My parents and I visited my uncle in Seattle on last July. My favorite experience was our trip to Mount Rainer, an volcano near Seattle. Before we left, my uncle gave us hats to protect us from getting sunburned, I supposed that it will be very hot. When we drove up the mountain, I found the top covering with snow and ice! My uncle led me to a small path to increase our chances of seeing wildlife. Suddenly there appeared a field that small wild flowers grew up through the snow. Little animal stood still; tiny birds rose highly into the air. It was the most beautiful sight that Id never seen

Take care of your spine(脊柱)

The spine stands at the center of your health, providing your body with structure and support. It also contains your spine cord, a massive collection of nerves conveying electric signals from the rest of your body to your brain1.

Maintaining good posture( 姿势) is one of the most important things you can do to keep your spine healthy. Proper posture means standing or sitting while keeping your spine straight, except for its natural curves. Posture comes into play even when you are asleep. Sleeping on your side puts less stress on your spine than most other positions. 2. . Especially if you work at a desk most of the day, it's important to get up and stretch regularly.

3.Stretch can help the muscles around your spine relax and allow bones to shift into better arrangement. Strength exercises like pushups(俯卧撑) can also help by strengthening the muscles around your spine. However, don’t overdo the exercise, as repeated motions can strain the muscles around your spine.

Finally, your diet affects the health of your spine because many vitamins are necessary for bones and nerves. In particular, vitamins B and D are essential to keep bones healthy, so you may want to consider taking a supplement.4., so it is also helpful to do some of the back exercise outside.

Many of the actions necessary to keep your spine healthy are identical to those used to preserve your health in other ways.5.

A. However, the latter is also absorbed from sunlight.

B. Staying still for too long can be hard on your back.

C. So protect your back, the rest of the body will benefit.

D. Protecting your spine with yoga is also a necessary step.

E. Try the following exercises to keep your spine more flexible.

F. Exercise is also an important factor in the health of your spine.

G. So you should take the following factors into account to have a healthy spine.

Since App Store was set up, it has been selling consumers one simple thing choice. Whether you wanted to play games, read the news, or do a thousand other things, there was something for whatever you desired.

Then something funny happened. Logging into the App Store today is like going into a shopping mall with only a coupon(优惠券) for one thing: There’s so much choice; it might be easier to give up than to choose.

It isn’t consumers who are burdened, though. Too much content of all kinds also has economic effects. When countless choices are available, it causes pressure, pushing prices down and driving us a bit crazy.

So what is the way forward? It may well be to turn less choice itself to the marketing strategy. There are already signs that this is happening. Firstly content companies are looking to prevent their offerings from getting lost in the tons of stuff. Most obvious is Disney, which is planning to open its own streaming service next year. The point is to narrow the focus so that those seeking Disney cartoons will have one place to go, rather than being around various services.

Yet if that represents a careful first step, there are more extreme options too. Consider the idea of a wine club: from tens of thousands of bottles each year, subscribers pay someone to select the most interesting ones. Perhaps what comes next for digital content is similar-carefully selected offerings from trusted sources that put choices in the hands of someone else in order to get rid of the anxiety of choosing.

Up to now, too much choice in digital media has only one solution: the algorithm(运算法则). But we ve seen the trouble with algorithms on You Tube They feed you only what you’ve already said you like, not things you may not know you re into. Worse, they have a tendency to serve up disturbing content he way forward cant simply be more or better algorithms.

Instead, it's time for digital companies to start thinking about how to put limits on things: on how much we can use a device, or what we are available to choose from.

As we move further into the digital revolution, what people ask for is clear: Less.

1.What will too much choice of content on the market result in?

A. The shutdown of companies    B. The anxiety of consumers

C. The poor quality of products    D. The slowdown of economy

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraphs 4 and 5?

A. Content companies should withdraw their offerings online

B. Content companies should post their offerings on App Store

C. Content companies adopt different methods to narrow the consumers focus

D. Content companies open their own streaming services on You Tube

3.How do algorithms probably respond to consumers needs?

A. They make a better choice for them    B. They help to remove disturbing content

C. They change their interest in digital media    D. They fail to offer what they possibly like

4.What is the authors attitude towards limiting the choice consumers have

A. Approving.    B. Skeptical

C. Opposing.    D. Neutral

Canada is a bilingual country with "co-official " languages. English and French enjoy equal status as the official languages of all government agencies in Canada. This means that the public has the right to communicate with and receive services from government in either English or French. Government employees have the right to work in the official language of their choice in certain bilingual regions.

Like the United States, Canada started as a colony. Beginning in the 1500s it was part of New France but later became a British colony after the Seven Years’  War. As a result, the Canadian government recognized the languages of both colonizers: France and England. The Constitution (宪法)Act of 1867 admitted the use of both languages in federal courts. Years later, Canada strengthened its commitment to bilingualism when it passed the Official Languages Act of 1969, which reconfirmed the constitutional origins of its co official languages.

Recognition of both English and French protects the rights of all Canadians. Among other benefits, the 1969 Act recognized the Canadian citizens should be able to access federal laws and government documents, whether their native language was French or English. The general law also requires that consumer products feature bilingual packaging throughout the country.

The Canadian government is committed to advancing the equality and the use of English and French and provides support to the development of English and French minority communities. However, the reality is that most Canadians speak English, and of course, many Canadians speak another language entirely.

Although the federal government theoretically guarantees bilingual services in all areas, there are many regions where English is the clear majority language so the government does not offer services in French in those regions. Canadians use the phrase "where numbers justify "to indicate whether a local populations language requires bilingual services from the government.

While many Canadians are bilingual in English and French, Statistics. Canada finds that over 200 other languages were reported as a language spoken by its people. About two-thirds of the respondents who spoke one of these languages also spoke either English or French

1.Why are two official languages accepted in Canada?

A. The language-using tradition caused by Canada's colonial history

B. The theoretical commitment made by Canadian courts in the past

C. The welcome attitude towards people coming from all over the world

D. The mastery of two languages of Canadians because of school education

2.What is the current situation of official languages in Canada?

A. People speaking English are superior because of their access to federal laws

B. Federal governments have to provide bilingual services to all citizens in Canada

C. French minority communities are given more support due to their language-using history

D. There are more people speaking English than French in some parts of Canada

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A. The legal court usage of French and English was established in Canada in 1969.

B. Some Canadians in certain districts might speak neither English nor French

C. Either French or English should be used on products in Canada according to the law

D. English has gained superior legal position to French because of bigger users in Canada

4.Which is the best title of the passage?

A. The Official Languages in Canada    B. Canada, a Multiple-language Land

C. Balancing English and French in Canada    D. Advancing English and French in Canada

I’m a student in my third year at Robert Gordon University, but I also work 35 hours a week at Sainsbury's to make ends meet.

I constantly have to force myself to stay awake, and to be alert, whatever it takes. The work I do at Sainsbury's is very physical like stacking(fi3 ik)shelves. I am lucky because the amount I lift at work is nothing compared with the weight I lift in the gym. I know I have the strength to bear it.

I am originally from Nigeria. I came here when I was seven. Money was always tight. My parents gave me everything I needed, but there was no money for luxuries. I worked hard at school though and, with the help of professors, I got the best A-level grades in my class.

Unfortunately, though I had applied for "settled "British residential status the Home Office waited until I was in sixth form to approve my application. That meant I was not eligible for a student loan. The only way I could afford to go to university was that I got a job that would pay for all my living costs and my parents paid for my tuition fees.

I don’t have much time to socialize because of my job. Ideally, Id like to have more time to study so I can excel at my course. Yes, I have a lot on my plate, but working hard isnt new for me. Growing up, my parents cultivated in me the importance of working hard for what I want in life.

My dream is to get a job in the NHS. But now, Im just focused on trying to get the best grades I can. Whenever I find life hard, I tell myself this is about my future.

1.Why does the author work long hours and sometimes overtime every week?

A. To pay for his own living expenses    B. To pay for his tuition fees

C. To prove his ability to earn money    D. To help his parents pay off the debts

2.What does the underlined word "eligible "in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. Responsible    B. Anxious

C. Qualified    D. Accessible

3.Which of the following can NOT be used to describe the author?

A. Persistent    B. Diligent

C. Sociable    D. Ambitious

4.Which proverb can best summarize the passage?

A. Actions speak louder than words    B. God help those who help the themselves

C. A penny saved is a penny earned    D. Where there is life, there is hope

I was about to go back home after school while I heard someone crying nearby. I looked around and found the boy sitting on the ground. I went up to him and asking gently what had happened. The boy looked at me, still crying, pointed out to a ball in a deep hole and told me everything. I decided lend him a hand, and the ball was out of my reach. Where could I get the ball? I thought it over and then had an idea. I quickly fetched some bottles of water and poured them into the hole. With the water rising, the ball floated up. The boy got the ball happy and expressed his thank for my offer.

Many years ago, people relied on the sun, the moon and stars to find their way around. Later, the compass was introduced. And now, we have satnav(卫星导航)systems to guide us. A satnav system uses groups of satellites to show the user’s location. They send information to a receiver, such as a smartphone, to show us where we are.

The earliest built satnav system is the Global Positioning Satellite System, which belongs to the US. Then there is Russia’s Global Navigation Satellite systemthe European Union’s Galileo and China’s own satellite navigation system, Beidou.

On October 18, 2017, an ARJ21-700 plane, which was the first domestically(国内地) produced jet equipped with the Beidou navigation system, successfully completed a test flight. The results showed the performance of the system developed by China matches that of similar systems produced abroad, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.

Since its introduction in 2000, the Beidou navigation system has been increasing numbers of applications linked to everyday life, from shared bikes to farming.

When it comes to shared bikes, smart locks that support Beidou chips offer more accurate positioning than others, making it easier to find a bike.

Farmers can use Beidou-enabled tractors to plow(犁)the soil and use unmanned aircraft with Beidou to sow seeds, which can improve efficiency and make better use of resources. Beidou’s farming applications have spread from Heilongjiang Province to Beijing, Liaoning, Shanxi, Hubei and other regions across China.

With its many uses, the Beidou navigation system is even playing a big role in the Belt and Road Initiative(一带一路). “To date, the Beidou system has covered most parts of the Asia-Pacific region, as well as countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road,” said Yang Changfeng, chief designer of the Beidou system.

Today, there are more than 20 Beidou satellites above our heads, and China plans to launch even more this year to expand the Beidou network to better serve the Belt and Road Initiative.

“As Beidou expands its overseas reach, it will be increasingly popular in the logistics(物流) industry,” said Miao Qianjun, Secretary General of the navigation services association. “Ships, for example, can use it to position themselves while sailing across oceans to European countries, no longer limited to Southeast Asian regions in the near future.

1.What is the purpose of the first two paragraphs?

A. To compare some modern satnav systems.

B. To describe the benefits of satnav systems.

C. To tell us how satnav systems were created.

D. To introduce some satnav systems and their functions.

2.What can we know about the Beidou navigation system according to the article?

A. It was used successfully in a new jet plane.

B. It is more powerful than other satnav systems.

C. It was introduced to China on October, 2017.

D. It wasn’t used in our everyday life until recently.

3.According to the article, the Beidou navigation system is already widely used for _______.

A. plowing the soil and sowing seeds

B. improving the efficiency of network

C. producing more smart locks for shared bikes

D. navigating ships across oceans to European countries

4.What is Miao Qianjun’s attitude toward the future of the Beidou system?

A. Worried.    B. Casual.

C. Positive.    D. Doubtful.

A primary school in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province has announced it no longer requires parents to sign their children’s homework, which was aimed at getting parents to supervise(监督) their children after school. China Youth Daily comments: Putting an end to the requirement that parents sign off on the homework of their children eases the burden on many parents, as otherwise they would have to do primary school homework after a hard day’s work. But there are worries that if parents stop having to sign off on their children’s homework, the children will not get good grades.

However, the most effective way for children to study is to develop their willingness to learn and do their own studies. When doing homework, students practice and hopefully apply what they have learned. It is true that teachers are supposed to check students’ homework and identify their mistakes. But some parents correct their children’s mistakes by themselves when signing off on it.

It is the duty of students to do their homework, be responsible for their studies and correct their mistakes. Parents’ supervising their homework, checking their answers and dealing with the harder problems will only make children less aware of their mistakes and encourage them to wait for their parents’ help when they face any problems.

Children have to manage their own learning and develop the ability to study by themselves, as competence will not be achieved if a student simply repeats strict tasks in which he is assisted in school by teachers and at home by parents.

A delayed satisfaction experiment conducted by Walter Mischel in the 1960s proved that children with better self-discipline(自律) performed better in their studies and interpersonal relationships.

There is little doubt that parents’ supervision can make children’s homework better. But it does not give children the chance to practice their ability to solve problems independently.

1.Why does the author mention the primary school’s announcement in the first paragraph?

A. To express his doubts.    B. To introduce the topic.

C. To present an argument.    D. To clarify his writing purpose.

2.In the author’s opinion, stopping signing kids’ homework mainly aims to __________.

A. ease the burden on many parents.

B. help children get good grades.

C. increase the kids’ awareness of being responsible for their studies.

D. shift(转移) the responsibility of supervising kids’ homework on to teachers.

3.Which of the following can be an effect caused by parents’ stopping signing off?

A. Children’s grades will absolutely decrease.

B. Children will lose confidence when facing any problems.

C. Children will simply repeat rigid tasks so as to practice themselves.

When I was a boy there were no smart phones. Computers were something you saw on STAR TREK(星际航行)and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my house were the nature ready-made playgrounds.

I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake and slowly walking around it. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old, one-lane, dirt road that I had never seen before. I immediately set out to travel it. It was full of holes and muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.

I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear to turn around and head back home but I was stubborn and even a bit stupid, so I walked on.

The dirt road give way to a rock one and then a paved one, yet there was still neither a car nor a house in sight. My legs were getting tired. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road in the dark of night, but I was sure it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.

I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve(弯曲处) and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. My heart leapt up! I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. I knew the way home! It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.

I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said, “All roads lead Home.” This is true. In this life all roads no matter what their twists(弯曲) and turns are can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on Earth. They can lead us to our homes in our heart, if we can insist.

How to Discover Your Talent

Talent tends to refer to that inborn skill that everyone seems to be born with. 1.. It’s good to try and identify and practice that skill.

Revisit your childhood. A good way to figure out where your talents lie is to go back to your childhood. 2.. This is often the time when you had plans that weren’t limited by what people tend to think of as ‘reality’.

Consider what it is you do when you lose track of time. One of the chief things you can do is focus on what you love to do so much that you have a tendency to forget everything else for a while. 3.. You might have to research a bit deeper into the things you enjoy to discover what makes you feel satisfied.

4.. Sometimes, when you’re having difficulty seeing clearly, it’s good to get an outside opinion. Your friends and family members know you well and they should be able to offer you some insights into the areas they think you’re talented in.

Try new things. Especially if you’re not sure what your talents might be, you should get out and try new things. This way you’re more likely to hit on what it is that you’re really good at and that really makes you happy. 5.. In your quest for your own talent you should look into the talents of other people.

A. Consider what you loved to do as a child

B. Ask others for better advice

C. You can use your talents in the service of kindness

D. Focus on the areas that you’re less talented in

E. Not all talents are going to be super obvious

F. Observe and enjoy the talents of other people

G. It’s true that having a talent can help you in life

A small robot may help children who are recovering from long-term illnesses in the hospital or at home. These children may feel isolated from their friends and classmates. The robot takes their place at school. Through the robot, the children can hear their teachers and friends. They also can take part in class from wherever they are recovering.

Anyone who has a long-term illness knows that recovering at home can be lonely. This can be especially true for children. They may feel left out. Now, these children may have a high-tech friend to help feel less lonely. That friend is a robot. The robot is called AV1. AV1 goes to school for a child who is homebound while recovering from a long-term illness. And the child’s school friends must help. They carry the robot between classes and place the robot on the child’s desk.

A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot. The co-founders of No Isolation are Karen Dolva and Marius Aabel. Dolva explains how the robot AV1 works. She says, from home, the child uses an iPad or a phone to start the robot. Then they use the same device to control the robot’s movements. At school, the robot becomes the eyes, ears and voice of the child.

‘So, it sits at the child’s desk in the classroom and the child uses an iPad or a phone to start it, control its movement with touch, and talk through it.’

The student can take part in classroom activities from wherever they are recovering whether at home or from a hospital bed. The robot is equipped with speakers, microphones and cameras that make communication easy.

During the past Spring Festival, many children may have received red packets from their families. But Xing Pu, a 40-year-old economist, is asking the government to give red packets to every Chinese citizen.

Xing suggested the government give out 1,000 yuan to each Chinese since the government income has increased rapidly in recent years. He said his suggestion would allow everyone to directly enjoy the fruits of the country’s economic success, help the lower-income groups deal with rising prices and increase consumption around the country.

Recent years have seen the government carry out a series of pro-poor (扶贫) and pro-rural (惠农) policies, including increasing spending on public health-care and cutting down the agricultural tax. But the lower-income group still needs more help.

Xing said he has borrowed many ideas from practices in countries like the United States and Singapore. Earlier this year, the governments of the two nations offered cash handouts (救济) to their citizens. As for in China, ‘We can even encourage the rich to donate their 1,000 yuan red packet to the poor,’ said Xing.

Although Xing’s suggestion has gained wide support among ordinary Chinese on the Internet, many other economists criticized it as unpractical. ‘To better use the increase of money, handing out money is not a solution that holds good for all time. It could be better to improve the public service or cut the price of energy use in daily life,’ said Qiao Xinsheng, an economic professor.

3.Xing Pu’s ideas of giving red packets to every Chinese citizen mainly came from ______.

A. children receiving red packets from their families

B. the US and Singapore governments offering cash handouts to their citizens

C. the government’s increasing spending on public health care

D. the rising prices in the country

4.According to Qiao Xinsheng, what is better than giving out money?

A. Cutting the price of energy use in daily life.

B. Supplying food to everyone every day.

C. Controlling the rising of prices.

D. Increasing the government income.
