Most Americans take pride in inviting guests with open arms. What should you do if an American friend has invited you to visit his family? You've never been to an American home before, and you're not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? What time should you arrive or leave? How long should you stay? Take it easy. I’ll tell you all about it.

The question of whether or not to bring a gift often worries guests. Giving your host a gift is not just a social custom in some cultures—it's expected. But in American culture, a guest does not have to bring a gift. Of course, some people do bring a small gift for their host. Proper gifts might usually be flowers, candy or—if the family has small children—toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don't worry. No one will even notice.

Plan to arrive on time, or call to tell your host that you will be late. When you've finished the meal, the host may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so, it's about time to head for the door.

Americans usually like to invite guests ahead of time. Only very close friends visit the host unexpectedly without being invited. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Here's one golden rule for house guests: short stays are best. Even relatives don’t usually stay for several weeks at a time. Your host family will appreciate our consideration (体贴), and they may even invite you back!

Sometimes, you do not finish drinking your glass of water before you go to bed. 1.

But have you ever wondered if it is still safe to drink?

“If you have clean water in a clean glass, you’re fine to drink it for a day or two,” Kellogg Schwab from the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute in the US told Time.

2. That’s because after about 12 hours, the carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the air reacts(反应)with the water in your glass, slightly lowering its pH level.

Also, there might be more microorganisms (微生物) in your water if you leave it out overnight. Microorganisms grow more quickly at room temperature. These microorganisms can stay on your glass. 3. But as long as you clean your glasses very often, this will not be a problem.

In countries like the US and UK, people often drink water directly from the tap (水龙头).4. Most experts say that tap water has a shelf life of six months, according to Zane Satterfield from West Virginia University, US. After six months, there is less chlorine () in the water and bacteria (细菌) start to grow. You’d better not drink the water otherwise you may get sick.

5. Schwab said people should be careful with them. If you leave a bottle of water under the sun or in a car for a long period of time, the plastic produces a chemical called BPA. This chemical can cause heart disease and cancer.

A.What about plastic water bottles?

B.They can make you get sick more easily.

C.Is it safe for you to drink the water later?

D.But you may find that it tastes strange.

E.Some people prefer to drink water from rivers.

F.You might want to drink it the next morning.

G.This is OK—however, tap water cannot be stored for a long time.

George Washington Carver had a goal. This was to help southern farmers who needed good crops. They needed crops that didn’t hurt the soil. Carver went to Simpson College in Iowa, in which he studied for three years. Then he went to Iowa State, where he got two degrees. The college knew he was smart and wanted him to stay. So he joined the team. He was put in charge of a huge greenhouse. There he grew over 20,000 kinds of fungi(真菌),which made him famous.

Carver had many job offers. Thomas Edison offered $175,000 a year. Henry Ford tried to hire him too. Joseph Stalin invited him to the Soviet Union to help with cotton. But Carver refused all offers. Instead, he took a job at Tuskegee Institute. This was a school for African Americans. Carver was paid only $1,000 a year. But he was happy because he had goals to reach and he knew he could reach them at Tuskegee.

Carver worked at Tuskegee for 47 years. He never asked for a raise in pay. And he never received one. He worked so hard that he died in his office chair on January 4, 1943.

Carver came up with over 300 products from peanuts (花生), all of which could have been patented (申请专利). He could have made millions. But he did not want to. Here is what he said, “Mr. Creator did not charge to grow the peanut. I cannot accept money for my work with it.”

Through his efforts, Carver set up a fund, for he wanted research to continue. He gave his life’s savings to it, which came to $40,000. One honor came after his death. His birthplace was made a national shrine (圣地). How surprised the modest Carver could have been!

If you are home-alone, or live alone, and somebody comes to the door, shout out “I got it” so that it seems like someone else is there with you and you are not alone. But actually before that, there are lots of preventive(预防的) actions to take.

Give your apartment a safety check

It’s a good idea to give your apartment a once-over for safety concerns—ideally before you even move in. Complete this safety checklist.

Can any of your valuables be seen from the street?

Can you see who’s at the door without opening it?

Do you have all your mail held at the post office when you travel?

Have all the locks of your doors been changed since you moved in?

Become friends with your neighbors

If you’re shy, then you’d probably prefer anything else to chatting with neighbors. But make an effort to be friendly. In one way or another, your neighbors will be more willing to lend a hand to a friend than they are to help out a stranger in times of trouble.

Be smart about spare keys

Thieves and other illegal types know exactly where to check for spare keys.

So don’t think you’re being clever by hiding them in the mailbox, or underneath a carpet. Instead, you had better leave them to a friend or trusted neighbor.

Always lock the door

Lock your doors, every single time. Even if you’re just going to the garbage dumpster(垃圾大铁桶) quickly, or only stepping inside to catch something you forgot.

It may seem like overkill — especially if you live in a relatively safe district. But it only takes that one moment for someone to steal in.

1.Why does the author advise you to shout “I got it” in Paragraph 1?

A.To protect yourself. B.To answer the door.

C.To call out loudly. D.To welcome the guests.

2.What is the author’s opinion about spare keys?

A.Hide spare keys in the mailbox.

B.Take all the keys with you if possible.

C.Leave the keys to someone you trusted.

D.Have your keys ready as you leave.

3.What are the right preventive actions?

Never change the locks.

Close the door in time.

Make friends with neighbors.

Put spare keys under the carpet.

Keep valuables seen from the street.

Have a safety check about the apartment.

Plants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing (光合作用) while animals have all the fun. Right? Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions between ants and plants. The ant and plant co-evolution (协同进化) started with ants feeding on plants and plants evolving ant-friendly features.

Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ant use. Some plants have evolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attack from other insects and even mаmmаlѕ. Тhеѕе іnсludе hollow thorns that аntѕ will live іnѕіdе, or ехtra nесtаr (琼浆) оn lеаvеѕ or stems for the ants to eat. Some ants will just cheat and take the nectar and run, but some will stick around and attack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help them move their seeds around, by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up the seed and carry it away, eat the food packet, and leave the seed - often in a nutrient-rich area where it'll grow better, and since it's farther away from its parent, they won't have to compete for resources.

But scientists weren't sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants got started. If evolution is an arms race between species developing ways to make use of their neighbors, then scientists wanted to know whether plants or ants fired the first shot. It was a chicken-and-egg question, whether things started with ants developing behaviors to take advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants.

The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it's not easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance. Scientists say their study maters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complex interactions evolved.

C.How plants and ants survive attacks. D.Why plants and ants need co-evolution.

3.Which is true about the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants?

A.Ants depended more upon plants. B.It caused a race for better evolution.

C.How it got started was uncertain. D.It was of little value for future studies.

4.What's the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A.To introduce a science research method.

B.To inform readers of a latest research finding

C.To arouse readers' interest in science research.

D.To criticize people's traditional views about plants.

A company called Compass Pools has some good news for height and swimming enthusiasts.Recently, the company announced their novel design-a first of its kind 360-degree pool which is set to be placed on a skyscraper in London. The Infinity London will be the first and only building in the world to include this cutting-edge pool design. The pool will be laid on top of a 55-story skyscraper and will allow people to float over 200 meters above the London skyline with unobstructed(无障碍)views of the city.

The entrance to the pool is hidden.People began to raise questions about how anyone would get inside the pool. Compass Pools explains: "Swimmers will access the pool through a rotating spiral(螺旋)staircase based on the door of a submarine, rising from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out."

But that is not the only unique technology of the pool. The designers found a way to make sure the wind doesn't blow the water down to the streets. They included a built-in anemometer(风力计)to monitor the wind speed. It is linked to a computer-controlled building management system which will also take care of the temperature of the water.

Alex Kemsley promises that this unique pool will surpass expectations."Swimming in the SkyPool at The Shardit's quite a strange feeling to have helicopters flying past at your level but this pool takes it a step further," he says."Putting your goggles(防水镜)on and with a 360-degree view of London from 220m up, it really will be something else-but it's definitely not one for the acrophobic(恐高)!"

While the exact date of the construction is not clear yet, if things go well, it may begin in 2020.The location has yet to be confirmed too.

Have you ever missed something in your life?

The wife asked the husband when she was 25. Upset, the husband replied:“I missed a new job opportunity.”When she was 35,the husband angily told her that he had just missed the bus. At 45, the husband sadly said:“I missed the opportunity to see my relative before his last breath." At 55,the husband said disappointingly: “I missed a good chance to retire.” At 65, the husband hurriedly replied:“I missed a dental appointment.”At 75, the wife did not ask the husband any more, and the husband was kneeling in front of the very sick wife. Remembering the question the wife used to ask him, this time he asked the wife the same question. The wife, with a smile and peaceful look, replied: “In this life, I did not miss having you!" The husband was full of tears. He always thought that they could be together forever. He was always busy with work. So he had never been circumspect to his wife. The husband hugged the wife tightly and said: “Over 50 years, how 1 had allowed myself to miss your deep love for me !”

In the busy city life, there are many people who are always busy with work. These people focus on their jobs, and these people sacrifice all their time and health to meet the social expectations. They are unwilling to spend time on health care. They miss the opportunity to be with their children in their growing up. They neglect the loved ones who care for them, and also their health. Nobody knows what is going to happen one year from now.

Life is not permanent, so always live in the now. Express your gratitude to your loved ones in words. Show your care with actions. Treat everyday as the last day of life. In this way, when you are gone, your loved ones would have nothing to feel sorry about.

The snow was falling and the roads had become dangerous. The schools were dismissed early, but much to my surprise, my ____ wasn’t canceled. So I went, feeling especially heroic. As far as I could see, I was risking my life to keep my ____. Snow or no snow, I would be on time for my scheduled donation at the local ____ center.

When I got there, I discovered I wasn’t _____. Four more “hero-types” were already lying back in donor chairs with lines ____ to their veins, and machines quietly pumping away to ______ their lifesaving gifts.

Seeing my fellow donors honoring their own commitments, I realized why I was there. I lay back in my donor chair, ready to make a difference in the life of someone I would never _____.

To be honest, I’d never really thought about why I donate. I just do it. But a few months ago, during one of my ____ donations I learned that my blood was specifically for a cancer patient and for a newborn baby—both patients needed what I would give in order to live. I’ve viewed my visits to the blood center _____ ever since.

My wife Karen is a _____, too. And more importantly, she has been on the bone marrow (骨髄) list for fifteen years, ever since she signed up to provide bone marrow to a kindergartner with leukemia (白血病). That little girl died before Karen’s bone marrow could help her, ____ Karen was called again recently. Her test results were still on file, and it turned out she was a potential ____ for someone else. The caller asked Karen if she would still be willing to become a bone marrow donor. “Yes,” she said and then immediately began answering questions on the pages of paperwork for further testing. It was a race ____ time.

I wish I could say that this ____ was won. It wasn’t. The caller later thanked Karen for her participation and asked a few more questions—including whether or not she’d ____ on the donor list. “Of course,” Karen answered.

Last week Karen gave blood and next week I’ll make my usual donation. I’ll ____ an afternoon from my schedule and make an appointment. I don’t know whose life my donation may ____. Most likely it will be a ____, but on any day the person needing a blood product could be you or me or maybe a loved one. It is worthwhile to ___ our time to donate.

I really do feel _____ every time I donate. And I like the feeling.

Where did your family eat dinner last night? In the car on the way to sport? At McDonald’s? Or at the dinner table? A survey taken a few years ago found that 28% families ate dinner together at home seven nights a week. Another quarter said they ate together three or fewer nights a week.

Once upon a time the situation was different. 1. Plates, forks and spoons would be laid out. As dinner time approached, an increasing number of hungry mouths would begin to appear with the question, “What’s for dinner”?

2. The data seems to point to two main issues: overworked parents and over-scheduled children. When mum or dad do get home in the evening, they are soon in the car again to send the children to soccer, music, tutoring, and a host of other events.

This nightly ceremony around the dinner table is both vital and fruitful; it is what keeps a family together. Sure, the conversation is not always significant and children argue. And sometimes the deepest and most meaningful times in a family are not at the table at all. 3.The dinner table is the place where a family builds an identity. Stories are passed down, jokes are exchanged and the wider world is examined through the lens(镜头) of a family’s values. Children pick up vocabulary and a sense of how conversation is structured. 4.  Dinner time is “family time”. Coming back daily to the same place helps gain familiarity.

The significance of dinner time is more than above. Studies show that the more families eat together, the less likely the children are to smoke, drink, get depressed, and develop eating disorders, and the more likely they are to do well in school and learn how to socialize. One professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey stated, “A meal is about civilizing children. 5.

So start by planning some stay at home family dinners together. Just family talk.

A. It’s a time to teach them to be a member of their culture.

B. Each night the dining table would be set with a simple cloth.

C. Why not cut back on a few activities and have dinner with your family?

D. What accounts for this decline in families eating together today though?

E. They also learn good table manners, something that will benefit them for life.

F. It was important for children and parents to sit down together and get to know each other.

G. However, there is still something unique about the time a family spends around the dinner table.

How do you know if your home is an easy aim for thefts(偷窃)? Around the holidays, many families don’t consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thefts. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.

● Either have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers, or tell your mailperson to hold your mail until you return. Nothing says “Hey, we are not home!” like when your postbox is filled with all kinds of mails and you have many different newspapers in your driveway.

● Set several different lights in your house on random timers (随机定时器)Don’t leave your outdoor lights on all the time. Instead, put your outside lights on timers to be on during the nights.  If an outdoor light remains on for days at a time, it means that nobody is home to turn it off.

● If you have pets that you are not taking with you on vacation, leave them with a friend, rather than having someone come into your house every day to take care of them. When thefts see a neighbor or friend entering your house every day, they will know you are not home.

● Close all your curtains when you leave town. This is effective to deter possible thefts, as no one can see what is in your house. If they don’t know what there is to take, then the risk is even greater for them to break in.

● This article just has suggested a few tips to help you keep your house safe while you are on holiday. Nothing can truly protect your home unless you have it monitored by a professional home security system.
