When I was eight, my father bought me the new bike for my birthday. My brother offered to taught me how to ride. At first, he rode and let me watching. Then he explained me the skills of controlling the bike. Still puzzling, I got on the bike, but it didn’t move as expected. I lost my balance and fall off the bike. At once I burst into tear because I saw blood on the ground. While I stood up, my left leg hurt bad. Later, I learned to ride a bike. This experience told me that though some lessons were painful to learn them, yet we could benefit a lot.

Movies have documented America for more than one hundred years. Since Thomas Edison introduced the movie camera in 1893, amateur and professional movie-makers have used moving pictures to tell stories and explain the work of business and government. 1. By preserving these movies, we will save a century of history.

Unfortunately, movies are not made to last. 2. Already the losses are high. Only 20% of US feature films from the 1910s to 1920s survive. Of the American features produced before 1950, about half exist. For independently produced works, we have no way of knowing how much has been lost.

For many libraries and museums, the hardest step in preserving movie collections is getting started. The Movie Preservation Guide is designed for these organizations. 3. These institutions have collections of moving pictures but lack information about how to take care of them. The Guide contains basic facts for “beginners”—professionals trained in history but unschooled in this technical area.

The Guide grew from user workshops at Duke University. At the sessions, beginners talked with technical experts about what they needed to know to preserve and make available their movie collections. 4.

Following the advice, the Guide describes methods for handling and storing moving pictures that are practical for research institutions with limited resources. 5. The Guide has been translated into Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

A. “Keep it simple!” was the advice of the discussions.

B. They’ll be damaged within years if not properly stored.

C. These organizations are the first to save American movies.

D. It is organized in chapters and includes case studies and charts.

E. It introduces movie preservation to nonprofit and public institutions.

F. They show how generations of Americans have lived, worked and dreamed.

G. They store the original movies and new ones under cool-and-dry conditions.

The full moon climbs over the eastern horizon (地平线) and hangs like a huge orange globe in the sky. A few hours later, the moon is overhead but seems to have changed. The huge orange globe has become a small silver disk. What has happened? Why has the orange color disappeared? Why does the moon seem so much smaller and farther away now that it is overhead?

The moon appears orange on the horizon because we view it through the dust of the atmosphere. The overhead moon does not really shrink (缩小) as it moves away from the horizon. Our eyes inform us that the overhead moon is farther away. But in this position the moon is actually closer to our eyes than when it is near the horizon.

The change in size is a trick our eyes and minds play on us. When the moon is low in the sky, we can compare its size with familiar objects. It is easy to see that the moon is much larger than trees or buildings, for example. When the moon is high in the sky, however, it is hard to compare it with objects on earth. Compared to the vastness of the sky, the moon seems small.

There is another reason why the moon seems to shrink. We are used to staring at objects straight ahead of us. When an object is difficult to see, our eyes have to try to focus on it. When we move our heads back to look up, we will try hard again. Looking at something from an unaccustomed position can fool you into believing an object is smaller or farther away than it is. However, scientists do not yet understand completely why the moon seems to shrink as it rises in the sky.

1.What makes us puzzled when the moon is high in the sky?

A. It becomes large.

B. It looks different.

C. Its color disappears.

D. Its shape changes.

2.What really happens when the moon floats farther away from the horizon?

A. It comes nearer.

B. It turns orange.

C. It goes farther.

D. It gets through dust.

3.What does the author intend to suggest by mentioning trees and buildings in Para. 3?

A. They can affect our judgment.

B. They are low on earth.

C. They can attract our attention.

D. They are large objects.

4.What can we infer from the text?

A. The size of the moon often changes.

B. The moon is in fact a huge orange globe.

C. The moon is beginning to shrink much.

D. We do not see the moon as it really is.

“Who made your T-shirt?” A Harvard University student raised that question. Piertra Rivoli, a professor of business, wanted to find the answer. A few weeks later, she bought a T-shirt and began to follow its path form Texas cotton, to Chinese factory and to charity bin (慈善捐赠箱). The result is an interesting new book, The Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy.

Following a T-shirt around the world in a way to make her point more interesting, but it also frees Rivoli from the usual arguments over global trade. She goes wherever the T-shirt goes, and there are surprises around every corner. In China, Rivoli shows why a clothing factory, even with its poor conditions, means a step towards a better care for the people who work there. In the colorful used-clothing markets of Tanzania, she realizes that, “it is only in this final stage of life that the T-shirt will meet a real market,” where the price of a shirt changes by the hour and is different by its size and even color. Rivoli’s book is full of memorable people and scenes, like the noise, the bad air and the “muddy sweet smell of the cotton,” she says. “Here in the factory, Shanghai smells like shallow water Texas.”

Rivoli is at her best when making those sorts of unexpected connections. She even finds one between the free traders and those who are against globalization. The chances opened up by trade are vast, she argues, but free markets need the correcting force of politics to keep them in check. True economic progress needs them both.

1.What do we learn about Professor Rivoli?

A. She used to work on cotton farm.

B. She wrote a book about world trade.

C. She wants to give up her teaching job.

D. She wears a T-shirt wherever she goes.

2.By saying T-shirt “meet a real market”, Rivoli means in Tanzania _______.

A. cheaper T-shirts are needed

B. used T-shirts are hard to sell

C. prices of T-shirts rise and fall frequently

D. prices of T-shirts are usually reasonable

3.What does the word “them” underlined in the last paragraph refer to?

A. Free markets.

B. Price changes.

C. Unexpected connections.

D. Chances opened up by trade.

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A. What T-shirts Can Do to Help Cotton Farms

B. How T-shirts Are Made in Shanghai

C. How T-shirts Are Sold in Tanzania

D. What T-shirts Can Teach Us

Five Ways to Go Green and Save Green

Climate change is in the news. It seems like everyone's “going green.” We're glad you want to take action too. Luckily many of the steps we can take to stop climate change can make our lives better. Let's start now.

Save energy to save money.

Set your thermostat(恒温器)degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.

1. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heat the water.

Unplug (拔掉……的电源插头) electrical equipment when you're not using it.

Save water to save money.

Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too.

Plant drought-tolerant (耐旱的) native plants in your garden. 2.Find out about these plants in your area.

Fix a low-flow showerhead. They don't cost much and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your money.

3.

Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your health and reducing your risk of being fat.

Eat smart.

If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.

4.Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy.

Avoid bottled water.

5.

Use a water filter (过滤器) to make drinking water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive but it causes large amounts of container waste.

A. When speaking of something to eat, try local products whenever you can.

B. Our grandchildren and their children will thank us for living green.

C. Bring a reusable water bottle with you when traveling or at work.

D. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.

E. Less gas = more money and better health!

F. Move a little nearer to your work.

G. Many plants need little watering.

What is eBay? The simple answer is that it is a global trading platform(贸易平台) where nearly anyone can trade practically anything. People can sell and buy all kinds of products and goods, including cars, movies and DVDs, sporting goods, travel tickets, musical instruments, clothes and shoes—the list goes on and on.

The idea came from Peter Omidyar, who was born in Paris and moved to Washington when he was still a child. At high school, he became very interested in computer programming and after graduating from Tufts University in 1988, he worked for the next few years as a computer engineer. In his free time he started eBay as a kind of hobby, at first offering the service free by word of mouth. By 1996 there was so much traffic on the website that he had to upgrade(升级) and he began charging a fee to members. Joined by a friend, Peter Skill, and in 1998 by his capable CEO, Meg Whitman, he has never looked back. EBay has gone from strength to strength. It is now one of the ten most visited online shopping websites on the Internet.

eBay sells connections, not goods, putting buyer and seller into contact with each other. All you have to do is make an e-photo, write a description, fill out a sales form and you are in business: the world is your market place. Of course for each item sold eBay gets a percentage and that is great deal of money. Every day there are more than sixteen million items listed on eBay and eighty percent of the items are sold.

1.We learn from the text that eBay provides people with_______.

A. a place to exhibit their own photos B. a website for them to upgrade

C. a way of buying and selling goods D. a chance to buy things at low prices

2.Why did Peter create eBay after graduating from university?

A. To make money. B. For fun.

C. For gathering the engineers. D. To finish a task of his company.

3.From “he has never looked back” in Paragraph 2, we learn that Peter______.

A. did not feel lonely B. was always hopeful

C. became more and more successful D. did not think about the past

4.How does eBay make money from its website?

A. By bringing callers together. B. By making e-photos.

C. By listing items online D. By charging for each sale

I’m a real book lover. Every time my friends visit me, my nose is buried in a book. Wherever I go, I always have a book with me. Novels, history books, stories about people, journals and news—I read them all and I’ve learnt a lot, too. For example, many things in life happen for the best even if we don’t like or understand them.

Why is reading such an enjoyable pastime for me? I probably first learned about it from my parents. My mother read to me at night in my childhood and bought me picture books. The greatest gift she has given me is a love for reading. And it will be a life-long habit.

No one ever asked me why I liked to read. They just saw me and asked, “Oh? Is that for school work?” And I just shook my head, “No. It’s just for fun.” While reading a good book, I can totally forget myself and fly to another world. It’s like exploring through someone’s eyes, which is just as exciting as watching a movie.

Reading is also necessary in order to learn about writing, to improve my use of words and phrases and broaden my knowledge. What a pity to see our imagination disappear, for we don’t exercise it often. Reading can even be good for one’s health, I think. Everyone should read sad stories that make us cry and also books with humor that make us laugh out loud!

1.Among the gifts my parents have given me, which is the most valuable one?

A. A love for reading. B. Picture books.

C. Good health. D. A lovable pastime.

2.In the fourth paragraph, the author thinks reading can ____.

A. make his parents happy B. finish his school work

C. improve writing and broaden knowledge D. help him understand some movies

3.If we don’t use our imagination often, ____.

A. it is bad for our health B. we will soon learn how to write

C. it will help us to have a good rest D. it will soon disappear

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Why do I have few friends? B. What are my life habits?

C. Why do I love reading? D. Why do things happen for the best?

John Smith, an office worker, lives in Washington. He inherited (继承) a million dollars when he was 23, but he wasn’t happy at all. When his college friends were looking for their jobs, he didn’t have to. Jack decided to living a simple life like everyone else. He gave $l0,000 of his money to a charity (慈善)to help poor children live a better life. Today he is 36. He still wears cheap shoes and clothes and drives a small car only, but he is very happy.
