so we ѕtор ѕіblіngѕ (兄弟姐妹) from quаrrеlіng and we have our own arguments behind closed doors. Yet if kids never get exposed to disagreement, we’ll end up limiting their creativity. As the psychologist Robert Albert put it, the creative person-to-be comes from a family that is anything but harmonious, one with a “wobble (摇晃).”Orville Wright came from a wobbly family. The brothers often watched their father Milton Wright fight with school authorities who weren't fond of his decision to let his kids miss a half-day of school from time to time to learn on their own.

The Wright brothers weren't t alone. The Beatles fought over instruments and tunes. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak argued constantly while designing the first Apple computer. Brainstorming groups generate16 percent more ideas when the members are encouraged to criticize one another. The most creative ideas in Chinese technology companies come from teams that have real disagreement early on.

Children need to learn the value of thoughtful disagreement. We should teach kids that silence is bad manners. It disrespects the value of your own view point and your own voice. It's a sign of respect to care enough about someone's opinion that you’re willing to challenge it. Good arguments are wobbly: a team or family might rock back and forth but it never tips over. If kids don't learn to wobble, they never learn to walk; they end up standing still.

Have you ever made a mistake while trying to print from a computer? That paper probably went right into the recycling bin. From there, it is taken to a waste-handling plant to be eventually broken down and remade. But what if you could simply erase your mistake and reuse that paper? It may become available, thanks to a new technology.

It's a new type of rewritable paper that can be used more than 100 times. Words and pictures remain visible on it for at least half a year. This is nearly the first rewritable paper. But the marks on those earlier versions tended to fade away in less than three months.

Luzhuo Chen led the group that made the new rewritable paper. His team was inspired by pens that contain erasable ink. That ink disappears when heated. To make its new rewritable paper, Chen's group switched the ink from the pen to the paper. They covered one side of regular paper with the ink used in those erasable pens. Using a heated pen or printer, they can now write or print on this paper. That warmth makes the ink disappear.

This is the opposite of how writing usually works, where ink is applied to paper. With the new system, the spots where you write become white instead of colored because that heat makes the ink covering the white paper disappear.

Qiang Zhao has a creative mind behind another type of rewritable paper. He thinks Chen's paper is simple and doesn't cost much to make, so it should be easy and fairly inexpensive to produce. However, the paper will need a lot of ink. In large doses(剂量),chemicals in the ink can be bad for the environment and people's health. Zhao would like scientists to develop a safer ink. Still, he thinks this paper will have wide applications.

1.Why does the author raise the questions in the first paragraph?

A.To prove the necessity of recycling paper.

B.To introduce the importance of rewritable paper.

C.To draw readers attention to the new technology.

D.To show the development of paper-making technology.

2.What's the advantage of the new rewritable paper over earlier versions?

A.It can be reused for a lot more times.

B.The costs of producing it are much lower.

C.It can be produced in a much easier way.

D.The contents on it can be more long-lasting.

3.Which of the following reflects Qiang Zhao's opinion on Chen's paper?

A.It still needs improving. B.It's somewhat impractical.

C.It does no harm to its users. D.It's worth promoting right away.

4.What can we know about Luzhuo Chen's new paper from the text?

A.It shows colored words or pictures.

B.It doesn't require ink to write on it.

C.It will replace ordinary writing paper soon.

D.It has no requirement on the writing tool.

2018 Human Development Report

HDI: Human Development Index(人类发展指数)

[1] Looking back over almost three decades (十年), human beings have made impressive progress. Across the world, people are living longer, are more educated and have greater living chances. The average lifespan(寿命) is seven years longer than it was in 1990, and more than 130 countries have improved their primary education.

[2] Although HDI values are rising, the rising rates differ greatly. South Asia was the fastest growing region over 1990–2017, at 45.3 percent, followed by East Asia and the Pacific at 41.8 percent. And the OECD(经济合作与发展组织) countries grew 14.0 percent. It shows gaps(差距) across regions are hopefully to be reduced.

[3] But HDI growth has also slowed in all regions, particularly in the last decade. Part of the reason lies in the 2008–2009 global food, financial and economic problems. But part is simply that as human progress advances, slower HDI growth is unavoidable. As more countries reach the upper limits of HDI, measures of the quality of human development become more central.

[4] Progress since 1990 has not always been steady(稳定的). Some countries suffered great losses or even setbacks due to wars, diseases or economic problems. For example, many countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia saw their HDI values fall in the 1990s due to the fall of the Soviet Union(前苏联). Although faced with these challenges, countries in these regions recovered their losses and grew over the last two decades.

[5] In sum, there have been great advances in human development over the past few decades, especially in low human development countries since 1990. But some countries have suffered serious setbacks—sometimes paying the price of the gains of several decades. And the gaps in human development across countries, while narrowing, remain huge.

1.What’s the present situation of people according to 2018 Human Development Report?

2.The fact of different rising HDI rates gives us hope to ______.

3.Compared with the HDI growth, what is more important?

4.How do wars, diseases or economic problems affect human development?

5.Which paragraph is the topic paragraph?

Along the Ring of Fire

Off the coast of Alaska, the lava rises through cracks (裂缝) at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. It flows like toothpaste pressed from a tube. Spreading and erupting, the earth slowly builds a new island.

Along the Pacific coast of South America, one part of the earth’s surface gradually moves toward another. Although difficult to believe, the rocky outer surface of Earth is not solid; rather, it is broken up into huge pieces called plates(板块). 1., the action can sometimes lead to volcanic activity.

These things take place thousands of miles apart, yet they are connected. Surrounding the Pacific Ocean is a circle of volcanoes that includes more than half of the world’s active volcanoes.2..

The Ring of Fire spreads from the west coast of South America northward to Alaska. It goes left at the Aleutian Islands and crosses the Pacific Ocean. Then it heads down the east coast of Asia toward New Zealand.

3.. In 1883 Krakatoa erupted four times. The third eruption was so loud that it could be clearly heard 3,000 miles away. Krakatoa threw a large dust cloud nearly 50 miles into the air. 4.. During four days in June, Pinatubo threw out more than 20 million tons of broken pieces into the air, destroying many homes.

Some volcanoes erupt more quietly, with lava flowing through the cracks in Earth’s surface. This type of volcano is found in Hawaii. 5..

A.This area is called the Ring of Fire

B.Although the plates are connected

C.As the plates move past one another

D.The Ring of Fire is also where most earthquakes happen

E.Major volcanic eruptions along the Ring of Fire make history

F.In 1991 Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted after 600 quiet years

G.Lava from a volcano tends to advance slowly but still causes great damage

From driving to landing on moon, more and more human tasks are being taken over by artificial intelligence(AI-人工智能). It will make everyday tasks easier and bring benefits to different industries.

And yet, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks and dangers. When people mention that AI could be dangerous, they think of the situation in films where an AI program decides to kill or enslave all humans. While this possibility is unlikely for now, there are many other dangers that AI could bring to mankind.

In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the possible misuse of AI. What they found was that “Every AI advance by the good guys is an advance for the bad guys, too”. Their main worry was that criminals could use AI for many bad purposes, including using AI to create websites that could steal people’s personal information. Another possible risk was faster hacking(黑客)—AI programs could be taught to find weaknesses in software and break into computer systems. Some other risks were as dramatic as the ones we see in books and movies. For example, long-distant attacks could be made easier through the use of AI. And, finally, there were some worries on imitating voices as well. It is possible that AI could be used to make false photos and videos. In china, tech giant Baidu has developed a program called Deep Voice that can “clone” anyone’s voice by studying a 3.7-second audio sample (声音样本).

Many people in the tech world have expressed worry about AI. People like US businessmen Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly controlled, as there are few laws currently governing the use of AI. Famous British Physicist Stephen Hawking even thought AI could finally cause the end of mankind. “Once humans develop artificial intelligence, it will take off and redesign itself at an alarming rate. Humans…couldn’t compete and would be replaced.”

Over the last two decades (十年), the Earth has seen an increase in vegetation (植被) and China and India are leading the increase in greening on land. The result comes mostly from tree planting programs in China and intensive agriculture(集约农业) in both countries.

Researchers from Boston University found that global green area has increased by 5% since the early 2000s, an area equal to the size of Amazon rainforest. Among the increased area, China and India contribute to about 33%, especially China, with 25% itself. China’s great contribution came mostly from its programs to protect and expand forests, which is about 42%. These programs were developed in an effort to reduce the effect of desertification, air pollution and climate change.

Another 32% of the greening change in China, and 82% in India, resulted from intensive agriculture of food crops. The land area used to grow crops in China and India has not changed much since the early 2000s. Yet both countries have greatly increased the total green area and food production in order to feed large populations. The lead author Chi Chen of Boston University said,

“That is a surprising finding, since it is generally believed that land degradation(退化) in populous countries is usually more serious.”

Rama Nemani, a research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, saw a positive message in the new findings. “Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to fix it,” However, the researchers rang bells as well. They pointed out that the gain did not necessarily fill up the loss of natural vegetation in tropical regions like Brazil and Indonesia.

Reducing air pollution.

Increasing rich land for crops.

Helping with climate control.

Controlling the desertification.

A.①②③ B.①③④

C.①②④ D.②③④

4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Brazil and Indonesia do not protect their forests.

B.The findings discouraged belief of a green world.

C.Humans are creative enough to solve all problems.

D.More efforts are needed to protect natural vegetation.

5.Where does the text probably come from?

A.A newspaper. B.A travel brochure.

C.An interview. D.A geography textbook.

Being home to the largest secondhand bookstore in the world, Hay-on-Wye is more than just a small town in Wales--it’s a book heaven on earth.

The history of Hay-on-Wye as the “town of books” began on the April Fool’s Day of 1977. A man called Richard Booth announced the independence of Hay-on-Wye as a kingdom of books, with him as the king. Since then, he has managed to build a healthy tourism industry based on books. Today thousands of visitors come to Hay-on-Wye every year to look for whatever books they need.

Before Booth’s great idea, Hay-on-Wye was a slowly dying town having less than 2,000 people, with no real economy or notable local businesses. The king of Hay-on-Wye opened his first bookstore in 1961, and later encouraged his friends in the trade to come to Hay. After a few years, he filled almost every building with books. Hay-on-Wye now has over thirty bookshops, many selling second-hand books, which has made the town attractive for book collectors.

Hay-on-Wye has its special honor with over one million books traded here every year. Unlike other book dealers, Richard Booth doesn’t center on any one topic. He buys any type of books believing that every book is valuable and someone in the world wants it. Book lovers from all over the world come to Hay-on-Wye because a large number of books found here are at low prices.

Since 1988, Hay-on-Wye has also been the place for a famous literary(文学) festival, now supported by The Guardian, which draws about 80,000 visitors over ten days at the beginning of June to see and hear big literary names from all over the world.

Once a dying small town, Hay-on-Wye is now an attractive tourist town, with ten percent of its population working in the book business, and local businesses benefiting from the waves of tourists coming here in search of books.

When being asked about this question, a large number of people which are interested in the topic hold the view that it’s beneficial to clone humans. Therefore, some other people, me including, are against this idea. Cloning humans can bring negative effects and wrong informations. ExperiencedBased Education

Everyone is familiar with traditional education. You sit in a class and a teacher teaches.  This is an important part of development. But at some point, every individual has to take charge of their own education. To do this, one must look at the root of learning.1.

Basically, unfamiliar experiences usually add more value than experiences that are familiar.

2. And we are in a better state to learn something new. Honestly, someone who never experiences the same thing twice will never have a chance to benefit from anything learned. However, new experiences are generally what make people interesting and push them to grow.

High school is a new experience. College is a new experience. However, at some point traditional education becomes repetitive. It is not that you won’t learn anything else, but that the environment is so familiar.3.

To solve this, an individual needs to introduce new experiences into their life. You may spend a summer in a different part of the country or learn a new language through trial and error. You can also go to a drivein movieor some other entertainment event that is new to you.4.

These types of experiences often result in very little“book knowledge”.  Instead, they will often provide you with a better understanding of yourself as you experience your reaction to different situations.5. It can be invaluable for you to work effectively with others. Becoming a well rounded human isn’t something that happens by accident. You can spend your entire lifetime developing your potential.

A. Has education changed so much in the last decade?

B. They will also provide you with a better understanding of others.

C. Those new experiences may not lead to great personal development.

D. These are all things that can stretch and expand your experience in life.

E. This is because unfamiliar experiences require much more of our attention.

F. As a result, you can easily become less aware of your experience and not learn as much.

G. What makes some experiences add great value to our lives while other experiences do not?

Work Your Mind

Here’s something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: struggling with schoolwork on your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you struggle while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.

This theory might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning. “Don't be too quick to get help when learning something new,” education expert Manu Kapur told TFK. “Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.”

Kapur came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher’s help. In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher.

With the teacher’s help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas. The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process, not just the solution.

Kapur’s advice for kids is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than going to your teacher for help. “Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won’t work,” says Kapur. “The struggle needs to be a genuine attempt to figure out or solve a problem in as many ways as possible.”

1.When you have doubt on schoolwork, you’d better ____________.

A.ask your teacher for help

B.make it clear by yourself

C.ask your classmates to help you

D.ask your parents for help

2.What’s Manu Kapur educational idea on learning new knowledge?

A.Give students much help as soon as possible.

B.Let students learn it on themselves in one way.

C.Let students learn it by themselves in the same way.

D.Let students learn it for themselves in different ways.

3.How did Kapur check his idea on better learning?

A.By asking questions.

B.By solving art problems.

C.By group comparations.

D.By solving science problems.

4.What is the most important in learning knowledge?

A.Getting the teacher’s help.

B.Getting the student’s help.

C.Grasping the learning course.

D.Receiving the final solution.

While many of us may have been away somewhere nice last summer, few would say that we’ve “summered.” “Summer” is clearly a noun, more precisely, a verbed noun.

Way back in our childhood, we all learned the difference between a noun and a verb. With such a tidy definition, it was easy to spot the difference. Not so in adulthood, where we are expected to “foot” bills, “chair” committees, and “dialogue” with political opponents. Chances are you didn’t feel uncomfortable about the sight of those verbed nouns.

“The verbing of nouns is as old as the English language,” says Patricia O’Conner, a former editor at The New York Times Book Review. Experts estimate that 20 percent of all English verbs were originally nouns. And the phenomenon seems to be snowballing. Since 1900, about 40 percent of all new verbs have come from nouns.

Even though conversion (转化) is quite universal, plenty of grammarians object to the practice. William Strunk Jr. and E.B.White, in The Elements of Style — the Bible for the use of American English — have this to say: “Many nouns lately have been pressed into service as verbs. Not all are bad, but all are suspect.” The Chicago Manual of Style takes a similar standpoint, advising writers to use verbs with great care.

“Sometimes people object to a new verb because they resist what is unfamiliar to them,” says O’Conner. That’s why we’re comfortable “hosting” a party, but we might feel upset by the thought of “medaling” in sports. So are there any rules for verbing? Benjamin Dreyer, copy chief at Random House, doesn’t offer a rule, but suggests that people think twice about “verbifying” a noun if it’s easily replaceable by an already existing popular verb. Make sure it’s descriptive but not silly-sounding, he says.

In the end, however, style is subjective. Easy conversion of nouns to verbs has been part of English grammar for centuries; it is one of the processes that make English “English.” Not every coinage (新创的词语) passes into general use, but as for trying to end verbing altogether, forget it.

1.What can we learn about the verbing of nouns?

A.It hasn’t recently been opposed by many grammarians.

B.It is more commonly accepted by children than adults.

C.It hasn’t been a rare phenomenon in the past century.

D.It is easily replaced by existing verbs in practice

2.What is most leading experts’ attitude towards the practice of the verbing of nouns?

A.Cautious. B.Satisfied.

C.Disappointed. D.Unconcerned.

3.What does the author think of ending the verbing of nouns?

A.Predictable. B.Practicable.

C.Approaching. D.Impossible.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Are 40 Percent of all new verbs from nouns

B.Are Summering and Medaling Annoying?

C.Are You Comfortable about a New Verb?

D.Are There Any Rules for Verbing?

In the atmosphere carbon dioxide acts rather like a one-way mirror the glass in the roof of a greenhouse which allows the sun's rays to enter but prevents the heat from escaping.

According to a weather expert's prediction the atmosphere wilbe3C warmer in the year 2050thanitis today if man continues to burn fuels at the present rate.If this warming up took place the icecaps in the poles would begin to melt thus raising sea level several meters and severely flooding coastal cities. Also the increase in atmospheric temperature would lead to great changes in the climate of the northern hemisphere(半球) possibly resulting in an alteration of the earth's chief food-growing zones.

In the past concern about a man-made warming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic is much colder and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather experts are now paying more attention to West Antarctic which maybe affected by only a few degrees of warmingin other words by a warming on the scale that will possibly take place in the next fifty years from the burning of fuels.

Satellite pictures show that large areas of Antarctic ice are already disappearing. The evidence available suggests that a warming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms the earth.

However most of the fuel is burnt in the northern hemisphere where temperatures seem to be falling Scientists concludethereforethat up to now natural influences on the weather have exceeded those caused by man.The question isWhich natural cause has most effect on the weather?

One possibility is the variable behavior of the sun.Astronomers at one research station have studied the hot spots and“cold”spots(that is the relatively less hot spots) on the sun.As the sun rotates(旋转) every 27.5 days it presents hotter or“colder”faces to the earth and different aspects to different parts of the earth. This seems to have a considerable effect on the distribution of the earth's atmospheric pressure and consequently on wind circulation. The sun is also variable over along termits heat output goes up and down in cycles the latest trend being downward.

Scientists are now finding mutual relations between models of solar-weather interactions and the actual climate over many thousands of years including the last Ice Age.The problem is that the models are predicting that the world should be entering a new Ice Age and it is not.One way of solving this theoretical difficulty is to assume a delay of thousands of years while the solar effects overcome the inertia(惯性) of the earth's climate. If this is rightthe warming effect of carbon dioxide might thus be serving as a useful counter-balance to the sun's diminishing(减少) heat.

1.Why is the fuel consumption greater in then or them hemisphere but temperatures there seem to be falling?

A.Mainly because the levels of carbon dioxide are rising.

B.Possibly because the output of solar energy varies.

C.Because the inertia of the earth's climate take effect.

D.Possibly because the icecaps in the poles are melting

2.On the basis of their models scientists are of the opinion that

A.the climate of the world should be becoming cooler

B.the new Ice Age will be delayed by the greenhouse effect

C.the man-made warming effect helps to increase the solar effects

D.it will take thousands of years for the inertia of the earth's climate to take effect

3.If the assumption about the delay of a new Ice Age is correct     .

A.the best way to overcome the cooling effect would be to burn more fuels

B.ice would soon cover the northern hemisphere

C.the increased levels of carbon dioxide would warm up the earth quickly

D.the greenhouse effect could work to the advantage of the earth

4.The purpose of the article is to explain     .

A.the greenhouse effect

B.the solar effects on the earth

C.the models of solar-weather interactions

D.the causes affecting weather

The moment I stepped in high school, I have made up my mind to study hard for the purpose of entering the good university. In the first year, I made a lot of new friends, all of who were so excellent. I felt great pressure during the second year. My scores went up or down and I felt so worrying. I told me that I needed relaxation. Listen to music was a good way. Besides, I would like to talk my friends, because they understood me. We would have some tea in the shop and then share secret. When we laughed out happy, all the annoyance would disappear.

Though China has increasingly adopted Western influences, the traditional family structure is still highly valued and holds a vital position in Chinese culture.1.These have been a part of daily life for many centuries.

2. He is responsible for maintaining, providing for and protecting his family. At the same time, he is given all the decision-making power when it comes to his wife, family and other family members. He is also responsible for taking care of and paying for his children. In modem families, the family members consult elders about important decisions, but the father no longer has the final say in regards to his adult children's lives.

Traditional Chinese mothers usually stay at home to take care of the home, the children, and the rest of the family. 3. However, they still rely on their husbands or fathers for financial support at some point in their lives.

As in many Asian cultures, the elders of the family are respected for their wisdom. In both traditional and modem families, elders are taken care of and looked up to by the rest of the family. In traditional families, including those living in a rural environment, many households include five generations living together. 4.

The Chinese culture has undergone many dramatic changes in recent years. 5. Families are still cherished, honored and respected, whether you live in the traditional, rural environment, or the modern, urban city.

A.Many modem Chinese women have careers.

B.In the traditional Chinese family, the man is very important.

C.Women in modem times are actually completely independent.

D.However, the family structure and the importance of family values remain a focus.

E.Even in modem households, many grandparents live with their children and their kids.

F.Therefore, the family structure has also changed greatly, influencing many modem families.

G.Both traditional and modem Chinese families have similar values and morals to one another.

The team of researchers from the University of Lincoln, UK, is designing and building an app to help farmers in hot climates identify and record the spread of locusts(蝗虫) on their land.

By recognizing locusts through the smartphone’s camera, the app will be able to identify the stage of the insect's growth and record its location. This information can then be utilized so that the farmers can use pesticides(杀虫剂) more accurately in the early stages of their life time, greatly reducing the amount of crop damage.

This approach could also reduce remaining pesticide levels, leading to increased food safety while maintaining food security and protecting nearby water systems.

“Each year, approximately 18 million hectares of land are damaged by locusts, influencing hugely farmers and their productivity, explains Dr. Bashir Al-Diri from the School of Computer Science at the University of Lincoln.” Their monitoring techniques currently rely on field surveys by people through digging insect eggs, but this information only helps farmers to make mid and long-term forecasting decisions and can delay effective management measures. By digitally recording the exact number, age and location of locusts, we hope this new app will put more knowledge and more power into the hands of the farmers.

Dr. Al-Diri and his team of computer scientists work with the Lincoln Institute for Agri-food Technology at the University of Lincoln, aiming to support and improve productivity, efficiency and farming through research, education and new technology.

With advanced technology, the developers hope that the app will also be used for a wide range in the future to capture and document information about the natural world. For example, it could easily be adapted to help individuals identify plant diseases or to digitally capture the number and type of birds and wildlife in specific locations as part of national and international surveys.

B.Their techniques can be used to dig insect eggs.

C.Farmers suffer greatly because of locusts.

D.Some steps must be taken before using the app.

4.What is the purpose of Al-Diri and his team?

A.To check if the app is useful in killing locusts.

B.To educate farmers on how to protect themselves.

C.To assist in raising agricultural production level.

D.To direct farmers to change their farming methods.

Older adults with a better sense of smell may live longer than those who have a poor sense of smell, a new study suggests. The study was a project of researchers in the United States that was ongoing for over 13 years. They asked nearly 2,300 men and women to identify 12 common smells. All the subjects were from 71 to 82 years of age. The researchers gave the adults scores, from 0 to as high as 12, based on how many smells they identified correctly.

During the years of follow-up investigation, over 1,200 of the subjects died. When the study was launched, none of the adults were weak. They could walk a little under half a kilometer, climb 10 steps and independently complete daily activities. In the latest findings, the researchers noted that those with a weak nose were 30 percent more likely to die than people with a good sense of smell. The findings were reported last month in the scientific publication Annals of Internal Medicine.

Honglei Chen, a doctor with Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, was the lead writer of a report on the study. He said the connection between a poor sense of smell and an increased risk of dying was limited to adults who first reported good-to-excellent health. This suggests that a poor sense of smell is an early and sensitive sign for worsening health before it is recognizable in medical tests. With a poor sense of smell, people are more likely to die of brain and heart diseases, but not of cancer or breathing disorders.

The results also suggest that a poor sense of smell may be an early warning for poor health in older age that goes beyond dementia or other neurodegenerative(神经变性的) diseases. These often signal the beginning of a weakening of the mind or body.

1.What do you know about the study mentioned?

A.The study involved researchers from the world.

B.All the participants were of different ages.

C.The study began to be performed about 13 years ago.

D.2 ,300 men and women were young and healthy.

2.What was the situation like at the beginning of the study?

A.More than 1,200 of the participants passed away.

B.Many of the subjects were found with health problems.

C.All the subjects were independent of others when walking.

D.One third of the participants had a poor smell sense.

3.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.People with a poor sense of smell have heart disease.

B.You should be careful with your health if you smell poorly.

C.People with a poor sense of smell won't suffer from cancer.

D.Most of the elder people may have the dementia disease.

4.Which is the best title for the passage?

A.Strong Sense of Smell May Be Linked to Longer Life

B.Old People Tend to Have a Poor Sense of Smell

C.A Number of Factors Result in Longer Life

D.Being Ill Means Losing the Sense of Smell

I took a motor rickshaw to the train station in the city of Belapur. The driver didn't speak much English, but understood, "Belapur Railway Station. ” I had my tabla, a traditional drum from India, my suitcase with my clothes and other essentials. The feeling of flying by cars in this little machine is : as if you are inside a box with tiny wheels, dashing through disorderly traffic.

I arrived at the station safely, and took a heavy breath as I unloaded my baggage before the ticket office. It was the first time that I had taken a local train to Tilak Nagar, where I was going to learn traditional vocal music. Standing in line, I counted at least 20 people staring at me. I bought my ticket, which was only 55 cents for a 20-minute train ride. The prices still blow me away.

When the train came after 15 minutes or so, I got on with all speed, as the train only stops for a few seconds. The locals again stared at me. This was a train especially for local transport. After a while, a young man asked me if he could talk to me. He wanted to know if I was in a band. I stated no, but I love to play tabla. Through the conversation I knew he was a student of engineering with his exams being tomorrow, I wished him good luck for the exams sincerely, as I knew what it means to Indian students to get good marks on their exams. If students do not get good enough scores, job opportunities will be few in a highly-competitive environment.

The student I met helped me unload my luggage as the train reached Tilak Nagar Station. He shook my hand strongly and looked into my eyes with marks of genuine care and friendship, despite us meeting for only 20 minutes.
