One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school? Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time! Make plans — Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old! 1.While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should _____. A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well 2.When we provide help for our friends, we should _____. A. try to do everything for them B. put them before ourselves C. change their bad habits first D. ignore their faults 3.What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words? A. Life without a friend is death. B. A friend is easier lost than found. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A man is known by his friends.

I climbed Kilimanjaro with Lava Expeditions (探险队) during the rainy season. I flew to Nairobi in Kenya and spent several days there. At my hotel in Nairobi I met the rest of the group with whom I would spend the next week. We all travelled on the bus together for a 6-hour journey into Tanzania and then Arusha, a quiet town. After we arrived at our hotel in Arusha, we had dinner and a few drinks. Then we were introduced to more members including Taddeus Minja, the main guide, who was very experienced — climbing Kilimanjaro runs through the generations (代) of his family. The next day the Lava Expeditions members checked if we had the correct and enough clothing for our expedition on Kilimanjaro. Only one person needed to bring more clothes. After that we set off, walking in the rain through the beauty of the rainforest, all the way to the first camp. I was happy the next few days as the view was so wonderful and changed every day. I suffered a little during the trip and I felt so tired. But the members of Lava Expeditions provided me with lots of encouragement, which was one of the best memories. Finally we reached the top of Kilimanjaro in bright blue skies. I felt excited about climbing Kilimanjaro and the feeling didn’t change during my trip. Lava Expeditions looked after me so well that I was deeply thankful for their help. 1. What do we know about Taddeus Minja according to the passage? A. He organized the journey. B. He was the leader of Lava Expeditions. C. He was the manager of a hotel in Arusha. D. He had much knowledge about climbing mountains. 2.How did Lava Expeditions help the author while climbing Kilimanjaro? A. By carrying bags for him. B. By offering food to him. C. By encouraging him. D. By teaching him climbing skills. 3.What did the author think of his climbing Kilimanjaro? A. Tiring and disappointing. B. Tiring but happy. C. Dangerous but exciting. D. Dangerous and tiring. 4.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To tell readers about Lava Expeditions. B. To give readers advice on climbing Kilimanjaro. C. To encourage more people to climb Kilimanjaro. D. To share his experience of climbing Kilimanjaro.

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes. He listened to me quietly, then he asked.“Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.” I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself. I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That's just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice. 1.What did the father do after he had heard his daughter's complaint? A.He told her not to pay any attention to what her“enemy”had said. B.He criticized (批评) her and told her to overcome her shortcomings. C.He told her to write down all that her“enemy”had said about her and pay attention only to the things that were true. D.He refused to take the list and have a look at it. 2.What does “Week by week her list grew” mean? A.Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me. B.She had made a list of my shortcomings and she kept on adding new ones to it so that it was growing longer and longer. C.I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on. D.Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious. 3.Why did her father listen to her quietly? A.Because he believed that what her daughter's“enemy”said was mostly true. B.Because he had been so angry with his daughter's shortcomings that he wanted to show this by keeping silent for a while. C.Because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment. D.Because he wasn't quite sure which girl was telling the truth. 4.Which do you think would be the best title for this passage? A.Not an Enemy, but the Best Friend B.The Best Advice I've Ever Had C.My Father D.My Childhood

Grownups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development. 1.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1? A.People remember well what they learned in childhood. B.Children have a better memory than grownups. C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words. D.Stories for children arc easy to remember. 2.The author explains the law of overlearning by______. A.presenting research findings B.selling down general rules C.making a comparison D.using examples 3.What does the word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.Commonly accepted rules. B.The multiplication tables. C.Things easily forgotten. D.School subjects. 4.What is the author's opinion on cramming? A.It leads to failure in college exams. B.It's helpful only in a limited way. C.It's possible to result in poor memory. D.It increases students' learning interest.
