Habits to Make You a Happy Person

Habits remain the same even if everything around us is changing fast. 1. So they are beneficial to our achievements.

However, positive habits are hard to develop. People fail and make mistakes when making changes and trying new things. 2. That's just life and nothing to feel upset about. What you are supposed to do next is trying again, and develop the positive habits gradually. Here are three little habits that can make a big difference in your life.

3. How you take care of yourself will make a difference in the quality of your life. The tiny habits of caring for your body and spirit will give you the energy to achieve your goals-plus increase your well-being.

Don’t forget to forgive others. Forgiving takes you one step closer to your happiness. Make a habit of not holding hatred(仇恨). It does nothing but hurts your own happiness and success. 4. Instead, you will be more likely to get relief and succeed.

Encourage yourself to be curious(好奇的). There is no stage in life when we can’t be learning something valuable. 5.. And as long as you follow your heart and your curiosity, you won't miss out on learning. The habit of being curious means you will always benefit from life.

A. Try to be healthy.

B. Never forget to take notes.

C. Trying things again will bring you happiness.

D. Forgiving yourself doesn't mean you are a loser.

E. As long as you live, there will be something to learn.

F. They will probably not succeed the first time they do it.

G. Good habits can bring us happiness and help us to achieve our goals.

My sister and I were flying by ourselves from our home in Kansas to a summer camp in Minnesota. Our plane had a two-hour stop at the airport in Omaha, Nebraska. A flight attendant took us to a souvenir shop, where a toy airplane looked just like the plane my sister and I were flying on. I really wanted that airplane. I had $10 and the plane cost $8. I had no idea what I needed to buy at camp, but I bought the plane anyway. When we reached the camp, I discovered that there were no showers! Instead, we bathed in a lake every night. I needed to buy special soap because the regular soap I brought had chemicals that could harm the fish. The special soap cost $4 at the camp store. However, I had only $2 left.

What upset me was that I couldn’t get clean without the soap, which was soon found by my teacher, Sally. I had to tell her that I had spent most of my money on a toy airplane. She laughed and explained to me that a budget was necessary and it was a plan for spending money to help make sure you set aside enough for things you need, like soap, before you buy fun things, like toys.

Sally gave me one of her extra(额外的) bottles of special soap. When I returned home, I decided to budget. I spent several weeks writing down everything I bought, just to get an idea of how I was already spending my money. Then I made my first weekly budget. My budget wasn’t always the same each week. For some weeks, I would have more in my “Money In” account because I did some jobs around the house. Once summer vacation started, I didn’t need to buy school lunches, so I had extra money to go to the neighborhood swimming pool or to give to the town animal shelter.

Budgeting was hard, sometimes. Whatever week it was, I always made sure that “Money In” equaled “Save and Spend.” That’s called making ends meet, and it’s how you make sure that the money you have will always be enough to cover your plans to spend and save.

1.Why did Sally give the writer one bottle of her special soap?

A. The writer’s usual soap did harm to his skin.

B. The writer needed to take showers at the camp.

C. The writer turned to Sally for it to get clean.

D. The writer’s money couldn't cover the special soap.

2.What did the writer learn about at the camp?

A. Spending and saving money.    B. Getting along with others.

C. Making more money.    D. Planning his daily life.

3.What can be the best title for the text?

A. My Summer Camp    B. My Weekly Budget

C. My Special Soap    D. My Lonely Flight

In Europe, there is no escape for those who do not appreciate art and architecture(建筑). It is a heaven for people who want to feel like they have been transported to famous historical time periods from America. For me, Europe was a complete contrast from America. London and France had a more royal feel than New York, and Rome felt more ancient. I wasn’t just on a different continent; it felt like I was in a different century.

My parents and I visited London, Paris and Rome this summer in celebration of the end of my high school experience. It was supposed to be a break from a life as busy as a bee in New York, the constant stress, the crowded subway rides, and the weary body that had accompanied me for the last four years. It was an opportunity to appreciate Europe the way I couldn’t do it just by reading history books.

My favorite parts of London were the Tower of London and the Churchill War Rooms. As a site of past executions(刑场), the Tower of London displayed punishing devices from the 16th and 17th century and told stories of various members of the royal family who had ever been imprisoned in the tower, some even imprisoned by their own family members when they were seen as a threat to the crown. Besides that, I also got to see the royal family’s crown jewels, amazingly beautiful.

The Churchchill War Rooms, though very different from the Tower of London, were also spellbinding from a historic perspective. I am not a history fan, but I enjoy museums, and I took fancy in the Churchchill Museum inside the War Rooms that detailed the events of Churchchill’s life and World War II. Everything I saw in it built up his life from his childhood to his last years, creating a three-dimensional Churchchill in my mind who was a person just like myself. He longed for more, he made mistakes, he experienced loneliness and sadness. But he had also done some remarkable things like uniting Britain during World War II.

Our rewarding trip ended in Rome a couple of days later.

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在文后第91100小题的空格里填上适当的单词,注意每空1个单词。

Many of us have someone in our lives that has absolutely everything. Buying a gift for that special person can prove quite stressful. Here are a few points aimed at making this challenge a little bit easier.

Buying that hard-to-find gift can have you wandering the malls for hours on end with little or no luck. Before starting such a shopping journey, think carefully about what that person might really enjoy instead of hoping the perfect gift will miraculously(奇迹般地 ) appear. Think about what is happening in their lives at the moment Have they recently experienced a major life event. taken up a new hobby, or planned a trip? Think about how your gin can contribute to a these events.

Have you ever found that perfect Christmas gift for someone in July, but decided to waif and buy it later? If you think it's a good gift, buy it then. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy that perfect present. Chances are that you'll either forget what that gift was or it won’t be available when you go to get it later. Last-minute shopping is rather stressful and usually doesn’t have the desired results.

Anything you can buy at a retail store these days can also be bought on the Internet. Better still, you can find special gifts that you normally cant find at the mall. Search for special gift ideas and you'll be amazed at the things that you may never have thought of before. For example, find out what their favorite toy or book was when they were a child and see if you can find it for sale on an auction site(拍卖现场).

Spend some time with the person and get a better idea of their interests. They may mention that they've needed something for the moment but just haven't got around to getting it. Or maybe they've lost or broken something that they really miss. Maybe they're still using something from the past that needs updating.

If all else fails, there are always gift cards. Rather than just give the gift card, however, be a little creative. Make a game out of it such as wrapping the card in a series of larger boxes so it takes a while to get to it rather than just having them open an envelope. Another choice is to include a gift card with some theatre tickets.

When I was eight, I got my first pair of glasses. Far from being made fun of at school, the only struggle I got was endless requests to try on my new glasses. Hearing about what happened at school, my father once looked at me and asked whether I had pretended to be the blindness just to look like Harry Potter?

With my strange hair and glasses, I did nothing to avoid it, either. The Harry Potter books were the great pop cultural event of my generation, who began reading again. My school librarian, both confused and annoyed by us Potter fans, dealt with fights over the schools few old copies by setting a new rule: Harry Potter could be borrowed for only three days, instead of the whole week of borrowing period every other title was allowed.

In the 20 years since the first book arrived on shelves, publishers and parents have been asking what has made J.K. Rowling's books so loved. It is better to look at the influence they have had on their readers. Yes, the books were about a boy taking on a dark and powerful enemy in the magical world, but they were also about love defeating hate, determination and choosing" between what is easy and what is right". Rowling’s entire magical characters were all people we want to be.

I grew up with Harry and together we became children with our own opinions, teens easy to get angry and young adults thinking of everything as normal. When the final book came out in 2007.I read it for 12 hours without a break and cried as I finished it. I felt something sad: the end of Harry’s story signaled the end of my childhood. I was suddenly aimless. Meanwhile, my now Potter-mad father walked impatiently nearby, waiting for the proper moment to take the book away from his daughter.

Harry Potter did shape my generation. As a girl who grew up mostly in peacetime, many of the ideas I found in these books were ones we had never come across before. The magical world’s terrible treatment of non-human beings was the first description of slavery I knew. The treatment of Harry’s teacher Remus Lupin, who hides his condition at work, is a metaphor(比喻) for the shame surrounding those who suffer from AIDS. And all settings like this may have real-world reflections .A study found that teenage Harry Potter readers showed more tolerance (包容) towards those who were suffering. Is it possible that Jeremy Corbyn's popularity among the young had anything to do with their literary education? Is it possible that Harry Potter, in the 20 years he has been with us, has inspired a generation to be more empathetic(感同身受), welcoming and socially open- minded than those before it? We will see If not, at least my glasses are still cool.

3.What can we learn about the Harry Potter books from Paragraph 3?

A. The book has been the most popular one among all the books for twenty years.

D. The book has had such great influence on the readers that they all want to be magical persons.

Teenagers in America know that they’ll possibly need technical skills to find good jobs, but a new survey reveals that interest in technology-related careers may be decreasing.

The percentage of boys aged 13 to 17 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math ---or STEM ---careers dropped from 36 percent in 2017 to 24 percent this year, according to a survey by Junior Achievement USA. The amount of girls interested in STEM careers stayed unchanged at II percent.

But the 1, 000 survey participants still named technology as one of two key skills that will be necessary to prepare them for their future careers.

"Kids don' t understand how technology can be applied to careers in addition to computers, and maybe robotics, "said Tammera L. Holmes, president of aviation consulting firm AeroStar Consulting(航空资询公司).“That’s all they know, so they can’t really translate that interest to career pathways. "

When Holmes was in high school, her mom sent her to an event that featured (以......为专题 )the pilots from World War II. One of the pilots took her for a ride and let her take the wheel. immediately that was the career for me. " she said.

Women remain outnumbered(超过) by men in fields like technology. For people working to increase the number of women in these areas, the lack of growth in girls interest in STEM careers is concerning.

Teenage girls are more interested than their male classmates in running after careers in which they can help others, said Ed Grocholski from Junior Achievement. Even with all the programs aimed at increasing girls' interest in STEM, "I don’t think we really talk that much about how we improve people’s lives through STEM, " Grocholski said.

Society needs to do better at making those connections for kids, said Katherine Latham, founder of an engineering firm. She used civil engineering as an example of a career that will continue to be important.

However, the fact that students know they will need tech skills in their future careers is encouraging.

The second skill they said they need is relationship-building.

"That's going to be the new type of engineers, " Latham said.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Some successful of kids searching tech careers.

B. Reasons behind teenagers decreasing interest in tech careers.

C. The difference in choice of jobs between boys and girls in America.

D. The popularity of tech careers among kids and its reasons.

2.What is the reason behind kid’s losing interest in tech careers?

A. They see tech careers as boring.

B. They find tech skills less important than before.

C. They don' t think tech careers can bring rewards

D. They can’t connect their tech interest with future careers.

3.What can we learn from Grocholski's words?

A. STEM careers have nothing to do with people' s lives.

B. Teenage girls are interested in running after STEM careers.

C. The relationship between STEM careers and the improvement of people’s lives isn’t explained enough.

D. Teenagers don' t know how to improve people’s lives through STEM.

4.What aroused Holmes’ interest in her career?

A. A summer camp for pilots.

B. Her parents' wish for her.

C. A report about the life of pilots

D. Her flight experience with a pilot.

5.According to Grocholski, teenage girls are more interested in careers that____.

A. can make them look attractive

B. can make friends with other people

C. can make people’s lives better

D. are different from those of their parents

People in developed countries are increasingly suffering from illnesses resulting from overeating. While starvation and hunger are still big problems in many poor countries in the world, more than 25 percent of the population in America and other western countries are obese. This doesn’t just mean you are a little bit fat. It means you are more than 20 kilos overweight.

Dr. John Colon from Ohio State University says the problem is only going to get worse.”As more women have gone out to work, you find that parents in general have less time to spend on preparing food. That’s not just cooking, but also planning what to eat, doing the shopping and buying the fresh food. Families, therefore, increasingly rely on ready-made and frozen meals, which tends to be high in fat and contain a lot of additives(materials added to food to improve its taste) and sugar. The other thing is that parents seem to feel guilty about not spending so much time with their kids, so they tend to give more quickly to children’s demands for things like sweets and chocolate.”

Ben Brown. who is a British Member of Parliament, blames the big food companies. He wants to ban any food advertising that is aimed at children. "The problem is that these companies spend millions of pounds selling food to children. It's all crisps (薯片) in the shape of dinosaurs and chocolate in the shape of Mickey Mouse. I mean__what's going to be more fun to an sight-year-old ---an ice cream with a free toy or an apple?"

One food company thinks it has an answer to this: it has invented cheese-flavored cabbage and chocolate-flavored carrots. It developed the "Whacky Veg" with money donated by a cancer research charity, which found that a diet containing lots of fruit and vegetables helps reduce cancer. However, today’s sweet-toothed kids need to be bribed(贿赂)into a healthy diet, and will only cat their greens if they taste different.

1.The underlined word "obese" in Paragraph 1 probably means____.

A. Fit    B. slim

C. overweight    D. unhealthy

2.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?

A. Food companies sell too much food to children.

B. Food advertising is responsible for the overeating problem of children.

C. An eight-year-old boy prefers an ice cream to a free toy.

D. Children like crisps in the shape of dinosaurs and chocolate in the shape of Mickey Mouse.

3.In order to solve the overeating problem,___ .

A. parents should bribe their children

B. green food should be invented for the children

C. parents should force their children to eat more vegetables and fruit

D. food companies should invent healthy food with special taste

4.What does the passage intend to tell us?

A. To warn us of the danger of overeating.

B. To tell us that most people in developed countries are overweight.

C. To show us that food companies are responsible for the overeating problem.

D. To report the overeating problem in developed countries and its possible causes and solutions.

I'm very glad to hear from you.In your letter, you said you suffer from depression because of the heavy load of study and didnt know what to get rid of it.Therefore,I am writing to offer you some suggestion.

First of all,it is quite common of high school students to feel depressed sometimes. What really matters is you should face your problem and make up your mind to settle it.The most effectively way is to turn to your teachers for help.He will surely provide you with a useful and practical advice.Besides, take an active part in sports or youll feel more energetic than before.Hang out with friends is also a good way to relax yourself.

I hope my suggestions can be of some help to you.

Yours

Li Hua
