Teaching the true meaning of the holidays While parents are focusing on this all year round, the holidays are a major built-in opportunity for parents to help children develop character and values. Receiving gifts has no long-term effect on a child’s development, but contributing to others and learning about giving and selflessness does. 1. Show historical significance It’s important to help children understand the history of the holidays their own family celebrate. Read fiction or non-fiction books about the holidays and visit places where holidays are celebrated in different days. 2. Encourage thoughtful planning When preparing for the holidays, involve your child in the act of cooking or buying gifts. 3. Work together to choose special gifts for family members and ask your child to think about what would make each person happy. These skills encourage children to be thoughtful. These skills are best developed through experience rather than being told to be polite or thoughtful. Get crafts with giving Find ways for your child to give back to teach the true meaning of holiday giving. Suggest that each child get a toy by donating toys to those in need. 4. Consider participating in a service project or obtaining a “Crafts with Kindness” kit from the Bright Horizons Foundation for children that includes craft activities, and do-it-yourself cards. Set an example 5. Set an example by allowing your child to see you perform acts of kindness, join in spiritual service or give back to local organizations. A.Share and create traditions. B.They are giving and getting all at the same time. C.So it is time to teach children the true meaning of the holidays. D.Classics can inspire your child to think about the true meaning of the holidays. E.Ask your child to make a list of people who devote their lives to helping others. F.Help them make connections between the values of the holidays and their actions. G.Parents are the role models who can teach children the true meaning of the holidays.

Can you believe everything that you read? It seems as if every day, some new articles come out about a new discovery about this or that. For example, water is bad for you, or good for you. The answer depends on which scientific study has just come out. People cannot decide which food items are healthy, how pyramids were constructed, and why dinosaurs disappeared. When we look for answers we sometimes can believe persuasive researches and scientists. But how trustworthy are they really? Here are two examples of scientific hoaxes (骗局). As far back as 1726, Johann Beringer was fooled by his fellow scientists into thinking he had made an amazing discovery. The fossils of spiders, lizards, and even birds with the name of God written on them in Hebrew were unlike anything that had been found before. He wrote several papers on them and was famous for those only to have it revealed that they were planted by jealous colleagues to ruin his reputation. When an early human being was discovered in 1912, scientists at this time were wild with excitement over the meaning it had for the theory of evolution. There were hundreds of papers about this Piltdown man over the next fifty years until it was finally discovered to be a complex hoax. The skull (头骨) of a man had been mixed with the jawbone of an orangutan (猩猩) to make the ape (猿) man. The next time you read the exciting new findings of a study of the best scientist, do not automatically assume that it is true. Even qualified people can get it wrong. Though we certainly should not ignore scientific research, we do need to take it with a grain of salt. Just because it is accepted as the truth today does not mean it will still be trustworthy tomorrow. 1.What is the reason why Johann Beringer was fooled? A.His fellow scientists wanted to make fun of him. B.His workmates are eager to become famous too. C.These scientists made a mistake because of carelessness. D.His colleagues was jealous of him and did so to destroy his fame. 2.The excited scientists thought that this Piltdown man ________. A.was in fact a complex hoax B.was a great scientific invention C.contributed to the theory of evolution D.had the skull like that of an ape 3.What does the underlined phrase “with a grain of salt” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Happily. B.Generally. C.Doubtfully. D.Completely. 4.What can we learn from the passage? A.Hebrew is probably a kind of language. B.Truths of science will never be out of time. C.People believe scientists because they are persuasive. D.We are advised to believe famous scientists.

We once had a poster competition in our fifth-grade art class. “You could win prizes,” our teacher told us as she wrote the poster information on the blackboard. She passed out sheets of construction paper while continuing, “The first prize is ten dollars. You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard appear somewhere on your poster.” We studied the board critically. Some of us looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the right or left while we conjured up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We had plans for that ten-dollar grand prize, each and every one of us. I’m going to spend mine on candies, one hopeful would announce, while another practiced looking serious, wise and rich. Everyone in the class made a poster. Some of us used parts of those fancy paper napkins, while others used nothing but colored construction paper. Some of us used big designs, and some of us preferred to gather our art tidily down in one corner of our poster and let the space draw the viewer’s attention to it. Some of us would wander past the good students’ desks and then return to our own projects with a growing sense of hopelessness. It was yet another grown-up trick of the sort they seemed especially fond of, making all of us believe we had a fair chance, and then always—always—rewarding the same old winners. I believe I drew a sailboat, but I can’t say that with any certainty. I made it. I admired it. I determined it to be the very best of all of the posters I had seen, and then I turned it in. Minutes passed. No one came along to give me the grand prize, and then someone distracted me, and I probably never would have thought about that poster again. I was still sitting at my desk, thinking, what poster? When the teacher gave me an envelope with a ten-dollar bill in it and everyone in the class applauded for me. 1.What was the teacher’s requirement for the poster? A.It must appear in time. B.It must be done in class. C.It must be done on a construction sheet. D.It must include the words on the blackboard. 2.The underlined phrase in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________. A.formed an idea for B.made an outline for C.made some space for D.chose some colors for 3.We can infer from the passage that the author ________. A.enjoyed grown up tricks very much B.loved poster competitions very much C.felt surprised to win the competition D.became wise and rich after the competition

MEMORANDUM (备忘录) To: All members of the sales department From: Annette Derringer Re: Year-end party Date: November 26 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is just a quick note to let you all know the arrangements for next month’s year-end party. As you know, the party will be held at the Green Vale Country Club, which we have reserved between 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on the evening of December 21st. I’ve received replies from almost all of you confirming attendance, but if you haven’t let me know yet, please do so in the next day or two. Tickets for all employees have been covered by the company. The Green Vale manager has asked me to explain one or two things to those of you who have not been there before. Basically, there is sufficient parking space for only 100 vehicles, so they would like to ask those of you planning to drive, try to car-pool as much as possible. Also, the number of lockers available is small, so guests should try to keep belongings to a minimum. Thanks in advance. Annette

If it is not a problem, then can you let me know how much I should pay for their tickets? Also, assuming this is OK, I was planning to drive down in a single car, to reduce the need for parking and also to allow us to keep our belongings in the car. I have a couple of days off before the party, but I’ll be in my office until the 17th, so could you get back to me before then? Thanks a lot, Kyle
