Most people at some time or another have dreamed of being a popular kid at school. Being popular in middle school is much easier than it sounds. Just follow a few steps and finally see what it feels like to be a popular kid.

First, why do you want to be popular? Ask yourself if your desire(渴望) for being popular comes from looking down on yourself or an unlucky situation. If it does, then work first on your self-confidence.

Be friendly to everyone, even people that other people think are weird or different. If you are strange or different, realize (意识到)that everyone is strange in their own way. Take part in school activities and make yourself more visible( 可见的) to the school population.

Find a talent or special skill that you have. Whether your skill is telling jokes, drawing, singing or playing soccer, show your skill in right way.

Volunteer to help with classroom or school activities that will help you leave a good impression (印象)on teachers. Develop a personal style that you feel goes well with your personality.

Be yourself and have fun. Keep your strong sense and personality. Join school clubs, sporting teams and student government to show yourself as someone who makes a difference at your school .

An old man was fishing on the bank of a river. A child came to see him fishing. The old man was really good at fishing and it didn't take long for him to catch a full basket of fish. The old man saw that the child was very cute, and he wanted to give her a whole basket of fish. But the child shook her head. The old man was surprised and asked, "Why don't you want the fish?" The child replied, “I want the fishing rod (竿) in your hands.” The old man asked, “Why do you want the rod?”

“It doesn't take long to eat all the fish in a basket. But if I have the fishing rod, I can go fishing by myself and I won't be afraid of not having any more fish to eat.”

I think you will certainly say that the child is very smart. Wrong! If she doesn't know how to fish, she cannot have fish to eat, even though she has the fishing rod. It's useless to only have a fishing rod. Fishing skills are the most important, not the fishing rod.

Too many people think that if they have a “fishing rod” in their life, they will no longer fear the wind and rain. They are just like the child, who thought that if sh e had a fishing rod, she would have fish to eat.

1.Why did the child refuse(拒绝) the fish the old man gave her?

A. Because she didn’t like fish.

B. Because she wanted his fishing rod

C. Because the old man had few fish.

D. Because she wanted to learn fishing skills

2.The writer thought the child was __ after she explained why she didn’t want the fish.

A. smart           B. hardworking

C. silly(傻的)     D. creative(有创造力的)

3.The article mainly tell us _________

A. if you have a “fishing rod” in your life, you won’t be afraid of anything.

B. if you have a fishing rod, you’ll have a lot of fish to eat

C. “fishing skills” are more important than “the fishing rod” in life.

D. “the fishing rod” is more important than the fish that people catch

4.What is the best title for the article?

A. The Fishing Rod

B. The Fishing Man

C. The Fishing Girl

D. The fishing Experience

Li Haoqin is a 14-year-old girl in Sichuan. She studies English very hard. Every day, she listens carefully in class and does many exercises after class. However, in the last exam, her score(分数) of 68 made her very sad. “Why didn’t I get a good grade though I worked hard?” Li said to herself.

Lots of middle school students are facing this problem—they try their best at something but can’t make it. “They don’t have effective(有效的) learning ways. This is the main reason for their difficulties,” says Bi Qin. Bi Qin is a well-known English teacher in Beijing No.4 High School, a key school in the capital city. She thinks that hard work is far from enough for middle school students. “Students have more subjects now. They should learn in many different ways so that they can get twice the result with half the hard work,” says Bi. “The more you use new words, the better you can remember them. For example, making sentences with new words is an effective way to learn.”

Chen Xiping, a 13-year-old boy from Shandong, has his own way of learning English. “I study hard in school, and I also like watching CCTV-9. On the channel(频道), I always see the English words I have learned from my textbook,” says Chen. “It’s really useful.”

Lin Pingyi, a 13-year-old girl from Shanghai, has a habit of reading. “I like reading English novels like The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. While reading I take notes,” says Lin. “This way, I can remember more words and improve (提高) my reading and writing.”

Dear Linda,

I have got your letter. I know that you want to have your own club, but you don’t know how to start one. Do you know what makes a club, such as an English Club or a Basketball Club, successful? Here is some advice.

◆Decide what kind of club to have, and come up with a nice name. Since you are interested in music, why not start a Music Club? A club is to bring people with common interests together.

◆Look for members. You can start with your friends, but it isn’t really a club until people you don’t know want to join.

◆Make rules. Get together with the members and agree on rules. Make sure that if someone breaks any rule(违反规定), he or she should be punished.

◆Have regular meetings. For the first time, you should make sure that all the members attend. Call the members to remind(提醒) them of it, and use the meeting to organize future meetings and other activities. I hope that these ideas may help you and that you can have your own club soon.

Yours,
