How far would you go for your kids education? That 's a question many parents are asking in the wake of the college cheating scandal(丑闻)involving 38 wealthy parents around the country including actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman. Here’ s how far I went. In the fall of 2017 my husband and I lost our jobs. We had to tell our daughter, Casey, that we couldn’t afford to send her back to school for her junior year at Fordham University. We decided the best choice for our family would be for Casey to sit out a year. We promised that we would get her back the following year. Casey decided to spend the year volunteering in South Africa On Sept 30, 2017, we put our oldest child on a plane halfway around the world. Casey worked as a tutor teaching kids math, English and music in Johannesburg. We did get Casey back in school in time. When she returned to the campus, she studied harder. She isn't what she used to be. Each day is marked by gratitude because she knows what it is like not to be able to get an education.

I wonder why the college cheating scandal happened and I think it boils down to this: Parents want to create a comfort zone for their kids. Of course, we want the best for our kids but sometimes we forget that real growth doesn't happen in times of comfort; those valuable lessons come when we are forced to think in ways we otherwise wouldn’t have

While I did less for my child than these wealthy parents did in terms of means, in other ways I did more. I taught her that disappointment is a part of life and we should face it bravely rather than avoid it. My husband and I showed Casey that her strength is in her struggle. That's how far I went for my kid s education. And I dare say she is wiser and better off for it.

1.What do the parents involved in the college cheating scandal have in common?

A. They are well –known B. They are aggressive

C. They are very rich D. They are conservative.

2.The writer made the decision to pull Casey out of school__________

A. for lack of money B. because of her illness

C. as a result of cheatings D. due to her bad behaviour

3.What does the writer think of her daughter’s volunteering in South Africa for a year?

A. It’ s meaningless. B. It is well worth it.

C. It is a waste of time D. It is a wrong decision.

4.The writer advises parents to____.

A. create a comfort zone for their kids B. do whatever they can for their kids

C. help their kids have a better education D. let their kids experience disappointment

News anchors(主播) must have been reluctant to read out the following news: Xin Xiaomeng began working as the world’s first female artificial(人工的) intelligence news anchor at Xinhua News Agency on Sunday, three months after a male robot joined the profession.

Unlike previous news robots though, Xin does not read news like a cold machine; she reads it almost like a human being. The muscles on her face stretch and relax-and her reactions change-as she continues reading. That’s why many news anchors were worried: Will AI replace us in the near future?

To find the answer, we have to analyse the technologies that support Xin at her job. Three key technologies are used to support Xin. First, samples of human voices are collected and synthesized (合成). This is followed by the collection and synthesis of human muscle movement samples. And third the voices and movements are married in a way that when the Al news anchor reads, the micro -electric motors behind her face move to make her expressions seem more human.

Yet we need a thorough knowledge of deep leaning technology to make a robot imitate a person’s voice. The developer needs to collect tens of thousands of pieces of pronunciations, input them Into the machine and match them with the text or the Al to lean and read. The process for imitating facial movements is similar. The developer has to analyse the movements of the 53 muscles in the human face, make a model set from the collected data for the AI news anchor to lean, and imitate the movements of facial muscles via programs

Both the technologies used to make Xin’s performance impressive are mature. The real difficulty lies in the third -the technology to match the pronunciations with facial movements so that Xin expressions vary according to the content of the news report. In fact, Xins expressions don' t always change according to the content. As a result, her expressions look anything but human. Actually. AI is still no match for human qualities.

1.What does the underlined word "reluctant "in the first paragraph mean?

A. Delighted. B. Unwilling. C. Confused. D. Optimistic.

2.What can we infer about previous news robots?

A. They read news without expressions. B. They looked like a human being

C. They could interview sports stars D. They could interact with audience.

3.What do we know about the third technology?

A. This technology is very perfect so far

B. This technology is quite popular now

C. This technology remains at the theoretical stage

D. This technology is far from mature.

4.From the last paragraph, we can draw a conclusion that____.

A. human news anchors should learn from AT anchors to save their jobs

B. Al anchors perform much better than human news anchors at present

C. Al news anchors won 't replace human news anchors in the near future

D. Xin Xiaomeng s expressions vary so naturally that they are true to life

In early February 2019, 51-year-old Rainer Schimpf and his team set out to film South Africa’s Sardine Run off the coast of Point Elizabeth Sardine Run, the annual migration(迁徙)of billions of sardines (a small sea fish), is a big draw for large predators, especially the dolphin and whale. Predators are animals that kill and eat other animals. In an attempt to obtain the best images of the incredible natural phenomenon, Rainer dived into the middle of a spinning ball of fish. Suddenly the sea moved around violently, and the experienced diver and his photographer Heinz Toperczer, who was filming from the boat, instantly realized something strange was going on Suddenly dolphins shot out of the water, a white spray came out and then a whale appeared and grasped Rainer

While Toperczer was filming the terrifying turn of events with his video camera, Rainer, who was trapped had first and engulfed(吞噬)in darkness inside the whales mouth, was trying to survive. Nothing can actually prepare you for the event when you end up inside the pure instinct(本能), "the diver told Barcroft TV. “Knowing in the whale’s mouth, I tried to control my fear. But I was convinced that it was going to dive down and release me much deeper in the ocean.”

The whale quickly realized he was no sardine! As the whale turned sideways, he opened his mouth slightly to release me, and I was washed out, together with what felt like tons of water, of his mouth, " recalled Rainer. Though the entire incident lasted just 1. 8 seconds, it felt like a year to Rainer.

Still holding his underwater camera in his hand. the diver swam to his boat, where he was quickly rescued by the members of the team. The terrible adventure did not disturb Rainer for too long. After checking to ensure he had no injuries, the diver returned to the water to seek out more

New Lives for Old Phones

When a new mobile phone starts to be sold in stores, many people rush out to buy one. We all want the newest, latest thing. 1..

Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a mobile phone recycling company. “Don’t throw your old phone away. 2. if you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground and it becomes a big problem,” he says.

Mobile phones contain some poisonous materials. If your phone goes to a landfill, these poisonous materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That’s the water we need to drink or water goes into rivers or the ocean. 3. That’s a lot of landfill and a lot of poisonous materials.

“At Total Recall, we separate the old phones into pieces. Most of the materials in the mobile phones can be recycled and used again. 4. For example, phone batteries contain nickel and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries.” explains Mike.

5. You can usually just take it into a mobile phone shop and they wilt send it to us,” says Mike.

So before you throw that old mobile phone away, use it the last time: search for a recycler near you and give them a call.

A. Recycling your old phone is easy.

B. Send it to us and we’ll recycle it.

C. How much is your old mobile phone worth?

D. But what should we do with our old mobile phones?

E. Millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year.

F Recycling materials helps keep the environment greener and cleaner.

G. We take apart the old phones and they are used to make new products.

Endless queues and long waits at the ticket inspection desks at China’s major train stations were signature of the Spring Festival travel rush before this year. Every year, as the country’s biggest national holiday unfolded a huge flow of travelers would leave staff at the check-in desks facing a dilemma.

But with the installment (安装) of artificial intelligence (AI) in dozens of train stations this year, including a facial recognition system which is able to process passenger identification within five seconds and therefore speed up the waiting process, busy scenes started to become something of the past.

When a passenger approaches the camera inside the facial recognition system at the station, it scans his face and then quickly compares it with the photograph shown on his identification card in real time. If the information matches, the barrier gates will open and allow the passenger to go through.

Such use of facial recognition technology is in line with discussions heard at the recent two sessions meeting, a key annual political event, which focused on the widespread application of a security network named Tianwang (“Sky Net” in English) currently being used by China’s public security department.

The network, according to reports by the People Daily, has the potential to recognize the facial features of anyone in the world and match them on the spot with photographs on a database of criminal suspects. In fact, it can analyze photographic identity so quickly that it can scan every single Chinese face on the planet in just one second, and it would only take two seconds to scan every face in the world, with an accuracy rate of up to 99.8 percent.

Those are just two examples that highlight the development of Chinese visual AI technology, which industry insiders predict could contribute to powerful growth in the global technology sector this year.

1.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph?

A. To introduce the following topic of the passage.

B. To describe the Spring Festival.

C. To inform readers of the development of China.

D. To explain the dilemma of the staff.

2.What’s the solution to the Spring Festival travel rush?

A. Using artificial intelligence.

B. Opening more barrier gates.

C. Limiting the number of passengers.

D. Increasing more staff at the check-in desks.

3.What can we know about facial recognition technology?

A. Its application leads to a heated discussion.

B. Its application is useless to policemen.

C. Its operating speed is not yet high enough.

D. Its accuracy rate is very high.

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards Chinese visual AI technology?

A. Depressed. B. Positive.

C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

Both honeybees and ants are social insects that live in groups called colonies. They survive by means of their collective intelligence. Their decision-making power is distributed throughout the group; that is, no one ant or bee makes decisions for the group. Instead, they work together. As Deborah M. Gordon, a biologist of Stanford University, says, “Ants aren’t smart. Ant colonies are.” The same is true for bee colonies. Although bees and ants are quite different physically, they have a lot in common in terms of their behavior. Specifically, honeybees and ants have similar roles within the colony, both have communication systems, and both have the capacity of learning.

Ants communicate by using chemicals called pheromones, which can alert others to danger or to a food source. For example, when worker ants find a promising source, they let the rest of colony know how to find it by leaving a trail of pheromones on the way back to the colony. The other ants pick up the message using their sense of smell. Bees, on the other hand, use movement to communicate with each other. Worker bees send message to each other by means of a “dance”. Different speeds and movements send different messages. For example, when worker bees called scouts go out to find a new hoe for the colony, they return and do a dance for the other worker bees that indicates the location of the new home and how suitable it is. The faster the scouts dance the better the new location is.

Honeybees and ants are both capable of learning. One Chinese study found that bees can be trained to learn and remember a route to a food source. The researchers also found that bees can be taught to recognize hidden objects and use the concepts of “sameness” and “difference” to accomplish certain tasks. Ants take this one step further. Recent America research has shown that ants not only have the ability to learn, but also can teach their foraging skills to other younger ants. They observed that older ants accompany young ants in search of food and teach them the route and how to avoid obstacles.

As we can see, the social behavior of honeybees and ants is quite similar. Both coordinate complex actions and accomplish crucial survival tasks by cooperating in groups consisting of many individuals. Unintelligent as they may be as individuals, as groups they often show amazing brilliance as they go about their everyday activities.

1.What do ants and bees have in common?

A. They make use of collective intelligence.

B. They live in similar-sized colonies.

C. They have small leadership groups that make all decisions.

D. They use the same method to communicate with each other.

2.What docs the speed of a bee’s dance indicate?

A. The distance to a neighboring colony.

B. The quality of a new colony location.

C. The discovery of a new food source.

D. The direction to a potential food source.

3.In paragraph 3, how docs the author demonstrate the idea that Honeybees and ants are both capable of learning?

A. By using statistics. B. By explaining reason.

C. By presenting study findings. D. By stating opinions.

4.What does the underlined part “foraging skills” refer to in the third Paragraph?

A. The skills of communicating. B. The skills of sacking food.

C. The skills of leaning. D. The skills of finding a new home.

This story happened when I was in Saint Lucia with my family. My sister, Diane, who also happens to be my best friend and one of the funniest and kindest people I know, went blind in one eye about 9 years ago. Diana sometimes feels concerned about the way her eve look now. The pupil (瞳孔) is no longer black; it’s sort of “glows” in photos. Diana recently purchased a special contact lens (隐形镜片) that makes her eye look like it did before it changed color, but she doesn’t wear this lens often because it becomes quite painful after about an hour.

One night during our holiday, a hotel photographer was taking pictures of the guests as they entered the area set up for dinner. Diana casually said if she had known there was going to be pictures taken to capture this special memory, she would have worn her contact lens so her eye wouldn’t be so shiny in the picture.

The next day, I was sitting with Diana and her husband Ted. While we were talking, the photographer who had been at the dinner the night before, handed her a photo, leaned in and quietly said, “I matched the color of your eyes in the picture.”

As he walked away, my sister happily said to me and Ted, “Look! He fixed my eye!” The photographer stopped. He turned around and walked back to our table. He put his hand on Diana’s shoulder, leaned in again and gently said, “Just to be clear: I didn’t fix your eye. There isn’t anything wrong with your eye. I simply matched the color.” Her eyes filled up with tears. It was very healing for: her heart to hear these beautiful words. It didn’t take much time but made so much difference. It helped her change the way she feels about herself.

I have always loved the quote: “The world is full of good people. If you can’1 find one, be one!” Your acts of kindness can impact the world in pro found ways!

1.My sister bought a contact lens in order to ________.

A. keep the pupil comfortable

B. show off the beautiful color of her pupil

C. protect her eye from the strong sunlight

D. avoid the pupil being too bright and shiny

2.Diana felt ________ when she knew there was a photo taken for the dinner.

A. excited B. proud

C. regretful D. shocked

3.Tears welled up in Diana s eyes because

A. she was touched by the photographer

B. she felt her eyes were so painful

C. she was hurt by the gesture of the photographer

D. she felt so sad that she didn’t wear her lens

4.What’s the best title of the passage?

A. A Shiny Pupil B. A Considerate Photographer

C. The Act of Kindness Counts D. The Contact Lens Makes a Difference

Any suggestions you could give me about this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Yours,

Alice

The summer job is a tradition among American university students. Long after the end of the school year, students start their summer vacation job search. They send letters to businesses, going to job interviews, and ask our friends and relatives for help. By June the students usually have been found their jobs and then they begin preparing to enter the world of works.

Reasons for wanting a summer job differs from student to student. Some work help pay their school expenses, others work to gain experience in their chosen professions and still others work just for the funny of it. Salesmen or waiters are two of the more common jobs that students try to find during the summer months.

Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic.1.Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won’t be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong.2.Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic (诊断的) tool.

Ozcan’s invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don’t have enough training to correctly interpret what they see.3.With Ozcan’s mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.

4.His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.

By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology---mobile phones---Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effectively almost anywhere.5.

A. As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.

B. People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.

C. This tool has become much more popular all around the world.

D. Another reason that Ozcan’s invention is important is that it is inexpensive.

E. You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.

F. Ozcan’s simple, cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.

G. Even though you may only have a simple infection, you might die because of the delay.

The values of artistic works, according to cultural relativism (相对主义), are simply reflections of local and economic conditions. Such a view, however, fails to explain the ability of some works of art to excite the human mind across cultures and through centuries.

History has witnessed the endless production of Shakespearean plays in every major language of the world. It is never rare to find that Mozart packs Japanese concert hall, as Japanese painter Hiroshige does Paris galleries. Unique works of this kind are different from today’s popular art, even if they began as works of popular art. They have set themselves apart in their timeless appeal and will probably be enjoyed for centuries into the future.

In a 1757 essay, the philosopher David Hume argued that because “the general principles of tastes are uniform (不变的) in human nature,” the value of some works of art might be essentially permanent. He observed that Homer was still admired after 2000 years. Works of this type, he believed, spoke to deep and unvarying features of human nature and could continue to exist over centuries.

Now researchers are applying scientific methods to the study of the universality of art. For example, evolutionary psychology is being used by literary scholars to explain the long-lasting themes and plot devices in fiction. The structures of musical pieces are now open to experimental analysis as never before. Research findings seem to indicate that the creation by a great artist is as permanent an achievement as the discovery by a great scientist.

1.According to the passage, what do we know about cultural relativism?

A. It introduces different cultural values.

B. It relates artistic values to local conditions.

C. It explains the history of artistic works in detail.

D. It excites the human mind throughout the world.

2.In Paragraph 2, the artists are mentioned to show that __________.

A. the charm of great arts is universal and lasting

B. popular arts are hardly different from great arts

C. great artists are skilled at combing various cultures

D. great arts are works of popular arts in the beginning

3.According to Hume, some works of art can exist for centuries because __________.

A. they are results of scientific study

B. they establish general principles of art

C. they are created by the world’s greatest artists

D. they appeal to unchanging features of human nature

4.Which of the following serve as the title of the passage?

A. Are Popular Arts Universal? B. Is Human Nature Uniform?

C. Are Great Arts Permanent? D. Is Cultural Relativism Scientific?

The belief that new technologies are causing the death of work is the idea that never goes away. Despite evidence to the contrary, we still view technological change today as being more rapid and dramatic in its consequences for work than ever before. But this is nothing new. People have always viewed the technological changes that take place during their lives as the most dramatic and dangerous that ever happened in history.

In the 1930s, the British economist(经济学家) John Maynard Keynes predicted the widespread use of electricity would produce a world where people spend most of their time doing nothing. In the United States during the 1960s, the government repeatedly investigates fears that automatic machines would permanently reduce the amount of work available. In 1988, one Australian historian claimed that at least a quarter of the workforce would be without jobs within 10 years because of computers.

Of course, none of these disasters came to pass in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, or anywhere else.

Yet today, we are seeing the return of these predictions, with some experts claiming the world of work is once more undergoing radical(激进的)and unprecedented(前所未有的) change. They argue that robots and other workplace technologies are causing a reduction in the total amount of work available, or are bringing a more rapid pace of substitution of machines for humans than has been seen previously.

But there is a little evidence to support such beliefs. Statistics show that the percentage of people in work, the number of hours they work, and how frequently they change jobs have remained remarkably constant over the past 20 years.

This stability should not come as a surprise. There are good reasons why we should not expect new technologies to cause the death of work. New technologies always cause job losses, but that is only part of the story. What also needs to be understood is how they increase the amount of work available.

One way this happens is through the increases in incomes that accompany the use of new technologies. With the introduction of these technologies, goods and services can be produced faster, which results in higher real incomes for workers. Higher incomes then increase demand for other products and consequently more workers are needed to make them. Additionally, while new technologies are likely to substitute for some types of workers, they will also increase demand for other types of workers, especially those with higher level skills and expertise.

So, the end of work is no closer today than at any time in the past. But there is still a need to keep disproving the prediction, to reduce people’s fears.

1.What is the function of the second paragraph?

A. To explain the importance of developing new technology.

B. To show how technology affected employment in the past.

C. To argue that technological dangers are becoming more serious.

D. To give historical examples of unnecessary fear about new technology.

2.How can employment statistics over the past 20 years best be described?

A. Confusing B. Steady

C. Reliable D. Variable

3.According to paragraph 7, why does demand for products often increase after new technology is introduced?

A. There are more goods for people to choose from.

B. There is more demand for new skills in the economy.

C. Productivity improvements help raise workers’ salaries.

D. Higher quality goods at lower prices encourage consumption.

4.What is the author’s opinion about the introduction of new technology?

A. It does not have an effect on most people’s jobs.

B. Its benefits are usually not worth the introduction.

C. It usually leads to a significant increase in employment.

D. Its danger to people’s employment possibilities is overstated.
