Hope

Nothing in my life had prepared me for what I had to do. Choosing my words carefully, and fighting to stay calm, I told my 4-year-old daughter that her grandmother had suffered a stroke(中风),that she was unconscious, and that the doctors said she would probably never wake up. As she moved closer to me, Amelia looked at me, eyes bright, and said, “Maybe Grandma will be okay.” “Maybe she will,” I said, keeping back the tears, But I knew better. I was flying up to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from our Florida home in the morning to say good-bye to my mom.

The rest of that awful week, I joined my brother and father sitting by my mother’s side in the hospital room. I held her hand and talked to her. I told her that we still needed her. I told her that it wasn’t time to leave yet. I told her how much I loved her. And I told her that her little granddaughter, Amelia, believed that she’d get better. The doctors, with all their years of training and experience, offered no hope for recovery. The damage was simply too extensive.

Then, a couple of weeks later, an odd thing happened. Mom woke up. She regained consciousness. Persevered through a long and tough recovery, during which she had to learn to walk, read, and write all over again, and eventually returned home to Dad. The only one who wasn’t shocked was Amerlia. The doctors couldn’t explain it. Amelia didn’t need to. Hope came as naturally to her as breathings.

So why are we so afraid to hope sometimes? Maybe it’s because over the year, life’s disappointments can turn us to disillusionment(理想破灭). How many times have you heard someone say: “Hope for the best, expect the worst”? That’s not really hope at all.

Hope is being able to look at our world with all of the joy and wonder of a child.

I used to think ants knew what they were doing. The ones marching across my kitchen counter looked so confident; I just figured they had a plan, knew where they were going and what needed to be done. How else could ants organize highways, build elaborate nests, launch impressive attacks, and do all the other things ants do?

Turns out I was wrong. Ants aren’t clever little engineers, architects, or soldiers after all --- at least not as individuals. When it comes to deciding what to do next, most ants don’t have a clue. “If you watch an ant try to accomplish something, you’ll be impressed by how awkward it is,” says Deborah M. Gordon, a biologist at Stanford University.

“Ants aren’t smart,” Gordon says. “Ant colonies are.” A colony can solve problems unthinkable for individual ants, such as finding the shortest path to the best food source, assigning workers to different tasks, or defending a territory from neighbors. As individuals, ants might be tiny dummies, but as colonies they respond quickly and effectively to their environment. They do it with something called collective intelligence.

Where this intelligence comes from raises an essential question in nature: How do the simple actions of individual ants add up to the complex behavior of a group? How do hundreds of honey-bees make a critical decision about their hive (蜂巢)if many of them disagree? The collective abilities of such animals --- one of which grasps the big picture, but each of which contributes to the group’s success --- seem miraculous even to the biologists who know them best. Yet during the past few decades, researchers have come up with fascinating insights.

1.The author’s former false impression about ants is that he thought them to be _______.

A. smart    B. awkward    C. elaborate    D. creative

2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Ants will function as a single body once a decision is made by the commander.

B. Ants are the only species which developed collective intelligence.

C. The ant queen plays a role in managing ant workers besides laying eggs.

D. An individual ant can’t comprehend the whole process of a big movement.

3.The paragraph following the passage will most probably deal with _______.

A. where we can observe such fantastic behavior of ants

B. which is the leading ant in charge of the action

C. how the collective intelligence works

D. what inspiration can be drawn from the collective abilities

Just as the stock market rises and falls in response to what people are willing to put their money behind, we have inside ourselves an inner economy that rises and falls in response to our beliefs about what is possible. Sometimes the degree to which we are willing to _____our belief systems determines the success of our inner economy. For example, imagine that your family of origin had a belief that musical talent was not something they _____ As a member of that group, you would likely _____ that same belief about yourself. As a result, even if you had a great desire to create music, you might be _____ to really get behind yourself. Because you might fear that your _____ would not pay off. Even if you had the courage to follow your passion, your inner belief that you are not born_____ would probably stop your trying. And that would be a major _____ to invest your energy in your dream.

On the other hand, belief isn’t anything ____ If you found a way to _____ that negative belief, a great flood of energy would pour forth, greatly increasing the possibility of your success. How much energy we are willing to invest in the various ideas and dreams is like the money people are, or are not, willing to invest in the various products available for trade on the stock market. And in both cases, ______ plays a key role in determining how willing we are to get behind something. One way to open up the possibility for greater success in our inner economies is to understand that belief is not the reliable _______we sometimes think. There are other more reliable things of success that we can put our faith in, such as passion, feeling, and sense. Some of the most successful investors in the stock market are the ones that go against the grain, trusting their sense over the ______opinion held by ordinary people about what will work.

In the same way, we can learn to trust our heart’s desires and our sense to guide us,

questioning any beliefs that stand in the way of our ability to fully invest in ourselves. As we take out energy from limiting ideas about what is possible, we ______ the resources that have the power to make our inner economy prosper.

My favorite thing about the dress is that it has such many pockets that I don’t need take a bag any more. I also get lots of attentions from my friends whenever I wear it, that makes me proud.     If you’re thinking about studying abroad, but aren’t sure how to convince your parents or yourself, here are some of the best reasons why spending a semester or year overseas is a smart and fun thing to do.

1. Want to impress potential employers? Companies around the world continue to invest in the global market, and prefer to hire employees who have international experience. Not to mention the knowledge of a second language. Your resume (简历) will stand out from everyone else applying for the same position.

Learn foreign languages. Language teachers say being immersed (沉浸) in a culture that speaks the language you want to learn is the quickest and most effective way to learn it. 2. As globalization brings the world together, it’s important to be competent in more than one language.

Experience different cultures. Immersing yourself in a totally different culture is powerful. You’ll experience things like trying different foods, celebrating traditional customs, and learning the history of another country. A person’s culture reflects beliefs and values that influence their way of life. 3.

Expand your worldview. Previously held beliefs about foreign countries will change once you’ve been abroad. 4. It can be surprising just how much you know is slightly biased (有偏见的), based on where you’re from. It’s also a unique opportunity to educate others on your country

Earn money! 5. We are pretty lucky that English is the international language of business. It’s an important language that many foreigners want to learn. You can get paid for teaching, interpreting, or translating English while you’re studying abroad.

A. Discover what you want out of life.

B. Improve employment opportunities.

C. You can actually earn income while you study abroad.

D. You’ll gain a completely new view on your own country, too.

E. You’ll gain an understanding of this that can’t be taught with books.

F. Mastering a foreign language opens up all kinds of new opportunities.

G. You’ll miss your friends who will want to share their culture and ideas with you.

It used to be mostly the army that used small, unpiloted aircraft, called “drones”. The little planes were very costly. But as they have dropped in price more people have begun to use them.

The fast rate of development of computer technology, image sensing equipment, satellite navigation and smart phones has led to lower-priced drones. Researchers and developers have learned how to build smaller and less costly drones. Nowadays, moviemakers are using drones to film from the sky. Historians use them when they explore ancient buildings. Rescue workers use them to look for people. And now farmers are also using them to watch over their crops.

Romain Faroux is a French businessman, whose father was a farmer. He believed drones could help farmers. He has helped create a company which has developed a small drone that could be controlled by people on the ground. It’s called “Agridrone”. It uses a special sensor to examine crops. The technology used on the drone is similar to that used on a smartphone -- except it has wings. A computer program directs the drone to fly over the crops. The sensor on the drone records four different-colored “bands” of sunlight that are reflected off the crops.

Jean-Baptiste Bruggeman is another farmer in France who is using a drone. He says the drone flies over his crops at different times of the season and provides a lot of information about his crops. The pictures taken by the drone show him the exact amount of fertilizer the crops need. It also shows exactly where the fertilizer is needed.

Romain Faroux says farmers use information provided by the Agridrone to place fertilizer only in areas where it is needed. This saves money and reduces pollution. Before they used the drones, farmers would put the same amount of fertilizer everywhere. Drones also save time because farmers can examine up to three hectares (英亩) in about a minute.

1.Why do rescue workers and farmers begin to use drones?

A.Because they are affordable now.

B.Because their sizes have become smaller.

C.Because they can save people a lot of time.

D.Because the technology has been developed.

2.What is the sensor on the drone mainly used for?

A.Helping the sunlight shine on the crops.

B.Directing the wings to fly over the crops.

C.Examining the different colors of the crops.

D.Recording the sunlight “bands” reflected off the crops.

3.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?

A.A smartphone. B.A sensor.

C.A drone. D.A band.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Crops will be harvested by drones soon.

B.Drones will be widely used in different fields.

C.French farmers use drones to examine their crops.

D.Farmers develop special drones for their crops.

Josh Katz works at the New York Times. His common job is to use information to tell interesting stories. In December 2013, Katz built a quiz on the Times website. It asked people about the words they used to describe things and events. It also asked how they pronounced common words. The quiz then used people’s answers to decide where in the United States they were from.

The quiz got more than 350, 000 results. Katz turned the results into a book. In Speaking American, he studies regional differences in how Americans talk.

“A lot of people’s language shows who they are and where they are from, in a very personal way”, Katz said.

Katz says people are often surprised to learn that the way they talk can show where they grew up. Most Americans don’t realize they use regionalisms --- or words and phrases specific to a particular part of the country. But just about everyone does. Almost every major U.S. city has a few unique terms. For example, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the night before Halloween is known as Mischief Night. Anyone who calls it that is likely to be connected to the city.

Katz himself was surprised by how many common words are regional. “There are a lot of words I use that I just thought were standard words,” he says. “Then I found out some of these words were actually a product of my upbringing.”

For example, he says, “I thought everyone said ‘sneakers’ (运动鞋) and not ‘tennis shoes’.”  But it turns out “sneakers” is connected mostly to the Northeast. That’s where Katz is from.

Some scholars think that language in the U.S. is growing more homogeneous (同类的). But Katz disagrees. “These regional differences are here to stay.” he says.

Not only are people still using common regionalisms, but there are new ones appearing all the time, according to Katz. There’s no way to predict how language will change in the future. But Katz sees more changes coming. “The only sure thing about language is that it’s going to keep moving.” he says.

1.What’ s the purpose of the quiz?

A.To test people on common knowledge.

B.To find out what words are mostly used.

C.To help people learn about their hometown better.

D.To see whether people’s language shows their backgrounds.

2.How do most Americans look at their using regionalisms?

A.They are proud of it.

B.They do it unintentionally.

C.They find it quite interesting.

D.They have no idea why everybody does it.

3.Why does Katz mention “ sneakers” in the 6th paragraph?

A.Because it’s different from “tennis shoes”.

B.Because it’s an example of a standard word.

C.Because his hometown is possibly the birthplace of it.

D.Because many common words come from a specific area.

4.What is Katz’s opinion on regional differences?

A.They will finally disappear in the future.

B.They have a bad influence on people’s life.

C.They will remain a part of people’s everyday life.

D.They prevent language from being homogeneous.

I was in Walt Disney World with my son, Daniel, who is autistic (患自闭症的), and at that time he was 7 years old. My wife and our three other sons were with us too. He was having one of his melt down screaming tantrums (发怒), only God knows why. So my wife and I decided I would take the bus back to the hotel, and she would stay in the park with the other three children.

After we got on the bus, the screaming continued. My son looks “normal”. To the many people on the bus, he appeared to just be a kid screaming --- or a spoiled child who did not get his special toy that day. It did not take long --- less than a minute --- before the screaming brought about stares, then glares from the other passengers.

To my shame, I found myself losing my temper at my own son. I was embarrassed, angry, and frustrated, and felt cheated by God for not being able to enjoy a normal vacation with my family because of him. I started to wonder what life would be like without having to deal with this cross (痛苦).

And just as the reactions of the other passengers were becoming most intense, a man seated just in front of me turned around to face me. I cheered myself up for his advice on how to raise a well-behaved child.

He said calmly, “Is he alright?” I said, “He’s autistic.” Then the man said , “It's alright.” And he smiled. That’s all.

And suddenly, all the anger building up inside me was gone. I almost wept for shame at how I had felt a moment before. It no longer mattered what the other people thought. My son was my gift from God.

I will never forget that man, nor his small, simple act of kindness and understanding. I truly believe he was my son’s guardian angel that day maybe mine too.

1.Why did Daniel become angry?

A.Because he didn't get his special toy.

B.No one knew the reason for his anger.

C.Because something went wrong with him.

D.Because he quarreled with his brother or sister.

2.Hearing Daniel’s screaming, _______.

A.the passengers were not satisfied

B.the passengers felt sorry for the author

C.the author comforted him with patience

D.the driver asked the author and his son to get off

3.What does the third paragraph tell us?

A.How the author helped his son calm down.

B.How the author reacted to his son's screaming.

C.What made the author angry and embarrassed.

D.What the author’s life would be like without Daniel.

4.How did the author’s anger disappear?

A.The bus arrived at the stop near his hotel.

B.A stranger helped him realize his mistake.

C.His son stopped screaming and apologized to him.

D.He suddenly realized his son was an autistic child.

I particularly enjoy the works of Greenwich Village poet Edward Field, whose interest in cinema led to a number of poems based on old monster movies (including many about Frankenstein and my favorite, Curse of the Cat Woman).

Litteacher 8 29 minutes ago

There are so many to choose from! I love Robert Frost, especially “Mending Wall”, mostly because he is my dad’s favorite poet. However, personally I love Lnagston Hughes’s poem “Dreams” because it always brings happiness to me. I am also a big fan of the older poems, such as Spenser’s “One Day I Wrote Her Name Upon the Strand” because it is so simple, and “The Tyger” and “The Lamb” by William Blake because I love the language.

Michael Ugulini 51 minutes ago

My favorite poet is Suji Kwock Kim. Ever since I read her book of poetry “Notes from the Divided Country”, I have been a big fan of her clear and thoughtful writing. My favorite poem of hers is “Borderlands”, which she wrote in memory of her grandmother. It is a poem about her grandmother’s experiences during the war.

Hard to decide! But if I have to, I’d say Emily Dickinson. Her life was so wonderful and her opinions about life are also interesting. Her understanding of nature speaks to the heart of anyone who loves the outdoors! Dickinson also understood human nature very well. Her poems speak of love, loneliness, ect. Finally, my favorite poem by her is “I Never Saw a Moor”. I love her thoughts!

Emily turned on the TV. It was 6 o’clock and the news were on Channel 3. Therefore, she didn’t want to see the news, which was usual about traffic accidents. There was too many bad news on TV. Emily found talk show to watch. It was hosting by Jack, who was good-looking and smart, and he told good joke. And sometimes he gave expensive gifts to his fans. Perhaps this show was sometimes bored, but that didn’t matter to him. That was because of all she wanted to do was relax.

They were once one of the most popular foods in China. Whether they were in our kitchen at home or in the luggage we traveled with, instant noodles weren’t too difficult to find. 1..

According to statistics from the World Instant Noodles Association in November, sales of instant noodles in China fell by nearly 10 billion packages from 2011 to 2016.

2.. This means that on average, every one of the 1.3 billion people in China consumed(消费)three packages of instant noodles a month that year.

The change could be due to the fact that instant noodles have failed to adapt to(适应)the changing taste of Chinese consumers, especially young people, who are the largest group of consumers of instant noodles.

3.. I have just got tired of them and no longer eat instant noodles,” a man who works for an Internet company said.

Another reason could be the online meal ordering industry, which has greatly enlarged young people’s choices beyond instant noodles.

Almost 90 percent of students at Yangzhou University in Jiangsu Province said they ordered online meals, often on a weekly basis. And according to a survey in 2016, about 70 percent of young people ordered online meals at least once a week.4..

The rise of online meal ordering services shows that people have a higher demand for life quality and put more importance on health and nutrition, according to Shen Hongbing, a professor from Chongqing Technology and Business University.

“Instant noodles won’t disappear, although the market share will reduce,” Shen told Chongging Morning Post. “5..”

A. In 2011. 48.38 billion were sold

B. One example of non-natural foods is instant noodles

C. They will still be one of the foods familiar to many Chinese

D. Instant noodles are eaten due to the low cost and convenience

E. It’s been 10 years, but the taste of instant noodles is still the same

F. However, they seem to have fallen out of favor with Chinese people now

G. Online meal ordering services are convenient, quick and there are different choices

Have you ever noticed how Americans fill up their entire glass with ice and then pour their drinks in but Europeans take their drinks at room temperature? In the U.S they’ve created fridges that give you cold ice at the press of a button but in Britain they typically serve their tap water warm.

This tradition — if that’s what you want to call it — dates back to the 19th century. During that time it was already common for most American homes to have an ice box. Ice would be harvested in northern America or Canada and shipped across the Atlantic and sold at a high price in British department stores. Can you imagine heading to Macy’s to treat yourself to a block of ice?

Putting ice in the drink started to become somewhat of a fashion trend for the wealthy in Britain. Some would put a few cubes in their champagne(香槟酒)and sip at their iced drinks at high-class parties But like any fashion trend it eventually faded mainly because the ice was just too expensive. And even once ice boxes began appearing in homes in Britain as well Brits never took a liking to ice in their drinks.

So next time you travel overseas don’t feel offended(冒犯)when your server gives you an eye roll when you ask for ice water.

1.What can we infer about Brits?

A.They treat their guests to cold drinks.

B.They always follow what Americans do.

C.They don’t know where to get ice.

D.They have ice boxes later than Americans

2.Why do Brits take their drinks at room temperature?

A.Because they have no fridges.

B.Because they have warm taps.

C.Because they are used to it.

D.Because they can’t afford ice.

3.What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Why Americans like icy drinks while Europeans don’t.

B.When people overseas have icy drinks with their meals.

C.Where people can entertain themselves with icy drinks.

D.How Europeans and Americans make different drinks.

He was born in Germany in 1818, and German was his native language. He stayed in Belgium for a few years; then he went to France. In 1849, he went to England and made London the base for his revolutionary(革命的)work.

The first time I saw him was in February 1865. I was twenty-four years old. Never in my life shall I forget the impression made on me by my first visit. Marx was in poor health then, but was hard at work on the first volume of Capital.

Marx could read all the leading European languages and write in three German, French and English. He was fond of saying, “A foreign language is a weapon in the struggle of life.”

At fifty he took up the study of Russian. Although the language had no close relation to any of the modern or ancient languages he knew, he made such progress in six months that he was able to enjoy reading Russian poetry and works.

Although he went to bed very late, he always got up between eight and nine in the morning. Having drunk a cup of black coffee and read through his newspapers, he would go to his study and work there till two or three next morning — breaking off only for meals, and when the weather allowed, for a walk on Hampstead Heath, London. In the course of the day he slept for an hour or two on the sofa. For Marx, work had become a passion, and he was so absorbed in it that he often forgot his meals. Frequently, he had to be called again and again before he came down to the dining room. But hardly had he eaten the last mouthful when he was back in his study again.

1.Where did the author probably see Marx for the first time?

A.In Germany. B.In Belgium.

C.In France. D.In England.

2.When was the author born?

A.In 1818. B.In 1841.

C.In 1849. D.In 1865.

3.How many languages could Marx not only read but also write?

A.One. B.Two.

C.Three. D.Four.

4.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Marx was addicted to his work. B.Marx often forgot his meals.

C.Marx was in poor health. D.Marx developed an interest in reading.

When her classmates were having a good time, Molly sat at the picnic table alone. She remained embarrassed around her classmates. She seemed unsure of what to do or say, yet I could see her eyes longing for acceptance. Many students had already decided that her friendship would not be worth(值)the energy required to overcome the embarrassment. Others laughed at her. Most ignored her—except for one.

Brianna was making the other students laugh, as usual. “Brianna, do you see Molly down there? Would you mind walking down there and inviting her to come up here with the rest of us? I said.

Brianna sighed. I could tell she didn’t want to waste her precious time to do what I was asking of her, but I also knew her heart. She often thought of others before herself—a rare character for anyone, much less a kid.

Knowing this choice was hard for her, I pulled out a D-buck, our class currency(货币). Though this was not the ideal way to deal with this situation. I needed her cooperation(合作). “Here, I’ll pay you for your time.” I said to her. She offered an insincere smile, grasped the green paper, and headed down the hill.

As the rest of the children screamed and laughed, my eyes locked on Brianna as she neared the picnic table. Molly could be difficult to get along with, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if she sent Brianna back alone, refusing her invitation. When she encouraged herself to a standing position, I sighed with relief.

Minutes later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Here. Mrs. D.” Brianna handed me the D-buck. “Why?” I asked. “I shouldn’t keep this.” Her eyes fell to her feet, guilt showing from her quiet voice. “I don’t want Molly to think I only went to get her so I could earn the money. She’s my friend.”

A moment later, they were all laughing again, and who should I see among them, laughing for the first time that week? Molly.

1.According to the author, what was Molly like?

A.She ignored the jokes from other kids.

B.She felt embarrassed at being laughed at.

C.She desired to be accepted by other kids.

D.She had no interest in making friends.

2.What made Brianna different from other kids?

A.Her talent. B.Her cooperation.

C.Her honesty. D.Her kindness

3.How did the author feel as Brianna walked to Molly?

A.Worried. B.Satisfied.

C.Excited. D.Confused.

4.What was the purpose of Brianna’s returning the D-buck to the author?

A.To avoid losing it one day.

B.To get a pure friendship with Molly.

C.To make friends with her teacher.

D.To escape from being punished by her teacher.

A single cigarette sold on a street corner may not cost a lot; however, the whole costs of smoking are huge.

First, consider the cost of human life. The World Health Organization says about 10 people die of a tobacco-related disease every minute. That speed adds up to almost six million people dying of such diseases every year.

Most of these preventable(可预防的)deaths happen in low-income and middle-income countries. The World Bank says each of these countries has a total national income(收入)of less than $12,746.

The World Health Organization says tobacco kills 6 million people yearly — a number that is expected to rise to 8 million by 2030 unless immediate action is taken.

For most people, stopping smoking is hard. Many began smoking as teenagers. They are used to it. Also, tobacco contains the powerful drug nicotine.

Studies show people who want to stop smoking can do so with different treatments. Some get help from electronic cigarettes, medicine or nicotine patches that reduce their desire for the drug.

But smoking costs more than the life of a person. It can affect the health of the whole country. The World Health Organization says low-income countries depend heavily on taxes from cigarettes. They use the money, in part, to pay the costs of health care for tobacco-related diseases.

But the illegal trade in tobacco products is further testing the economies of low-income countries. WHO officials say the illegal trade earns about $31 billion every year.

Douglas Bettcher is the director of the WHO’s Department for the Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases. He calls the illegal trade a monster with many heads. He says the trade enables young people to buy cigarettes at low prices, become addicted to tobacco and suffer from serious health problems. It also increases crime and reduces taxes.

The World Health Organization is strongly suggesting that the United Nations member states sign an agreement to end the illegal trade in tobacco products. Eight countries have agreed to the agreement. But the agreement of 32 other countries is still needed for it to become an international law.

1.According to the passage, people dying of a tobacco-related disease are mostly from ______.

A.developed countries B.high-income countries

C.less developed countries D.the United Nations

2.Which of the following about the whole costs of smoking is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.Destroying the environment. B.Being bad to human life.

C.Affecting the whole country’s economy. D.Causing the illegal trade.

3.What’s the main idea of the last but one paragraph?

A.Some action has been taken by the WHO.

B.The harm of the illegal trade in tobacco products.

C.Young people who are addicted to smoking may commit a crime.

D.An agreement to end the illegal trade in tobacco products is being signed.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A.Smoking Costs More than You Think

B.Different Ways to Stop Smoking

C.The Illegal Trade in Tobacco Products

D.Immediate Action to Stop Smoking

Dear Laura,

Thanks for letting us to stay at your seaside house. Now, you might have heard from your neighbors about which happened on Saturday evening. When I was out a walk, my younger son, Tom, played football before your house. He made so many noise that the neighbors got quite angrily. Even worse, Tom broke one of the window of Mr. Wilson’s house. Tom and I apologized to all the neighbors for the unhappy happenings, but promised to have the broken window repair soon. Tom said that we would not do such silly things any more. I am glad that your neighbors had forgiven us. They are really nice people.

Yours,

Betty

Most people will agree that it is good to read, but not all reading is equal. Here are some tips for productive reading.

1. Take notes.

Even if you never refer to your notes again, the process of taking notes helps you sort out something important and will help you remember it. You can choose between computers or paper for your notes. 1.. On the other hand, many people feel they recall information better when they write it by hand.

2. 2..

If you are like me, once you commit to reading a book, it is very hard to give up until you’ve finished it. Given the number of books that are available and our limited life, it just doesn’t make sense to read a book that you aren’t getting anything from.

3. Variety is good.

While you don’t want to give up on a book that you are benefiting from, it is important to give yourself variety. You can pick up a book at random or intentionally looking for something different from what you normally read. 3..

4. Review what you’ve read.

If you want to remember what you read, take the time to review. 4.. When you finish a book, spend 15 minutes examining your notes in 2 to 4 days. Then 2 to 4 weeks after that and then 2 to 4 months after that. This will strengthen the knowledge in your mind.

5. Discuss what you read with others.

5.. If you can talk with people in person, that is ideal, but don t overlook the power of the Internet in connecting people with similar interests but different geography.

A. Don’t be afraid to give up

B. Make full use of reading time

C. It’s hard to get more out of your normal reading

D. This can be very valuable in giving you a different opinion

E. And youd better go over things at ever increasing time intervals

F. Using computers will make it easy to find your notes later by search

G. The best way to get more from your reading is to discuss it with others
