Summer is here, and with it comes a chance you'll get too much sun. While there's no cure for sunburn, a small but fascinating new study suggests taking large amounts of vitamin D after exposure may prevent the associated redness and inflammation (发炎).

In the paper, researchers exposed 20 volunteers to a light resembling solar radiation to induce a sunburn on a small piece of skin. They then gave the ''burn victims'' large amounts of vitamin D, and followed up with participants one, two and three days (and a week) later to measure skin redness and thickness. The researchers found that vitamin D decreased inflammation and redness, compared with taking a placebo (安慰剂). And this effect increased in proportion to how much was consumed. Vitamin D also appears to increase the activity of a gene called arginase-1, which is involved in tissue repair and healing. Taking 50, 000 international units (IU) of vitamin D--125 times the recommended daily allowance-led to a significant reduction in redness and inflammation, compared with the placebo. Those who took 100,000 IU had even less redness and pain; and those who took 200, 000 IU had the greatest reduction in inflammation.

This is the first study to show vitamin D can reduce inflammation, and suggests that it  ''could potentially help prevent sunburn, '' says senior author Kurt Lu, a physician scientist and assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University.

It used to be thought vitamin D was primarily involved in building healthy bones and muscles, but recent research has found it has many more roles, including influencing inflammation, such as the kind associated with sunburns.

So, if you get burned, should you take a lot of vitamin D? The study authors don't recommend it. ''I think that's probably not a good idea and not well established by this study, '' says Barbara Gilchrest, a physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Such large amounts, if taken repeatedly, have the potential to cause vitamin D toxicity (毒性).

1.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.An unusual method for relieving sunburn.

B.Tips for how to travel safely in summer.

C.A suggestion on taking vitamin D properly.

D.Advice on how to take medicine effectively.

2.How do the researchers confirm the healing effect of taking vitamin D?

A.By observing the inflammation of skin every day.

B.By measuring the thickness of skin after a week.

C.By increasing the daily volume of vitamin

D.By comparing the effect with that of placebo.

3.Figures are used in paragraph 2 in order to ______.

A.recommend the daily intake

B.argue against the benefits of more Vitamin D

C.show the more Vitamin D, the greater benefits

D.stress the potential danger of too much Vitamin D

4.What can be inferred about the function of vitamin D?

A.Repeatedly taking large amounts of Vitamin D is beneficial.

B.Vitamin D may bring more advantages to us than what has been found out.

C.Don't take vitamin D unless your doctor approves you to do it.

D.Vitamin D is more useful for curing sunburn than building healthy bones.

If you cut in line, you might just be a bad person. The queue is a regulation where the reward (the ice-cream stand/dining room/ticket booth) is earned through patience. Your choice to avoid this time-honored process will be bound to draw the anger of those you pass by, drawing remarks like “Whoa there, Chief,” the passive-aggressive “There’s a line, you know!” and of course, the incredibly common “Hey, Copernicus, why don’t you guide yourself to the back of the line?”

But, in the moment in which you really cannot wait, for example, the entire royal family has prepared a dinner party upon you last minute, then there is a way to cut the line correctly.

There are a few different ways to consider and a few different methods to employ. The regularity of the situation is very important. If you’re waiting to use the photocopier at work, you might be more likely to manage a successful cut than if you were waiting for a lifeboat on the Titanic. Sure, that might be an extreme example. But the importance of the event does matter.

For those requests in normal situations, emphasizing either the urgency of your task or the simplicity of your task proved to be effective: experimenters who said “Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the photocopier?” had a cut rate of 60 percent and experimenters who said “May I use the photocopier because I need to make copies?” saw a success rate of 90 per cent when queuing for the copy machine.

If you have a couple of extra dollars lying around, bribing members of the line also proved to be effective. And most of the time, the person being bribed didn’t end up accepting the money, because even the offer showed that the briber had a sense of desperation.

1.Why does the author use the remarks about Chief and Copernicus in paragraph 1?

A.To illustrate the reaction from members in line. B.To encourage those who want to cut in line.

C.To praise the behavior of cutting in line. D.To provide advice which helps cut in line.

2.Which of the following is not a wise way to cut in line?

A.Giving the members in line money. B.Stating the emergency of the event.

C.Considering the regularity of the situation. D.Defending the right of cutting in line.

3.What is the best title for the text?

A.Be Patient When Queuing. B.Acceptable Ways to Cut in Line.

C.Time and Tides Waits for No Man. D.Special Rights under Emergency.

Jules is now in his sixties, and is one of the many homeless people who live on the streets; he buys a newspaper most days. Today, with his fellow tramps, he reads about yesterday's student demonstrations.

Like many of the tramps who live under the bridges, Jules was not always so poor. A long time ago he was in the Navy, and like many who have been to sea for a long time, he has stayed slim and fit. Despite the strict organization on board ship, he loved his life, and had the opportunity to see many countries. He visited Poland and Russia; in South Africa he realized what he valued in each country was the people he met. He was always astonished and delighted by the ways in which the people he met differed from one country to another. Some day, he hopes, everyone will see the world as he does.

After many happy years in the Navy, he had to retire. The good things in life always come to an end. His mother and father had long since died and he’d lost touch with his other relatives. He became an industrial designer. He was happy, although it wasn’t the same as the sea. He never wanted to get married and have children.

And then there was the period of darkness. He smiles sadly. He shrugs his shoulders and looks at his hands. There are tears in the corners of his eyes. This is something that he cannot bring himself to talk about. ''It all went wrong, '' he whispers.

He was silent for a while, then recovered. He began to talk more loudly. ''Look at me now---it makes me angry. And what about the President? He's been in power for years, and look what he's done for us. Nothing! I am still out on the streets and live the life of a dog.''

1.What can we learn about Jules’ life in the Navy

A.He only visited three countries.

B.He enjoyed the life on board ship.

C.He was very well paid for the job he did.

D.He liked meeting people from different countries.

2.Why did Jules change his job according to the passage?

A.He wanted to start a family. B.He wanted to be near his relatives.

C.He didn't enjoy the work any more. D.He was too old to stay in the Navy

3.What is Jules's opinion of the President?

A.The President should increase pensions for old people.

B.The President had not had enough time to change things.

C.The President should have done more to help people like him.

D.The President should not allow homeless people to stay on the streets.

Tips for Successful Gift Giving

Good gift giving is an art. The perfect present can lift a mood or improve a relationship. Whatever the occasion, gift giving is a social ritual that requires careful thought and consideration.1. We spoke to some experts to help us craft a simple guide to gifting.

Don’t add a small gift to a big gift. When we receive gifts in a bundle, we tend to unconsciously average out their value, so a small gift tacked onto a big one will hurt the latter’s impact. 2.

3. A dream vacation or seeing your favorite artist in concert will give you memories that last forever. Experiences often have more thought gone into them, and they create more vivid memories. We might remember the tablet that a friend or a loved one has bought us, but not as much as a two-week holiday to Floridathe memories and the emotional attachment to experiences are greater than to physical objects.

Think like the receiver. 4. That might seem obvious, but it happens far less  than we'd like. People tend to use gifts as jokes, encouragements to change one’s ways, or to signal something about themselves rather than providing utility or happiness to the receiver.

Remember there’s a reason why we say that it’s the thought that counts. 5. Most  people don’t want lots of money spent on them — they just want you to think about them, and that can be done in lots of easy ways.

A.Gift things you like best.

B.So there are a set of rules to follow.

C.Gift experiences rather than things.

D.Don’t forget why you are giving gifts.

E.Buy things your receiver would buy for themselves.

F.When you give others gifts, never forget to choose the expensive things.

G.When it comes to gift giving, remember that sometimes less is more.

Most people hold the belief that young people from poor families whose socio-economic backgrounds are not in bad conditions tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Headstart” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into pre-school institutions at the age of three and it was expected to help them succeed in education. However, the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not willing to get involved in the process.

To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on researches showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different social-economic status, age and family structure. The program invited many trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance to communicate with their children, and useful skills on child development.

At the age of three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio-economic background and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio-economic backgrounds or family structures. What they found through the program was that one of the most important factors that affected the child’s development was the poor quality of parent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.

The “Missouri” program is quite different from “Headstart” program. From what they did we can draw a conclusion: Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness.

1.What can we learn about the “Headstart” program?

A.It helped many children from poor families to make progress.

B.It failed because the children they helped had already fallen behind.

C.It helped the children involved succeed in their education soon.

D.It succeeded in improving the intelligence of all the children.

2.We can learn from the second paragraph that the “Missouri” program ______.

A.focused on the children’s first school teachers.

B.helped the children return to the same home.

C.made the children improved in many aspects.

D.gave the parents advice on their development.

3.What does the underlined word “interaction” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Intelligence. B.Performance.

C.Education. D.Communication.

4.The last paragraph tells us that ______.

A.parents play an important role in children’s education.

B.it is impossible to overcome educational unfairness.

C.poor families cannot change the fate of their children.

D.The “Missouri” program pay more attention to the ages.

Sunaian’s family left India and moved to the UK when she was 13. She had to start a new school...

I remember it really well. My parents drove me to the school and said goodbye to me. I took a deep breath and walked into the school.

I didn’t know what to feel. I was excited and scared and a bit nervous, all at the same time. There were lots of other kids around. They were already in groups of friends, but none of them said hello or anything. It was a strange feeling for me, like I didn’t really belong there. I wanted to be somewhere else, but that wasn’t possible.

The first thing I had to do was register, so I went to a room in the school that had a sign saying “Administration”. Suddenly, I felt like I was some kind of criminal. They started asking me all kinds of questions. Then I went off to my first class.

My first class. Wow, that was horrible. Perhaps it was because my hair or clothes were different, but everyone just looked at me in such a strange way. And just like when I arrived, no one came to talk to me. Incredibly, that’s never happened: no one has even taken the time to get to know me or like me. I have friends because I made the first move to meet people.

Maybe the worst class that day, though, was Science. The teacher wasn’t too bad. She introduced me to the class and showed me where to sit. But the other students? Well, they looked at me like I was a guinea pig or something they were going to use for an experiment. I hated every minute.

Then there was a break and I went to sit somewhere alone, missing my mum and dad. But I thought they’d want me to keep trying, so I tried to be more positive in the next class. Not so good, though. Everyone talked to other students, but I sat by myself. At the end of the day, I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

But, as time passed, things have got better. Now I’m doing fine and I get OK grades. I’ve learned lots of things — but not what the teachers teach. I’ve learned that I’m strong and brave. I’ve learned that I will succeed even if some things aren’t the way I want them to be.

When she looked around her house, Betty Margaret saw lots of electronics. Along with the usual things like her laptop and smart phone, there were all of her kids’ electronic devices: cell phones, video game devices and more! There seemed to be more than enough ways for her and her three children to be online all day, every day.

Ms. Margaret worried that her kids were becoming too dependent on the Internet and electronics. Then she began to reread one of her favorite books, Henry Thoreau’s Walden, which gave Ms. Margaret an idea. Thoreau spent 2 years in a simple cabin without running water, and having to grow his own food. Maybe she and her family could live without such luxuries as computers and electronic devices for a while.

Ms. Margaret talked with her kids and explained that she wanted the family to try living for 6 months without the Internet, cell phones, TV, and video games. Ms. Margaret writes articles for a newspaper in Australia, and had written several books as well. She told her children that if they agreed, she would write a book about their experience and they could go on a trip abroad with the money from sales of the book. Her three children agreed, and “the experiment,” as Ms. Margaret called, began.

Over the course of the experiment, the Margaret children had different reactions to life without electronics. Before the experiment began, Anni, the eldest of the children, read books more than her younger brother and sister. She therefore had a relatively easy adjustment to the family’s new lifestyle. Anni could also use the library’s computer for her homework. Bill, who loved to play video games before the experiment began, had to find a way to spend all of his new free time. He started to spend more time practicing his saxophone (萨克斯管). Susan, the youngest child in the family, had the hardest time adjusting to life without electronics. She felt restless for the first weeks and later, influenced by her elder sister, gradually began to find interest in the novel experiences brought by various books.

Sadly, bullying is really common. In a study of young people in the UK aged 12-20, half of them said they had been bullied.1.They might lose interest in the activities they enjoy, avoid spending time with other people and not go to classes or school.

2.Bullying can also be with words-saying or writing things that are not nice. Another type of bullying is social-embarrassing someone or telling other people not to be friends with them. Bullying involves an imbalance of power. Maybe one person has private information or is more popular, or maybe they are physically bigger and stronger.

Bullying usually involves more people than you think.3.Sometimes other people help the bully or join in. Then there are the kids that support-they support the bullying by being an audience. They laugh or encourage the children who are bullying in other ways. Some children see what is happening and want to help. Others may comfort and defend the person being bullied.

Does your school do anything to prevent bullying? Why don’t you create a student anti-bullying group? This group can do many things. Let the head teacher know how well the school is doing with fighting bullying and give them advice.4.Make posters and displays or take over the school’s social media for a week to send out anti-bullying messages.

Bullying is a social problem and it needs a solution from society. The next time you see someone being cruel to someone else, take a stand! Don’t laugh or ignore what’s happening-tell an adult as soon as possible and help everyone to realize that bullying is not OK.5.

A.Choose an anti-bullying slogan for your school.

B.There are the people who bully and those who are bullied.

C.Bullying is not just physical, like hitting or kicking someone.

D.To stop bullying we need everyone to be brave and take a stand.

E.Bullying behaviors have the potential to happen more than once.

F.Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations.

G.People who are bullied are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.

Ever since Donald Trump was elected the president of the US, the entire Trump family has been put under a microscope. In China, the spotlight has been mainly focused on Trump and his daughter Ivanka. She is described on WeChat as an extremely influential role model with stunning beauty, a successful career, and a happy family. She leads a dream life that a million girls would kill for. Yes, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But she got where she is by herself.

There are always articles that say people born into wealthy families are better looking and have a better family background than you, but these people do work harder than you. Are you a loser if you were raised in an ordinary family? Should you feel guilty that you sleep eight hours a day because Ivanka sleeps five?

If you just want to keep a stable nine-to-five job, does it mean you are not ambitious? How about if you don’t work out or eat healthy, does that mean you will not find your Mr. or Miss Right? There is a tendency in media nowadays to encourage elitism. They are trying to brainwash young people into thinking that they should invest a huge amount of time and money in bodybuilding and appearance enhancement so as to improve the quality of their life and join the elites. But what’s the disadvantage of being of average quality? Do you really need to go to the gym five days a week unless you are a gym maniac (狂人)? Do you really need to break your neck and sacrifice to earn your first pot of gold only to worry constantly about how to be accepted into high society later?

Don’t let the idea of elitism get to you. Everybody has a right to live the life they want. Human beings should not be judged as a success or failure based on whether they are a part of the elite or not. As long as you lead a happy and comfortable life, why bother to chase after other people’s shadows? Choose your own life path and go for it.

Beekeeper Pablo Alvarez sits near his hives (蜂箱) and points up into a cloudless, blue Chilean sky. This season, Alvarez says, there is much less bee traffic than usual. Spring rains once led to fields of flowers in Casablanca, a town on the Chilean Pacific coast. Now, there is just dry earth. He says he lost half of his hives by early spring. “At the end of winter, bees need flowers to grow and make honey,” he told Reuters reporters. No flowers means no food, he added.

His story is common among beekeepers across much of central Chile. A severe, years-long lack of rain is making life difficult for honey bees. Concern over how the changing environment has affected bees has reached the highest levels of government in Chile. The country has already provided large amounts of money for farmers suffering from the drought. In August, it said it would include the “costs” of climate change in future agency budgets.

"We all know the importance that bees have in agricultural production," Agriculture Minister Antonio Walker recently told reporters. Honey bees pollinate (授粉) many of Chile’s major export crops, including blueberries, apples and cherries.

Already, agriculture officials have ordered a state of emergency in more than 100 farm communities throughout central Chile. Though dry periods are normal from time to time, officials say climate change has made the current dry period longer and more severe. Rainfall in September in Santiago was down nearly 80 percent compared to the historical average.

Alvarez has begun taking care of an organic bee yard filled with native, drought-resistant plants. Yet even as he describes those efforts, the horn of a water truck sounds. His well has run dry. Now he must pay for water, too.

1.It can be inferred from the passage that          .

A.100 farm communities are now in an urgent situation in Chile

B.the government has provided beekeepers with agency budgets

C.beekeepers can use the water for free if their wells have run dry

D.the decreasing number of bees will affect the agricultural production

2.Which best describes the writer’s tone in the passage?

A.Disapproving. B.Enthusiastic.

C.Concerned. D.Doubtful.

3.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Years-long Drought Threatens Honey Bees in Chile

B.Climate Change Makes the Dry Period More Severe

C.The Decrease in Number of Beekeepers Has Drawn Attention

D.The Drought Calls for the Government to Take Immediate Action

COURTESY PAUL BOZYMOWSKI-Three New York City police officers paid for a woman’s groceries rather than arresting her.

As temperatures approached 90 degrees in New York City last July 4th, three police officers ducked into a Whole Foods Market to get something cold to drink. What they walked into was a heated human drama.

Once inside, the cops, Lt. Louis Sojo and Officers Esanidy Cuevas and Michael Rivera, were approached by a store security guard who asked for help with a suspected shoplifter. The woman in question didn’t have the look of a career criminal. She was obviously scared, and her cheeks were wet with tears.

The cops peeked inside her bag. “All we saw was containers of food.” Cuevas told CBS New York.

"I’m hungry," she explained quietly.

Caught red-handed, the woman no doubt expected to be sentenced to jail for the crime of being hungry while poor. But the cops had other ideas. “We’ll pay for her food,” Sojo told the surprised security guard.

There’d been no discussion among the three men. It went unsaid. Instead, they picked up the woman’s bag and accompanied her to a cash register, where each took out $10 to pay the tab. She would not be arrested today.

All the woman could do was weep in gratitude. Covering her face with a kerchief and drying her eyes, she repeated, “Thank you, thank you.”

She wasn’t the only one touched by this act of mercy. “It was a very beautiful, genuine moment,” says Paul Bozymowski, who was at the store. He was so taken by what he’d witnessed that he posted a photo on Twitter for all to see.

But attention was never what the officers sought. They were driven by a far more common emotion. As Sojo told CNN, “When you look at someone’s face and see that they need you and they’re actually hungry, it’s pretty difficult as a human being to walk away from something like this.”

1.What can be learnt about the woman from the passage?

A.She had stolen in the shop several times before.

B.She was caught on the spot by three police officers.

C.She was found innocent and would not be arrested.

D.She was forced to commit the crime due to the dilemma of life.

2.Paul Bozymowski posted a photo on Twitter to      .

A.appeal for sympathy for the people in need B.express his gratitude to the police officers

C.show more people the cops’ act of kindness D.record the unforgettable moment in his life

3.What drove the three police officers to pay for the woman?

A.Their great devotion to work B.A deep sense of being human

C.The attraction of the public attention D.Their different attitude towards shoplifting

What kind of house will you buy in the future? Would you like to live in a house where your plants can call your phone to tell you that they need to be watered? Or a house that helps you cut your energy bill by turning off the lights when you leave a room? It may sound like science fiction, but it already exists! Come and visit the Smart Home at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois. It will show how you can live a green lifestyle by making use of advanced technology throughout the home that makes your life easier and simpler.

The Smart Home uses green technology to record the energy it uses, including electricity, water and gas. The house’s energy dashboard (仪表盘) lets you know your energy use through your television and computer. The house greets you with the new information when you walk in the door. It is able to record when you enter and leave rooms, and can switch the lights, television and music off                    .

The Smart Home is made entirely of recyclable and renewable materials. The furniture is made from used light bulbs, plastic bottles and other renewable materials, but you can’t tell from just looking at them. The kitchen countertops (工作台面) are made of recycled glass.

The entire house is designed to control the use of energy. The roof of the Smart Home has a sustainable vegetable garden, which does little harm to nature. Even the personal computer is green: it uses less power than a 60-watt light bulb. The house can raise and lower the window shades by itself.

Focusing in class really proves to teachers that you are a capable student but it also shows that you have got a solid level of self-control, which will be very important in your future life.

Get a good night’s sleep. Students should get at least nine hours of sleep each night. However, it’s hard to maintain those good sleep habits. Set a bedtime routine, and go to bed at the same hour each night. Your mind will not be able to concentrate if it’s not rested...it needs a break!

Eat a healthy breakfast. Although this may seem irrelevant to focusing during class, eating a nutritious meal in the morning gives you fresh energy for the day. If you consume a big meal, you’ll feel better throughout the day.

Get involved in class discussions. This is a wonderful way to become a more focused, successful student. When a teacher asks a question, offer to answer it. This shows the teacher that you’re listening carefully during the class.

Do your best. When you walk into that classroom, put a smile on your face and some confidence in your pocket.

Listen to music during your break. It is very refreshing and it can clear your mind between subjects, which could improve your productivity. But don’t get too carried away with the music.

Warnings:

Keep away from your more talkative friends. They can often distract you from your work.

Don’t stare at the teacher for too long. This might not let you work properly. In short, look at the teacher, but don’t overdo it.

The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的) skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful—both in school and in life.

Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.

Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks—both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.

In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active, which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said.

Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (转换) “those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “_______” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time.

“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”

1.What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?

A.The popular use of smartphones.

B.The absence of blackboard in classrooms.

C.The lack of practice in handwriting.

D.The use of new technologies in teaching.

2.Berninger’s study published in 2009 _________.

A.discussed the importance of writing speed

B.found that good essays are made up of long sentences

C.indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper

D.focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer

3.What does “mind’s eye” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.Imagination. B.Soul. C.Picture. D.Window.

4.What conclusion could be drawn from the passage?

A.Handwriting still has a place in today’s classrooms.

B.Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching.

C.Computers can help people with their choice of words.

D.Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade.

Instagram(图片分享社交应用程序)is about to take its biggest step toward removing likes from its platform. After months of testing an option to hide likes in select international markets, Instagram, which is owned by FacebookFB, has already been testing hiding likes in seven other countries, including Canada, Ireland and Australia. For years, likes have been central to how celebrities, brands, politicians and everyday users experience Instagram and Facebook. It's a way of measuring popularity and success. But in recent months, Instagram has been rethinking how likes contribute to making its platform more toxic. Now it's considering a change.

The total number of likes on posts — which appear as hearts on the app ——will disappear from Instagram's main feed, profile pages and permalink(永久链接)pages. The owner of the account can still see their own likes, but their followers won't know the count.

CNN Business previously spoke with users in countries with the test. The majority felt this move would improve well-being on the app. Instagram is the most detrimental(不利的,有害的)social networking app for young people's mental health, such as negatively impacting body image, according  to one study.

But other users and psychologists said hiding likes won't fix everything. The test doesn't address some of the key ways that activity on Instagram can impact the well-being of users, including bullying, feeling left out and thinking other people's lives are better than their own.

Renee Engeln, a psychology professor at Northwestern University, voiced his opinion that the biggest impact of Instagram is the content and the exposure to this constant stream of perfected images is what seems to hurt psychologically. Plus, users can still see their own likes ——and feel badly if their posts don't perform well.

1.How do users experience Instagram in this passage?

A.By giving likes. B.By hiding likes.

C.By selecting platforms. D.By showing off talents.

2.The underlined word “toxic” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “      ”.

A.profitable B.poisonous

C.popular D.positive

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Instagram has affected youngsters' mental health.

B.The account owners won't know the count o£ likes.

C.Instagram tested hiding likes in seven countries first.

D.The majority think Instagram has been a well-being app.

4.What could be the best title of the passage?

A.Instagram Misuses Likes

B.More People Are Against Likes

C.Likes Cause Mental Problems

D.Likes will Be Hidden on Instagram
