Dear Jerry,

Glad to learn that you had interest in Chinese food. Here I’d like to tell you something about them. There is a wide variety of food in China. For example, Shanghai food, a little bit sweet, differ from Sichuan food which is rather hot. However, every kind of Chinese food is worth try because each has rich and balance nutrition. Different Chinese restaurants usual serve different dishes. I guess the Cantonese cuisine (粤菜), it is a bit light, may suit you. I hope you can come China and experience the Chinese food culture.

Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay, Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the U. S. top out at an average of 19.42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.

“5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age,” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.

Augmented reality glasses and virtual headset haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or perhaps even replace — smartphones.

Ericsson stated at February’s Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power.

But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure construction so 5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities.

1.What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 1?

A. The lighting-fast speed of 5G.

B. The expectation of 5G world.

C. The difference between 4G and 5G

D. The internet-connected devices in our life.

2.What does the underlined word “emblem” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Exhibition. B. Success.

C. Symbol. D. Explanation.

3.We can infer from the text that ________.

A. 5G world won’t come without AR glasses

B. 5G helps to create the artificial intelligence vehicle

C. Apple company is developing AR glasses worldwide

D. Tech companies will face the fact that smartphones may be replaced

4.What will the author probably tell us next?

A. How to fully expand 5G coverage.

B. Smart glasses will become faster and lighter.

C. Why 5G isn’t concentrated in big cities.

D. The importance of infrastructure construction.

Researchers have found bees can do basic mathematics, in a discovery that deepens our understanding of the relationship between brain size and brain power. Recently, A study conducted by researchers from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia showed that bees could perform arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction (减法).

Solving math problems requires a complex level of involving the mental management of numbers, long-term rules and short-term working memory. The finding that even the tiny brain of a honeybee can grasp basic mathematical operations has a possible effect on the future development of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in improving rapid learning.

RMIT’s Professor Adrian Dyer said numerical (数字的) operations like addition and subtraction are complex because they require two levels of processing. “You need to be able to hold the rules around adding and subtracting in your long-term memory, while mentally using skillfully a set of given numbers in your short-term memory,” Dyer said. “On top of this, our bees also used their short-term memories to solve arithmetic problems, as they learned to recognize plus or minus as abstract concepts.”

The findings suggest that advanced numerical cognition (认知) may be found much more widely in nature among non-human animals than previously suspected.

“If math doesn’t require a massive brain, there might also be new ways for us to include interactions of both long-term rules and working memory in designs to improve rapid AI learning of new problems,” said Dyer.

Many species can understand the difference between quantities and use this to search for food, make decisions and solve problems. But numerical cognition, such as exact number and arithmetic operations, requires a more complex level of processing.

Previous studies have shown some primates (灵长目动物), birds, babies and even spiders can add and/or subtract. The new research, published in Science Advances, adds bees to that list.

1.What have the researchers from RMIT University discovered?

A. The relationship between brain size and brain power.

B. Long-term rules and short term working memory.

A. requires addition and subtraction two complex processing

B. has a possible effect on the future development of AI

C. only involves their short-term working memory

D. calls for a lot of maths knowledge

3.What does the finding of the new research suggest?

A. Bees can recogize the exact number.

B. Arithmetic operations exist in human and bees.

C. Numerical cognition has been found in many more species.

D. Some primates, birds and even spiders can add and substract.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A. A Discovery About the Tiny Brain of Bees

B. New Findings About Bees Having Numerical Cogintion

C. Numerical Cognition Requires a Complex Level of Processing

Five thousand square meters of old damaged cars, motorcycles and boats fill this junkyard. For a casual onlooker, this might be a very sad sight. But for Andy, it’s a real treasure. “I’ve been a junk hoarder (囤积者) for my whole life and I like fixing up what shouldn’t be thrown away. Around 200 old cars end up in this junkyard every week. Some of them are sold for parts, others get repaired, and still others are beyond repair.”

His father Bobby started the business some 50 years ago and still spends every morning there. The father and son have very different approaches to their work. They got a Dean cab that was getting thrown away and that was the father’s project, which Andy did not want him to do. “He did basically the opposite of everything I told him and I think he did it just to make me mad. He dumped a ton of money into this car, but in the end it wouldn’t run.” Andy said jokingly.

The unusual family business attracted the attention of a TV crew. That’s how the show Janka Empire came to be featured on a network of the Discovery Channel. This show, five years of shooting, five seasons and 60 episodes (), is popular. “There are hundreds of junkyards throughout the United States. I think what’s interesting is that it is a family business. My father and I started the business and we joke very well back and forth and I think that’s what people like. The cars that end up at the junkyard come out with endless surprises. See, this was a junk car and we restored it with a blown motor. Yet I don’t get a chance to ride around it too often. Because despite its shining appearance, the noise of the engine is truly deafening and I worry my neighbors will not put up with it.”

1.What does Andy seem to like about his junkyard?

A. It is very large.

B. It may be a bad sight.

C. It is amazing and valuable.

D. It is his life dreamland.

B. The son is impatient and fed up with his father.

C. The father and son get on well with each other.

D. The father and son often disagree with each other.

3.Why is the show Janka Empire popular?

A. There are hundreds of junkyards in the United States.

B. Bobby and Andy run their family business in an unusual way.

C. The show is a series of 5 seasons and 60 episodes.

D. Bobby and Andy can make the junk car attractive.

4.Which of the following words can best describe Bobby and Andy?

A. Devoted and creative. B. Funny and ridiculous.

C. Gentle and respectable. D. Economical and wealthy.

Friendship, do you value?

Friendship is a gift of God.But it may be taken for granted in some cases and not valued.1. Say one has no child even after many years of marriage and the other has many children, more than they can manage. What do you think? Will the couple with many children value the children as much as the couple which has none? Everything is relative in life.We value what we don't have and give less value to what is freely available to us.2.

Why should we value friendships? What qualities does a good friend bring to our relationship that makes the friendship so valuable? Let us examine some of these.

Judgment — A good friend is rarely judgmental. We can be open in our behavior with our good friends because we know that they will not judge us.3. With other people our actions and behavior are always calculated and guarded and that takes away lots of pleasure from our life.

Share sorrow and losses — A friend can be depended upon to share all our problems and sorrows.

4.Once I saw the image of a man left alone in a village after an earthquake. The whole village got killed except this man. With whom, will this man share his sorrow? A friend gives us this gift.

Hope — During our times of trouble, only a friend comes forward and gives us encouragement and hope.5.

AThis sharing may not reduce the loss but helps us unburden ourselves.

BThis is no small gift of friendship.

CSome of us are blessed with good friends.

DFriendship is one such relationship.

EIt is similar to a case of two couples.

FWe can enjoy this freedom only with friends.

GWith that inspiration, we regain confidence in ourselves.

It is not only praise or punishment that determines a child's level of confidence. There are some other important ways we shape our kids — particularly by giving instructions and commands in a negative or positive choice of words. For example, we can say to a child “Don't run into traffic” or “Stay on the footpath close to me.” In using the latter, you will be helping your kids to think and act positively, and to feel competent in a wide range of situations, because they know what to do, and aren't scaring themselves with what not to do.

Actually, it is all in the way the human mind works. What we think, we automatically rehearse. For example, if someone offered you a million dollars not to think of a blue monkey for two minutes, you wouldn't be able to do it.When a child is told “Don't fall off the tree” he will think of two things“don't” and “fall off the tree”. That is, he will automatically create the picture of falling off the tree in his mind.A child who is vividly imagining falling off the tree is much more likely to fall off.So it is far better to use “Hold on to the tree carefully.”

Clear, positive instructions help kids to understand the right way to do things.Kids do not always know how to be safe, or how to react to the warning of the danger in negative words. So parents should make their commands positive.“Sam, hold on firmly to the side of the boat” is much more useful than “Don't you dare to fall out of the boat” or “How do you think I'll feel if you drown” The changes are small but the difference is obvious.

Children learn how to guide and organize themselves from the way we guide them with our words, so it pays to be positive.

1.Positive choice of words helps kids to ________.

A. learn in different situations B. do things carefully

C. build up their confidence D. improve their imagination

2.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A. A child will act on what is instructed.

B. One can't help imagining what is heard.

C. A child will fall off the tree when told not to.

D. One won't think of a blue monkey when given money.

3.Which of the following commands helps kids to be safe?

A. How do you think I'll feel if you get hurt? B. Don't play by the lake.

C. Don't you dare to walk through the red light? D. Fasten your seat belt.

4.The main idea of the passage is that ________.

A. positive instructions guide kids B. praise makes kids confident

C. right instructions keep kids safe D. clear commands make kids different

Career success could be predicted as early as kindergarten, according to a 20year study recently published in the American journal Public Health.

Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700 children from across the US between kindergarten and age 25 and found a significant connection between their social skills as kindergarteners and their success as adults two decades later.

In the research, teachers assessed how the kindergarteners interacted with each other socially using a range of criteria like whether they cooperate with their peers without being encouraged, whether they're helpful to others, whether they're good at understanding feelings, and whether they can solve problems on their own.

Researchers then kept track of whether the students go on to graduate from high school on time, get a college degree, and find and keep a fulltime job by 25. They also monitored the participants' involvement with crime, drug abuse, public assistance, and mental health issues.

The results showed that socially capable children are far more likely to earn a college degree and have a fulltime job by 25 than those with limited social skills. Those with limited social skills also have a higher chance of getting arrested, binge drinking, and applying for public housing.

“This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future,” said Kristin Schubert, program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the research, in a release. “From an early age, these skills can determine whether a child goes to college or prison, and whether they end up employed or addicted.”

The good news, according to Damon Jones, lead author of the study, is that intervention (干预) at a young age can help improve social and emotional skills.

“This research by itself doesn't prove that higher social ability can lead to better outcomes later on, ” he said. “But when combined with other research, it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school, work, and life.”

1.What did the 20year study find?

A. Social skills play a key role in children's development.

B. Helpful children understand others' feelings better.

C. Most kindergarteners can solve problems alone.

D. Outgoing children cooperate with their peers easily.

2.What's Paragraph 2 and 3 mainly about?

A. When the researchers began their study.

B. How the researchers conducted the study.

C. How long it took to complete the study.

D. What factors were studied by the researchers.

3.What should parents do to help their children to succeed according to Kristin Schubert?

A. Teach them some basic living skills.

B. Tell them to keep off alcohol.

C. Coach them in their lessons.

D. Teach them how to cooperate with others.

4.According to the passage, it is probably intended for ________.

A. teenagers B. doctors

C. educators D. general readers

Many years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4, we were practically impecunious. My parentsinlaws lived from hand to mouth, so we didn't expect any help from them. My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation.

My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pickup truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down. It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.

We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it. One winter evening, I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was. I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.

It was heavy, so I called my husband to carry it into the house. Once inside, we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables, a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I couldn't remember it all, but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner — everything except potatoes.

A little while later I remembered that I hadn't taken the trash to the barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light — and that's when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch.

That dinner was the best I could remember.

We weren't able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was, we are forever grateful.

How to Survive Being Stuck in a Lift

Being stuck in a lift, also known as an elevator, can sometimes be scary, especially if you are a fan of those kinds of movies which have a lot of elevator tragedies. You may think being stuck in an elevator in real life is not like in the movies.1.

Remain calm and do not panic! You may have heard of this a lot of times and it is true that panicking will do you no good. 2.

Press each of the floor buttons one by one. Then, try the “doors open” button. If none of the buttons works, the lift is broken, and you need to let someone know about it.

See if your phone has any reception or Internet. 3. If you have WiFi connection, contact a family member or friend. Don’t forget to tell them what the address is of the building and possibly which elevator you are stuck in. If your phone is not available, the following tips can help you.

Look through the gap between the doors of the lift. If you can see light between the doors, the lift has stopped near a floor, and you should be able to shout for help and be released. Do not try to force the doors open yourself. If you can’t see light between the doors, the lift has stopped between floors, and no one will be able to let you out if you scream for help. Look for an emergency telephone. If there is no telephone, press the alarm button repeatedly. 4.

5.If you have waited for more than half an hour and nobody has come to get you out, shout and bang the inside walls of the lift. If no one is responding to you, then you’ll have to accept that you will be in the lift overnight. If this happens, make yourself as comfortable as possible to save your energy. By morning, the building should be full again. You can try to get some help then.

A.It will cause you not to be able to think clearly.

B. Check the time.

C. Eventually, someone should hear you and get help.

D. Here are some tips to help you survive.

E. However, it is still a vital thing to know how to survive if it ever happens to you.

F. Use your watch.

G. If you do have reception, call emergency services.

In this Pennsylvania city, Pittsburgh is shrinking but getting wealthier. Since 2000, its population has declined by 95,000 while its income per capita (人均) has shot up 24 percent. The trend is taking hold in many other cities, like Buffalo in New York, Providence in Rhode Island and New Orleans.

Some of these areas have created more high-paying jobs in energy, health care or education. Others have managed to reshape their producing industry for a new economy. Higher-paying jobs have a greater effect because they create demand for additional services. "The story in Pittsburgh is very positive, and other areas are looking at it as an example of the transformation that might be possible,” said Guhan Venkatu, who wrote an economic history of the area called “Rust and Renewal” for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have helped bring tech jobs and innovation(革新) to the area by sponsoring tech centers that help graduates start companies without moving to Silicon Valley or San Francisco. This has helped keep Pittsburgh's educated young population growing even as the entire population in the city has dropped.

Pittsburgh has more STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs than other shrinking cities, about 80, 000 or 7% of all jobs. STEM jobs add productivity and income growth to the area. Manufacturers of high-tech medical equipment in the Pittsburgh area also have doubled employment in the last 10 years.

However, some experts question whether growing income per capita can really make up for a declining population. According to Patrick Adler, a researcher at the University of Toronto, population loss does matter if it means lower-skilled workers have fled because of a lack of opportunity. What's more, high-paying jobs in education and health care can disappear if the population declines too greatly. So it'd be wise to find ways to increase the population.

1.In what aspect does Pittsburgh set a good example?

A. Transforming old energy into new energy. B. Prohibiting the manufacturing.

C. Creating more well-paid jobs. D. Sponsoring higher education.

2.How do some academic institutions help with the local economy ?

A. By helping to attract more talents from home and abroad.

B. By providing much technical support to local companies.

C. By hosting tech centers to allow local educated graduates to stay.

D. By assisting in employing a large number of educated youths.

3.Why is Patrick Adler mentioned in the last paragraph?

A. To suggest increasing high-paying jobs.

B. To raise doubts about growing income per capita.

C. To tell a reason why lower-skilled workers flee.

D. To show the disadvantage of a declining population.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Why Some Cities Are Losing People but Getting Wealthier

B. How Fast Job Growth Is Related to Population Growth

C. How Less-crowded Cities Plan Their High-tech Economy

D. Why Some Cities Are Suffering From a Shrinking Population

There are many programs for high school students today that help lonely teenagers deal with loneliness. However, loneliness is not only a problem for teens but also an important and rarely acknowledged one in the elderly.

In Britain, Tracey Crouch was appointed to be the first Minister of Loneliness in order to address the problems caused by loneliness. This is the first time such a position has been created.

In Britain, there are around 9 million people who say they are lonely frequently. In Germany, a study conducted by Ruhr University Bochum found that 20 percent of people over the age of 85 felt lonely, and 14 percent of those between age 45 and 65 felt socially lonely. In the United States, more than 25 percent of the population live alone, more than 50 percent are unmarried.

Loneliness is generally associated with heart disease, overweight, and anxiety. Additionally, the stress from loneliness can cause your cells to change on a molecular (分子) level that reduces its abilities to defend your body against diseases. In fact, doctors believe having feelings of loneliness is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day in regard to its effect on health!

In Britain, the new Minister of Loneliness will help introduce government policies on the problem and fund a charity—an organization for helping people in need, to devote their efforts towards aiding loneliness. There are charities that link lonely seniors to high school students in order to give them a line of communication whenever they feel lonely!

The possibilities for the new Minister of Loneliness are endless. For example, she can provide education services to household businesses so that they can identify lonely customers if they see one. Loneliness fits into the category of being a social problem that must be monitored by the entire community in order to help those in need. Therefore, government involvement in medical services and care for seniors and others is vital for happy seniors.

1.How does the author develop Paragraph 3?

A. By listing some statistics.

B. By giving examples of lonely people

C. By pointing out similarities and differences.

D. By comparing different cultures in different countries

2.What does the underlined word “equivalent” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. Relevant B. Opposite

C. Similar D. Superior

3.What will the Minister of Loneliness do?

A. Do housework for lonely people

B. Help fund charities to aid lonely people

C. Communicate with anxious school students

D. Develop friendships with the elderly

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A. UK becomes the capital of loneliness

B. Loneliness affects old people’s life worldwide.

C. Many teenagers suffer from loneliness

D. UK’s Minister of Loneliness settles loneliness.

Jon Hoffman was sitting at a red light when he saw a man run out of a store carrying a plastic donation jar full of cash. The Plano, Texas, detective, dressed in plain clothes but wearing his badge (徽章) and gun, caught the man and pinned him to the hood of his car. But Hoffman had trouble containing the thief, and they got into a struggle.

“The detective has a martial arts background, and he said he thought the suspect must have a martial arts background, too, because he was able to break away so easily,” a Plano police spokesperson said.

The detective called out for help as a crowd gathered. Among those watching: Andre Harvey and Kirby Sample, two day laborers. Harvey did what has become common these days—he took out his phone and hit record. “I hate to say it, but I thought that this policeman was doing something illegal,” Harvey said. “But when he asked for help, I thought, well, there won’t be a shooting if I get over there in time.” Harvey jumped into action—while he was still recording the video—as did Sample.

“Harvey caught hold of the suspect’s arms, while Kirby seized his legs, and they were able to get the suspect to the ground to help Detective Hoffman put the handcuffs (手铐) on,” said the police spokesperson. The 27-year-old suspect was charged with resisting arrest and other offenses. The charity jar he stole held less than $ 50.

“I’ve been on the wrong side of the law several times in my life,” Harvey told WFAA. “It feels good to be on the right side and do something positive.”

After the arrest, the three men got to know each other over steaks and ribs at a local steak house—Hoffman’s treat, as a thank-you. But the rescuers say Hoffman deserves credit too. “It could have turned real ugly.” Sample told the media “He handled himself like a real professional.”

1.What made Hoffman call for help when arresting the suspect?

A. He was not on duty. B. He needed witnesses to support him.

C. He wanted to push the thief into the car. D. He couldn’t control the suspect.

2.Why did Harvey and Kirby record the scene at the beginning?

A. To follow the fashion. B. To keep track of the criminal.

C. To record the detective’s violence. D. To avoid being involved in the incident.

3.What can be inferred about Harvey?

A. He was ready to violate the law. B. He might have had some illegal behaviour.

C. He was out of work at that time. D. He had a good martial arts background.

4.What is Harvey and Sample’s attitude towards Hoffman?

A. Appreciative. B. Prejudiced.

C. Skeptical. D. Cautious.

Dark Sky Parks around the World

Warrumbungle National Park

Situated in the central west slopes of New South Wales is Australia’s only dark sky park, Warrumbungle. The park has served as a dark sky park since July 2016. Its crystal-clear night skies and high altitude make it a natural, educational, and astronomical heritage site in the southern half of the earth. Tourists can use Australia’s largest optical telescope within the park boundaries to view the auroras(极光)the Milky Way, and faint shooting stars.

Sark

Sark is a Channel Island near the coast of Normandy under the protection of the UK. It was the World’s First Dark Sky Island set up in January 2011. Its historical and cultural blend attracts over 40,000 tourists annually. With no motor vehicles and public lighting on the island, there is an exceptional view of the dark skies. A rich Milky Way is visible in the dark night skies from the shores of the island.

Pic du Midi de Bigorre

Pic du Midi de Bigorre in France was designated as a dark sky park in December 2013 making it the second largest dark sky park in the world. The park covers 3.112 square kilometers spread across the Pyrenees National Park and UNESCO’s World Heritage site, Pyrenees-Mont Perdu. The park attracts over one hundred star watchers every year. The Observatory Midi-Pyrenees, which was built in 1870, is one of the world’s highest museums at a height of 2,877 meters above sea level.

Ramon Crater/Makhtesh Ramon

Ramon Crater is a unique 1,100-square-kilometer nature reserve located in the Negev Desert in Israel. In 2017, the Ramon Crater became the first designated dark sky park in the Middle East.
