Chloe Kim was one of America's top Olympians during last year's Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The snowboarding champion, who grew up in California, competed there at 17 years of age. She became the youngest woman ever to win an Olympic gold medal in the halfpipe competition.

She has recently won a halfpipe competition during the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado. But the 18-year-old snowboarder has decided to trade some trips down the halfpipe for an Ivy League education after an upcoming world championship competition in Utah. Beginning from next fall, Kim will be joining Princeton University's class. Instead of centering on the physics of her winning snow board moves, she could now be learning the subject in school. In a recent interview, Kim said, “While I have a special identity and my life has always been so different, I still aim to make my higher education experience as normal as possible.” Kim added, “I'd love to be Chloe, the girl who sits next to me in English class.”

Kim received widespread attention during the Pyeongchang Games. The publicity was fueled by her friendly, energetic nature as well as her interesting family story. Along her path to Olympic gold, Kim also became a social media star. She helped design a snowboarding Barbie doll in her likeness, rapped with hip-hop artist G-Eazy and joined other sports stars to be honored with ESPY Awards. While all of this was fun, Kim says she now looks forward to a new challengeearning a degree from one of America's top universities. She says she considers her acceptance to Princeton just as much of an honor as earning an Olympic gold medal.

She is still deciding what her exact field of study will be at Princeton. But she says it will involve something science-related, possibly chemistry or biology. She is attempting to work out a plan that will permit her to keep training while going to classes. Kim says her sports and educational goals go hand-in-hand. “It's all about progressing the sport and also pushing myself,” she said. “To see what can do, and how far I can go.”

When my three boys were young, our summer vacation consisted of driving the nine hours to my parents' place in Maine, where I grew up. While we loved those visits, the truth is we couldn't afford to go anywhere else. My husband, David, and I had finally saved up enough to buy our first home. We'd even made an agreement: We wouldn't spend more than $ 100 without consulting each other.

On one of those holidays, I took the boys to the local library, where a silent auction was underway. I was attracted by one item: Shot nearby, on the rocky coast, the photo was naturalistic, capturing the characteristic of the young subjects and the beauty of my home state. Up for bid: a session with the photographer.

In a hurry, I wrote down my name on the sign-up sheet, half sure that my offer of $ 500 would be topped. It wasn't. And though I felt bad about breaking my agreement with David, I was happy with my bid won.

The morning of the shoot, we put the kids into the car and drove to a favorite beach. The photographer, already standing in the parking lot with a camera around her neck, started snapping pictures the minute they got out of their car seats. She gently tried to persuade the boys forward, leading them to gather around a rock pool.

When the contact sheet arrived, I knew it had been worth the money. In the photos each boy's personality shone clearly.

More than a dozen years later, the portrait is a touchstone for me, a key to understanding who my children are. The photograph is a piece of art and a piece of our family history, worth every penny.

How to conduct a group discussion

In life, there are times when you’ll be working in a group. If you’re reading this, then probably you’re a group leader and you’ll conduct (主持) a group discussion. Don’t worry.1. Here are the steps in conducting a group discussion.

● At the start of the discussion, present the problem to the group. You must think of the problem before the discussion.2. The problem can be something that prevents a group achieving its goal, or something that asks “how”. Once you have recognized the problem, discuss it with the group and find out solutions to it.

● Once the group understands the problem, it’s time to ask for ideas. As a leader, you should give everyone in the group a chance to share his/her idea.3. Some ideas may be out of this world but it can help the group to make a decision.

● When someone in the group finishes sharing an idea, write it down on a white board.4. It’s not only important for remembering that idea, but it also shows that you value his/her opinion.

5.In this important stage, you must ask the group to vote for a particular idea and go with it. The idea with the most votes shall be the solution to the problem. But if you feel that it isn’t the solution, think about it carefully and discuss it with the group.

A.Pick out the best idea.

B.Conclude the discussion.

C.Always keep in mind that the majority isn’t always right.

D.You should listen carefully to their words no matter what they say.

E.Handling a group discussion is easy if you know what to do.

F.However,if you didn’t think about it,you can consult the group.

G.Do this for everyone in the group until they all share their ideas

I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way.

Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting annoyed, but then it hit me: I started noticing his answers were much quicker and right when he stood up. Could he be focused while standing up?

This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet child was more likely to succeed. This child would have the discipline to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life. Kids that were active and loud would only be objects of stares.

Now people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality features, and all they can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.

I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating, just in his own way and not mine. We need to accept our kids, and their ways of doing things. This way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than seeing our children being individual(个人). It makes us happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live life.

Children really need to know some basic first aid skills. This is true whether your child is four or fourteen. So what should you teach your children?

Calling for help

Once your child reaches the age of four, he should know all about calling 911 in the event of an emergency. Explain all about what a real emergency is. For example, he should call 911 if an adult asks him to, if an adult passes out and cannot be woken, if there is a fire and he can’t find an adult, or if people are hurt.

As I am typing this, I just realized that although my kids are taught about 911, the telephones in the house are out of reach for all but my oldest child (to prevent the other two from playing with the phone). Don’t make this mistake yourself, or your children wouldn’t get in touch with the police in time.

Cuts and scrapes (擦伤)

Teach children about basic care for cuts and scrapes. In my house, the kids all know that cuts must be cleaned and know where the bandages are. They also know how to put pressure on a cut to make it stop bleeding. Of course they should ask an adult for help, but they should also know a bit about self care. Believe it or not, I had to help a teenage neighbor once who had no idea what to do when he cut his hand on broken glass. He just ran around in a circle.

Burns

Tell your child that if he ever gets a burn, he should immediately call for help and then run the cool but not cold water for the burn. Getting a burn cooled down quickly can reduce the damage to the skin. This is important if no adult is with your child when a burn occurs.

1.What should children be taught at 4 according to the author?

A.To call out parents’names. B.To get help from the police.

C.To know what a real emergency is. D.To remember some phone numbers.

2.What does the underlined part“this mistake”refer to?

A.Letting kids play with the phone. B.Stopping kids from using the phone.

C.Not telling kids to call 911. D.Keeping the phone out of kids’reach.

3.What does the example of the author’s teenage neighbor mainly tell us?

A.Getting help is very important. B.Even teenagers can cut their hands.

C.Not all teenagers are good at self care. D.We should be prepared to help others.

4.What should we do if we get a burn?

A.Look for the bandages. B.Put some ice on the burn.

C.Cool the burn under water. D.Wait for rescuers patiently.

5.What’s the text mainly for?

A.Kids. B.Parents. C.Teachers. D.Students
