Recent studies show that many young people in the United States never finish high school. Some researchers say about fifteen to twenty percent of public school students do not complete their education. But many other experts and policymakers believe that for the past twenty years, the dropout rate has been around thirty percent. For Latino and black students, the numbers are even higher.Researchers say almost half of them leave schoo1.At the same time, almost half the states let students leave school before the age of eighteen without letting their parents know.

Finding a good job without a high school education is _________.A recent study found that almost half of all dropouts aged sixteen to twenty—four did not have a job.The lack of high school education can also lead to other problems. An estimated two—thirds of prisoners in the United States dropped out of high schoo1.

The main reason why many students drop out of school is that they are failing. Many are bored with their classes or feel disconnected from their school and teachers. Some students feel that educators place low expectations on them.

There have been efforts to increase graduation rates through education reforms during the past twenty years. Some communities are working on dropout prevention programs. These include alternative (其他的) high schools to meet special needs. In addition, experts suggest “early warning systems’’ to help identify young school children at the risk of dropping out of high schoo1.They say schools should also keep regular contact with parents, especially if their children are missing school often.

China news, Beijing, Feb. 9 – Housing price in China has always aroused heated discussions among property developers and ordinary Chinese. To many property developers and local government officials, housing price in China is still low compared with many developed countries. However, the average housing price in the United States is only 8,000 yuan per square meter, while in China, it is even higher than in the United States. This shows that there are some bubbles(泡沫) in Chinese real estate market, the International Finance News reported.

Although the average price of residential houses in the United States, after converted to Renminbi, is about 8,000 yuan per square meter, the houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses. If US property developers sell their houses according to the building area, then the housing price will be even lower than 8,000 yuan per square meter. In most big Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, houses are sold at a price even higher than those in the US.

The high housing sales price in large cities in China proves that Chinese real estate market does have some bubbles. Moreover, Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities. Furthermore, it should be noted that American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese people. How can the Chinese afford to buy a house which is even more expensive than that sold in US?

At the beginning of 2007, Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public. Now in order to reduce the high housing prices, the government can regulate(控制) the real estate market by raising tax on property industry and controlling the release of loans and lands to property developers. At the same time, the government should allow people to build more houses through various fund-raising channels, such as funds collected from buyers or raised by working units. By applying these multiple means, it is expected that the high housing prices can be lowered.

1.What is the average housing price per square meter in China?

     A. 8000 yuan      B. 10000 yuan

     C. 7000 yuan      D. It’s not mentioned here

2.Which of the following does NOT support the idea that the average housing price in China

is even higher than in the United States?

    A. Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality,

  environment and supporting facilities.

    B. American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese

 people.

    C. The houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property

developers do when they sell their houses.

D. There are more people who need houses in China.

3.What is the main idea of this passage?

A The housing price in China is so high that the government should do something useful to

 prevent it.

    B. There are some bubbles in Chinese real estate market

    C. The average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States

D. Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public.

4.How many measures are mentioned in the last paragraph in order to reduce the high housing

 prices?

A. Four            B. Three              C. Five               D. Two

Question: Why is it so hard for some people to apologize after they’ve done something wrong? I have made every effort to persuade my uncle to be nice to people that he knows he’s hurt.  71   How I wish things would be better if he’d just say he’s sorry and ask them to forgive him.

Answer: 72  It’s just easier for him to pretend nothing happened than to face the embarrassment of admitting he was wrong. You’ve probably done the same thing yourself at some time. In fact, most of us have. Furthermore, what if others won’t forgive him even if he apologizes?

73  Pride blinds us to our mistakes or faults. Or at least it makes us pay less attention to their seriousness.

Pride also makes us unwilling to admit to others that we were wrong. Perhaps we’re afraid they will look down on us if we admit it.  74

But others see through our pride. And things would be far better if we admitted our faults and asked for forgiveness.  75

Now you know why your uncle refuses to apologize, talk to him again. Help him to learn how to apologize and ask for forgiveness from others.

    A. But a deeper reason is pride.

    B. But he just refuses to do that.

    C. We may even hope that somehow they will overlook it.

    D. As a result, you would offend others and hurt their feelings.

    E. There are a variety of reasons for your uncle’s refusal to apologize.

    F. Otherwise our pride would only hurt us and cause conflict with others.

G. One reason your uncle finds it hard to apologize could be embarrassment.

The Carnival of Brazil is an annual festival held 46 days before Easter, especially famous for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to regret and prepare for Christ’s death and coming back to life.

Modern Brazilian Carnival dates back to Rio de Janeiro in 1641. It originally copied the European form of the festival, later taking in elements of Native American and African cultures.

In the late 19th century, the strings (弦乐器) were introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were pageant (游行) groups that paraded through city avenues performing on instruments and dancing. Today they are known as blocks, consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes or special T-shirts with themes or logos. Blocks are generally connected with particular neighborhoods; they include both a music group and a lot of revelers.

Block parades have become an expressive feature of Rio’s Carnival. Today, they number more than 100 and the groups increase each year. Blocks can be formed by small or large groups of revelers with a clear title. Before the show, they gather in a square, then parade in sections of the city, often near the beach.

Carnival time in Rio is very interesting, but is also the most expensive time to visit Rio. Hotel rooms and other lodgings (住宿) can be up to four times more expensive than the regular rates. There are big crowds at some locations and life is far from ordinary in many parts of town.

Derrius Quarles, 19, had an unhappy childhood. But the Chicago teen didn’t give up. He tried his best and won $1 million in college scholarships (奖学金)! Now Derrius is a successful college student with a bright future.

Mom noticed that something was wrong when I started getting so thirsty. I’d have a lot to drink before bed, which was unusual for me. One time, I opened a big container of apple juice and kept refilling my glass. Before I knew it, I’d drunk the entire container! My mom called my doctor. I then had a few blood tests, and the results were certain — I had diabetes (糖尿病), which meant that the amount of sugar in my blood was very high. That can be dangerous, so I had to learn how to control my blood-sugar level.

My eating habits had to change in a big way. With diabetes, I can’t eat a lot of sugar or carbohydrates (碳水化合物). I have to figure out exactly how much sugar I plan to eat, and then I get an injection of insulin (注射胰岛素) before the meal to help my body process the food. Also, I test my blood-sugar level often. I’m always trying to keep my blood sugar at a healthy level. The level can drop when I exercise, but that doesn’t keep me out of gym class or off the basketball court — I just keep some juice boxes around to boost my blood sugar if I need to.

It’s a lot of work — and not a lot of fun — to keep track of everything, but I’ve gotten used to my new habits. I was a little scared at first because I wasn’t sure how my life would change. Once I knew what I needed to do, though, it wasn’t a big deal. My life is different now from what it was before, but it has become completely regular to me.

1.The first paragraph is mainly about _____.

    A. who found the author had diabetes

    B. the author’s life before having diabetes

    C. how the author was found to have diabetes

    D. the author’s eating habits before having diabetes

2.What did the author do after knowing she had diabetes?

    A. She stopped playing basketball in the gym.

    B. She controlled her blood-sugar level strictly.

    C. She stopped eating food with natural sugar.

    D. She tested her blood-sugar level before every meal.

3.What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Increase.      B. Control.      C. Absorb.     D. Test.

4.What’s the author’s attitude toward her having diabetes now?

A. Worried.     B. Frightened.    C. Pessimistic.  D. Positive.

Then they’d pull out their cameras, and just  39  I was about to say “cheese”, they’d run over to my perfectly perfect little brothers and take  40  of them. At that time I was thinking, “Why can’t I be little again so I can be the one getting all the 41 ?

When my aunt Camille got  42 , my mom spent forever finding the perfect clothes for them. On the day of the  43 , my twin brothers had the cutest and prettiest clothes. And then there was me, just sitting and watching in my  44  dress.

After the ceremony, all I  45  was how sweet and lovely the twins were.

I definitely  46  that they were wonderful, but I couldn’t help feeling  47  and invisible (看不见的).

There was a big   48  after the wedding. Aunt Camille and her nice new  49  had the first dance, and then everyone started  50  like crazy including me. I  51   my uncomfortable dress shoes, and I danced and danced and danced! It  52  one of the most fun times I’ve had in my entire life.

The very  53  part was when my aunt and I took my twin brothers by the hands and  54  them some dance moves. Teaching them was such a cool thing. I 55  then what a huge waste of time feeling jealous is when you can kick off your shoes and enjoy life!
