Music can calm the soul and inspire creativity, but it won’t, according to researchers from Harvard, improve intelligence.

“More than 80 percent of American adults think that music can improve children’s grades or intelligence, “said Samuel Mehr, a Harvard Graduate School of Education doctoral student in a statement. “Even in the scientific community, there’s a general belief that music is important to children’s development — but there is very little evidence(证据) supporting the idea that music classes improve children’s intelligence.”

The view that music improves intelligence can date back to a study published in 1993 in the journal Nature, which describes the “Mozart effect” as the ability for people who play instruments to perform better at spatial(空间的) problems. The study later was proved wrong, but the idea that music could make you smarter remained.

To test the connection between music and intelligence, researchers studied 29 parents and their four-year-olds. It turned out that music training did not improve the children’s intelligence. The children who had music training performed only slightly better at one spatial problem.

The researchers then did the study again, but with 45 parents and children. Half the group were given music training and the other half didn’t receive any. As with the first study, the second round produced no evidence that music training made the participants any smarter.

The researchers limited their research to classical music, and didn’t show whether different types of music made any difference. And while they concluded that the idea that music makes you smarter is a myth(谬见), they argue that teaching children music is still important, and may have other advantages that aren’t all connected with intelligence.

PEOPLE— ________

This Thursday, Irena Sendler will be honoured for her work as a smuggler (偷运者). During World War II, the Polish social worker smuggled nearly 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw ghetto (聚居区). She gave them new identities, found them safe places with good-hearted Christians, and kept the children’s real names buried in jars in her neighbours’ gardens. (The play, Life in a Jar, based on her story, is being performed.) At 93, Sendler lives in a Warsaw nursing home and is too weak to travel to Washington D.C., to receive the 2003 Jan Karski Award for Valor and Compassion from the American Center of Polish Culture. One of the children she saved will accept the award for her.

You risked your life to save the children.

I was taught by my father that when someone is drowning, you don’t ask if they can swim, you just jump in and help. During the war, everyone was drowning, but mostly the Jewish children.

How did you persuade parents to give up their children?

I had to answer honestly that I didn’t even know if we would get past the guards.

What was the most frightening moment?

When I saw a priest (牧师) in charge of an orphanage for Jewish children in the ghetto walk with them out to be killed. The children were in their best Sunday suits. The priest was killed with them.

How did you get the children to behave as you smuggled them out?

I told the older children to act as if they were sick and sometimes gave the younger ones a sleeping pill. They were told to remember their new names. I also told the children to tell guards they had only been visiting a servant in the ghetto and were going back to their real homes outside.

Did you tell your own two children what you did?

I never told them. Only when my daughter went to Israel did she learn all about me. I thought it was only normal to do so. And it was a very painful subject. It was always on my mind that I couldn’t do more.

1.We can learn from the passage that Irena Sendler ________.

A.will go to Washington to accept the award with her daughter

B.was caught a few times while she was rescuing the Jewish children

C.told those parents that their children’s lives would be guaranteed

D.saved thousands of Jewish children at the risk of her own life

2.The expression “everyone was drowning” can best be replaced by “________”.

A.everyone was involved in the war

B.all the people were drowned

C.all the people were facing danger and death

D.Jewish children were being killed

3.Which one could NOT be expected when Sendler was smuggling the Jewish children?

A.The children pretended to be brothers and sisters from one big family.

B.Some children pretended to be returning home after visiting servants in the ghetto.

C.The children were asked to remember and use new names instead of real ones.

D.Some children were told to pretend to be sick in front of the guards.

4.Which of the following is best for the blank in the title?

A.DISASTER SURVIVOR B.IMPRESSIVE SMUGGLER

C.AWARD RECEIVER D.SECRET DEFENDER

Any snakebite can be dangerous if infection (感染) sets in. Some types of snake poison make the bite area swollen (肿胀的) or painful. Others cause bleeding or damage the heart’s nerves. Here are some especially dangerous snakes:

The largest of all poisonous snakes, king cobras can reach 5.5 meters in length. Each king cobra bite contains enough poison to kill an elephant — or 20 people. But these big snakes usually avoid people. They live throughout India, southern China and Southeast Asia.

A bite from Australia’s inland taipan, the world’s most poisonous snake, releases enough poison to kill 100 men. The good news is that people rarely come in contact with this snake, and a treatment for its poison exists.

Russell’s viper lives throughout Asia, including India, southern China, and on the island of Taiwan. It prefers grassy fields but can be found in forests and urban areas. It bites more people and causes more deaths than any other poisonous snake.

Though short, the common Indian krait packs a powerful punch (攻击) in its bite. Most often, it strikes people at night while they are sleeping. Since the bite causes little pain, victims are often not sure that they have been bitten until they begin to experience stomach cramps (痉挛). Without treatment, symptoms will worsen quickly and can lead to death.

The black mamba, a native of Africa, is actually olive or grey in color. Only the inside of its mouth is black. When black mambas feel threatened by a human, they make a loud hissing sound to warn the person away. If the warning is ignored, the snake will attack the person repeatedly. And they can attack quickly, moving over the ground at speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour.

1.According to this article, what is a particular feature (特点) of the king cobra?

A. Its seasonal changes. B. Its lack of movement.

C. Its sense of hearing. D. Its amazing size.

2.According to this article, which of the following is known for its speed?

A. The inland taipan. B. The black mamba.

C. The Indian krait. D. The Russell’s viper.

3.What does the article imply about the inland taipan?

A. It is believed to have died out.

B. Meeting with it can cause death.

C. Some people keep one as a pet.

D. Very little is known about its behavior.

4.In which magazine would you most likely find this article?

A. Let’s Explore Nature B. Weekly Travel Digest

C. Psychology Magazine D. Global Warning News

More and more shoppers are buying things online these days, allowing them to avoid aggressive salespeople and long lines at checkout counters. In spite of online convenience, however , there are some items — like clothes — that customers prefer to examine before buying. In light of this, two companies are finding ways to modernize stores and ______ the gap between online and in-store retail (零售).

A software company that also happens to sell designer jeans, Hointer has created a fast and painless shopping experience for its customers.

Shoppers walk into a Hointer store and select one of the many pairs of jeans _____ down from bars. Then they point their smartphones at the tag and ______ the Hointer app, after which they select the size and press “try on.” The app then directs them to a specific dressing room. German-made robots bring out the ______ jeans and deliver them through a chute (斜槽) to the dressing room in about 30 seconds. Immediately after _____ pairs of jeans are dropped through another chute, the “outbox,” they disappear from the list in the app.

Purchases at Hointer are made with a swipe (刷卡) of a credit card. And interacting with a salesperson is optional! This allows Hointer to hire fewer people and focus on their ultimate goal: developing ______ that supports a retail revolution.

Men’s clothing retailer Bonobos has come up with a more personalized shopping experience. Although it is — in fact — an online retailer, Bonobos has decided to open a handful of brick-and-mortar stores called Guideshops. Shoppers make an appointment online before arriving at a Guideshop, where they receive one-on-one ______ from a fitting guide. Because these shops have limited inventories (存货), shoppers aren’t able to take home the outfits they select. But guides help shoppers make online purchases before they leave, after which the items will be____ to customers in one or two days.

While Hointer focuses on convenience, Bonobos Guideshops focus on customer service. But both efforts have one thing in common: giving clothing retailers a new look for the 21st century.

Why do you run? Different people have different reasons. Whatever your reason, there’s one thing we can be sure of: Running is much better injury-free. In his book, Dr. Jordan Metzl’s Running Strong, Metzl has the perfect suggestions for enjoying your running without losing your well-being. Here are five must-follow rules for injury-free running:

1. Train for your level of fitness and your goals.

1. If you run for fitness and your goal is 30 minutes a day, that’s cool. But if you are just starting out, you need to get there slowly.

2. Wear the right shoes for your feet.

You will hear lots of opinions about whether running shoes really help prevent injury and whether you should even wear them. 2. And some of you may need a little added assistance from inserts (鞋垫).

3. 3..

Be honest about how much sleep you need and stick to it. The cool runner is the one who wins the race. Sleep will get you there.

4. Fuel (给提供能量) your body right for running and recovery.

4. And after workout or race, you need to deliver nutrients (营养物)to all the body rebuilders in your muscles, so they can do their job and get you back into perfect shape for your run tomorrow.

5. Pay attention to pain.

When pain changes the way you run, stop running. 5. And use dynamic rest (动态休息)to stay in shape until you are back on your running feet.

A. Try to find out what’s going on and treat it.

B. Get seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

C. Running should be seen as fun rather than pain.

D. Don’t run more miles than your body can deal with.

E. A good pre-run meal plan is one that keeps you stepping strong.

F. It is because of the health benefits, including lowering your risk for disease.

G. The right running shoes can help correct foot-movement problems that lead to injury.

On Sunday, November 3, 2019, most North Americans will mark the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) by moving their clocks back an hour. This simple action will not only add an extra 60 minutes to their weekend, but also shift (变换,变动) daylight back into the morning hours, making it a little less painful to wake up for school and work during the shorter winter days.

Operating the clocks was first suggested by Benjamin Franklin in 1784. He mentioned the idea in a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris and advised it should be a way to save candles, but it was not taken seriously. George Hudson from New Zealand also recommended moving the clocks back two hours in 1895 to get extra daylight time to study insects. Unfortunately, neither he nor British people William Willett, who suggested it in 1907 as a way to save electricity costs, got their wish.

It was the German Empire that began the clock shifting tradition on April 30, 1916, to save fuel needed to produce weapons and bombs for World War I. Though a few others, including the US and Britain, adopted the tradition shortly after, all the countries returned to Standard Time once the war ended, only to start DST again during World War II. Once the battle ended in 1945, the US government ended DST nationally but allowed states and districts to continue the tradition and even allowed them to establish their own start and stop dates.

However, though there have been many attempts to persuade lawmakers to end DST, both in the US and Europe, they have not been successful.     Parents do not owe (欠) their children a college education. If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to a good university. But they needn’t feel guilty if they can’t. When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them an apartment. They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.

Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.

One of their obligations is to give their children a personal worth. Children who are always made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins will become so unsure, so afraid of failing that they won’t try at all. Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it’s often better to let children learn their mistakes by themselves in time. All their parents should do is to trust them, respect them, understand them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms (批评) are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.

Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deed. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.

No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.

One day a poor man was begging with an old wallet in his hand. As he felt sad at his own bad luck, he kept wondering why some wealthy people were never satisfied and were always wanting more.

“Here,” said he, “is the master of this house—I know him well. He is a wealthy businessman. He should have turned over his business to others, and then he could have spent the rest of his life happily, but he didn’t. Instead, he sent his ships to sea to trade with foreign lands. However, there were great storms on the water, so his ships were destroyed and his treasure disappeared in the sea. As for me, if I had only enough to eat and to buy clothing, I would not want anything more.”

Just at that moment, Fortune came down the street. She saw the poor man and stopped. She said to him, “Listen! I want to help you. Hold your wallet, and I will pour this gold into it, but only on this condition: all that falls into the wallet shall be pure gold, but every piece that falls upon the ground shall become dust. Do you understand?”

“Oh, yes,” said the poor man.

“Then be careful,” said Fortune. “Your wallet is old, so do not load it too heavily.”

The beggar was so glad that he quickly opened his wallet, and a stream of yellow dollars poured into it. The wallet grew heavy.

“Is that enough?” asked Fortune.

“Not yet.”

“Isn’t the wallet cracking (裂开)?”

“Never fear.”

The beggar’s hands began to tremble. Ah, if the gold would only pour forever!

“You are the richest man in the world now!”

“Just a little more, add just a handful or two.”

Another piece was added, and the wallet cracked. The treasure fell upon the ground and turned to dust. The beggar had nothing now but his empty wallet. He was as poor as before.

New movies set holiday eve record

Chinese moviegoers set a box office (票房) record for the eve of the week—long National Day holiday. By 9:30 p.m. September 30, new movies had brought in 630 million yuan.

The major movies contributing to the box office record were My People, My Country, The Captain and The Climbers.

My People, My Country ranked first by bringing in around 270 million yuan. It was made up of seven short stories which were set in historic moments to look back at New China’s 70 years of existence. The movie was co-directed by Chen Kaige, Zhang Yibai, Guan Hu, Xue Xiaolu, Xu Zheng, Ning Hao and Wen Muye.

Another well-received film, The Captain, earned 194 million yuan to occupy second place. Starring actor Zhang Hanyu, the film is based on heroic Sichuan Airlines pilot Liu Chuanjian, who completed one of the most miraculous (奇迹的) emergency landings in China’s civil aviation (民航) history.

Also adapted from real events, The Climbers earned 157 million yuan. With an excellent cast including Zhang Ziyi and Wu Jing, the film is about Chinese mountaineers’ climbing to the top of Mount Qomolangma.
