There are many benefits of reading books. Unfortunately, in this day and age, not a lot of people take the time to read them anymore. But that doesn't change the fact that you're missing out on a lot of wonderful benefits! Read on to learn the various benefits of reading books!

It Feeds Your Mind.

Obviously, reading books provides you with new knowledge. Whenever you read something, you learn new information that you otherwise would not have known.

It can be a fact about history or a theory you did not know existed. If you want to learn new words in particular, reading books is a great way to enrich your vocabulary.

It Keeps Your Brain In Shape.

Reading also keeps your mind in good condition. Similar to solving puzzles,

reading books allows your mind to practice its processing skills.

Going without books for too long will turn your mind to mush (玉米面粥). I'm not

kidding! Why do you think they call television the boob tube?

It Develops Your Critical Thinking Skills.

One of the primary benefits of reading books is its ability to develop your critical

thinking skills. Reading mystery novels, for example, sharpens (使敏锐)your mind. Whenever you are faced with a similar problem in real life, your mind is now able to put its mystery-solving prowess to a test.

It Makes You More Articulate.

There's nothing quite like reading books to help you become a better conversationalist. Seeing how words are used (and how sentences are structured) with your own eyes helps you commit the information to memory better than by listening to a teacher discuss the points in class.

It Is Easy To Get To.

One of the great benefits of reading books is that the information in it can be read over and over again. When you're following a recipe, for example, reading a cookbook allows you the luxury享受of reviewing the processes and the ingredients whenever you need to.

These are just some of the wonderful benefits of reading books. Why don’t you drop by the bookstore or library and pick a book up? If you can’t even go outside, you can download free e-books on line and read them on your computer.

Biting could be worrying

IT makes our fingers look ugly. Its dirty. It could hurt a lot. But many people just cant stop doing it: biting their nails.

满分5 manfen5.com

Up to 45 percent of teenagers in the UK bite their nails, the BBC reported. There are also many famous nail biters, including ex-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and American singer Britney Spears.

There’s nothing wrong with biting nails to keep them tidy. But it could get out of control.

Some people bite a nail not because it’s too long, but because they are driving, reading, feeling stressed out, or just have nothing else to do.

The same could happen to skin picking and hair pulling. A normal behavior could become pathological(病态的), as experts say.

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association labeled (把……列为) nail biting as an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). People with this disorder may wash their hands too many times or have to line up their shoes in a certain way.

These behaviors have a lot in common. OCD is doing something normal and healthy too much, NPR reported.

But nail biting is different from other OCD behaviors in at least one way.

In OCD, the behavior is really unwanted,” Carol Mathews, a psychiatrist(精神病医生)at the University of California, San Francisco, told NPR. People with OCD don’t want to wash their hands over and over again. There is no fun in it. They just fear that if they don’t do something, something else that’s very bad will happen to them.

But nail biters enjoy it.

It’s rewarding. When you get the right nail, it feels good,” said Mathews.

Therefore some people argue that most nail biters are not having a problem as serious as a mental (心理的) disorder.

But anyway, it’s still a bad habit. So what can we do to stop it?

Since most people bite nails as a way of relieving (缓解) stress, finding another way to relieve that stress could be useful, suggested Rochelle Torgerson, a doctor at the Mayo Clinic in the US. Try playing with your pen instead.

Besides, nail biters feel the urge (刺激,冲动) to bite if they find a small imperfect part of the nail, said Mathews. So always keep your nails in good shape.

1.What does the phrase obsessive-compulsive disorder in Paragraph 6 mean?

A. An activity that people enjoy doing it.

B. A kind of behavior that people is really wanted.

C. A way of doing something that people does it normal and healthy.

D. A mental disorder that people are unable to control the thoughts or the activities.

2.How is nail biting different from other OCD behaviors?

A. People do it over and over again.

B. People do it happily and willingly.

C. It does no harm to people’s health.

D. It is a physical and mental problem.

3.What do doctors suggest people do to stop nail biting?

A. Pick skin or pull hair instead.

B. Force them to control the urge to bite.

C. Keep them busy and forget about nails.

D. Find some other ways to release their stress.

Koala Joey

满分5 manfen5.com

Far away in Australia, a koala sits high in a eucalyptus tree. She grips a branch with the rough pads and sharp claws on her paws. In her pouch (小袋) she hides something special—her baby.

At birth the baby koala, called a joey, does not look like his furry mom. He is pink and bald(无毛的)and as small as a jellybean. Although he cannot see, he moves his legs and crawls. He smells milk and, without any help, starts to feel his way to his mother’s pouch. Five minutes later he slips (滑) inside.

Inside the pouch, the joey drinks his mother’s milk and grows. His eyes open. His ears form, and he hears his mother’s calls. Soon thick fur covers his body. By the time the joey is ready to explore the world, he looks like his mother.

满分5 manfen5.com

At five months old, the joey peers out of his pouch. He eats a special soft food from his mother called pap. When the joey eats pap, he gets bacteria(细菌)from his mother’s stomach in his tummy too. He will need the bacteria to eat eucalyptus leaves, like grownup koalas do.

In another month, the joey leaves the pouch for the first time. He clings(贴着)to his mother’s belly while she climbs in the treetops. By the time he is eight months old, the joey no longer fits in his mother’s pouch. But he still drinks her milk.

Now, for a few hours each night, the joey climbs on his mother’s back for a ride. While riding piggyback, he reaches for eucalyptus leaves. Just like mom, he nips (咬) off leaves and chews them. The leaves have plenty of water in them, so koalas rarely go to the ground for a drink. When the joey is about one year old, his piggyback days are over. Now he climbs to the treetops by himself. On each of his front paws, he has two thumbs opposite his three fingers. He can grip branches and grab leaves.

The young koala spends more and more time away from his mother. He no longer drinks her milk. He dozes (打瞌睡,打盹) alone on tree branches. Soon he will move to another tree and live on his own.

1.When a joey is eight months old, it can _________.

A. eats a food called pap

B. rides on his mother’s back

C. sleeps on tree branches

D. clings to his mother’s belly

2.A joey stops drinking its mother’s milk when it is about_______.

A. one year old       B. six months old

D. compare a baby koala to other baby animals

A Special Lesson

When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying “I love you”. I was shocked (震惊) to learn that not one of my students has said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them.

“Does your mother love you?” “Of course,” they answered. “How do you know?” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was stunned (使目瞪口呆). So mom’s cooking and criticizing read out as “I love you”.

“Then do you say ‘I love you’ to her?” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by good jobs would be how they showed their love.

I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these questions in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different responses. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.

One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “Now that you have gone, I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”

In my family we all say “I love you” a lot. While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.

1.The foreign teacher _________.

A.comes from America

B.is a young woman

C.is expressive enough

D.knows much about China

2.Why was the foreign teacher shocked?

A. Because her students say "I love you" to her.

B. Because the students’ mums don't love them.

C. Because the students don’t know the meaning of “I love you”.

D. Because the students and their mums didn’t say “I love you” to each other.

3.In paragraph 5, what’s the real meaning of the mom's hugging?

A.She is meeting her daughter at the door.

B.She loves her daughter and misses her.

C.She is glad that she has more time to herself.

D.She finds it interesting to hug her daughter.

4.What's the main idea of the passage?

A.Say “I love you” more to your family.

B.Say “I love you” a lot to Chinese people.

C.Say “I love you” as a greeting to others.

D.Say “I  love you” without great depth of feelings.

International Pillow Fight Day

International Pillow Fight Day is held every April around the world—from Amsterdam, Budapest, to New York. It has been celebrated since 2008. Hundreds of people go out with their pillows hitting each other’s face, back and chest. People dress up as superheroes and animals, laughing and fighting.

The festival used to be a game to release (释放) energy and stress. Nowadays besides bringing fun, International Pillow Fight Day has become a way to quickly collect pillows for the homeless. In 2014, about 2,000 pillows were collected for the poor in Bronx and Brooklyn.

Rules: Bring your own pillows and don’t hit anyone without a pillow or with a camera.

The Guinness World Record: The latest record of the largest pillow fight was set on October 27, 2013 in Chicago, with 4,500 pillows and 3,813 people.

“Since when?” Beth asked.

“Well, I just ________ it now,” Jenny admitted (承认). “But don’t you think I’d make a good director?”

“I think I might make a good director,” Beth said. “Why should you be the director?”

Beth was one of Jenny’s two best friends. Jenny didn’t want to fight with her. But she ________ wanted to win this competition. She just had to direct the class movie.

“Let’s not fight,” Jenny said. “We’d both be good directors.”

“You’re right.” Beth grinned (笑嘻嘻). “We won’t fight. Let’s just say, may the best can collector win.”

Jenny shook Beth’s hand. “May the best can collector win,” she repeated.

Body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spoken language. People around the world show all kinds of feelings, wishes and attitudes that they might never speak aloud. It is possible to ―read‖ others around us, even if they do not want us to catch their unspoken communication. Of course, body language can be misread, but many gestures and actions are common.

满分5 manfen5.com

The most common facial expression is, of course, the smile its function is to show happiness and put people at ease. It does not always mean that we are truly happy, however. Smiles around the world can be false, hiding other feelings like anger, fear or worry. There are unhappy smiles, such as when someone ―loses face‖ and smiles to hide it. However, the general purpose of smiling is to show good feelings.

From the time we are babies, we show unhappiness or anger by frowning (皱眉头). In most places around the world, frowning and turning one’s back to someone shows anger. Making a fist (拳头) and shaking it almost always means that someone is angry.

How about showing that I am bored? Looking away from people or yawning will, in most cases, make me appear to be uninterested. However, if I turn toward and look at someone or something, people from almost every culture will think that I am interested.

Being respectful to people is subjective, based on each culture, but in general it is probably not a good idea to give a hug to boss or teacher. In almost every culture, it is not usually good to stand too close to someone of a higher rank (等级). Standing at a little distance with open hands will show that I am willing to listen.

With so many cultural differences between people, it is great to have some similarities in body language. We can often be wrong about each other, so it is an amazing thing that we understand each other as well as we do!

1.What is even more powerful than spoken language according to the passage?

2.What is the most common facial expression?

3.How do babies normally show their anger?

4.What is not good to do when you stay with someone of a higher rank?

5.What does the writer mainly want to tell us

Is there anything worse than that? You bravely raise your hand to answer a question, but your teacher just point out that you’re wrong. What a shame! What could the teacher make you suffer (忍受) this?

Relax. 1._____. Your teacher isn’t calling you out to humiliate (使丢脸) you, but rather out of concern for you and your education.

Having all your classmates come to know your weak points can be pretty hard, so how can you get past the shame and recognize class participation as a learning opportunity?

Get out of your comfort zone. Terrill Schumaker, a teacher, explains that “the more you speak out, the more you learn how to grow and build confidence. 2.______”

Realize it’s not a big deal. 3.______. People aren’t going to care all that much. “If I’m wrong or make a stupid point, then people laugh at me, but life moves on” says Grade 12 Kristen Wesenberg. Besides, everybody makes mistakes, and you can’t be perfect all the time.

4._____. Of course it takes courage (勇气), but as Wesenberg says, ―What’s the point of living in fear?‖ You won’t learn anything if you are not brave enough.

Use the experience as a learning tool. Wesenberg advises asking teachers why you’re wrong so they can explain and you can learn. 5.______. If you’re wrong now, at least you won’t be wrong in your next test!

A. Be brave in class

B. Trust your teacher instead

C. Use class time as a mini—test

D. And its not the end of the world

Bad news travels fast – when you watch the evening news or read the morning papers, it seems that things that get the most coverage are all sad events or situations like wars, earthquakes, floods, fires and murders.

This is the classic rule for mass media (大众传媒). ―They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling,‖ Jonah Berger, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, US, told The New York Times.

But with social media getting more and more popular, information is now being spread in different ways, and researchers are discovering new rules good news can actually spread faster and farther than bad accidents and other sad stories.

Berger and his colleague Katherine Milkman looked at thousands of articles on The New York Times website and analyzed (分析) the ―most e-mailed‖ list for six months.

One of his findings was that articles in the science part were much more likely to make the list. Those science stories waked up feelings of awe (敬畏) and made the readers want to share this positive emotion with others.

Besides science stories, readers were also found to be likely to share articles that were exciting or funny. “The more positive an article was, the more likely it was to be shared,”Berger wrote in his new book. “For example, stories about newcomers falling in love with New York City,” he writes, “seemed to be shared more than the death of a popular zookeeper.”

But does all this good news actually make the readers feel better? Not necessarily.

According to a study by researchers at Harvard University, people are more likely to say more positive things about themselves when they’re talking to a bigger audience, rather than just one person, which helps explain all the perfect vacations that keep showing up on micro blogs. This, researchers found, makes people think that life is unfair and that they’re less happy than their friends.

But no worries. There’s a quick and easy way to take the despair from you that you get from viewing other people’s seemingly perfect lives – turn on the television and watch the news. There is always someone doing worse than you are.

1. In Berger’s opinion, bad news covers most papers because ______.

A. the public cares for reading sad events

B. mass media wants to attract the public’s attention

C. the public tries to share positive feelings with each other

D. mass media wants the public to help those unlucky people

2.Which of the following might be e-mailed most according to Berger?

A. The perfect vacation of your friend.

B. The death of a popular zookeeper.

C. The story of a creative scientist.

D. The flood hitting a small town.

3.We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. bad news always makes people sad

B. good news sometimes has negative influence

C. people can remove despair by reading good news

D. people prefer to share bad news with a bigger audience

4. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Good News Spreads Fast

B. The Power of Good News

C. The Effect of Bad News

D. Bad News Travels Fast

One of the most common forms of public speaking is the ―presentation‖. A presentation is one of the best ways of communicating your message. This article will give you seven of the most important areas to consider when giving any presentation.

Preparation Prepare! Prepare! Prepare! Good preparation is very important for any presentation. With good preparation and planning you will be fully confident. This will give you control. With control, you will be ―in charge‖ and your audience (听众) will listen positively to your message.

Structure A good presentation has a clear structure, like a good book or film. It usually has a beginning, a middle part and an end.

Equipment You may use any of the following pieces of equipment as you want: whiteboard, flipchart, overhead projector, 35 mm slide projector and computer graphics.

Each of these has advantages and disadvantages. The important thing is to know and understand your equipment perfectly, and then you can use it freely and properly.

Visual Aids ―A picture is worth 1,000 words.‖ There are many types of visual aids (直观教具) photographs, maps, tables etc. But you should use them with care. Do not overload your audience with too much information in a short time. A good rule is: use one image to give one message.

Signposting When you read a book, you know where you are. You know the title of the book, the end of one chapter, and even the page number. But when you give a presentation, your audience does not know where they are unless you TELL them! You can use special language called ―signaling‖ or ―signposting‖ to help you. Here are a few examples: Let’s begin by...; Now we’ll move on to...; To start with...later...; To finish up....

Audience Relations You need a warm and friendly relationship with your audience. How do you achieve this? Well, enthusiasm is contagious. If you are enthusiastic (热情的), your audience will be enthusiastic too. Try to make eye contact with each member of your audience. Each person should feel that you are speaking to him or her personally.

Body Language Your BODY speaks to your audience even before you open your mouth. From your clothes, walk, glasses, haircut and your expression, your listeners form their first impression as you enter the room.

1. How will you be fully confident in a presentation according to the passage?

A. With necessary equipment.

B. With enough visual aids.

C. With proper body language.

D. With careful preparation.

2.The writer may agree that signposting can help ______.

A. speakers to be more enthusiastic

B. the audience catch up with speakers

C. the audience form the first impression

D. speakers avoid using equipment improperly

3. What does the underlined word ―contagious‖ in Paragraph 8 mean?

A. Highly praised.    B. Deeply hidden.

C. Clearly expressed. D. Easily spread.

For centuries, the body’s blood has been connected closely with the feelings. People who show no human emotions or feelings are said to be cold-blooded.

Cold can affect other parts of the body. But the expression get cold feet has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be CEO of a company. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned (辞职), and all the work of the company will be your responsibility (责任). You are likely to get cold feet about being CEO when you understand the situation.

The expression give someone the cold shoulder probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise (遵守诺言) he made to you, or to someone who has lied about you to others.

A cold fish”is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. He or she will never feel sorry for those in bad situation.

Out in the cold” means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise—he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
