Some people doubt the accuracy and reliability of the facial recognition technology. They need notbecause the technology is highly advanced. It can distinguish a human face with or without glasses. Tests show it has a precision rate of more than 99 percent.

Some argue that the fingerprint or iris (虹膜) recognition system is perhaps more accurate than the facial recognition system. Truebut for iris recognitiona person has to hold his or her head still and look at the camerawhich is timeconsuming and thus not suitable for public spaces such as subway stations. And the fingerprint recognition system is not so secureas some people can cheat the system by copying and using the fingerprints of other people to enter or exit a station.

Facial recognition is a rather mature system. A facial recognition system collects people’s facial images from different anglesinstead of oneand therefore minimizes the chance of cheating. Actuallyit is already being applied in many fields such as unlocking smartphones and computers. Besidesfacial recognition technology can also help the police to hunt escaped criminals in public spaces.

Howeverthe law says a citizen’s photo should not be collected for commercial use without his/her permission. To avoid such legal riskssome measures should be taken before the collection of passenger information. Firstcompanies must ensure the collected facial images are only for public convenienceand will never be used for other commercial purposessuch as advertisements. Secondcompanies must take necessary measures to make sure not even a single one is leaked or sold to any third party without the passenger’s permission. Generallyadvanced technologies are welcome to be used in public spacesbut people’s rights must be respectedat least to avoid legal risks.

Life isn’t fair. That universal truth is something that children seem to understand at a young agebut the path through which they develop a sense of what’s fair and what isn’t—and how they act on injustices—is something that has been a puzzle for social scientists.

To find out which aspects of fairness might be universal and which might be culturally drivena team of scientists traveled to seven countries to study how different groups of children play fair. The researchers designed an “inequity(不公平) game” that they used to test 866 pairs of children aged 4 to 15 in CanadaIndiaMexicoPeruSenegalUganda and the United States.

Two children of the same gender(性别) and similar age were seated across from each other and were offered some candy. Sometimes the allocations were equal and sometimes they were not. One of the two children got to decide whether both of them accepted the allocation or rejected it. The experiment was set up to work through a machine that required the child to pull one handle to accept the deal—resulting in the candy being poured into a bowl for two children each—and a different handle to reject it—pouring the sweets into a third bowl where neither one would get to eat them.

In all seven countriesthe results indicated a rejection of disadvantageous inequity. That iswhen the children were allocated less candy than othersthey tended to route all the treats into the bowl that no one could access. The reactions to advantageous inequity were more mixed. Children in only three countries—the United StatesCanada and Uganda—had a tendency to reject unequal distributions of candy when they got more than others. “Given that these countries tend to stress principles of equalityit is possible that children in these countries face social pressures to learn these principles earlier” the researchers wrote.

Looking smart in a blue buttondown shirtJorge Magana18zipped through a PowerPoint(PPT) presentation with confidence. Seated in front of Magana in a classroom at Los Angeles High School of the Arts were three judges: the school’s Assistant Headmastera school coordinatorand a former student. The occasion was his senior defense. Magana was trying to convince the judges that he was ready to graduate.

He had 45 minutes to present his portfolio(作品选集) from three aspects: one academicone artisticand one of his own choosing. The judges grilled him: Can you describe your research process? Which difficulties did you face and how did you overcome them? How will the skills you learned help with your future plans?

Portfolio assessments like this onewhich are considered by educators nationwide as a proven path to college successhave largely been squeezed out by standardized teststhe quickerless costly measure of student performance. But the state’s reliance on test scores to rank school performance is about to changeand educators see an opportunity. For nowthe goal at the Los Angeles Unified School District is to make the portfolio defense a graduation requirement. Ten high schools are testing the portfolio assessmentand there are plans to get more schools on board next school year.

At firstmany teachers at Los Angeles High School of the Arts thought the defense was unnecessary. Thenthey actually witnessed the defenses. “You can see your students reflect on what they’ve learnedand see how that learning has affected them” says Isabel Moralesa 12th grade social studies teacher. “Watching the defenses taught me how much my lessons counthow important it is for me to provide a new learning experience for my students. ”

Every person has time for exercise. The way is to take steps to include exercise convenient for your lifestyle. After I started getting into a habit of exercising, I was surprised by how much I could get done in a day, both physically and mentally. You can make exercise a part of your daily lifestyle. 1.

Start small

One of the reasons exercise programs fail is that we bite off more than we can chew. Instead of telling yourself you’re going to exercise today for an hour, tell yourself you’re going to exercise for five minutes. 2.

Break your exercise into parts.

No time for 30 minutes of exercise? No problem. Do three bouts (一回) of 10 minutes, or six bouts of five minutes each.3. Just keep a running table of how many minutes you exercise each day to ensure you’re getting the minimum you desire.

4.

Devices such as Fitbit activity trackers (跟踪系统) turn exercise into a game of sorts. Each day, you can measure how many steps you’ve taken. Many people find this attractive to their competitive spirits, and they and they take great pains to meet their goals. The technology is there, and it’s very affordable.

Exercise with someone else.

5. You don’t want to let him or her down, even if you’re feeling like you’d rather not work out. Find someone and start moving. You’ll be able to inspire one another and celebrate your success.

A. Use technology to help.

B. Always stay active with exercise.

C. Yes, just five minutes and get up to walk around.

D. Here are four steps to help you do it effectively.

E. You’ll still get the same time, no matter how you break it down.

F. High-tech products are becoming popular with many young people.

G. It’s much more difficult to say “no” to exercise when you have an exercise partner.

By teaching your children healthy eating habits, and copying the behavior in yourself, you can help your children keep a healthy weight and normal growth. Also, the eating habits your children form when they are young will help them keep a healthy lifestyle when they grow up.

Your children’s health care provider can evaluate (评估) your children’s weight and growth and let you know if your children need to lose weight or if any dietary changes need to he made.

Some of the most important parts of healthy eating are portion control and cutting down on how much fat and sugar your children eat or drink. Simple ways to reduce fat intake in your children’s diet and improve a healthy weight include serving

Low-fat or nonfat dairy products

Poultry without skin

Lean cuts of meat

Whole grain bread and cereals

Fruit and vegetables

Also, reduce the amount of sugar-sweetened drinks and salt in your children’s diet.

If you are unsure how to select and prepare a variety of foods for your family, ask a registered dietitian (营养师) for advice.

It is important that you should not place your overweight children on a restrictive (限制性的) diet. Children should never be placed on a restrictive diet to lose weight unless a doctor takes charge of one for medical reasons.

1.What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A.Parents are mirrors for their children.

B.Teaching children eating healthily is also helpful for parents.

C.That children are healthy is important.

D.Forming healthy eating habits is important for children.

2.What are the most important parts of healthy eating your children should control?

A.Fat and sugar.

B.Water and meat.

A.How to lose weight.

B.How to eat healthily.

C.How to reduce fat and sugar.

D.How to keep a healthy weight.

4.What shouldn’t your children do if they want to lose weight unless doctors tell them to?

A.Limiting diets.

B.Taking exercise.

C.Listening to parents.

D.Reducing fat intake.

Many years ago, when I was in high school and working weekends to pay for the extras that my family couldn’t really afford, I lost my wallet.

My old car needed gassing up in the back. I prepaid and then put my wallet on the bumper(保险杠), and drove off. I hadn’t even had time to miss it when my phone rang and a man asked me if I had lost my wallet. I checked my pocket and to my surprise, I didn’t find my wallet. He asked me to tell him how much money was in it. He then told me where to pick up my wallet.

As I pulled into his driveway, I noticed his handicapped van(残疾人车) and the ramp(斜坡) going up to the house. I was thinking that this man must have had difficulty in getting out of his van and getting my wallet off the street. He had to pull over, get in his wheelchair, lower the lift, and then pick it up. I was just surprised. I felt grateful.

I knocked on the door and he told me to come in. I thanked him about 10 times for finding my wallet. I was stuck, though. While I didn’t want to insult him by offering money, I really felt like offering something. So I asked him if there was anything I could do to repay his kindness, and he said, “Just pass it on.” I said I would be certain to do that. I was raised to be honest in any circumstance and I would have done so, without promising this fellow I would, but I wanted to repay his kindness, so I willingly promised I would.

B. He asked the writer to pass his kindness on.

C. He asked the writer to repay his kindness.

3.What can we learn from the man’s action?

A. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

C. Good is rewarded with good.

D. Help others, but don’t ask for anything.

4.Which of the following can best describe the man who picked up the writer’s wallet?

A. Intelligent. B. Serious.

C. Noble. D. Patient.

When I was a child, my parent would pack their bags but go on vacation every July. My sister and I were left at the home with our grandparents. We enjoyed staying with them, whom allowed us to eat cookies for breakfast and stay up to watching The Tonight Show. But we also looked forward their coming back. It wasn’t because we miss them. It was because we wanted the gifts that we would bring back from their travels. My parents would ever let us down. They brought back much presents for us.

All of my five children played team sports in middle school and high school, and four of them are in college. 1..

Teenagers may get into bad habits. 2. According to a study in Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, a survey of more than 14,000 teenagers found that those who had taken part in team sports were less likely to smoke or have unhealthy eating habits.

As children get older, they naturally develop their own lives and there will be fewer ways for parents to be involved(参与). Some teenagers shut their parents out of their room.3..

Sports build strong and healthy bodies. Children who compete know that they are only at their best if they eat and rest well.4. In sports, strength and speed are wanted. Team sports help kids avoid obesity(肥胖) problems even better than activities like running or biking.

5. The joy of a sports season stays with us long after the season is over. Our children may forget who was in their English class or which math teacher they had in the 10th grade one day. But they will never forget their sports teams.

A. Team sports can bring lifelong memories.

B. Team sports make a child’s social world wider.

C. As a matter of fact, doing sports makes us a better family.

D. However, they still want their parents to attend their games.

E. Cigarettes and drugs harm their performance and every athlete knows that.

F. But teenagers who often take part in team sports have less time for bad behavior.

Smoking is harmful. But as soon as you quit the habit, everything will be OK, right? Wrong.

New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done to your genes will stay there for a much longer time. In the research, a team of US scientists studied the blood of 16,000 people. Among them, some were smokers, some used to smoke, and the rest were non-smokers. Scientists compared their genes and found that more than 7,000 genes of smokers had changed--a number that is one-third of known human genes.

According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer are caused by genetic changes. Some people may have had the changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day-to-day lives while doing things like smoking.

When you stop smoking, a lot of these genes will return to normal within five years.

This means your body is trying to heal (治愈) itself of the harmful effects of smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as long as 30 years, It’s almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement (水泥)----it will always be there, even when you’ve walked away and when the cement becomes dry.

Although the study results may make people unhappy, there is a bright side: the findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.

1.The function of Paragraph 1 is to_________ .

A.introduce the topic of the passage B.give an example

C.make an argument D.show the main idea of the passage

2.Most genetic changes happen because of___________ .

A.people’s condition at birth B.environmental pollution

C.people’s bad living habit D.heart disease and cancer

3.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to__________ .

A.the footprint B.the cement

C.the harmful effect D.the genetic change

4.Which of the following statements is true?

A.The findings are the fruit of more than three years’ research.

B.The findings have prevented more people from starting smoking

C.The findings offer evidence that a damaged gene can heal itself.

D.The findings help to find cures for genetic damage caused by smoking.

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格)of directions every time I ask “ How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑的)in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks(地标)in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “ Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “ Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance in time, not miles. “ How far away is the post office?” you ask. “ Oh,” they answer, “ it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “ Yes, but how many miles is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “ Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “ I don't know”. People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

1.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually _______ .

A.describe the place carefully

B.show him a map of the place

C.tell him the names of the streets

D.refer to recognizable buildings and places

2.What is the place where people measure distance in time?

A.New York. B.Los Angles.

C.Kansas          C. Iowa

3.People inYucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ________ .

A.in order to save time B.as a test

C.so as to be polite D.for fun

4.What can we infer from the text?

A.It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.

B.It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.

C.People have similar understanding of politeness.

D.New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally help people protect the environment. It’s a village in Panama that is going to be made of used plastic bottles.

The village will include about 120 homes of different sizes. The design begins with building structures of steel(钢铁)which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is completeand electrical lines are put insidethe plastic walls are covered by concrete(混凝土)—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besidesthe material will keep the house 17 cooler than the temperature outsidewhich is the biggest advantage to people living inside.

The village is the work of Robert Bezeau with the purpose of setting up some environmental projects. Having started a recycling program in 2012during which a number of plastic bottles were collectedhe started to think how they could be put to use. Soon enoughhe decided to use them to build houses.

Over 10000 plastic bottles were used to build the first housewhich was completed late last year. The bottles were gained from the same recycling project that Robert had set up. The next home is expected to be biggerand will need more bottles. The special homes will be sold on request for anywhere between $149000 and $300000. The village will also feature its living environmentsuch as gardensminiparksand more.

22000 plastic bottles are thrown away around the world per second. While all these bottles clearly cannot be reused into homesthe project hopes to raise the attention of the waste. The village will also create an education center that will teach people from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as building materials.

If Confucius(孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But that doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past twenty years, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of(利用) ancient Chinese wisdom to make up the drawbacks(缺陷) Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

As the sun shone through Poltu’s window, he was already wide awake in his bed. He got up and ran straight to his study table. There, in an empty jam bottle, was the treasure. A colorful little butterfly. How difficult it had been to catch it in the backyard of his house. It had kept flying away from his grasp. But catch it he did. And now it was going to be part of his biology project in school.

The biology project required Poltu to submit the study of a living creature every month. Most of his classmates drew diagrams from their books as part of this exercise. But Poltu was going to do something different. He was going to present a live creature—this butterfly.

Poltu loved the different colours on the wings of the butterfly. Red, green and blue. How beautiful it looked when it fluttered the wings. Poltu had made a few holes on the cap of the bottle to let air pass through, and added tender leaves for the butterfly to nibble (小口的咬) on. He might have trapped the creature, but he cared for it.

Excited about displaying his exhibit to the biology teacher, Poltu dressed hurriedly, and left for school. His school was walking distance from his house. He took a short cut and when he arrived, the gate wasn’t wholly open yet.

He walked straight into his class, opened the bench window and placed the bottle on the windowsill. The golden rays of the sun streamed through the glass, on the delicate wings of the butterfly. Poltu’s butterfly looked simply gorgeous. In a few minutes, the area was full of boys, even from other classes, gazing fondly at it.

That day’s biology class was the most interesting in a long time. Pleased with Poltu’s initiative (主动性), the teacher asked everyone in the class to thank him as he made it possible for them to study a butterfly so closely. Poltu felt like a star for being treated like royalty.

On the way home, whatever small creature Poltu came across, he felt like putting into the bottle. But he checked himself as he wanted to give breathing space to his butterfly.

Most drinks stating that they are fruit flavored contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission."Shoppers need to check the labels before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be nonexistent," said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. "Food production is highly competitive.  1. It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked."Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberryflavored products sold in stores.2.Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.3.Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberryflavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial color1 s, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained ly no strawberries at all.4.Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading.5.Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said. "It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights."

A. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.

B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.

C. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.

D. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.

E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.

F. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.

G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.
