Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or the other, you’ll have to stand up and say – problem, I don’t want you in my life.

1. Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children – the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves work, too. These keep adding to our problems. Problems come in different shapes and colors and feelings.

But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems.

Talk, it really helps. What most of us think is that our problem can be understood only by us and that no talking is going to help. 2. Talking helps you move on and let go.

Write your problems. 3. When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. By doing this, imagine yourself throwing away the problems from your life.

Don’t lose faith and hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith and hope. Even if you lose all your money, familyyou should still have faith. 4.

Your problems aren’t the worst. No matter what problem you get in life, there’re another one million people whose problems are huger than yours. 5. Your problems might just seem big and worse, but in reality they can be removed.

Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out.

A.When we have a problem, a pressing, critical, urgent, life-threatening problem, how do we try and solve it?

B.But the truth is that when you talk about it, you’re setting free the negative energies that have been gathering within you.

C.Having a personal diary can also be of huge help if you don’t want a real person to talk with.

D.We can often overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.

E.Of course, we’ve been fighting troubles ever since we were born.

F.With faith and hope, you can rebuild everything that you lose.

G.Tell yourself: when they can deal with them, why can’t I?

A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women's shoes.

Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.

A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part, called the sole. This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.

Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.

For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.

1.How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?

A. They are used to make shoes.    B. They are buried or burned.

3.Which of the following directly helped to increase the sales of Rothy's shoes?

A. The design and color.    B. The reasonable price.

C. The company's advertisement.    D. The star power of Gwyneth Paltrow.

4.What is the purpose of the text?

A. To advertise a new kind of shoes.

B. To introduce a new way of recycling plastic waste.

C. To describe the process of making shoes.

D. To stress the importance of environmental protection.

Whatever happened to the familiar scene from the past of children playing “tag(捉人游戏)” in the streets while their parents chatted with the neighbors over the garden fence? This picture is fading fast today, as children are now leaving the streets in favor of a screen.

Several organizations are attempting to change this situation. One of these organizations is Play England, which aims to improve opportunities for children to play outside. A leading figure in the campaign is 50-year-old Adrian Voce, who has childhood memories of days spent in the “Big Woods” near his house with his older brothers. “We were given a packed lunch and told not to talk to strangers. I can still remember wandering in and out of each other’s houses.” he says.

However, it is not only the children that Mr. Voce and his organization have to convince. In many cases the parents themselves block his efforts. A survey in 2014 found that 85 percent of adults agreed that it was important for children to be able to play safely in the road or street where they live. However, many of them were not prepared to park their cars an extra 50 meters away from their homes.

Mr. Voce’s attempts to encourage children to play outside include the organization of campaigns like National Playday. Hundreds of communities all over the country take part in this effort, yet it can take a lot of people to give children a taste of what it is like to play in the streets. On one street in Aldershot last year there were five policemen, three community support officers, a traffic management crew, a closed-circuit television van, and a team of "play workers.”

Society today has changed to such an extent that children do not feel safe on the streets and their parents no longer feel comfortable about letting them play there. It is not only the appeal of computers and video games that has driven children inside, but also the presence of traffic, crime, and violent young people. However, thanks to the efforts of people like Adrian Voce, it may not be too late to turn back the clock.

1.What kind of feeling does Adrian Voce show when he looks back on his childhood?

A. Regret    B. Shame

C. Delight    D. Surprise

2.Why does the author say the parents themselves block Mr. Voce’s efforts?

A. They don’t want their children to be outside.

B. They are worried about the safety of the streets.

C. They are not optimistic about Mr. Voce’s campaign.

D. They won’t make the street safer for their children to play in.

3.What can we learn about National Playday?

A. It has rapidly spread to other countries.

B. A lot of people are needed to make it work.

C. It has not lived up to the organizers’ expectations.

D. It aims to call on parents to play with their children.

4.What is the author’s attitude towards children playing in the streets?

A. Worried.    B. Hopeful.

C. Unclear    D. Shocked.

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.

For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement and have strong opinions about everything.

Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.

But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.

That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They’dget back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.

We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life and new horizons

We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.

I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.

Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of journey—and the best part of yourself.

1.Why did the author use to take freeways to her parents' home?

A. It was less tiring.    B. It would befaster and safer.

C. Her kids would feel less confined.    D. She felt better with other drivers nearby.

2.The author stopped regularly on the country roads to ________

A. take care of the lamb    B. take a deep breath

C. relax in the fresh air    D. let the kids play with Banner

3.What does the author discover from the trip according to Paragraph 6?

A. Freeways are where beauty hides.

B. Getting close to nature adds to the joy of life.

C. Enjoying the beauty of nature benefits one's health.

D. One should follow side roads to watch wild animals.

4.What could be the best title for the passage?

A. The Road to Bravery    B. Creativity out of Necessity

C. Charm of the Detour    D. Road Trip and Country Life

I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one—it’s so simple. And I like the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.

Nike

In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.

McDonald’s

The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the arch-shaped(拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968.

Apple

There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette(轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.

Mercedes Benz

The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie and DMG in 1926.

Adidas

The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967.

1.What does the author think of the stories of the great logos?

A. They are boring.    B. They are out of date.

C. They are attractive.    D. They are practical.

2.We can learn that Apple’s present logo is    .

A. the religious story of Adam and Eve.    B. a bitten apple with only one color.

C. Newton’s sitting under an apple tree.    D. the rainbow-colored bitten apple.

3.Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?

A. Mercedes Benz - McDonald’s - Nike - Apple.

B. Nike - McDonald’s- Apple- Mercedes Benz.

C. McDonald’s– Apple- Nike- Mercedes Benz.

D. Nike- Mercedes Benz - McDonald’s- Apple.

Dear Mr. Li,

Long time no see! I'm glad to tell you that I have made a great progress in my English study since I become a senior high school student. When I started senior English in the beginning,I found much more difficult than that we learned in junior school and I almost lost heart. Later,I realized the importance of English, so I got up early every morning, kept recited English words, listened to English tapes and did a lot of exercises. Beside, I also asked my teachers and classmates of better ways of learning English. Now, I’m improving my English a lot. And I'm getting more and more interest in learning it. Thank you so much for your greatly help in your class.

All the best wish to you.

Yours,

Li Hua

Many effects of a lack of sleep, such as being bad-tempered and not working at your best, are well known.1.Regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity and heart disease, and it shortens your life expectancy.

How much sleep do we need?

2.But some need more and some less. What matters is that you find out how much sleep you need and then try to achieve it. As a general rule, if you wake up tired and spend the daylonging for a chance to have a nap, it's likely that you're not getting enough sleep.

3.

An occasional night without sleep makes you feel tired and irritable( 急躁易怒 ) the next day,but it won't harm your health. After several sleepless nights, the mental effects become more serious. Your brain will- fog, making it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. 4.

How to catch up on lost sleep?

If you don't get enough sleep, there's only one way to compensate (补偿) —getting more sleep.

5.If you've had months of limited sleep, you'll have built up a big sleep debt, so expect recovery to take several weeks.

Starting on a weekend, try to add on an extra hour or two of sleep a night. The way to do this is to go to bed when you’re tired and allow your body to wake you in the morning (no alarm clocks allowed!).

A. What happens if we don't sleep?

B. Why is a good sleep vital for a long life?

C. It won't happen with a single early night.

D. If it continues, lack of sleep can affect your overall health.

E. However, the cost of all those sleepless nights is more than those.

F. It's now clear that a solid night's sleep is essential for a long and healthy life.

G. Most of us need around 8 hours of good-quality sleep a night to function properly.

Teachers say the digital age has had a good influence and a not-so-good influence on this generation of American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in focus groups.

Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a "mostly positive" effect on their students research habits and skills. But 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating an "easily distracted generation with short attention spans (持续时间) " .And 64 percent said the technologies "do more to distract students than to help them academically(学业上) " . Many students think "doing research" now means just doing a quick search on Google.

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the. National Writing Project. Most of the teachers came from Advanced Placement classes, which provide college-level work for high school students.

Judy Buchanan is director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. Teachers really welcome these tools because they are ways to make some of learning exciting and engaging.Young people welcome these tools. And the goal is to really help them become creators of content, and meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers.

But one problem the survey found is that many students are lacking in digital literacy. In other words, they trust too much of the information they find on the Internet. Another problem the survey found is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able toquickly find information online.

Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are depending too much on search engines and do not makeenough use of printed books or libraries. Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

1.The purpose of the online survey is to____

A. convince teachers of the Internet good influence

B. spread knowledge about the Internet search tools

C. influence teachers viewpoints towards the digital age

D. get teachers opinions about the digital age influence on youngsters

2.What negative effect did the teachers think the Internet search has on students?

A. It results in students bad research habits and skills.

B. It brings too much negative information to the students.

C. It distracts students attention instead of helping them academically.

D. It develops their interest in doing research through the technologies.

3.What's Judy Buchanans attitude towards the use of the digital research tools?

A. Supportive.    B. Negative.    C. Critical.    D. Doubtful.

4.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. The Internet is changing everybody's life.

B. Teachers welcome the digital age in general.

C. The Internet has more disadvantages than advantages.

D. Solutions to the lack of digital literacy should be found.

Every year, millions of people head to London's Trafalgar Square to see Nelson's Column, and the four Iion statues that “guard” it. And last month, during the London Design Festival, a bright red lion sculpture was added to the collection.

But this was more than just a statue: It had a large open mouth, with an LED screen inside it.At the same time, passersby could type in random words on a screen close to the lion, which were used to produce an AI-created poem. The most interesting part of the poems lies in their randomness, as the words that people choose to enter include many things, such as the time, the weather and their mood. Ín the daytime, the finished poem appeared on the LED screen, but at night, it was projected (投射) onto the lion's body and the famous Nelson’s Column, in a 1ovely light display.

Es Devlin, the sculpture's creator, was inspired by the history behind the four historic lion statues. Edwin Landseer, the designer of the lions, wanted them to look much more animạted, but Queen Vietoria refused his plan. This made Devlin wonder, "What if we could give a lion a poetic voice?". According to Devlin, althọugh England has seen many poems about national identity in recent years, these works have been lacking imagination. "I wanted to make a piece that was poetic and collective" he told BBC News.

Afier standing for almost 180 years, the purpose of Trafalgar Square has changed over the years. But thanks to the high-tech lion and its poetry, the square is standing the test of time.

1.Why was the red lion more than just a statue?

A. It had an LED screen inside it.    B. It had a larger mouth than the others.

C. It could produce an AI-created poem.    D. Poems were projected onto the lion's body-

2.Which of the following best explains "randomness" underlined in Paragraph2?

A. Lacking styles.    B. Not having regular patterns.

C. Being special.    D. Attraction to readers.

3.What does Devlin think of poems about national identity in England in recent years?

A. They are creative.    B. They are not popular.

C. They are not imaginative.    D. They are poetic and collective.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Es Devlin's New Creation.    B. The London Design Festival.

C. A Big Event in Trafalgar Square.    D. The red lion in Trafalgar Square.

下面是一个中学生给某报编辑部写的一封信,仔细阅读并就信的内容以编辑的名义给此中学生回一封信。

Dear Editor

I am a high school student. I am a little overweight and I am embarrassed about that. I do not like going out any more for some people often laugh at me behind my back when I go for a walk. Certainly, I do not feel comfortable going to the gym to work out. Instead, I prefer to exercise at home, and it seems that I am always going on a diet. However, no matter what I do, my efforts to lose weight always end in failure.

And I do worry that my weight might damage my health. I’m not sure whether I should take weight-loss pills. There is news about a Canadian actress who suffered liver failure because of taking those pills.

What do you think I should do?

Best wishes

Guo Xilin
