Fun Writing Activities for Struggling Writers

There are dozens of reasons kids struggle with writing. They may have difficulty getting their thoughts down on paper.1.Perhaps grammar and language barriers are blocking their progress. Whatever the reason, adding a little fun can be a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

2.

Sometimes writers get stuck because they simply don’t know where to start. For a child, you can try things that are geared(合适)toward their interests, like My Favorite Toy, or What I Like to Do in the Summer. Remember,  it' s important to support and guide their ideas, not to discourage thoughts or judge them.

Develop a story map

A great activity to help struggling writers is to build a story map. Write down ideas for the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Or put the topic in the middle of the paper and draw lines out like a wheel for who, what where, and why. 3. This is helpful, because it takes stress out of the writing process.

Make writing relevant

Children are more apt to write if they can identify with the purpose of writing. Writing a letter to a friend or relative can better engage a struggling writer. Or maybe your child has some suggestions for books that the library should have. 4. If writing becomes a more meaningful activity to the child, it can help to make it an easier process.

Make writing enjoyable

You could consider making different writing supplies available like colored pens and pencils, notebooks, etc. Or you could provide a word bank of common words for your kid to use and spell. 5. Afterwards, reward your child’s good performance. These all set the stage and invite kids to get excited to write.

A. Inspire ideas

B. Develop an interest.

C. Use the map to guide the writing.

D. Make the process into more of a game.

E. Maybe they lack experiences to write about

F. There are loads of fun ways to get children writing.

G. Encourage him to write a letter to the person in charge

Your colleague’s sharp comment keeps replaying in your mind. Two of your students are trapped in a “he said/she said” battle. When you reflect on your emotional reactions, you sometimes get caught up in cycles of negative feelings, which can make you feel even worse. If so, the answer may lie in a skill called “self-distancing”the ability to take a step back and view yourself more objectively. According to a research, when people adopt self-distancing while discussing a difficult event, they make better sense of their reactions, experience less emotional suffering, and display fewer signs of stress.

But what might self-distancing look like in action? Consider a typical “he said/she said” student conflict where they are each focusing on their own feelings. One is thinking“I can’t believe he did that to me.” And another insists, “She really hurt my feelings.” However, if you ask them to take the self-distancing, they might step outside of themselves and ask broader questions: “Why was he so hurt in this situation?” or “How did her anger affect him?”

Although this approach may sound too simple to be effective, studies indicate that a change in point of view can have a powerful effect on the way people think, feel, and behave. Here are several different techniques you can try.

Firstconsider how a thoughtful friend might respond after quietly observing their situation. Besides, avoid using the pronoun “I”. Focus on using third-person pronouns, he, she, they, and they were able to see the stressful event as challenging rather than threatening. Finally, ask yourself, “How would I feel about this one week from now or ten years from now?” This form of mental time travel may be effective because our attention is directed away from our immediate, concrete circumstances.

1.What is self-distancing?

A. Getting stuck in negative emotions. B. A stressful situation.

C. A study on relieving emotional stress. D. Reflecting on yourself objectively.

2.Paragraph 2 is developed by____.

A. example B. definition

C. classification D. process

3.Which of the following statement uses the techniques of self-distancing?

A. I’m angry with him.

B. How I wish I could go back to the past!

C. How did these two people get to this point?

D. He grabbed my notes, and then, and then...

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A. Why Self-distancing Matters

B. The Application of Self-distancing

C. Breaking the Cycle of Negative Reflection

D. Ways to Reflect on Emotional Reactions

One spring day, once the flowers have begun to open, a bee will hover (盘旋) and zip through your yard and dive-bomb your picnic table. While you're thinking about avoiding an attack, that bee is focused on something else entirely: me.

A honeybee has about six weeks to live. Today, like most days, her task is to fly as many as three miles from home, stick her long, straw-like tongue into a hundred or so flowers. When the bee has had her fill, shell fly home. There the bee will deposit what she has got into the mouth of one of her co-workers, who will relay it to another, and so on for about 20 minutes, until the mixture is ready to be placed into the comb. Then she and her 50 000 or so mates will hover in the dark all night every night, flapping their wings to create hot, breezy conditions to remove the water from the mixture. Several sunrises later, they will seal me off in a golden cell of beeswax. In her lifetime, our bee may visit 4,000 flowers, and yet will produce only one-twelfth of a tea spoon of me.

The average American consumes nearly a pound and a half of me every year, in tea, on toast, and beyond. If I do say so myself, I am a timeless treasure. Literally---I never go bad.

Alas, my good health is not guaranteed. The problem lies in the growth of industrial agriculture and the use of pest control chemicals, as well as changes in weather patterns, all of which reduce the number of flowers bees have to visit I'd appreciate your letting your own garden grow just a little wild My future depends on all of us fostering spring and summers wild flowers, thus helping the bees, who give so much---to you, to me---without ever asking for anything in return..

1.What does " me" refer to in the passage?

A. The flower B. The bee.

C. Water D. Honey

2.What is the 2nd paragraph mainly about?

A. Bees' special talent B. Bees' hard work.

C. Bees' living environment. D. Bees' social behavior.

3.What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To appeal for help for honeybees.

B. To talk about the history of a treasure.

C. To put forward techniques for gardeners.

D. To argue against the control of chemicals.

A recent documentary produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has caused a stir in China and in the UK.

The documentary, titled Are Our Kids Tough Enough? focuses on five Chinese teachers who are sent to teach 50 UK teens at a school in Hampshire.

The teachers instruct the students for a month. The pupils are then tested, and the results are compared to the ones of those who have continued in the regular UK education system. The idea is to see if the Chinese method improves academic performance.

The Chinese teachers use their own teaching methods but receive strong resistance from the students. A clip from the documentary online shows some problems, with Chinese teachers calling their students lazy and lacking in discipline, while the students say the high pressure and harsh teachers are driving them crazy.

This has aroused a new debate in both China and the UK, with some arguing the teenagers need more regulation and discipline. Others say Chinese methods encourage rote learning (死记硬背) instead of independent thinking. For instance, Chinese language teachers should do more than pass on knowledge about words and characters. They should inspire students, helping them feel the sentiment from Chinese literature. This is a higher level of teaching.

Yang Dongping, dean of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, says, “The Chinese teaching methods are designed to strictly train the majority. Foreign teaching methods, however, are more natural and relaxing, and designed to inspire students’ interest in learning. Education methods are based on culture. That is why a successful education method in one place may not work that well when simply ‘transplanted’ into another place.”

Yang Dongping says, “The documentary does reflect some problems rooted in traditional Chinese teaching methods. Nobel prize winner, Yang Zhenning, gave a very fair comment on this issue. He said the Chinese-style education method works for most ordinary qualified students effectively, helping them reach high standards. However, it may weaken the training for high-potential outstanding students.”

1.Why are five Chinese teachers sent to teach 50 UK teens?

A. To test the intelligence of the UK teens.

B. To help the school improve their teaching efficiency.

C. To do some practical research into the UK education system.

D. To test the effectiveness of Chinese teaching methods.

2.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “harsh” in the fourth paragraph?

A. Extremely strict B. Quite friendly

C. Rather cold D. Very attractive

3.According to Yang Dongping, Chinese teaching methods ______.

A. fit all countries B. could be improved

C. are the best in the world D. are not as good as British methods

I would like to have a smart robot that can do plenty of the things for me. For example, it can clean my room and make the bed, keeps everything in order. I hope it will be programmed to do homeworks without making mistakes. In that way, I can turn to it wherever I need help with my study. Beside, it can take care of my little brother, who often bothered me much. Then I can have more free time to do what I’m fond. It doesn’t matter much whether it is shaped like, but it must be able to communicate with me and understand its feelings. How wonderfully life will become with such a magic robot!

Some people think working overtime means you’re a hard worker. You have to sacrifice your personal time to stay at work, produce something, help the company, and be a more devoted employee. But is that right? 1. This means it takes you longer to produce something than someone else.

A good manager knows how to encourage his employees to work to their full potential instead of expecting them to work late even if they don’t have something to do. People who stay in their office until late hate their jobs. 2.

Overworking may negatively influence the level of productivity and efficiency(效率). Any company that makes their employees work those hours is not being managed well. The fault lies with management, who should take a good look at themselves. 3. And the boss would prefer you work efficiently 7 hours and then go back home than 8  hours with poor efficiency.

4. The fact is the competition is so fierce that if you don’t work hard someone will easily and willingly replace you, especially in the IT industry. Employees are told they need to work longer hours or they don’t belong or are denied promotions. It is time to abandon the culture of overworking, to work smarter, more efficiently and have a balance with personal life.

Nowadays, it’s hard for a young person to build a good future, for pressures are on his (or her) shoulders: housing, children, parents, themselves, etc. But everyone must keep working hard to have ourselves on the way to the good future, which is not certain. 5.

A. No one wants to work overtime.

B. The boss thinks highly of overworking.

C. Working too many hours only means you are inefficient.

D. And it affects their performance, as well as other aspects of their life.

E. What’s sure is that if you’re lazy and don’t work hard, no good future will come.

F. Managers believe that overworking is an evidence of devotion from their employees’ side.

G. In many countries, overworking would be criticized because it reflects poor work efficiency.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them as a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit neatly into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but foldable phone is about to become available. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both launched foldable phones, the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X respectively. Mobile phone use has entered the “foldable future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their bendable screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the combination of a small tablet and smartphone, all in a single device”.

The technology could change other devices, too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to maximize available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the foldable screen “the foundation for the smartphone of tomorrow”. “It’s a blank canvas (画布) for us to do something beautiful together.” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the foldable future? According to tech news website Android Authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every 10 OLED (二极管) screens produced were imperfect. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these foldable devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that few people will be able to afford.

But if the foldable device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming. Patrick Moorhead, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if foldable or rollable mobile displays are the future of smartphones; the only question is when and by whom.”

1.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Screen devices on the market. B. Foldable age is arriving.

C. Possible powers of a tablet. D. Foldable screens are imperfect.

2.What can we learn from Justin Denison’s words?

A. The foldable screen has great potential.

B. The Galaxy Fold still has many problems.

C. The production of foldable phones will soon increase.

D. Companies need to work together to develop foldable phone.

3.What is the problem with foldable phones at the moment?

A. They are easy to break. B. They are inconvenient to carry.

C. They are not as useful as expected. D. They are unaffordable for most families.

4.What is the author’s attitude toward the future of the foldable screen?

A. Worried. B. Cautious. C. Positive. D. Unconcerned.

A name is more than just a word. It carries the weight of a person’s whole identity. A name can represent a person’s ethnicity (种族身份) and culture, or show respect for their ancestral roots. A self-given name may represent a person’s beliefs or chosen identity.

Everyone has the right to have their name pronounced correctly. It is a sign of respect for a person’s individuality. “A person’s name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language,” Dale Carnegie writes in his book How to Win Friends and Influence People. Behind each name is a story, and when a name is anglicized (英语化), mispronounced, or ignored, that story is dismissed.

A name mispronounced for a long time can negatively impact a person’s attitude toward their own identity. It can create feelings of shame or embarrassment because they are made to feel like a burden. In the long term, this might cause someone to distance themselves from their roots. They may begin shying away from their native language, culture, and family for the sake of fitting in.

In order to avoid this, many international students living in the U.S. choose English names. People shouldn’t have to ignore their identities for the sake of someone else’s convenience.

Everyone makes mistakes, and not everyone can get a name right on the first try. Mispronouncing a name repeatedly, however, shows a lack of effort. It is not okay to be comfortable with mispronouncing names, and being unfamiliar with a language is no excuse.

If you’re unsure whether you’re pronouncing a name correctly, just ask. Think of it as a way to expand and strengthen understanding, both personally and culturally. When meeting someone for the first time, make sure that you heard the name correctly. It doesn’t take a lot to simply repeat the name back. Spell it out. Write it down. Do whatever you have to do to get the name right. Making the effort to correctly pronounce someone’s name is an essential part of cultural competency (文化素养). Without this, we cannot expect to show respect and tolerance for our diverse community.

1.What may a person’s name tell us?

A. His cultural background. B. His physical appearance.

C. His favorite sound. D. His attitude to life.

2.What’s the long-term influence of mispronouncing ones name?

A. The feeling of shame may be caused.

B. The person may feel over-burdened.

C. The character of the person may change.

D. The person may try to hide his roots.

3.What does the writer think of mispronouncing a name repeatedly?

A. It is unavoidable. B. It is unacceptable.

C. It strengthens friendship. D. It shows discrimination.

4.What’s the last paragraph mainly about?

A. How to show our respect for others. B. How to avoid mispronouncing names.

C. How to improve our pronunciation. D. How to live harmoniously in a community.

This year marks the 170th anniversary of Paul Gauguin’s birth. He lived for just 54 years but he packed his brief life with activity.

The French painter spent his early childhood in Peru before returning to France. As an adult, he continued to travel a lot. Most famously, he spent much of the last decade of his life in Tahiti, an island in southern Pacific Ocean. Indeed, Gauguin is best known for his colorful paintings of Tahitians and their culture.

The restlessness of this great painter has been normal among modern artists since the middle of the 19th century. They’re never satisfied for long with a certain style or way of life. Once something becomes conventional, it’s turned down.

The artistic culture that Gauguin developed from was that of Impressionism (印象派). Painters like Claude Monet had wanted to paint how they saw the world, not how their teachers taught them it should be seen. Gauguin, and similar artists like his friend Vincent van Gogh, moved even further away from “respectable” art than the Impressionists. For them, it was not simply a matter of seeing the world differently, but feeling and thinking about it differently, too.

Gauguin saw, felt and thought differently from most members of European society. He thought that European culture was too fancy and not spontaneous. This is why he turned to the traditions of other parts of the world, like Africa, and, eventually, Tahiti. Artists like Gauguin used the word “primitive” for these cultures, but not as a negative term. For him, Europe, in becoming modem, industrial and scientific, seemed less natural than other parts of the world.

In truth, Gauguin’s paintings may be unconventional but they are certainly not “primitive”. They are the work of a painter with great awareness of what he was doing. It was this awareness that made him such an important painter for those that came after, in the 20th century. When we look closely at the works of Gauguin we begin to understand Pablo Picasso, and especially Henri Matisse, a little better.

1.What can we infer about Gauguin’s life?

A. He had an unhappy childhood. B. He lived most of his life in Peru.

C. He enjoyed painting in Tahiti. D. He preferred a traditional life style.

2.What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 4?

A. To explain why Gauguin’s works were popular.

B. To point out where Gauguin’s inspiration came from.

C. To show Gauguin’s different understanding of painting.

D. To compare Gauguin’s painting style with Vincent van Gogh’s.

3.Which of the following best explains “spontaneous” underlined in Paragraph 5?

A. Natural. B. Modern. C. Industrial. D. Scientific.

4.The author mentions Picasso and Matisse in the last paragraph to show ________.

A. their styles are different from Gauguin’s B. great artists share many similarities

C. they are as important as Gauguin D. Gauguin’s influence on their works

The idea of living on the moon is no long science fiction. However, there will be drawbacks to live there as well as advantage.

On the positive side, people will be able to escape from the crowding cities, but will have clear views of the earth and stars.

On the other hand, the moon is a unfriendly place for humans. First of all, people will have to wear special suits and if their equipment fails, it will probably die. Secondly, they will have to get used to be weightless. Finally, they’ll probably miss the plants and wildlife that exists on the earth.

In all, the moon might be an ideal place where humans take over a holiday or scientists carry out researches, but not a place for ordinary people to live all the time.

Nowadays along with the booming of computer science, computers are widely used here and there. People even can find computers in most classrooms. While teachers remain more or less the same, computers are doubling in speed and capability every four years. 1. As far as I am concerned, teachers still play a major role and are still of great importance.

2. However advanced they may be, computers are nothing more than human inventions programmed to perform certain tasks.

They are unable to deal with students with different background. Needless to say, a classroom is a place where individual attention and creativity matter most. Therefore, computers are no better than other tools used by teachers and couldn’t possibly make the roles played by them weaker.

In terms of accuracy and the amount of information, computers outshine humans. 3. Indeed, a good teacher organizes and inspires the students.

Besides, the interaction between students and teachers is vital for the learning. According to most education authorities, real learning occurs during the discussion and sharing of ideas with one’s teacher and classmates. Moreover, a teacher is there to monitor every slight change in students’ attitude, to respond to and encourage them whenever they show signs of frustration and impatience. 4.

Despite the increasing presence of computers inside classrooms, teachers are just as essential, if not more so, as instructors were in the past. 5.

A. It’s time that teachers should develop themselves.

B. Without this kind of interaction, education is unimaginable.

C. Advanced as computers may be, some teachers are less impatient.

D. But to make a good teacher means far more than being an encyclopedia (百科全书).

E. People can’t help wondering whether teachers are as important as they once were.

F. Some drawbacks make it impossible for computers to replace teachers in classrooms.

G. It is well known that computers are better at repetitive work but incapable of creative thinking.

Connecting with people has become so much easier with advancing technology. Tasks that once required a postage stamp or carrier pigeon are now as simple as tapping a name or even a face on your screen, and you’re connected. But also easier is unconsciously getting caught up in a dilemma by violating certain new rules for communicating. A big one for some: Don’t call until you’ve texted to confirm it’s OK to call. But that’s just the beginning.

“I’m usually pretty mild and not much bothers me,” said Mark Angielle, a 29-year-old office manager from White Plains, New York. But the one thing that he hates more than anything else in life is the terrible one-word message — “K.” “At the very least reply with, Got it.” he said “At least give me a few words here. You’re not that busy.”

There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of others who have taken Lo social media to express their distaste for people who don’t follow the unwritten rules of digital communication.

“These rules are simply a new display of a phenomenon we’ve seen in the past,” said James Ivory, professor of communication a Virginia Tech. In the same way that generations and small groups of friends have their own slang and customs, internet culture has given birth to technology-dependent beings that have their own unique set of routine.

But not everyone gets the point. Unlike language, digital communication can be filled with ambiguous clues (线索、迹象) that the person on the other end of the call, text or email may or may not easily understand.

“As soon as people aren’t talking face to face, the first thing that gets lost is some of the richness of the body language,” Ivory said, “People immediately fill that gap by using emoji (表情符号) to sum up a feeling in seconds.

“There's great potential for danger,” Ivory warned. “What's considered polite in one form might be inappropriate or rude in another occasion.”

1.What can you infer about Mark from Paragraph 2?

A. He is a businessman with a bad temper.

B. He complains about social manners.

C. He can’t bear one- word messages.

D. He dislike a busy business life.

2.According to the text, which of the following breaks the rules for communicating?

A. John says “I got it.” to his boss face to face.

B. Jim calls Bill without confirming in advance.

C. Mary texts Lily to make sure if she can call her.

D. Jack sends “Thanks a lot” to his business friends.

3.Why may people misunderstand each other during digital communication?

A. Emoji cannot sum up feelings.

B. People use their own slang and customs.

C. There are large quantities of written rules.

D. People gets wrong messages without clear clues.

4.What are people expected to do after reading tie passage?

A. To obey their own digital communication rules.

B. To be aware of rules during digital communication.

C. To use advancing technology even with disadvantages.

D. To keep pace with digital communication development.
