How to Become a Better Student

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

1. Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

2. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

3. Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

4. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

5. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.

There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A. Explore All Your Talents

B. Be Ready for the Up-coming Competition

C. Set a Down-to-Earth Goal

D. Prepare Yourself Emotionally

E. Look for a Competitive College

F. Consider Talent Search Programs in Junior High

Many aspects of college planning are the same for most college-bound students. However, if you’re in any academically gifted and talented program, you have additional things to think about. Here are some actions you should consider.

66.______

Talent search programs provide educational opportunities for seventh-and eighth-graders who are mathematically or verbally talented. Some of these programs use SAT scores to identify academically gifted students. Although most students take the SAT in junior or senior year of high school, gifted and talented student often take it earlier.

67. ______

Many gifted students have the potential to succeed in multiple academic areas. Don't miss opportunities by focusing too early on one that you excel in; carefully examine all your strengths and interests. Discover what you really like to study and the topics you may want to pursue in college. Pursue your interest and passion for learning to the fullest extent possible while you’re still in high school.

68. ______

Gifted students often feel that they have to be accepted by very competitive colleges to be considered successful. And while a competitive college may be the right place for you, don’t let selectivity be the only factor. The most important aspect of college planning is finding a college that’s a good fit.

69. ______

Many gifted students are used to being at the top of their junior high and high school classes. Be prepared to meet other gifted students in college — students who do just as well as you, or better, in the classroom. It can be unsettling. Handle it by staying focused on your own studies and skills and aiming to do your personal best.

70. ______

Although your academic qualifications and abilities may exceed those of your high school classmates, your age is the same as theirs. High school is a time for adolescence, while college requires emotional maturity. A 15-year-old high school graduate may not be prepared to live on a campus 1,000 miles from home with other students who are 18 and older. Think about what you are ready for emotionally, as well as academically, when you’re narrowing down your college list.

It’s a nightmare for Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST): within a week, two students committed suicide by jumping off dorm buildings.

Officials from the university are reluctant to give interviews.

“We had a hard time calming down students who were shocked at the suicides,” said Zhang Jingyuan, one official of HUST.

“Media coverage may arouse some students’ negative emotions again.Suicide can be contagious,” Zhang said.

The university reacted promptly to the first suicide on October 23.

Advisors and class leaders conducted dorm-to-dorm checks to find students suffering depression. Then psychologists offered one-on-one counseling to them.

Notice boards publicizing tips for identifying peers’ mental problems and offering help were set up in front of dorm buildings.Leaflets carrying similar information were handed out to each dorm.

However, the second suicide came seven days later.

Both students were described as men of few words.Their schoolmates didn’t see anything to indicate suicide.

Zhang revealed that the two students had been bothered by mental disorders. But the school didn’t know this until the students’ close friends outside school and their parents unveiled the truth after the suicides.

According to Zhang, there are only three full-time counselors working in the university’s counseling center for its 60,000 students. He complained: “It’s unrealistic to rely only on counselors to detect students’ mental problems.”

“Education for life helps students respect and love life so they won’t resort to ending their lives when they have difficulties,” said Hu.“生命教育可以帮助学生尊重、热爱生命,这样一来,当他们遇到困难的时候就不会选择结束生命了,” 胡毅安说。

According to Hu,the principles can be incorporated into everyday teaching.

Hu is also concerned that some universities are conveying discriminatory message that will hold back students from seeking help.

When HUST conducted the dorm-to-dorm examination, students with poor academic performance were paid special attention. In March,Peking University also released a controversial policy, which required teachers to have a chat with students “with biased thinking”.

However,Hu suggested that students step out of their comfort zone to seek real-life communication.

Imagine that the genome (基因组) is a book. The book consists of 23 chapters with thousands of stories made up of paragraphs, words and letters on different levels. There are one billion words in the book, as long as 800 Bibles; if I read the genome out to you at the rate of one word per second for eight hours a day, it would take me centuries; if I wrote out the human genome, one letter per millimeter, my text would be as long as the River Danube. This is a huge volume, a book of great length, but it all fits inside an extremely small cell nuclear(细胞核) that fits easily upon the head of a pin.

The idea of the genome as a book is not, strictly speaking, even a metaphor. It is true to a great extent.A book is a piece of digital information, written in one-directional form and defined by a code that translates a small alphabet of signs into a large dictionary of meanings through the order of their groupings. So is a genome. The only difference is that all English books read from left to right, while some parts of the genome read from left to right while some from right to left, but never both at the same time.

While English books are written in words of different lengthens using twenty-six letters, genomes are written entirely in words of three-letter length, using only four letters, and instead of being written on flat pages, they are written on long chains of DNA molecules (分子).

The genome is a very clever book, because in the right condition it can both photocopy itself and read itself.

1.How do human genomes read according to the passage?___________

A.Only from left to right.

B.Only from right to left.

C.From both directions at the same time.

D.From one direction at a time.

2.We can learn from the passage that the human genome ________.

A.is as long as the River Danube

B.can be easily placed on the head of a pin

C.is coded with an alphabet of four letters

D.is smart enough to read and take photos of itself

3.It can be concluded that the passage is mainly written for ______.

A.specialists in the field

B.general readers

C.natural scientists

D.readers with professional knowledge

4.The real purpose of the author’s comparison of the genome to a book is _____.

A.to focus on the differences between the two

B.to lay emphasis on the similarities between the two

C.to simplify the concept of the human genome

D.to give an exact description of the human genome

It is reported that conservation groups in North America have been arguing about the benefits and dangers of wolves. Some groups believe wolves should be killed. Other people believe wolves must be protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness (荒野)

For Killing Wolves

In Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, 1aws were established to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur. So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.

A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family. People in the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the wilderness plant life. When the deer can’t find enough food, they die.

If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey (猎物) will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too. So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance the ecology(生态平衡). If we killed more wolves, we would save them and their prey from dying out. We’d also save some farm animals.

In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food. Farmers want the government to send biologists to study the problem. They believe it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small wolf population.

Against Killing Wolves

If you had lived long ago, you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf. According to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food. Even today, the stories of the “big bad wolf'” will not disappear.

But the fact is wolves are afraid of people, and they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell. When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young, or the sick and injured .The strongest survive .No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had lived. And has always been a law of nature.

Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves, we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in the wilderness plant life.

The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live are being used by people. Even if wilderness land is not used directly for human needs, the wolves can’t always find enough food. So they travel to the nearest source, which is often a farm. Then there is danger. The“big bad wolf”has arrived! And everyone knows what happens next.

1.Some people are against killing wolves because ________.

A.there are too many deer in the wilderness

B.wolves are afraid of people and never attack people

C.wolves help to keep the ecological balance in the wilderness

D.there is too small a wolf population in the wilderness

2.According to those against killing wolves, when wolves eat other animals, ________.

A.they might help this kind of animals survive in nature

B.they disturb the ecological balance in the wilderness

C.they never eat strong and healthy ones

D.they always go against the law of nature

3.The last sentence “And everyone knows what happens next” implies that in such cases _______.

A.wolves will find enough food sources on farms

B.people will leave the areas where wolves can live

C.farm animals will be in danger and have to be shipped away

D.wolves will kill people and people will in turn kill them

It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists between all forms of life. No living thing can exist by itself. It is part of a system in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the nature order, this will almost certainly bring about changes in some other parts.

The cutting of forests reduced the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals led to the wide-spread poisoning of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean hurt life in the sea, while waste gases changed the chemical balance of the atmosphere and shut out some of the sun’s necessary life-giving rays.

And so we could go on adding more examples until in despair(绝望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control these harmful human activities. Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate needs, but he is not so clever at looking far ahead, or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be. Man may well destroy himself because of his silly action.

1.The first paragraph tells us that _____.

A.all living things in nature depend on each other

B.everything in nature can’t exist without the help of man

C.man has known the importance of the balance of nature for a long time

D.no living thing can live naturally

2.In the second paragraph the examples given are used to prove that _____.

A.all forms of life belong to a system in which all the parts can be changed for one another

B.it is only during the last few years that man has generally known the balance of nature

C.there are some living things which can exist by themselves without change

D.we can’t change one form of life without destroying the balance of nature

3.The last paragraph suggests that in order to get his immediate benefits(利益) _____.

A.man is always anxious to control his activities within limits

B.man is always too eager in planning for distant future

C.man often fails to think about their future results of his action

D.man often feels that he will have to give up in despair

4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Cutting down woods does little harm to human beings.

B.Man has to pay much more attention to the future results of his present action.

C.Oxygen comes from forests.

D.The passage tells us to try our best to get as much as possible immediately.

After years of hearing drivers complain about scratches on their cars, Japan's Nissan Motor Company has officially announced the next big thing---a paint that not only resists scratches and scrapes, but actually repairs itself within a few days.

The new material, developed by Nippon Paint Company, contains an elastic rubbery-like resin(弹性树脂) that is able to heal minor marks caused by car wash equipment, parking lot encounters, road debris (石头碎片) or even on-purpose destruction. The automaker admits its results vary depending on the temperature and the depth of the damage, but adds this is the only paint like it in the world, and tests prove it works. Minor scratches, the most common type, are said to slowly fade over about a week. And once they're gone, there is no trace that they were ever there. The special paint is said to last for at least three years after it is first applied, but there is no word yet on whether more can be added after that period.

Nissan claims car washes are the worst offenders for this type of damage, accounting for at least 80 percent of all incidents. But the complete auto-healing won't come without scratching your wallet. The vehicle maker notes the special paint adds about $ 100 U.S. to the price of a car. It plans to use its new chemical mixture only on its X - Trail SUVs in Japan for now, as it looks for a more widespread presentation. And while plans to offer the feature overseas haven't been made yet, if it's a hit there, you can be almost sure market forces will drive it to these shores, as well.

1.From the article, we can find that_______.

A.the paint has already been used on cars by now

B.it beats other products of its kind in its lengthy effect

C.car damage is mainly caused by scratches and scrapes

D.marketing this paint in Europe is not under way

2.The paint used on cars can______.

A.last 3 years before it is re-applied again

Early one morning the sub-inspector at a station at the other end of the town rang me. An elephant was damaging the town. Would I please come and do something about it? I did not know what I could do, but I got onto a horse and started out. I took my gun, maybe too small to kill an elephant, but I thought the noise might scare him. Various local people stopped me on the way and told me about the elephant's doings. It was not, of course, a wild elephant, but a tame one. It had been chained up but last night it had broken its chain and escaped. Its owner had set out to run after it, but had taken the wrong direction. He was now twelve hours' journey away, and in the morning the elephant had suddenly appeared in the town. It had already destroyed somebody's bamboo hut (棚屋), killed a cow and turned over fruit¬stalls. I came round the hut and saw a man's dead body sprawling in the mud. He was an Indian, and he could not have been dead many minutes. The people said that the elephant caught him with its trunk, put its foot on his back and   grounded him into the earth. This was the rainy season and he was lying on his stomach in the soft mud, the peacebreaker standing beside, looking innocent. As I lifted my gun, I hesitated a few seconds. Then I fired. That was a shot for him. You could see the pain of it knocking the last strength from his legs. But in falling he seemed for a moment to rise, his trunk reaching skyward like a tree. He trumpeted, for the first and only time. And then down he came, with a crash that shook the ground.

Last week, I bought an alarm system for about $ 450. It consisted of a control unit with three small units. I put the control unit in the sitting-room and fastened the other units by the front door, back door and living-room windows. The instructions told us to choose three numbers, so we chose 4, 9 and 1, the last three numbers of our telephone number.

Now I must explain how the alarm works:

l There is a power siren(警报器) in the control unit. It makes a very loud noise.

2 Each of the small units sends out beams or rays in different directions. If anything moves, it breaks a beam. This sends a signal to the control unit. The siren makes a noise which you can hear 50 meters away.

3. When we go to bed, I press the three buttons numbered 4, 9 and 1. Then we have 30 seconds to get out of the room before the alarm starts to work.

That night I slept soundly because I was sure that no burglar(夜贼) could get into our house. However, at about 2:10 a. m., I woke up and heard the siren. “There must be a burglar in the house,” Mary said. “What shall we do?”“I’ll go and see who’s there,” I said. “Stay here. Don’t make a noise.”I went downstairs quietly. When I reached the living-room, I switched on my torch and looked round the room. Then I turned the light on. I switched the siren off and searched the rooms downstairs. There was nothing wrong except that the back door was unlocked. I locked it, reset the alarm and went back to bed. About an hour later, the alarm started again. I jumped out of bed, fell over a chair in the dark and bumped into the bedroom door. Mary woke up and started hitting me with a torch. “Hey! Wait a minute!” I whispered. “It’s only me. I’m going downstairs to see what’s wrong.”I went down into the living-room and listened for a moment. The only sound I could hear was the siren. I turned on the light and then switched the siren off. As I did so, I glanced across at the curtains in front of the windows. I saw a house lizard (a kind of small animal) disappear behind the curtains.“Oh!” I said to myself. “That’s our burglar. ”When the lizard moved, it started the siren. I guessed that the alarm had been made in Europe, where there are no house lizards. Well. I won’t finish this story but if you want an alarm system free of charge, let me know. I’ll send you ours. We bought a dog this morning. It knows the difference between a lizard and a burglar.
