A travel journal is one of the best ways to keep a long voyage in memory. Many details that don’t seem important while you are writing your travel journal often turn out to be so memorable.

Get into the habit of writing your travel journal every day. 1. You may promise yourself that you will write later, but that almost never happens. Take a few minutes every day and put down what you have seen and heard. It doesn’t have to be long, just on a regular basis.

2.. There is a surprising amount of sitting around while you go traveling. You can always put down a few lines in your travel journal when you are on trains, waiting for planes, drying your laundry, or waiting in line.

At the beginning of your journal, write down the day, where you are, who you are with, maybe even the weather and what you eat. 3.. Years later when you read your journal, you will know exactly what you were doing on that day.

Focus on writing about how you feel. Listing facts and figures is fine but that isn’t why you traveled. A long journey is a time for self-reflection. Memories of these feelings disappear quickly with time. 4..

5.. Whenever you use a ticket for a train or a museum or a ride, tape the stubs(存根)to your journal. They are pieces of history from your journey. Years later you can look at the ticket stubs and see exactly what you were doing on a specific day and how much it cost.

A.Keep ticket stubs

B.Book your ticket in advance

C.These are the first details you tend to forget

D.You’d better write down as much as possible

E.Use your“down time”for your travel journal

F.When you are on a busy journey,it is easy to forget to write

G.Writing about those experiences while the memories are fresh is important.

The widespread use of Internet technology has made our lives easier but causes a big challenge to senior citizens (长者), who are not always comfortable with smartphones and so many new apps.

Only a few senior citizens are able to enjoy the benefits that new technologies offer. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of people aged 60 and above was 253.88 million in 2019, about 18.1% of China’s population. But only 23% of the senior citizens were able to use the Internet. That means more than three-fourths of the elderly are deprived (被剥夺) of the digital benefits.

Many senior citizens who can’t use smartphones are facing difficulties during this pandemic (流行病). Even with a smartphone in hand and Internet available, many of them still feel helpless. They don’t know how to call a taxi through the apps. There have been reports of many shops turning away elders who don’t know how to pay using smartphones, instead of letting them pay with cash. Worse still, as they don’t know how to get the Internet-based health code (健康码), they are refused to enter many public places. Presenting individual health code is part of the epidemic prevention (防疫) and control measures

New technologies become popular because they are often of great use in our daily lives. But many senior citizens, especially those living in the countryside or those whose grown-up children don’t live with them, are not able to use the Internet or smartphoneseither because of financial (财政的) problems or because they cannot learn new things beyond a certain point. The digital gap between the elderly and the young is becoming more obvious.

However, the senior citizens should not become a silent group deprived of digital benefits. It is our responsibility to help them bridge the digital gap, and be patient with them when they face difficulties catching up.

1.What do the statistics show in Paragraph 2?

A.There are a small number of senior citizens in China.

B.Only 23%of the senior citizens can use the computer.

C.Three fourths of the elders are unwilling to use smartphones.

D.Many elders fail to enjoy the convenience of the digital devices.

2.What does the author try to tell us?

A.Cash is no longer accepted in most shops.

B.It’s a must for everyone to have a health code.

C.Most elders need guidance on how to use the apps.

D.Many shops now refuse to offer service to the elderly.

3.The elderly can’t enjoy digital benefits for the following reasons EXCEPT_____.

A.their living areas

B.their financial conditions

C.their relationship with children

D.their difficulty in learning new things

4.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the current situation of the elderly?

A.Positive B.Worried C.Negative D.Indifferent

There has been a debate for some time that food can be addictive (上瘾的). Most  researchers may not agree with it. But this spring, experts on health discovered that for some, obesity (肥胖症) is “an addiction like smoking.” One month earlier, a lecture showed that food and drug addictions have much in common, especially in the way that both damage the parts of the brain involved in pleasure and self-control.

Earlier this year, some scientists carried out brain-scan studies on children who looked at pictures of chocolate milkshakes (奶昔) and later ate the milkshakes. Children who are regular ice-cream eaters may require more and more ice cream for the reward centers (奖励中枢) of their brains to tell that they are satisfied.

However, meditation and exercise can help the brain to overcome food addiction. Food addicts (嗜食者) should look for alternatives that still give pleasure — a fruit smoothie, for example, instead of ice cream.

Food addiction seems to be linked to the types of foods we’re eating. It’s easier for human body to deal with foods found in nature, not processed (加工的) foods. When a highly processed food is eaten, the body may go uncontrollable. Potatoes are not addictive, but when they are processed into chips, what happens? Products like chips are described as super-delicious foods. They were the right combination of something salty, sweet and fatty along with “mouth-feel.”

1.Why may regular ice-cream eaters need more ice-cream over time?

A.To stop being addicted to it. B.To meet the needs of the brain.

C.To control the centre of the brain. D.To satisfy the needs of the stomach.

2.What does the underlined word“alternatives”in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Replacements. B.Fruits. C.Methods. D.Drinks.

3.What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.Processed foods are healthier. B.People are born with food addiction.

C.Processed foods usually have a better taste. D.Processed foods are usually more expensive.

I had had an unusual relationship with my mother, who passed away in June 2019. From a young age, her life didn’t turn out as she’d hoped. As a result, anger and bitterness set in and developed deep roots. After a lifetime battle with depression (抑郁) and every kind of smoke- related illness, she began showing signs of dementia (痴呆). In 2014, we moved her into an assisted living facility (疗养院), which changed her life greatly.

The ladies there made her come down for lunch and dinner. They went to her room to bring her to bingo. They signed her up when they went out for an outing. Within weeks, she was changing and enjoying her new-found social life! And the dementia allowed her to forget her anger and bitterness. She started loving things again and even made us laugh. I got the mother of my childhood back that year. After she passed away, both staff and neighbours came in to see my sister and me. They cried. They told me how they would come in to see her on their days off. They told us how she waved every time they walked by and always had a compliment (赞许). But they didn’t stop there. They gave each of us a small wooden butterfly box filled with handwritten notes about my mom.

The mom of the final two years was not the mom I had for most of my life. And these women provided memories that I will keep in mind forever.

3.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A.My Memories of Mom

B.My Thankfulness to the Ladies

Do you have a firm and healthy relationship? Are you new to experiencing relationships? Well, let me give you some advice on how to have a healthy relationship with your partners.

Be an honest person with them. Don’t hide things from them and don’t lie. Getting them to trust you is the most important element in any relationship. If there’s no trust, there’s nothing there. 1..

2. Now, respect isn’t just simply treating them nicely. There’s a lot more to it. You have to learn to adjust to their liking. Basically, learn to study your partners’ moods, wants and needs. Don’t just think about yourself, but think about what your partners need out of it as well.

Make sure you are encouraging to your partners. Always be willing to help them and give them honesty and positive at the same time. Make them feel you are someone they can really count on and build a future with. 3..

Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. 4.. Laugh a lot with them, and joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but it’s the secret to a lot in life .Laughter keeps the relationship strong and lasting.

Make sure the communication is good. This usually goes along with trust, so always communicate how you feel even if it’s something that upsets you.5.. If they did something that made you unhappy, tell them about it in a respectful manner. It’s important to communicate this to them, not to keep it bottled up.

A.Make sure you give them respect.

B.Show them your personality.

C.Instead of screaming, talk to them.

D.Laughter is the key to happiness.

E.So please be honest and they’ll learn to open up to you.

F.Don’t start to neglect them and make them feel unwanted.

G.Your partners will be able to count on you when necessary.

It’s a warm summer afternoon. You’re cooking up the catch of the day over a campfire. Suddenly, a few raindrops fall on your arms, and before you know it, the sky is opened up. Then you hear what sounds like thunder in the distance. What should you do? Your tent is close by and would offer shelter(栖身地) from the pouring rain. There’s a campfire picnic shelter a few minutes down the path. And then you remember that your car is parked down the road. What’s your safest choice to make sure you and your families are safe?

It’s a common question for many hikers and campers, especially when they’re camping during summer months. Heading to your car is almost always the safest choice. Your tent and a picnic shelter will keep you dry, but they offer little or no protection against lightning. Your car, on the other hand, will keep you dry and protect you from lightning strikes. Protecting yourself against possible lightning strikes is very important; lightning kills an average of 62 people in the US each year. If you keep all of the windows and doors closed in your car, you’ll be able to return your campsite safely.

Of course, if you’re backpacking (背包旅游), not car camping, and you’re deep in the woods, your car won’t be a good choice. So, what should you do if your car is far away and there’s no other safe shelter nearby? First, you’ll have to make sure that tree branches or other objects don’t fall on you or your campsite. Then you’ll have to get in a safe position to avoid lightning, or flash conditions. What else should you do?

1.The passage wants to tell us    .

A.What’s camping B.How to live through a storm when camping

C.How to travel safely D.Car camping is the safest

2.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Young people like backpacking best.

B.Lightning is dangerous for campers.

C.Car camping is a good choice for deep woods.

D.Camping during summer is the most popular

3.To avoid lightning in a storm, you’d better    .

A.go into your tent quickly

B.cook up the catch of the day over a campsite

C.run into a campsite picnic shelter at once

D.get into your car and return to your campsite later

4.From the last paragraph we can infer    .

A.it is important to learn to protect oneself when camping

B.backpacking is not a good choice for campers

C.people should never camp deep in the woods

D.people should not go camping alone

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved reading crime and detective novels, so I guess it was pretty normal that I started writing them when I was older. However, my family is very big on having a traditional career and so when I said that I wanted to go to college and study writing, my parents told me that I couldn’t. They told me that I had to study for a degree so that I would achieve a career, and not something as risky as writing. I suppose I could have studied journalism, but I didn’t want to lose interest in writing because it would be something I would do every day for work, not for pleasure. I thought that teaching looked like a pretty good compromise, especially because of the long holidays. It was a good choice: by the time I was twenty-five, I’d already finished two novels and had an agent.

To be honest, I never meant to keep my being a crime writer a secret or anything, and my friends have always known. One of the reasons most people don’t know is because my agent told me that my name Hazel sounded too much like a romance novelist for older women. She suggested Brooke Lane and I thought, “Well, if you think it’ll make me successful, okay,” I’d totally forgotten about it until I walked into school one day and saw one of my workmates reading my novel. I asked her some questions about it, and it was so clear that she had no idea that I’d written itshe even offered to lend it to me after she’d finished! Of course, sometimes I wonder what my students would think if they knew that their teacher was going home on the weekend to write about murders and dead bodies, but I think my parents probably did me a favor: my teaching job keeps me in touch with the real world.

1.Hazel is probably    .

A.a teacher and writer B.a journalist

C.a teacher and artist D.an agent

2.The underlined words “is very big on” in the passage most probably mean    .

A.to give no advice B.to misunderstand something

C.to have more experiences D.to like something very much

3.From the passage we can know that Hazel   .

A.told her workmates about her writing novels B.would like to write something for teaching

C.accepted Brooke Lane as her pen name D.agreed to study journalism for a degree

4.Hazel finally realized that her parents’ advice on her career was    .

A.helpful B.exciting C.disappointing D.risky

Culture shock occurs when people have been suddenly thrown into a new culture. Newcomers may be anxious because they don’t speak the language. Neither do they know the customs or understand the people’s behavior in daily life.

Quite often the visitor find that “yes” may not always mean “yes”, that friendliness does not necessarily mean friendship, or that statements that appear to be serious are really intended as jokes. The foreigners may be unsure as when to shake hands, when to start conversations, or how to approach a stranger. The idea of culture shock helps explain feeling of puzzlement and confusion.

Language problems do not lead to all the setbacks that people feel. When one has lost everything that was once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system, knowing how to register(注册,登记) for university classes, or knowing how to make friends, difficulties in coping with the new society may arise.

When an individual enters a strange culture, he or she feels like a fish out of water. Newcomers feel at times that they do not belong to the culture and feel deserted by the native members of the culture. When this happens, visitors may want to refuse everything about the new environment and may glorify and sing their own praises of the positive aspects of their own culture. On the other side, more visitors may sneeze at their native country by rejecting its value and instead choosing to approve of the value of the new country. This may occur as an attempt to accept the new culture in order to be taken in by the people in it.

At this very moment you’re thirsty and hunting for something to drink. So you start walking towards the drinks machine at school. As you drink you hear your teacher say those frightening words: “Could I see you for a moment in the classroom, please?”

You can almost feel your blood pressure rise as you walk to your English class. She’s always picking on you. What can it be this time? You think of the test you did last Friday. Now your mind is racing, your heart is pounding, and your forehead is pouring with sweat. In situations like this you will often feel like running away but you may also feel like hitting someone on the nose.

Your teacher asks you to go into the class. “Here it comes,” you think. But what you hear is: “Well done. Your test was excellent.” You can hardly believe your ears.

Our fight or flight response is designed to protect us from tigers that would have once hidden in the woods around us, threatening(威胁) our survival. At times when our survival is threatened, there is no greater response to have on our side. When activated(刺激), the response causes stress hormones to pump through our body.

When we face very real dangers to our survival, it is invaluable. However, few of the “tigers” we face in our lives cause a serious physical threat to our existence. They cause us no end of stress, triggering(引发) the full activation of our fight or flight response. They tend to cause us to overreact to the situation in a counterproductive (事与愿违的) way. It is counterproductive to hit someone (the fight response) or run away (the flight response).

By recognizing the symptoms, we can begin to take steps to handle the stress overload. By learning to recognize the signals of fight or flight activation, we can avoid reacting excessively (过度地) to events and fears that are not life threatening. In doing so, we use this extra energy to help ourselves, borrowing the beneficial effects in order to change our emotional environment and deal productively with our fears, thoughts and potential dangers.

The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.

David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how a diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized (工业化), population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.

The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk of noninfectious(不传染的) diseases like diabetes (糖尿病) and heart disease.

Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on.

And, a diet bad for human beings is also bad for the environment. As the world's population grows, more forests and tropical areas will become farmlands for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now.

Mr. Tillman calls the link among the diet, the environment and human health “a trilemma” — a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.

1.According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from ______.

A.transportation B.developing countries

C.agriculture D.developed countries

2.David Tillman believes that ______.

A.the diet, the environment and human health are closely connected

B.the Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializes

C.people in tropical areas are more likely to have diabetes

D.traditional diets are more balanced than the Western diet

3.The main purpose of the passage is to ______.

A.call on us to protect the environment

B.warn us of the risk of the Western diet

C.remind us of the importance of health

D.advise us to have a balanced diet
