No body language can be attractive than smiling. Not only can a beautiful smile make us happy, but also it enables others to feel delightful. Sometimes a smile is too powerful that it gives people suffered from disasters great courage.

A little boy named Lang Zheng, for instance, impressed and encouraged a plenty of people when a serious earthquake happened in Wen Chuan. Right after he is rescued by the soldiers from the ruin, he saluted and smiled to them. Her smile was like sunshine, that warmed people who were in sadness.

It is safe to say that without smile our life would be colorless and difficult. Smile now, or you will find that life is full of wonders.

Financial Education-Awareness Dilemma

When it comes to financial education, the majority of today's youth will regard it as a necessity for certain specific people who want to make their career in the financial world. 1. Actually, elementary financial education is a must for all, as money transaction is an essential part of our day-to-day life.

Suppose you have $100 in a saving account that pays simple interest at the rate of 2%per year. lf you leave the money in the account, how much will you have accumulated after 5 years: more than $102, exactly $102, or less than $102? The test might look simple, but only half of the people surveyed gave the correct answer.

2.The explanation goes as follows: People with low levels of financial literacy suffer from that lack of knowledge at every stage of their lives. Researchers on this subject say people with a high degree of financial literacy are more likely to plan for their retirement. 3.

On the contrary, people who have a lower degree of financial literacy tend to borrow more, accumulate less wealth, and pay more in fees related financial products. They are less likely to invest, more likely to experience difficulty with debt, and less likely to know the terms of their mortgages and other loans. Thus, the cost of this financial ignorance is very high. 4.

What  is the solution? 5. Like reading and math, financial education must become part of the core curriculum in our schools. Likewise, parents should engage in regular, constructive conversations about money matters. This will give their kids a solid foundation for financial well-being, which will keep on giving returns throughout the course of their lives.

A.Financial education must start early.

B.However, they miss an important point.

C.Why does each of us have to face a financial challenge?

D.Why does financial literacy matter so much in our society'?

E.Rich people are generally better educated on financial management.

F.Besides, these people have more than double the wealth of people who don’t.

G.For example, they frequently make late credit card payments, overspend their credit limit, etc.

The argument that human-caused carbon emissions(排放) are merely a drop in the bucket compared to greenhouse gases generated by volcanoes has been making its way around the rumor mill for years. And while it seems to be reasonable, the science just doesn't back it up.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the world's volcanoes, both on land and undersea, generate about 200 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, while our automotive and industrial activities cause some 24 billion tons of CO2 emissions every year worldwide. Despite the arguments to the contrary, the facts speak for themselves: Greenhouse gas emissions from volcanoes compose less than one percent of those generated by today's human activities.

Another indication that human emissions surpass those of volcanoes is the fact that atmospheric CO2 levels, as measured by sampling stations around the world, have gone up consistently year after year regardless of whether or not there have been major volcanic eruptions in specific years. “If it were true that individual volcanic eruptions dominated human emissions and were causing the rise in carbon dioxide concentrations, then these carbon dioxide records would be full of spikes —one for each eruption,” says Coby Beck, a journalist writing for online environmental news. “Instead, such records show a smooth and regular trend.”

Furthermore, some scientists believe that volcanic eruptions, like that of Mt.St. Helens in 1980 and Mt. Pinatubo in 1991, actually lead to short-term global cooling, not warming, as sulfur dioxide (SO2), ash and other particles in the air and stratosphere(平流层) reflect some solar energy instead of letting it into Earth's atmosphere. SO2, which converts to sulfuric acid aerosol, when it hits the stratosphere, can linger there for as long as seven years and can exercise a cooling effect long after a volcanic eruption has taken place.

Scientists tracking the effects of the major 1991 eruption of the Philippines’ Mt. Pinatubo found that the overall effect of the blast was to cool the surface of the Earth globally by some 0.5 degrees Celsius a year later, even though rising human greenhouse gas emissions and an El Nino event caused some surface warming during the 1991-1993 study period.

In an interesting twist on the issue, British researchers last year published an article in the peer reviewed scientific journal Nature showing how volcanic activity may be contributing to the melting of ice caps in Antarctica but not because of any emissions, natural or man-made. Instead, scientists Hugh Corr and David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey believe that volcanoes underneath Antarctica may be melting the continents ice sheets from below, just as warming air temperatures from human-induced emissions erode them from above.

1.According to Paragraph 1, some people argue that   .

A.their opinion is supported by science.

B.volcanoes generate most of the greenhouse gases.

C.human activities are to blame for greenhouse gases.

D.carbon emissions produced by volcanoes are increasing.

2.What does the underlined word “spikes" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Sudden increases. B.Smooth trends.

C.Stable regularities. D.Sharp declines.

3.What do the scientists mentioned in this passage believe about volcanic eruptions?

A.They brought about global warming.

B.They actually partly cooled the surface of the Earth.

C.They melted the ice sheets in Antarctic from above.

D.They dominated human emissions in greenhouse effect.

4.The purpose of the passage is to   .

A.compare the results of the studies.

B.contradict a view held by some people.

C.present new findings for greenhouse phenomenon.

D.report the effects of CO2, in greenhouse phenomenon.

A star athlete at the college where I work recently stopped by my office. After committing a few unforced errors during a weekend match, she was riven by self-criticism. “I’m at peak fitness, and I practice hard. How is this happening?” She asked.

This student believes she should be able to control the outcomes of her life by virtue of her hard work. She has a sense that hours on the field should get her exactly where she needs to go. Many students have similar mentality. When they win, they feel powerful and smart. When they fail, they are crushed by self-blame. If my achievements are mine to control, they reason, my failures must be entirely my fault, too.

We talk often about young adults struggling with failure because their parents have protected them from discomfort. But there is something else at play: a false promise that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it.

Psychologists have sourced this phenomenon to a misapplication of “mindset” research, which has found that praising children for effort will increase academic performance. A 2018 analysis found that while praising effort over ability may benefit economically disadvantaged students, it does not necessarily help everyone.

One possible explanation comes from Suniya Luthar, who argued in a research paper that for teens in wealthy, pressure-cooker communities, “it is not a lack of motivation and perseverance (毅力) that is the big problem. Instead, it is unhealthy perfectionism, and difficulty with backing off when they should, when the desire for achievements is over the top.” They push themselves onward in face of impossible goals. A 2007 study found that teens who refused to give up impossible goals showed higher levels of C-reaction protein, a marker of systemic inflammation (全身炎症) linked to heart disease and other medical conditions. A 2014 study showed a connection between the perfectionist tendencies and depression.

The cruel reality is that you can do everything in your power and still fail. Instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we adults should help students pursue success in healthier ways in part by redefining failure as a feature, not a bug, of learning. At Smith College where I teach, students are asked to explore how setbacks and missteps made them stronger or more effective. We would be wise to remind our kids that life has a way of sucker-punching (意外打击) us when we least expect it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.

1.Why was star athlete trapped by self-blame?

A.She broke down during the match.

B.She didn’t try her best in the match.

C.She believed hard work should pay off.

D.She thought she should have practiced harder.

2.What can we learn from Paragraph 5?

A.Lack of motivation and perseverance leads to teens’ failure.

B.Praising children for effort increases academic performance.

C.Children struggle with failure due to parents’ over-protection.

D.Unhealthy perfectionism causes physical and emotional stress.

3.According to the author, adults should _________.

A.help students learn from failure

B.protect students from discomfort

C.reward students for their hard work

D.explore the cause of students’ failure

4.Which of the following does the author probably agree with?

A.Effort equals achievement.

B.Motivation is the key to success.

C.Success is not always under control.

D.Effort is more important than ability.

I live in a second-floor flat with an ancient tree right on the corner of the house. House and tree have been here, side by side, for well over a century. No one really knows how old the tree is, but it was already there when builders started on the house at the beginning of the 1900s.

It was still rather young and flexible back then, so it easily welcomed the new structure into its path. It bent and adjusted itself to make room, and to find the space to grow big and strong and wise, which means that some hundred years later, the solid, strong branches of the tree reach around two full sides of my home. It’s covered in moss(苔藓), which is, in turn, crawling with all sorts of insects. I have never seen the insects, by the way, I just know that they’re there because of all the birds trying to pick them out. They are always hopping around, looking for this and that and singing songs.

I feel like I have become part of the ecosystem. When I’m eating breakfast or making dinner in the kitchen, I can look out and see a bird hopping around skillfully, gathering its own meal while I tend to mine. When I’m sitting in the living room, reading or drinking tea, I can suddenly find myself face to face with another bird. We’ll be staring at each other and, after some time, decide we can both carry on with our business, living side by side. Even as I write this—the large windows open to a lovely, soft evening—a white feather comes floating down by my side, probably from one of the resident pigeons.

As I don’t have the luxury of a garden, this tree makes me feel connected to the outdoors. Such is an ancient tree, a tree that is itself home to many other creatures—that feels different. It is as if it has adopted me and made me a part of its world, without ever asking for something in return. But if needs be, I know that it can count on me and I will protect it with all my strength.

1.The flat that author lives in is _________.

A.built in an ancient tree B.hugged by a giant tree

C.decorated with branches D.surrounded by a garden

2.In the author’s description, she implies that _________.

A.birds keep her warm company B.she has adopted the residents.

C.moss makes her flat nice and cool D.she has been bothered by the insects

3.What does the author really treasure?

A.A close-to-nature life. B.A luxurious garden.

C.A spacious house. D.A sociable neighbor.

4.Which of the following can be used to express the author’s feeling?

A.Jealous. B.Inferior.

C.Content. D.Passionate.

Graduation finally came. My classmates and I made up our mind do something. Someone suggested make a video to record our experiences at school and we agreed. Material collecting took us a whole week, during it we interviewed our teachers and took picture of every aspect of school life. The editing part after that was tough. We debated over what to put them into the video. Some disagreements were unavoidable, and the video turned out perfect. Several days later, when the video was played on a graduation ceremony, it was very popular for everyone. What a wonderfully time the students and teachers shared! That surely gives us a great sense of achievement.

It’s easy to make a fitness decision on New Year’s Eve. 1. According to a recent study, 60 percent of people give up on their decision by February. However, you can increase your chances of success with these stick-with-it strategies (策略).

●Start by asking yourself,“Why?”

A fitness decision is rarely about fitness. It’s important to ask yourself why this fitness decision is important to you on a deeper level. 2. Discover exactly what that something is and use it to push yourself to keep going when you feel like giving up.

3.

You’re far more likely to stick to your goal if you make it as specific as possible. Determine exactly what you’re going to do and when you’re going to achieve it. Deadline are necessary, if you’re serious about making your fitness decision stick.

● Start small and build motivation.

4. Instead, break your fitness goal into a series of smaller challenges, and celebrate every victory along the way. Fitness resolution is hard. Focus on the progress you’re making, no matter how small it seems.

● Focus on fun.

When it comes to making a long-term change, fun is fundamental. It’s hard to consistently force yourself to do something you hate. 5. Listen to your favorite music at the gym. Do everything you can to make your physical activity enjoyable, because that’s the only way you’re going to want to keep doing it.

A.What’s motivating you to make a change?

B.So, if you hate running, try cycling instead.

C.New Year’s Eve is a great opportunity to have fun.

D.Be specific about what you want to accomplish and set a deadline.

E.Write down your fitness decision and share it with your family and friends.

F.If you try to change too much too quickly, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

G.The challenge lies in putting it into practice and sticking with it for the long-term.

Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the classical writers like Shakespeare and Wordsworth has a great effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and triggers moments of self-examination.

Using a special machine, they monitored the brain activity of 30 volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot and others.

In the first part of the research, the brain activity of 30 volunteers was monitored as they read passages from Shakespeare’s plays, including King Lear, Othello, Coriolanus and Macbeth, and again as they read the text rewritten in a simpler form or modern language.

While reading the common texts, normal levels of electrical activity were shown in their brains. When they read the works of Shakespeare, however, the levels of activity jumped because of his use of words which were unfamiliar to them. The result of the test showed that the more challenging passages cause a greater degree of electrical activity in the brain than the common ones.

Scientists went on to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and recorded how it lit up as the readers came across unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentences in the classical works. As a result, this lightening up process of the mind lasted longer than that when volunteers read common texts, encouraging further reading.

The research also found that reading poetry especially increases activity in the right hemisphere (半球) of the brain, an area connected with “autobiographical memory”, driving the readers to think carefully about their own experiences based on what they have read. The academics said this meant the classical works of literature are more useful than self-help books.

Philip Davis, an English professor who has worked on the study in the university’s magnetic resonance center, announced this week: “Classical literature acts like a rocket-booster to the brain, which provides extra power for the brain. You may never imagine how powerful it is. The research shows such kind of literature can create new thoughts and connections in the young and the old.”

1.The underlined word “triggers” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to“_______”.

A.stops B.keeps

C.interrupts D.causes

2.Which of the following is NOT true about reading classical literature?

A.It’s helpful for readers to come up with new ideas.

B.It’s an activity that is suitable for people of all ages.

C.It makes readers’ electrical activity of brain return to normal.

D.It makes readers’ brain more active than reading common texts.

3.From the research, we can learn that _______.

A.poetry increases left-brain activity more than other literary forms

B.the readers prefer Shakespeare’s works to the other writers’works

C.the words of classical works make it hard for volunteers to read further

D.reading classical works produces a good and long-lasting effect on the mind

4.What does the author mainly tell us in this passage?

A.Classical works help the brain develop better.

B.Poetry is useful for developing people’s brain.

C.Common books are unpopular anymore.

D.Shakespeare’s plays are worth reading.

“Don’t tell anyone”. We hear these words when someone tells a secret to us. But it can be hard to keep a secret. We often tend to“spill the beans”, even if we regret it later.

According to Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may well“become a burden”. This is because people often have an“obsessive (强迫性的) and anxious urge to share it with someone”.

An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted with secrets can suffer from depression, anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail.

But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other.“Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone.”according to Shah.

He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out. But this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret.

Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you’d better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn’t give the information away. Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone’s secret you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn’t so secret anymore.

The bus screamed to a stop in Nazareth, Israel. Five Australian backpackers boarded and struck up a conversation with me. They asked typical travelers’questions - where was I going and why was I traveling alone? My plan was to travel with a friend of a friend, I explained, but when I called her that morning, she didn’t pick up and I had no other way to reach her. My stomach was in knots, but I decided to head out anyway, thinking I might run into her if I traveled to Tiberius, where we had planned to go together.

“Why don’t you travel with us?”one of the backpackers offered. They were experienced adventurers who would work for a few months, save, then travel for as long as they could. Their current plan was to explore the Middle East and Europe in three months.

It seemed risky to travel with perfect strangers, but my instinct said yes. For the next two weeks, I explored Israel with the backpackers and learned to trust my instincts in all types of new and interesting situations. When they hooked a ride, I took the bus, but when they wanted to steal into the King David Hotel’s swimming pool, I led the way. The world opened up to me because I chose to travel alone. I joined complete strangers, who became close friends. Years later, one couple from the backpacking group even flew from Sydney to Phoenix to be in my wedding. The trip was such a special experience that it gave me confidence in all areas of my life. Since then, I’ve backpacked alone across South Africa, sky-dived from 12, 000 feet in New Zealand and even moved across the U.S. with no job lined up.

On my third day wandering in Israel with my new friends, I ran into the woman I was supposed to meet. Though I was happy she was all right, I was grateful she hadn’t picked up the phone.

A.she would get along with the backpackers

B.it was risky to travel with perfect strangers

C.she ought to stay away from the backpackers

D.it could add exciting experience to her travel

4.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Some backpackers attended the author’s wedding years later.

B.The author gathered the courage to be a fulltime backpack traveler.

C.The woman missed the phone call with the purpose of traveling alone.

D.The author considered it the best decision of her life to travel on her own.

Our over-use of electricity is a big problem. It contributed to global warmingwhat is something that we really should be worried about. It is harming our environment and we need to do what we can stop it. Not only that, but as if we continue to use a same large amount of energy we will soon run out of it. How would we survive in a world with electricityI think we should start preparing for it now.     When you buy fresh-cut flowers, do you think about where they came fromYou might think they were grown somewhere nearby. The reality, though, is that the cut flower trade is increasingly International. Today, thanks to airplanes and high-tech cooling systems, even the most delicate flower be exported and sold thousands of kilometers away from where it was grown.

The Netherlands handles about 60 percent of the world’s cut flowers. And its auction houses(拍卖行)are very large---Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam, is auction house in the sense that Tokyo is a city, or Everest a mountain. About 120 soccer fields would fill its main building. Nineteen million flowers are sold here on an average day.

The Netherlands is also a world leader in developing new flower varieties. Dutch companies and the government invest a great amount of money in flower research. Their scientists look for ways to lengthen a flower’s vase life, to strengthen flowers to prevent them from being damaged while traveling, and also to strengthen the natural fragrance of the flowers.

There are also many other places with a better climate for growing flowers, and the climate of Ecuador is almost perfect. With predictable rainy periods and 12 hours of sunlight each day, Ecuador’s roses are famous for their large heads and long, straight stems(茎). Every year, Ecuador sells about 500 million flowers to the U.S. alone. The industry has brought employment opportunities and a stronger economy to the country. “My family has TV now. There are radios.” says Yolanda Quishpe, 20, who picked roses for four years.

To others, the increasingly international nature of the flower trade is very bad news. In recent years local growers in the U.S. faced huge competition from international flower companies, and many lost their businesses. Lina Hale, an independent rose grower said her father had predicted the situation in the 1980s. “I see a train coming down the track,” he warned her, “and it’s coming straight towards us.”

4.What Lina Hale’s father said suggested that ______.

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have changed the way that people interact and connect on a daily basis. They are changing the face of relationships of every kind. One of the major concerns that have caught the attention of many, is the influence that social media may be having on social anxiety disorders.

If removed from their phone for a few hours or a few days, the average person would likely feel anxious about not being “connected”. Most people have probably experienced an occasion in which they posted a creative photo, and waited to see “how many” or “retweets” they received. If this number is lower than expected, the(自我)ego is going to take a hit. There is also constant checking of the number of “followers” and “friends” that you have, and these numbers can have a direct influence on feelings of acceptance and popularity.

Anxiety can arise from feeling at a loss when faced with too much going on at one time Multitasking can very quickly lead to increased levels of anxiety. Most people can likely relate to feeling the constant need to check their phone while driving, during meals or at work. This desire is actually leading to increased levels of anxiety. The choice to be constantly connected leads to the feeling of having to always make yourself available.

Social anxiety is much different from the anxiety one feels from being offline. It’s a more serious type of anxiety resulting from the fear of being judged by others while in a social interaction. Cases can range from mild--- and are often the cause of a lot of drinking with others to severe, in which case a person may avoid parties and get-togethers altogether.

The degree to which social media and technology are changing our lives and introducing new forms of anxiety is anything but deniable(可否认的). The real question is to what extent are they introducing new disorders or increasing existing ones like social anxiety. It’s certainly a topic worth studying more to determine who is being helped, who is being harmed and how social anxiety can be dealt with.

1.What is the major focus of the text

A.Human desire for social interaction.

B.The influence of social media on anxiety.

C.Anxiety resulting from interpersonal relationships.

D.The popularity of social media in people’s daily life.

2.How does the author explain social anxiety in Paragraph 2?

A.By giving examples. B.By offering statistics.

C.By providing processes. D.By making comparisons.

3.According to the author, which of the following can lead to increased levels of anxiety?

A.Not being available for get-togethers. B.Chatting on the phone with a friend.

C.Using the phone while driving. D.Eating meals alone.

4.What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Life changes. B.Anxiety degrees.

C.New forms of anxiety. D.Social media and technology.

Ms Green’s dog was barking. It was its lunch time, but there was not any meat in the house.

Considering that there was no better way, Ms Green took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it, “Give my dog half a pound of meat.” Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently, “Take this to the butcher, and he’s going to give you your lunch today.”

Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s shop. It gave the paper to the butcher. The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady’s handwriting and pleasantly did as he was asked to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up immediately.

At midday, the dog came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After reading it, he gave it half a pound of meat once more, smiling.

The next day, the dog came again exactly at midday. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at the paper, and gave the dog its meat without any delay, for he had thought of the dog as one of his customers.

However, the dog came again at four o’clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher’s more surprise, it came for the third time at six o’clock, and brought with it a third piece of paper. The butcher felt a bit puzzled. He said to himself, “This is a small dog. Why does Ms Green give it so much meat to eat today?”

Looking at the piece of paper, he found that there were not any words on it!

1.Why did Ms Green give her dog a piece of paper with some words on it?

A.Because she wanted her dog to send the butcher a message for some meat home.

B.Because she often did something like this to solve the dog’s lunch problem.

C.Because she was fed up with the barking dog.

D.Because the butcher would give her dog a pound of meat for its lunch after reading it.

2.What can we learn from the paragraph 5&6?

A.The dog got some meat after the butcher reading the paper again.

B.The dog was easy to be hungry due to its large size.

C.It appeared that the dog knew well the paper could do it much good.

D.The dog took in the butcher several times.

3.Before reading the paper with no words, the butcher treated the dog ______.
