Record fires sweeping across the Amazon this month have been catching the world's attention, because scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will make the climate worse and threaten biodiversity. As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is often called "the lungs of the world". It is also home to about 3 million plants and animals, and 1 million native people. Rainforests play an important role in the world's ecosystem because they can take in heat. They can also store carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, making that less carbon is given off, mitigating the effects of climate change. "Any forest destroyed is a threat to biodiversity and the people who use that biodiversity," said Thomas Lovejoy. "The most serious threat is that a lot of carbon goes into the air," he added. "In the center of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected," Antonio said. Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August this year from a year ago. "The forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon have dropped between 20 and 30 percent compared to the last 12 months," Carlos Nobre said.

At the age of 16, Einstein always played with a group of naughty kids. Because he was so busy playing, he didn't study enough and failed his final exam. One morning, when Einstein was about to go fishing with his friends, his father stopped him and said calmly. "Einstein you're so fond of playing all day that you failed your exam. I'm worried about your future." "What are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but don't they still get to go fishing?" "My boy, you can't think like that," his dad said. "There is a fable that people tell in our hometown. Listen to it now." "There were two cats playing on a roof. One cat fell down the chimney while holding the other cat. When the two cats climbed out of the chimney. One of the cats had soot on his face, while the other cat's face was clean. Seeing the soot-faced cat, the clean cat thought its face must be dirty, so it quickly ran to the riverside and washed its face. The soot-faced cat saw the clean-faced cat and thought its face was also clean. So it just swaggered down the street." "Einstein, no one can be your mirror. Only you are your own mirror. Taking other people to be your mirror, even genius may become a fool." Hearing this, Einstein laid down his fishing rod and returned to his room. He decided to pay more attention to his studies and less attention to what his friends were doing. This allowed him to be successful.

By the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth's population will live in cities. With the increase of human population, an estimated 109 hectares(公顷) of new land will be needed to grow enough food to feed them. If traditional farming practices continue as they are practiced today, there won't be enough land. Even if there were, traditional farming can also be harmful to land. Overused soil loses nutrients(营养). Farmers use chemicals to treat their crops. These chemicals get into the ground and run off into bodies of water. The polluted water supply does harm to the ecosystem(生态环境) and the health of those living things nearby. Vertical(垂直的) farming systems can really help solve these problems. First, farms in urban areas will allow people to harvest fresh produce yearround. There is no need to worry about harm such as droughts or insects, which could destroy a crop. And indoor farms do less harm to the environment. They use less water than a traditional farm and 97 percent of fresh water is reused. Second, vertical farms use less energy because they don't depend on large farming equipment and long transportation systems to carry the food from farms to cities. And all of the crops in an indoor farm are grown without pesticides(农药), so they are fresh and healthy. So, the next time you hear the word farm, don't just think of that large, open land with crops and animals. Think inside the city—it's the future of farming. 1题完成句子;2~3题简略回答问题;4题找出并写下第二段的主题句;5题将文中画线句子译成汉语。 1.If ____________ continue as they are practiced today, there won't be enough land. 2.What does the polluted water supply do harm to? ________________________________________________________________________ 3.Why do vertical farms use less energy? ________________________________________________________________________ 4.________________________________________________________________________ 5.________________________________________________________________________
