阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 [l]Fear and pain are two of the most useful things that human beings and animals have, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child would burn himself again and again, because fear would not warn himself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself before. A really fearless soldier is not a good soldier because he will soon be killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out. [2] In our first sentence we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: A plane may crash on your house, or you may get cancer! [3] The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but to use fear as your servant and guide instead. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take. [4] In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you. Fear warns you, then you jump out of the way, and all is well. [5] In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to ___________. For example, you can’t prevent a plane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear is no longer of any use, and you have to try to overcome it. 1.What is mainly talked about in this passage? (no more than 15 words) _________________________________________________________________________ 2.How does the author support his idea in Paragraph 2? (no more than 5 words) _________________________________________________________________________ 3.Why does the author say that a fearless soldier is not a good soldier? (no more than 15 words) _________________________________________________________________________ 4.What benefit can we get from “fear” according to the passage? (no more than 10 words) __________________________________________________________________________ 5.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 5 with proper words. (no more than 5 words) __________________________________________________________________________

I have been missing you very much after I went to college a year ago. Whenever I think of the old days, I feel very happily. I still remember when I was a child, you always held me in your arms and told me stories till I fall asleep. We often went to the fields to enjoy the pleasant view there. You told me the name of different plants and characteristics. Gradually, I became interesting in biology and chose to learn biology when I entered into the college. Now my friend Ann, together with me, are going to do field study and the findings will be use as materials for our research. Since we’ll do the study in our hometown,so I hope to see you then.

Given Australia’s size and the fact that early settlements were far apart, Australian society is remarkably homogeneous (同种的). Its citizens are fundamentally prosperous and the way of life in the major cities and towns is much the same however many miles divide them. It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents. However, there is some difference in lifestyle between city dwellers and the country people. Almost 90 per cent of the population lives in the fast-paced cities along the coast and has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert. The major cities preserve pockets of colonial heritage, but the overall impression is modern, with new buildings reflecting the country’s youth. In contrast, the rural communities tend to be slow-moving and conservative. For many years, Australia was said to have “ridden on the sheep’s back”, a reference to wool being the country’s main money earner. However, the wool industry is no longer dominant. Much of Australia’s relatively sound economy is now achieved from natural coal and wheat, and by being the largest diamond producer in the world. Newer industries such as tourism and wine making are also increasingly important. Australians are generally friendly and relaxed, with a self-deprecating sense of humor. On the whole, Australia is a society without hierarchies (等级制度), an attitude generally held to stem from its prisoner beginnings. Yet, contrary to widespread belief, very few Australians have true prisoner origins. Within only one generation of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, Australia had become a nation of immigrants. Originally coming almost entirely from the British Isles, today one in three Australians comes from elsewhere. Australia’s liberal postwar immigration policies led to an influx of survivors from war-torn Europe, most notably Greeks, Italians, Poles and Germans. The emphasis has shifted in recent years and today the majority of new immigrants are from Southeast Asia. Today Australia is a ‘blend of nations’ and although some racism exists, it has generally been a successful experiment and the country is justifiably proud to have one of the most harmonious multicultural communities in the world. 1.What does the writer mean by saying “It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents.” in the first paragraph? A.Australians speak Standard English with no local accents whatsoever. B.You have to practice a lot to learn to understand the different accents. C.The Australian regional accents are very difficult to understand indeed. D.There is not much difference between the accents in different areas of Australia. 2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.Most Australians have ancestors who were prisoners. B.The Australian economy is dependent on sheep exports. C.The majority of people living in Australia come from Europe. D.The pace of life is different in the city and in the country. 3.The underlined pronoun ‘it’ in the final paragraph refers to “_______”. A.Community B.racism C.blend of Nations D.Southeast Asia 4.We can infer from the passage that _____. A.there are no signs of Australia’s colonial past in its modern cities B.Australia’s recent immigration policy encourages immigrants from Southeast Asia C.immigrants from Southeast Asia have brought racial problems D.“riding on sheep’s back” resulted in slow development in rural communities
