As a kid,I wanted to be a naturalist. When I got to college, I chose what I thought was a more practical path, studying physics along with public policy. That combination led me to atmospheric sciences. Now I'm studying low clouds.

But I didn't really notice low clouds until I started my study at the University of Washington, in Seattle. That city had a lot of low clouds. I suddenly realized how important their reflection of heat back into space was for Earth's climate. I continued studying how clouds at the University of Colorado in Boulder. There I earned my PhD.

Seattle's skies may be home to plenty of low clouds, but there are even better places to spot these little clouds. The greatest gatherings tend to occur off the coasts of places like Namibia, in Africa, and northern Chile. These places are home to some of Earth's driest deserts. And I like visiting such places.

The more I learned about these little clouds, the more fascinating I found them. I'm really interested in the various ways these low clouds respond to their environment. Because there are so many low clouds and they help keep Earth cool by reflecting(反射) heat, anything that affects them can also affect overall climate. It feeds back to the whole energy balance of the planet.

Lately I've been exploring how smoke that drifts(漂浮 )over clouds might change the way that these clouds absorb or reflect sunlight. Such smoke -from burning trees and grasses-can drift thousands of kilometers. If that smoke affects clouds, it might also affect climate. Last year, I spent a month on distant Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean setting up instruments to track the interaction(相互作用) between low clouds there and smoke from southern Africa.

I appreciate the diversity in my work. Besides the occasional trip to distant islands, I also teach and work with other scientists to better understand Earth's climate system. Along the way, I'm helping bring one type of low clouds to the attention it deserves.

C.To set up instruments for other scientists

D.To study the influence of low clouds on climate.

4.What does the underlined word"diversity "in the last paragraph mean?

Honesty is the best policy. We may agree that admitting mistakes and behaving in a genuine way is the right way to lead our lives, but is there something in our human nature that makes us immoral? For example, in some shops and car parks you can find an honesty box — a box where you pay for something by putting money in it — but it relies on you putting the right amount of cash in. This relies on people being honest and not trying to cheat but it does provide a temptation to get away with not paying the full amount.

Philip Graves, a psychologist, suggests that this temptation is part of our evolution. He says, “We have evolved with the ability to be dishonest. It’s part of our evolutionary psychological make-up because if we can gain an advantage over the people around us, we have a greater chance of surviving.”

So why do we place such importance on being honest if we benefit from being dishonest? It’s because it is selfish behavior. If everybody acted selfishly and dishonestly all the time, the world would be a very unpleasant place. As Philip Graves says, “There is a balance to strike between the extent to which we can feather our own nest, so to speak, and the risk of being ostracized (排斥) by the group.” So, for societies to work together we need to trust each other and therefore we need to be honest.

Being trustworthy with money is of course vital for an economy to survive. But being honest with words is another matter, saying what we think to someone can get us into hot water. However, a new anonymous messaging app has been designed that lets anyone with a link to your profile (简介) send you a message without knowing who it’s from. The app now has 300 million users which perhaps indicates how honest we really like to be — but in all honesty, do you want to know what people think about you? Is honesty always the best policy?

1.What does an honesty box require people to do?

A.Get the change out of it freely. B.Put the correct amount of money in it.

C.Donate the pocket money to others. D.Pay a larger amount of money.

2.According to Philip Graves, being dishonest________.

A.is a disadvantage B.should be advocated

C.is part of our evolution D.helps people survive

3.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A.The reason for being honest. B.The benefit of being dishonest.

C.The outcome of selfishness. D.The importance of group work.

During lunchtime, Emma suggested going to the zoo to feed the animals and her mom agreed.

“We’ll stop by the bakery and pick some bread up. Now hurry and eat and then we’ll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She’ll be here any minute,’ mom said.

Emma ate her lunch and then ran into her room to get her shoes. The problem was that she could only find one of them. She looked under her bed, but all she could see were dirty towels and pants. She moved some of her toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find her shoe. After she’d checked everywhere in her room, she ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?”she asked.

Her mom thought about how many times she’d told Emma to clean her room up. She whispered something to Emma’s grandma and then said to Emma, “You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take Ryan to the zoo. Grandma will stay here with you.”

“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the zoo,”Emma cried. “I’m sorry, Emma. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you ignored me. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not doing as I asked. You will stay home.”

Emma ran into her bedroom, crying. Her mom came to the door and said, “Emma, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told grandma not to give you any sweets until you finish the work.” She went out to the car with Ryan and Emma’s dad and then they drove away.

The Gift of Forgiveness

The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his old 69 Chevy Malibu convertible. What did I know about classic cars? For me, the important thing was that Hannah and I could _______ around Tucson with the top down.

Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much _______. That summer she _______ with a modeling agency, doing catalog and runway work.

Environmental pollution kills 1.7 million children under the age of five every year worldwide. This is according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO warns that child deaths will increase greatly if pollution continues to worsen.

The most common causes of death among children aged one month to five years are diarrhea, malaria and pneumonia. This is according to the WHO.  1. . This means providing access to safe water and sanitation, limiting exposure to dangerous chemicals, and improving waste management.

2.The WHO estimates that air pollution is responsible for about 6.5 million premature, or early deaths every year. That number includes nearly 600,000 deaths of children under age five. Most of these deaths take place in developing countries.

Air pollution is a leveler between rich and poor, according to WHO environment and health chief Maria Neira. 3.And one of the most important ways to reduce air pollution is to produce cleaner fuels for cooking and heating. “Almost half of the world population is using dirty fuels for cooking, heating, and lighting at home. And, this is affecting very much mothers who are staying and cooking at home, but the children who are around mothers -- they are exposed as well. ” Early exposure to harmful pollutants can lead to increased risk of chronic respiratory disease, asthma, heart disease, stroke and cancer later in life.

Cleaning up how the world cooks, heats and lights homes and other buildings is a big- picture goal. The WHO is advising government departments and industries such as construction and the health sector to work together to clean up their environment.

4.. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has the following suggestions

• Avoid walking where there is a high volume of vehicle traffic.

5.

• Limit your time outside if you live in an area that issues warnings about air quality.

• Wear high-grade, rated face masks tightly to the face when air quality is poor.

• Remove your clothes and wash immediately after entering your house if you live or commute in a very polluted area.

A. However, of all the environmental pollutants, air pollution is being called the most dangerous.

B. But what can individuals do to limit our family's exposure to air pollution?

C. Therefore, the WHO stresses that governments around the world need to take the lead on ensuring that children grow up in a clean environment.

D. The organization also says reducing environmental risks can prevent such deaths.

E. A polluted environment is a deadly one—particularly for young children.

F. Everybody, she says, needs to breathe.

G. Equip homes with air filters and air conditioning units.

Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay, Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the U. S. top out at an average of 19.42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.

“5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age,” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.

Augmented reality glasses and virtual headset haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or perhaps even replace — smartphones.

Ericsson stated at February’s Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power.

But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure construction so 5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities.

1.What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 1?

A.The lighting-fast speed of 5G.

B.The expectation of 5G world.

C.The difference between 4G and 5G.

D.The internet-connected devices in our life.

2.What does the underlined word “emblem” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Exhibition. B.Success.

C.Symbol. D.Explanation.

3.We can infer from the text that ________.

A.5G world won’t come without AR glasses

B.5G helps to create the artificial intelligence vehicle

C.Apple company is developing AR glasses worldwide

D.Tech companies will face the fact that smartphones may be replaced

4.What will the author probably tell us next?

A.How to fully expand 5G coverage.

B.Smart glasses will become faster and lighter.

C.Why 5G isn’t concentrated in big cities.

D.The importance of infrastructure construction.

Rumors (谣言): we've all heard some and we've all spread some. In more traditional times they shook entire families. Today, they travel differently because the way we share information has also changed.

The fact is that rumors have great potential to upset things, whether socially or personally. We don't enjoy being on the receiving end of one, since they usually don't have good intentions. They are somewhat veiled (掩饰的) messages.

Normally rumors are oral messages: word of mouth. The paradox (自相矛盾) is that there is no evidence to support rumors, but the more people share it, the more they see it as true. To finish explaining rumors, we think that they follow certain very clear laws. Secrecy: The source is unknown. There is also a proven phenomenon that human beings usually forget the source of a message before they forget its content. Certainty: We hardly question rumors simply because of the mental effort involved. On the other hand, no one likes to doubt a person who convinces us that the information they spread is true. Change: It acts like a tree. New rumors branch out to fill in the gaps left by the first rumor.

Another property (属性) of rumors is that they tend to become viral. Each receiver is at the same time a potential transmitter (传输者) of the information. The receiver often adds their own opinion. Their manner and tone of transmitting it also changes it.

How can we end rumors? The answer is as simple as it is impossible: preventing people from communicating. A more realistic response is equally difficult, although less than the first one. It is that we should be critical of the information we receive. We should ask ourselves if the source is reliable. Ask (if possible) the person you heard it from whether they also trust the information. We should also think about if the rumor benefits someone, and if that someone started the rumor.

One rumor to be especially cautious of is a rumor about groups relatively unable to defend themselves. That's why we say, "History is always told by the winners." The first payment the defeated must make is to accept the victor's version of the story.

1.What can we learn about rumors?

A.We have all heard some and believed them.

B.We're happy to be the receiving end of them.

C.They may have negative influence on society.

D.They often hide good intentions in the messages.

2.How are rumours like a tree?

A.Rumours keep changing, just as trees change their colour.

B.Rumours are deeply rooted in reality, like tree roots in the earth.

C.New rumours have gaps, like the space between tree branches.

D.New rumours grow out of the original, like branches out of a trunk.

3.What does the underlined word ‘viral’ in Para 4 probably mean?

A.Something easily spread.

B.Something acceptable.

C.Something easily defended.

D.Something beneficial.

4.Which of the following may the author agree with?

A.It is easy to prevent people from spreading rumors.

B.People are often active in judging the rumors critically.

C.We should think about the hidden message of the rumors.

D.Stories told by the victors are usually better worth trusting.

Robots have taken over many of America’s factories. But can they pick a strawberry? “It’s really hard for robots to match what humans can do,” says Bob Pizter, an expert on robots.

Any 4-year-old kid can pick a strawberry, but machines can’t seem to figure it out. Pizter says the hardest thing for them is finding the fruit. Pizter’s strawberry-picking robot is rolling into a strawberry field. This well-designed device drives itself. It’s as big as a bus, long enough to straddle (跨越) a dozen rows of strawberries at once. Powerful computers are sitting on top. Underneath, there are high-definition cameras to find the berries, and robotic claws ready to pick them.

“Nobody’s telling it what to do,” explains Paul Bissett, the chief operating officer of Harvest CROO Robotics. “It’s remembering its path down the row. It’s remembering where all these plants are.” It knows all this, thanks to the super-accurate GPS. Its computer brain contains a map showing the locations of every strawberry plant in the field. The action of machinery is truly impressive, but the baskets are still practically empty. Pitzer says the robots are able to find and pick more than 50 percent of ripe berries. That’s not yet up to human standards. A typical worker, he says, manages to pick anywhere from 60 to 90 percent of the berries. Also, he admits, the machine is slower than human hands. On the other hand, it has some advantages. It can work right through the night. Two years later, he says, this machine will be in the fields working for real. “There are weaknesses to work out, but it’s getting there. We’re close.” he says.

Strawberry companies are putting millions of dollars into this project. The reason, Gary Wishnatzki, the owner of Wish Farms says, is that it’s getting more and more difficult to find enough people to pick his berries. “The fact of the matter is, if we don’t solve the problem of this labor shortage with automation, the industry is facing a big challenge ahead. The price of fruit is going to be much higher,” Jose Santos, the leader of the farm, says.

Jose is pretty convinced, though, that picking strawberries will always require people. The machines will break down, he points out. In fact, he’s looking on the bright side. “You could afford to give people a day off if you have machines behind you,” he says.

1.According to the passage, the strawberry-picking robot __________.

If you live in a place where most people speak the language you are learning, you may use the language for several hours each day. So it may become part of your “inner speech.” In other words, you start thinking in that language. Your mind stops trying to translate things from your native language into the second language. But most of the English learners live in places where English is not the main language. This may be true for you. You may not have many chances to practice English. You may even be self-taught.

Thinking in English really helps! It is not very difficult, but it does need practice. Here we will share some mental exercises. A good first step is to think in words. Look around you. What do you see? In your head, try to name each object in your surroundings. Charles Thomas has taught English for over 10 years. He tells his students to name the things that they see around them, wherever they are.

Another exercise Thomas suggest is describing in your mind objects you don’t know the words for. An example would be if you couldn’t think of the word “garage”. Thomas says, “If you’re looking at your house and you see your garage, but you can’t think of the name in English. You can say, ‘The place inside where I put my car’ or you can say, ‘It’s next to my house. I keep things there.’”

The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences. For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like, “It’s such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.” You can also describe your daily activities. Thomas asks his students to describe their day using the simple present verb form. So, they would think to themselves things like, “I put on my shirt” and “He drives the bus.”

How much time should you spend on these exercises? Thomas says you do a little every day. “When you make things a habit, then it just pops up into your mind without thinking and then, before you know it, really, you’re thinking in English.”

1.When a second language becomes part of your “inner speech”, ________.

A.most people around you speak the language

B.you start thinking in the language

C.you translate things from your native language into it

D.you learn the language by yourself

2.“The place inside where I put my car” is an example for ________

A.naming objects in your surroundings

B.thinking in simple sentences

C.describing objects you don’t know the words for

D.describing your daily activities

3.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Spend your time on exercises

B.Teach yourself a second language

C.Train your brain to think in English

D.Practice English wherever you are

“Your future depends on many things, but most on you.Yes, I can't agree more to this view. It's true that our future determined by many things, such as opportunities and help from others, but their own attitude, determination, and hard work play a more important role.In other words, we are the masters of our own future.

Take Abraham Lincoln for an example. He was born in a poor family, which only received a limited education in his childhood.Yet through his painstaking efforts, he then changes not only his own fate but also the history of America.Even to this day, Lincoln is regarded as one of the most inspired figures in the world.

However, I firmly believe that our future is in our own hand.

What makes one person feel loved isn't always the same for another. In fact, everyone understands and receives love in a specific language—four to be exact —which speaks more deeply to you than all the others. Since we all give and receive love differently, discovering each other’s language promotes a healthy relationship.1.

Language one: Words of Acknowledgement

2.even short and simple words are effective. Some examples: “Thanks for taking out the garbage”, “I appreciate that you made me dinner,” or “That was nice of you to fold my laundry.” Sincere words of kindness mean a lot to this person.

Language two:3.

Actions speak louder than words. It's what you do that eases your partner's burden of responsibility. These service acts could be opening a door, doing their laundry, or picking up a prescription. These acts show that you care about your partner and your life together.

Language three: Quality Time

It is about spending time with each other and giving each other your undivided attention.4.. Here, you put down that phone plus step away from TV, and any other distractions. You listen, communicate, and share meaningful conversations together.

Language fourPhysical Touch

It is a direct way to communicate affection; it's healing, reassuring, and calming. People who speak this love language enjoy any kind of physical touch whether it is hand-holding, kissing pats on the back or hugs.5.

A. Acts of Service.

B. Housework Matters.

C. The appreciation doesn’t have to be complicated.

D. They communicate and emphasize love without words.

E. Read on to learn and understand more about the four 1anguages of love

African swine fever has wiped out a third of China's pig population. Now government officials are discussing dramatic steps to stabilize the world’s largest pork market. Pork is a huge deal in China. The country is home to half of all the pigs on the planet .The meat is a staple of the Chinese diet, which means its scarcity could damage China's social stability. The outbreak of swine fever also threatens the global pork supply chain.

While Chinese authorities have already made plans to support the pig farms and families who may struggle with soaring prices, they re stepping up efforts to deal with the crisis.

The price sellers pay for pork has risen nearly 70% in the last year. And the average price that distributors pay suppliers was up 90% in the last week of August compared to a year ago, according to government data. Analysts say prices could yet go even higher.

The government on Wednesday announced more measures to encourage pig farmers and producers to breed more baby pigs. But they may need to go even further to fill the gap. Authorities have promised to release the government's emergency reserves of frozen pig meat if necessary. Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng said last week that the agency will “closely monitor market developments” before it makes such a decision.

It's difficult to overstate the scale of the problem. As of July, China had lost more than 100 million pigs in the last year, according to the data released Tuesday by the country’s agricultural ministry. Part of the problem is that farmers aren’t refilling their pig farms after the sick animals die, according to China’s agricultural ministry. That has pressured Chinese authorities to explore ways to encourage farmers and producers to breed more baby pigs. The finance and agricultural ministries on Wednesday asked local governments to free up money that could be used for artificial insemination (人工授精) technology.

The ministries also called on local officials to accelerate the distribution of subsidies (补贴) to farms where pigs have been killed because of sickness. And the Beijing government plans to increase loan support and insurance coverage for pig producers nationwide.

1.What is the possible consequence of the reduction in China’s pig population?

A.A lack of diversity of meat.

B.Dramatic drop in the pork price.

C.Instability of the Chinese society.

D.The boom of global pork supply chain.

2.Which is a measure of the government to address the problem?

A.To release the emergency reserves of fresh meat.

B.To fund artificial insemination technology.

C.To offer free loan support to pig farmers.

D.To limit the pork price at the market.

3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?

A.China has lost a large majority of its pigs.

B.The swine problem is not that serious at present.

C.Farmers are unwilling to raise more pigs for fear of further loss.

D.The problem can surely be solved by future technological advance.

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Swine fever threatened the pork supply in the world.

B.China makes efforts to solve the swine problem.

C.China is home to half of all the pigs on the planet.

D.Chinese authorities encourage farmers to breed more baby pigs.

Maple syrup (枫糖浆) is a sweetener from maple tree sap (树汁). Many people use it in baking in place of sugar or other sweeteners, some use it in tea instead of honey and it is frequently used as a topping for pancakes, waffles, and other breakfast foods. Since true maple syrup is rather expensive, a wide range of false maple syrup exist.

This sweetener originated in the northeast region of North America, and it is in this region that most of the world’s maple syrup is still produced. Vermont, New Hampshire Maine, and the eastern portion of Canada are all known for their fine syrup, each with slightly different flavor qualities.

This sweetener is produced by tapping maple trees to release and collect their sap. A tree's sap is the liquid that, much like blood in animals, carries water and food to different parts of the tree to keep it nourished. A mature maple produces about ten gallons of sap in a given season, after which the tree will wall off the channel that has been tapped, so that a new tap has to be drilled the next season. Maples are not tapped for syrup until they are at least 40 years old and have reached a certain size, to ensure that no harm comes to the tree through the tapping process .

An immense amount of sap is required to produce maple syrup because the watery sap must be reduced to achieve the proper thickness and taste. Although the exact amount depends on the sweetness of the sap, in general it takes about 40 times as much maple sap to produce a portion of syrup. This may be further reduced to create thicker delicacies, such as maple butter, maple cream , and maple sugar.

In the Us, there are grade A and Grade B syrups, with three sub-divisions of Grade A: light amber, medium amber, and dark amber. Grade B is even darker than Grade A dark amber. Many people assume that the grading system is also indicative of quality, but in reality, it only helps to differentiate the color and taste of the syrup, which is a matter of personal preference. The tastes are different, but to say one is objectively “better” than another would be incorrect.

1.What do we know about the maple syrup from the first two paragraphs?

A.It can be a substitute of sugar and honey.

B.It varies greatly in flavor qualities.

C.It is produced in the northeast of the US.

D.It is too expensive to gain popularity.

2.The underlined word "nourished" in paragraph 3 can be replaced by “__________”.

A.warm. B.healthy.

C.complete. D.mature.

3.Why is a large amount of sap needed?

A.Because it is widely used in most delicacies.

B.Because it helps to protect old trees from harm.

C.Because it needs to be concentrated to make maple syrup.

D.Because the more sap is used, the better maple syrup tastes.

4.What's the main purpose of writing the text?

A.To teach people how to make maple syrup.

B.To attract more people to buy maple syrup.

C.To introduce basic knowledge of maple syrup.

D.To help people choose maple syrup of good quality.

My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago. It was a weekday evening, cold and wet and tense. People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts. At one point, two women quarreled for several minutes after colliding in the freezer section.

Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting intentionally and began to argue.

Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called a manager, who took him to customer service. Shaken , she moved to the next customer in line.

We’ve all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. My reaction when I see them is both personal and professional.  I am a data analyst and sociologist who studies how and why people interact with one another--or why they choose not to. To me, the grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has faded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith — starting with just one person.

Therefore, my wife and I reached the disturbed cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. We learned her name was Beth.

“We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you.” I said.

Beth’s face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left.

That is the balancing act, the moment of countering social and emotional pain with healing, that will add up to restore trust across the United States. You can start that pattern in someone else's life , even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store.

1.By describing the arguments, the author wants to show__________.

A.the job as a cashier is not easy. B.people in the U.S are unfriendly.

C.arguments in public are very common. D.confidence in each other has worn off.

2.How did Beth probably feel when the couple gave her a bottle of water?

A.Sad and regretful. B.Sorry and wronged.

C.Cheerful and rewarded. D.Grateful and relieved.

3.What's author's attitude towards Americans' regaining trust?

A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic.

C.Uncaring D.Cautious

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.A Miserable Cashier. B.A Helping Hand.

C.Learning to Trust Again. D.Starting a new life.

Christmas was hanging around. Six-year-old David was thinking what presents he could get from Santa. He wanted slippers; he wanted a silk tie; he wanted some toys. And school starting soon, he also hoped to get something about schooling. In order to get Santa to know what he needed, he thought he would write a letter to Santa, which he believed would bring him those presents. He found a sheet and made a list of the items on it, and then bent down to post the letter up the chimney, waiting for the winds to take it up.

David got up very early on the Christmas morning. He searched his room carefully, but to his disappointment, he didn't find the presents he hoped for. Hadn't Santa received the letter? Was he too busy to send him the gifts? Although feeling a little upset, David was convinced that Santa would not forget him and he was bound to receive the items.

Many years had passed and 2019 came. In an old house, a young builder, Lewis Shaw was removing the fireplace with his colleagues when he suddenly found a small piece of paper, which was still in perfect condition even if it had turned yellow. He picked it up and unfolded it. It was a letter written to Santa. The touching hand-written note read

Dear Father Christmas ,

Please can you send me a drum , box of chalks , slippers , silk tie , pencil box , any little toys you have to spare.

Love

David

It was then signed off with lots of kisses.

This was the very letter written by David and the house was where he had lived during his childhood! The letter struck Shaw so much. How simple Christmas once was! David didn't ask for much, just the things he just needed. Nowadays kids always wanted expensive gifts and took it for granted.

Investing in yourself

Figuring out how to invest your money can be a difficult task. This is something that you will want to learn how to do.

1.Things that will improve your knowledge, skills or health are all great investments. However, before you start, you need to be clear about what you will gain out of doing all of these things.

You may think investing in yourself means investing in your education.2.. There are some other things you can do as well as buying a gym membership or learning a new skill.

So what are some specific things you can do?3.. Reading books can really expand your mind and allow you to learn different skills and gain knowledge. I’m talking about the books where you will actually learn a new skill, not fiction books.

You can also take courses and attend seminars. These programs are taught by people with a high level of knowledge or skill.4.. Only in this way can you avoid being fooled by some sales presentation.

Moreover, investing in yourself is a safe way to keep your money. Although a savings account is seen as the most secure investment, that isn’t 100% safe. Even if you never experience your bank closing down, the return is little when inflation(通货膨胀) is taken into consideration.5.. But over time, they will show up in terms of your happiness level as well as your level of success.

A The benefits will stay with you.

B This is just one way.

C If you aren’t a reader, you should start with that.

D The more you do this, the more valuable you will be.

E The best way to invest your money is to invest it in yourself.

F Of course, you need to do some research before investing.

G When you invest in yourself, you may not see gains right away.

How does keeping things tidy change people psychologically? You gain greater confidence in yourself. Also, you become more optimistic and calmer in the mind than before. There are several reasons for these changes: your self-image improves as you start living in tidy beautiful rooms, and you gain decision-making skills as you continue to choose between which things to throw or give away and which to keep. The way we let go of things in the Kon Mari Method plays an important role as well.

The Kon Mari Method has a step where we give thanks to the things before we throw them away. Not only would you say “thank you for sparking joy in me" to a favorite piece of clothing that you wore till it was threadbare, you would also say to a piece of clothing you never wore once “thank you for teaching me that this color doesn't look good on me". You will appreciate the roles of all the things that have come to you and experience appreciation for all of them. Through this experience, you will rediscover the truth that you have been supported by so many things and you will deepen your gratitude for things you leave behind.

To share a personal example, I have always had little confidence in myself. When I get nervous before a large speaking assignment, I think to myself that I'll be fine because

these clothes are protecting me and these shoes are supporting me, and that calms me down. Once you start feeling constant gratitude for your things and your home through tidying up, you will start feeling relief and calm as if you are always protected by something larger than you.

1.What psychological change may tidiness bring to people?

A.They will become more confident. B.Their confidence will become less.

C.They will become less optimistic. D.Their self-image will be damaged.

2.What does the underlined word “threadbare" mean in the second paragraph?

A.fashionable B.fancy

C.out of date D.worn out

3.What should people show to clothes they have never worn in the Kon Mari Method?

A.Regret. B.Worry.

C.Gratitude. D.Patience.

4.Why does the author mention his own experience in the last paragraph?

A.To show off his wonderful speaking skills.

B.To give an example of the benefit of tidiness.

C.To explain how he has become a confident person.

D.To show his special taste in choosing suitable clothes.

Whether paired with a bottle of nice red wine or a burger, cheese can be a delicious treat. But it is not perhaps, the ideal material to use in printing — unless you are a team of nutritional scientists. One group of researchers used 3D printing to create a cheese. And the cheese could provide a valuable insight for engineers who are still developing materials for 3D printing.

A team from the school of food and nutritional sciences at University College Cork (UCC) conducted a series of tests evaluating the 3D-printed cheese. 3D printing materials need to be fluid (液态) enough to flow but also capable of setting into a definite shape or structure.

After melting the cheese at 75°C (167°F) for 12 minutes, the UCC team then ran it through a modified commercial 3D printer. The machine, which usually prints with plastic, was fitted with a syringe (注射器) to allow it to print with the melted cheese.

The UCC team used several techniques to examine the effects of the 3D printing process on their cheese. They compared the 3D-printed results to processed cheese that had been melted and then cooled, as well as another sample that was left untouched. Cheese that was 3D printed was 45% to 49% softer than the processed cheese, the researchers said. They also discovered that 3D-printed cheese was a little darker in colour and more fluid when melted, though it melted at about the same temperature as processed cheese.

Dr Kelly and his colleagues are now testing other types of dairy products which can be 3D-printed. Dr Kelly said, “We are using mixtures of milk proteins at present to build a product, perhaps a high-protein snack, and designing recipes which might work best for a 3D printer. ”

1.What problems are the engineers facing in 3D printing a cheese?

A.They don't have proper material.

B.They can't find a bottle of nice red wine or a burger.

C.They can't make the cheese very delicious.

D.They know much less than nutritional scientists.

2.How did the researchers use the 3D printer to make cheese?

A.They raised the temperature to 75°C.

B.They added a syringe to the printer.

C.They bought some cheese to paint it.

D.They evaluated the 3D-printed cheese.

3.What is the advantage of the 3D-printed cheese?

A.It melts more easily. B.It tastes more delicious.

C.It costs less money. D.It is much softer.

4.What will Dr Kelly and his colleagues do next according to the last paragraph?

A.Publish a report on their research.

B.Invent a new 3D printer.

C.3D print more milk food.

D.Make more cheese with their machine.

When we walked into the cafe, we were greeted by a waitress who smiled, held out a menu, and pointed to a table. It's only when we asked for a table for six that we realized something was a bit different. The waitress glanced at our group and held up six fingers. That's because all the staff are deaf.

Last month, the Huffington Post visited Smiles Cafe in Granada. The business only employs people who are deaf, from the waiters to the cooks. “My goal is for this cafe to be a mirror for other businesses to lose their fear of hiring people with disabilities," the founder Antonio Bunuel, who is from Spain, told HufPost. “It's also for the people who work here to lose their own fear of getting into the work force," he added, “So they can fly.”

In the city, about 1 person in 15 has a disability. But around 99 percent of people with a disability are unemployed. While the law requires companies to employ two people with disabilities for every 50 employees, many businesses don't. “Smiles Cafe was born out of a provocation. 99 percent of people with disabilities here are jobless. That was wrong!" Bunuel said. “So I decided to open a cafe where all of the employees were deaf to show that it works.

At the cafe, customers order by pointing to items on the menu, which have special symbols to indicate substitutions.
