Have you ever heard of the phrase “we just can’t communicate”? Most people communicate with the ability to read or write well. This might not be the case as you will soon find out.

How many times have you been to the doctor’s office and listened to an educated professional explain something to you that is just unintelligible. These people keep asking you, “Do you understand?” and sometimes out of embarrassment because you don’t want to look like stupid, you tell them. “Yes, I do understand.” This isn’t a good way to communicate, either.

How do we communicate in a positive way to get our points across? Ask the persons you are communicating with if they understand what you just said. In another case, if someone is talking to you, use the statement, “Just to make sure that I understand what you just said” and then repeat back your understanding of their conversation. Sometimes just asking a few simple questions and clarifying your understanding can bring great benefits to any communication.

In some countries like Japan, you might find them reading your body language more than the words you are communicating with. Sometimes just by the way someone stands or reacts to something you said, you can get a valuable insight to what the other person means in this conversation. Don’t forget, however, this could also lead to a misunderstanding. Again if you think someone is communicating with their body language, try not to assume that you know exactly what message they are trying to get across. Always ask them if they understand what you are talking about.

A person is responsible for what he says and to make sure that the other person completely understands the point he is trying to get across. Why not start using some of the simple skills in this article to help with your communication skill? You will start to see the benefits within a short period of time.

D. It can teach us how to react to others’ words.

4.What may be the best title for the text?

Exercise is known to benefit people’s mental health, but scientists recently discovered that too much exercise may have a negative effect on it.

The researchers studied about 1.2 million people in the United States in 2013, 2015 and 2017. The participants, on average, experienced 3, 4 days of poor mental health each month. Those who did exercise experienced 1, 5 fewer days of poor mental health per month, compared to those who didn’t exercise at all. The team found that people who exercised for 30 to 60 minutes three to five times a week had the best mental health, but those who exercised for more than three hours had worse mental health than those who didn’t exercise at all.

The scientists think that people who exercise so much may experience poorer mental health because that much exercise can be a sign of obsessive (强迫症患者) behaviors that have been associated with poor emotional and psychological outcomes. However, the only mental health disorder that the researchers looked at was depression.

Among those who had been diagnosed with depression, people who did exercise experienced 3.75 fewer negative mental health days than those who did not, showing an ever greater difference, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 7, 6 percent of people in the U.S. age 12 and over have depression. While all types of exercise appeared to help with mental health, cycling, gym-based exercise and team sports were the most beneficial.

The team also looked at more specific factors, like education. People with a college education reported 17.8 percent fewer days of poor mental health than those without that level education Additionally, people in a healthy BMI (体重指数) range reported a 4 percent reduction in poor mental health days thin those whose BMIs were high. Even salary was a factor: compared to people with bower salaries, those with higher salaries experienced a 17 percent reduction in poor mental health days.

The study showed that exercise can help with mental health, but that in some cases, limiting it may be necessary.

1.What did the study find?

A. People should do exercise three to five times a month.

B. Too much exercise may affect people’s mental health.

C. The more exercise people do, the healthier body they have.

D. People who do exercise have problems in mental health.

2.Which of the following sports benefits people s mental health most according to the text?

Two years ago, something happened that changed the way I look at the world. On my birthday, my grandfather, walking home with his hands full of groceries, fell and hit his head on the sidewalk. Just as we were leaving to meet him for dinner, we got the call that he was in the hospital. At first, I thought nothing of it, but when I heard the whole story, I couldn’t believe it. He hit his head so hard that he had a blood clot in his brain and it had to be operated on immediately, Everyone thought he would die.

Although my grandfather survived emergency brain surgery, he had complications (后遗症). He could hardly talk and he couldn’t walk. Shortly after, he was admitted to a nursing home. Today, he lives at home with my grandmother and is doing much better, but this isn’t about him. It’s about what I saw at that nursing home.

I saw something that many people haven’t seen, and some do often choose to ignore it, I saw more sadness in those days visiting the nursing home than I thought. In that one place were hundreds of old people who were alone and forgotten.

So what as to be done with the situation of the old? This is not an easy question, but something must be done. Perhaps groups in the community could assign each member to one nursing home patient with whom they could keep in regular contact. Maybe a school could focus on a nursing home and send cards, pictures and letters to residents. If periodic visits were arranged, I’m sure that for some, if not many, those students would be the only visitors they had all month. These are just a few ideas; we all need to work together.

I hope everyone to tour a local nursing home I further expect you to do something about it. You’ll brighten someone’s day, or maybe even his or her life.

A. They deserved sympathy.

B. They were poor but kind.

C. They always forgot something

D. They needed to care for students.

A. The author’s ways to look after old people in the community.

C. The author’s opinions about how to visit old people regularly.

D. The author’s reasons for sending old people to the nursing home.

For thousands of young people everywherecollege means taking their first big step into adult life. What you do in your first year of college can have a big effect on the rest of your college years. Here are some tips of mine for you.

Plan ahead. By the end of your first week, you'll know when you should finish each of your study tasks. Put those on your list. More importantly, you need to finish them on time. Start making good use of your time at the beginning of the term.

Eat right. College students often gain weight in their first year. Without Mom and Dad planning your meals, it's easy to lose track of just how many calories you’re taking in. Try to limit fast food and keep a varied diet.

Talk to your professors. College students tend to be afraid of their professors. Don't be afraid. They're there to help you. Visit a professor during his or her office hours just to chat with him or her. Tell them about a book you have reador ask for advice. And, of course, ask for help, whether with a difficult point in your readings or with big life issues (问题).If nothing of these, a professor can point you in the right direction to find the resources you need.

Speak up in class. Ask questions, answer the professor’s questions, and share your opinion as much as possible. There are no points for sitting quietly anymore.

Go to the library. There are so many resources available in the library-- magazines, videos, and of course, the books you need for your papers. Learn as much as you can about your library .Talk with the librarians about the resources available in your field.

Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none--that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas(画布)--the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.

Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.

Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed--All he needs is a stick, a garden rake(耙子)and most importantly, his lively imagination!

Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality" of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, looking for perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world's largest freelance(自由职业的)drawing, was created in the desert sand of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain, wash his paintings away.

Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary' (记录片)named “Sandman” in 2015. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand — he is also an excellent chef (厨师)and founder of an organization called“Outstanding in the Field”whose motto(座右铭)is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.

Everyone's at it, even my neighbors. I thought I might be the only person left in the world who hadn't done an eBay deal. So, I decided to try my hand at online Auction(网上拍卖).

Buying for Beginners

Sign up on www.eBay.co.uk. Most items e.g. tables, computers and booksready for auction will come with a picture and a short description; others may be marked with Buy It Now and have a fixed price. You can buy these right away.

If the item is being auctioned, you offer the highest price you are prepared to pay and eBay bids(出价)for you. The bid will be increased little by little until it goes beyond your highest bid, then you are emailed and asked if you would like to bid again. Auctions last up to 10 days and when they finish, you get an email telling you whether you have won the item.

How to Pay

Sellers decide how they would like to be paid and you need to check this before placing a bid as you might not want to post a check or postal order (邮政汇票). The easiest way is through PayPal, an online payment system that takes the money away from your credit card.

Selling Made Sample

If you plan to sell on eBay, it helps to include a picture of the item. I followed my friend’s advice and put up the items I wanted to sell for a 10-day auction, starting on a Thursday. This  way buyers had two weekends to bid.

The Big Things in Life

It's easy to post a small item, but furniture is a big part of eBay and this has to be collectively sent by deliverymen. Check the ways of delivery before you bid.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to make payment online.

B. Ways of making delivery online.

C. How to use an online auction system.

D. Advantages of an online auction system.

2.You should           if the item is being auctioned.

A. make loud noises    B. get the others not to bid

C. ask the other people’s price    D. offer the highest price you are ready to pay

3.After bidding for an item, a buyer    .

A. has chances to make higher bids    B. will get what he wants in ten days

C. should make payment immediately    D. may check its picture and description

4.The easiest way of making payment mentioned in the passage is       .

A. through a local banking system    B. by sending the money to the seller

C. through an online payment system    D. by paying the deliveryman directly

5.Which of the following statements is true?

A. Big items can't be sold on eBay.

B. Including a picture of the item for sale helps make the selling simple.

C. Sellers can only be paid in one way.

D. Most items ready for auction don’t have a picture.

Dear Daisy

Phew! I’m so glad the day is over. I’m really tired, but my first day at school went well.

First of all, we met outside the school building. I was very nervous because my primary school only had 300 pupils but in the middle school there are about 1300. What a difference! The older pupils are really big. I felt so small waiting there in front of the school.

The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names out to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs. Black. She took us to our classroom. It's on the 5th floor. We aren't allowed to use the lift! I couldn't believe it.

We spent all morning with Mrs. Black looking at our timetables. Everyone in the school had a different timetable. I'm worried that I’ll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room.

Lunchtime was OK. I had salad, fish and fruit, which was quite good, and then I went to play football with some of the other boys. They were all friendly and I don't think it will take me long to make friends.

After lunch we started lessons. 1 had maths and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece. That looked interesting. 1 have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived, so I’m going to do an Internet search and look it up in the library.

So far so good. I am quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I’ve got science. I hate science!

Yours,

Jason
