Welcome to the 2017 UK Festival Awards

The UK Festival Awards & Conference is an opportunity to recognize the hard work, vision and creativity of the nation’s beloved festival industry.

Throughout the day of the event, the Conference invites numerous industry insiders(行家) to discuss the issues most relative to the sector, reviewing its immediate past and portending to the future. The evening’s Awards present a wide range of honors across categories that are decided via a combination of public voting and professional judgments. Since launching in 2004 it has evolved into a major event at The Roundhouse in London, giving the industry a chance to collectively celebrate and fondly reflect upon the achievements of the past year.

With a gourmet dinner, gala awards ceremony and after-show party, it attracts over 1,000 of the most influential people in the business.

Along with its sister events, the UK Festival Conference and the European Festival Awards, The UK Festival Awards & Conference is owned and produced by Festival Awards Ltd, an independent company founded in the UK.

Awards include Best Major, Medium-Sized and Small Festival, Best Family Festival, Best Overseas Festival, Best Use of New Technology, and of course – Best Toilets.

As the festival season is approaching, we thought it’d be a good time to release our free UK Festival Market Report for 2015 / 2016. We gathered the data in our annual census(人口普查)  undertaken in the preparation stage for last year’s UK Festival Awards. The latest UK Festival Market Report can be downloaded below.

Included in the Report is a bunch of related information about festivalgoers: where they’re from, how they like to purchase music, what they eat, their attitudes towards ticket prices, how receptive they are to different forms of advertising, why they go to festivals in the first place, where they sleep, and much more.

We hope you find the information useful.

As soon as a person dies, decomposition(分解) begins. And the first visitors arrive. “Within 5 to 15 minutes of death, flies or other insects begin to colonize the body.” says Rabi Musah, an organic chemist at the University at Albany.

She says different species turn up at different stages of decomposition. “So because of that, depending upon what entomological(昆虫学的) evidence you find, you can learn something about when the person died in terms of the timing of the death.”

Flies don't tend to stick around when disturbed by detectives. But they do leave behind eggs. The eggs are hard to tell apart by appearance alone, so specialists raise them until they hatch, a few weeks later—and they get a species ID and, with a little guesswork, a person's time of death.   But Musah has come up with a more time-saving approach: chemical analysis of the eggs. She and her team investigated that method by first harvesting flies with pig-liver traps hidden throughout New York City. They collected the trapped flies and then chemically analyzed their eggs. And it turns out each species of fly egg has a unique chemical fingerprint—enough to tell the eggs apart without raising the eggs to maturity. The study is in the journal Analytical Chemistry.

Musah and her colleague Jennifer Rosati are now testing the method on a real case. “And once we do that we will be publishing some case studies to illustrate(阐明) that this is a method that can be used, and hopefully eventually it's something that will stand up in court, and something that could speed up detective work—or help deal with a cold case.”

1.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “colonize” in paragraph 1?

A. look for B. fight over

C. carry away D. gather on

2.How can a specialist know a person’s time of death?

A. By researching the habitual nature of flies.

B. By relying on the entomological evidence.

C. By distinguishing the appearance of flies.

D. By discovering a new detective method.

3.What can we infer about Musah’s approach from the last paragraph?

A. Scientists have published studies about it.

B. It is bound to make every cold case solved.

C. It may help accelerate the detection of cases.

D. It will be published in Analytical Chemistry.

4.Where most probably can you see this article?

A. In a science fiction. B. In a newspaper.

C. In a medical paper. D. In a novel.

Chuck was in my high-school English class.1.So, when he told me he had been accepted into the journalism program at the University of Missouri, I wasn’t surprised.

During the first year at college, Chuck stopped by school a few times. We talked about our work together several years before. We had raised money together for twenty-three sick and abandoned babies.2.. It was an activity that in some ways changed our formal relationship into a friendship.

In his second year in college, it was discovered that Chuck had lung cancer and had only a short while to live. So he left school and came home to be near to his loved ones.

About six weeks later, Chuck died.3.The youngest of nine children, Chuck was talented and full of promise. More importantly, he was a good person, a just man.

When I went to his funeral, his father asked to speak with me. He told me that before Chuck’s death, he chose six items to bury with him.4.He told me that Chuck had always kept the piece because he liked the message I had written to him at the bottom of the last page. In that little note, I affirmed his talent as a writer and I encouraged him to be responsible for the gift.

5.His taking my note with him forever offered me a great opportunity for influencing studentslives. I felt inspired with a sense of purpose that was greater than ever: teachers have the power to affect hearts and minds for a long time.

A. It was a great loss for everyone, especially for his family.

B. Chuck helped to raise several thousand dollars.

C. Whenever I forget my purpose, I think of Chuck.

D. He was a writer of great promise.

E. My spirits were lifted up as Chuck was filled with the joy of life.

F. One of them was an essay he had written in my class some years before.

G. I was touched and grateful to Chuck who gave me a special gift that would change my life.

Inside a secured room in a beautiful castle near Paris, a small metal cylinder (圆柱体) rests on a shelf beneath a double set of bell jars. It has lain there for more than a century, its rest only occasionally disturbed when the room’s three key holders perform a coordinated opening ceremony to let technicians enter and clean this precious piece of metal.

First, the cylinder is rubbed with a piece of soft, alcohol-soaked cloth. Then it is steamed with pure water. Finally, the 1kg cylinder is returned, carefully, to its resting place.

Such attention to a lump of metal is unusual, but has a purpose. The castle houses the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and that piece of shining, circular metal is its holiest relic. It is the defining mass (质量)against which all other kilograms are measured. This is the international prototype, or standard, of the kilogram. The IPK, in short.

Dozens of carefully weighted copies of the original have been made. They are stored around the world and used to standardise individual nations’ weights and measures systems.

But the days of the IPK, in its current form, are numbered. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures has decided to replace this single physical specimen with a more fundamental measurement – based on electric current – in order to define the mass of an object. The king of kilograms is about to be dethroned.

“One key reason for doing this work is to provide international security,” says Bureau spokesman Paul Robinson. “If the castle burned down tomorrow and the kilogram was destroyed, we would have no reference left for the world’s metric weights system. There would be chaos. The current definition of the kilogram is the weight of that cylinder in Paris, after all.”

Another major motivation for the replacement of the IPK is the growing need to be able to carry out more and more precise measurements. “Drug companies will soon be wanting to use ingredients that will have to be measured in terms of a few millionths or even billionths of a gram,” says Robinson. “We need to be prepared to weigh substances with that kind of accuracy.”

1.What do we know about the IPK from the first two paragraphs?

A. It’s cared for with great devotion.

B. It’s used in religious ceremonies.

C. It’s beautifully designed and decorated.

D. It’s the most valuable metal in the world.

2.Which of the following best explains “dethroned” underlined in paragraph 5?

A. rebuilt B. removed

C. destroyed D. upgraded

3.What is a reason for replacing the current IPK?

A. To protect the metal cylinder from damage.

B. To make taking measurements more economical.

C. To provide all countries with the same standard.

D. To satisfy the increasing demand for exactness.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. No more kilos

B. A heavy technology

C. The future of the kilo

D. The history of measures

“Anything you want, anytime you need it.”

The message appeared on computer screens across the country at the same time, on the same day: December 12th, at 12 p.m.. Simultaneously, important looking envelopes containing cards with the same message were hand-delivered to the offices of all the major news companies.

One found its way to the desk of Chris Lin, a business reporter at The Post. The card was beautifully designed – a black background with the words printed out in crisp white letters. There was no explanation on the back, just a website address.Chris went to the website. Its style was identical to the card’s and said: “Anytime: Starting Tomorrow.”

The next day websites and blogs were filled with articles theorising about Anytime. Was it a shopping website like Tao Bao or Amazon? A joke? Something illegal? Anytime’s marketing had worked – it was a household name before it’d even made a single sale.

When the opening came, that day at noon, the Anytime website suddenly had a single field that read, “What do you want?” All you had to do was type the words into that box, and then specify how quickly you wanted your item delivered: within one, ten, or twenty-four hours.

Bloggers were the first to test the service. And their reviews were glowing. Within weeks, Anytime had become a part of daily life. Nobody used other delivery sites or the post anymore as Anytime was much cheaper and faster.

Chris still wondered what exactly Anytime was. He tried to find out who owned the company, but it was registered in a small country that did not require such information to be made public. He did find some interesting facts, though. Anyone who challenged the company, it seemed, met with serious trouble. A government official critical of Anytime for avoiding tax was forced to leave his position after news stories suddenly appeared claiming he was dishonest. The head of another company taking Anytime to court died in a car accident just days before the case was to begin.

Chris began making a list of all the people who had something terrible happen to them after opposing or criticising Anytime. By lunch, he had more than one hundred examples. Something was definitely wrong. Chris worked on his list the rest of the day, emailing people who could provide more information and looking through newspaper records. After working through the night, an exhausted Chris finally fell asleep at his desk at 4 a.m..

When he woke a few hours later, there was a message flashing on his computer screen: “Stop making trouble.” Chris smiled. He had no intention of stopping now that he knew he was on the right track.

1.What was on the front of the card sent to Chris Lin?

A. An invitation to a company opening.

B. The website address of a new company.

C. The words “Anytime: Starting tomorrow”.

D. The words “Anything you want, anytime you need it”.

2.Why did the company choose to send the cards to many news reporters?

A. Because it didn’t have enough money for traditional advertising.

B. Because it wanted to attract the reporters as customers.

C. So the reporters would write stories about the new company.

D. So people would find the new company interesting.

3.What did Chris’ s research suggest about Anytime?

A. Itmay be very dangerous.

B. Its popularity would soon decrease.

C. It was doing business all over the world.

D. It was being widely criticised by journalists.

4.How did Chris feel at the end of the story?

A. Scared that he would get into trouble.

B. Confident that he would find the truth.

C. Nervous about what the company would do.

D. Satisfied that he had discovered the company’s secret.

The world’s richest man might seem to have it all, but Bill Gates has one regret. The self-made billionaire said he felt stupid for not knowing any foreign languages.

Speaking in his third Ask Me Anything question-and-answer session for online forum Reddit(红迪网), the Microsoft founder said that he wished he spoke French, Arabic or Chinese.

He said: “I took Latin and Greek in high school and got A’s and I guess it helps my vocabulary. I keep hoping to get time to study one of these—probably French because it is the easiest. I did Duolingo for a while but didn’t keep it up.”

Gates, who is worth $79.3 billion, praised Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for surprising an audience in Beijing when he spoke fluent Chinese. “Mark Zuckerberg amazingly learned Chinese and did a Q&A with Chinese students—unbelievable, isn’t it?” he said

He also admitted that he would pick up a $100 bill if he found it on the street.

As he took the top spot on Forbes(福布斯)28th Annual Billionaires list last year for the fourth time, he said he is pretty basic when it comes to spending on clothes and food, but that he enjoys investing in shoes andracquets(球拍)when he plays tennis.

When asked a life lesson he had to learn the hard way, the billionaire said staying up too late is a habit he is still trying to break. “Don’t stay up too late even if the book is really exciting. You will regret it in the morning. Pam still working on this problem.” he said.

How You Open Your Car Door Matters to Cyclists

The“Dutch reach”isn’t a new dance move or a random YouTube challenge. It’s a simple move that can help prevent harm to cyclists. And you might keep your car door safe in the process, too. 1.

Typically, a person sitting in the driver’s seat of a car opens the door with the hand closest to it.  It makes sense since doors are designed to be opened that way. 2. But if you happen to do that at the wrong time, you may unknowingly create an obstacle for a passing cyclist. The cyclist might be knocked down off the bike. The car door is likely to be damaged by the fast-moving bicycle.

3. However, the car door design and long-time habits have made the process automatically. Luckilythere’s a simple way to solve the problem. Open your car door with your other handusing the Dutch reach. So instead of using your left hand, reach for the door handle with your right. 4. At the very least, you’11 look into your side view mirror to check for any traffic.

The Dutch are used to opening their car doors this way. All Dutch are taught it. It’s part of regular driver education. The technique dates back about 50 or 60 years in the Netherlands. In 2016 an American named Michael Charney started the Dutch Reach Project. He wanted to popularize the practice in the United States. Charney’s efforts may be paying off. 5.

A. Pull the handle and the door is open.

B. This will force you to turn your body.

C. It is easy to do once you are used to it.

D. People are trying to change the way to open the car.

E. All you have to do is change how you open your door.

F. Several states now include the Dutch reach in their drivers’handbooks.

G. Clearly, the solution is for the person exiting the vehicle to check for traffic.

According to new research from the University of Cambridge in England, sheep are able to recognize human faces from photographs.

The farm animals, who are social and have large brains, were previously known to be able to recognize one another, as well as familiar humans. However, their ability to recognize human faces from photos alone is novel.

The recent study, the results of which were published in the journal Royal Society; Open Science, show the woolly creatures could be trained to recognize still images of human faces, including those of former President Barack Obama and actress Emma Watson.

Initially, the sheep were trained to approach certain images by being given food rewards. Later, they were able to recognize the images for which they had been rewarded. The sheep could even recognize images of faces shown at an angle, though their ability to do so declined by about 15 percent—the same rate at which a human’s ability to perform the same task declines,

“Anyone who has spent time working with sheep will know that they are intelligent and individual animals who are able to recognize their handlers.” said Professor Jenny Morton,  who led the Cambridge study. “We’ve shown with our study that sheep have advanced face-recognition abilities, close to those of humans and monkeys.”

Recognizing faces is one of his most important social skills for human beings, and some disorders of the brain, including Huntington’s disease, affect this ability.

“Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys. That means they can be useful models to help us understand disorders of the brain, such as Huntington’s disease that develop over a long time and affect cognitive (认识的) abilities. Our study gives us another way to monitor how these abilities change.” Morton said.

1.According to the new research, what’s unusual about sheep?

A. They have large brains.

B. They can recognize their owners.

C. They can tell animals from humans.

D. They can recognize human faces from photographs.

2.How did the researchers train the sheep?

A. By giving food rewards.

B. By showing photos of famous people.

C. By guiding them to follow their handlers.

D. By showing photos of humans and monkeys by turns.

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Sheep have a higher face-recognition ability than monkeys.

B. The new discovery is of great benefit to the study of cognitive ability changes.

Chinese audiences seemed not to have been satisfied with the third season of the highly anticipated food documentary A Bite of China.

Even though the series has maintained high viewership ratings since its comeback last week, much higher than other programs aired at the same time, the ranking on Douban, a social networking website featuring films, literature and events, slipped to 4.2 out of 10, as of Tuesday, compared with 9.3 and 8.4, respectively, for the first two seasons.

Picky viewers complain that some of the narration is not accurate, while others pinpoint misleading content. At the same time, food blogger @barbara questioned whether it is appropriate to give a close-up shot of the poisonous plant Nandina(南天竺)in a food program.

A Bite of China, which debuted in 2012, became hugely popular nationwide for its quality introduction of some rarely-known and mouth-watering domestic cuisine. In the new show, however, watchers are not satisfied with “irrelevant” food references, such as lipsticks made of Chinese traditional medicine and martial arts master.

The first episode introduced a hand-made iron frying pan from east China’s Shandong province, which prompted thousands of Chinese Internet users to buy one from China’s leading e-commerce website Tmall in the next few days. Sales of the pan at “Zhensanhuan” surged 6,000 times compared with a year ago, according to Beijing Youth Daily.

In response to overwhelming criticism and questions, A Bite of China production crew responded on Weibo that they seek innovation despite the risks following the first two phenomenal seasons.

“It is unavoidable to make comparisons with the first two, and some audiences may not accept the changes,” the crew said. “We explore the culture and civilization behind food, and give food a historic touch. That’s why we feature culinary(烹饪的)tools, feast and rituals, as well as a healthy diet to show Chinese wisdom and philosophy, which has not been shown in any food programs before.”

1.Why does the passage mention Nandina?

A. Because some of the narration is not accurate.

B. Because it may be improper to give a close-up shot of a poisonous plant.

C. Because it is misleading content.

D. Because it is not attractive at all to most picky viewers.

2.Which of the following elements leads to viewers’ dissatisfaction with the new show?

A. some mouth-watering domestic cuisines

B. food-unrelated items

C. some rarely-known cuisines

D. the increasing sales of the pan at “Zhensanhuan”

3.According to its production crew, what is unique to ‘A Bite of China III’?

A. It makes comparisons with the first two episodes.

B. It tells the story of some martial arts related to food.

C. It receives overwhelming criticism and questions from audience.

D. It focuses on cooking tools, rituals and healthy eating.

4.What is the best the title for the passage?

A. 'A Bite of China III' Draws Criticism from Audiences

B. 'A Bite of China III' Maintains High Viewership Ratings

C. 'A Bite of China III' Changes for the Worse

D. 'A Bite of China III' Explains its Purposes

A new study has shown how computers and robots powered by artificial intelligence can read human eye movements to “read” human personalities.

The eyes, they say, are the windows to the soul. And if that is true, computers and robots powered by complex artificial intelligence algorithms(算法) may soon have the ability to peer into your soul. That is the result of a new study on the connection between eye movements and personality, conducted by neuroscience researchers based at the University of South Australia and Published in the scientific Journal Frontiers in Neuroscience.

“Eye movements during an everyday task predict aspects of our personality,” wrote the researchers, led by University of South Australia neuroscientist Tobias Loetscher, whose team follows 42 study subjects around the university campus recording their eye movements, then determines their personality traits(特点) with “well-established questionnaires” for determining personality type, according to a summary of the study published by the site Science Daily.

The researchers fed the data into their Al algorithms and found that computers running the algorithms were able to record human eye movements and immediately determine a person's major personality traits, such as “neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, as well as perceptual(感知的) curiosity”, the scientists wrote.

“The new findings could improve the way human beings interact with their computers and other high-tech devices, even robots, allowing for more natural and realistic social interactions with machines,” Loetscher said.

“People are always looking for improved, personalized services. Today’s robots and computers are not socially aware so they cannot adapt to non-verbal information,” Loetscher said in a statement quoted by Indian Express. This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals.”

The study revealed previously undiscovered relations between specific personality characteristics and specific eye movement tendencies, according to a summary in Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.

1.What do the underlined words “peer into” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Stare at. B. Understand.

C. Search for. D. Concern about.

2.How did the researchers conduct the research?

A. It was carried out in a lab.

B. 42 subjects’ eye movements were recorded.

C. The students’ daily movements were tracked.

D. Its subjects’ personalities were determined by computer.

3.What can we know according to Tobias Loetscher?

A. Robots and computers are socially conscious.

B. People care less about improved, personalized services.

C. Today’s robots and computers can accustom to non-verbal information.

D. The discovery will improve the interaction between human beings and machines.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Human Personality Traits

B. What Human Eye Movements Are

C. Tell Personalities by Eye Movements.

D. How Humans and Machines Can Interact

When was the last time you used plastic plates? Next time, why not try some edible ones? You’ll help the environment and your guests won’t go hungry.

“I used to work in school catering and saw a lot of money being thrown away. I thought that was criminal, so I decided to do something about it,” said Italian school chef Tiziano Vicentini.

Now, Vicentini has an amazing range of edible plates for schools. The plates are made out of bread dough, so you can eat them afterwards. “These dishes cost a few pennies each and are either eaten by the kids, or go into recycling bins for animal food,” explained Vicentini, 50, of Milan.

But now other companies are developing edible plates, too. The Edible Plate Company offers edible plates, bowls, trays and cups. Their products are environmentally-friendly, 100% biodegradable and can be used for all types of catering and home use. And they’re made from a natural plant. After use, they can be fed to animals or left to degrade naturally. They also have a range of cutlery (餐具)made from corn and potato starch (淀粉).

These plates will also help reduce the amount of plastic we create. Waste from plastic causes damage to the environment, costing governments millions in waste management. Plastic bags often end up in landfill sites. And the burning of plastic waste causes toxic gases that pollute the air.

In response to this, governments around the world are introducing tough recycling regulations. And many shops are offering biodegradable plastic bags and eco-safe packaging on their products. To help matters, the International Organization for Standardization (the ISO) has also developed a system to evaluate the biodegradability of products, with a certification and logo scheme. Meanwhile, how about a nice plate for lunch?

1.Which of the following is not the advantage of edible plates?

A. They are expensive. B. They can degrade naturally.

C. They are environmentally-friendly. D. They are made from natural plant.

2.Which of the following statements is true?

A. Tiziano is from Germany.

B. Edible plates are only used for school catering,

C. Corn and potato starch can be used to make cutlery.

D. The Edible Plate Company doesn’t produce edible bowls.

3.What does the underlined word “this” refer to?

A. The air pollution.

B. The edible cutlery.

C. The toxic gases caused by the burning of plastic.

D. The damage to the environment caused by plastic waste.

4.What is the main idea of this passage?

A. The measures to stop the pollution.

B. The ways to reduce the plastic waste.

C. How to make edible plates from natural plants.

D. The plate solution to eating and environmental problem.
