China plans to launch 156 small satellites by 2025 toprovide Internet services in low signal areas and placeswith adverse natural environment, according toChinaAerospace Science and Industry Corporation(CASIC).

Due to environmental conditionsof deserts, mountains and seas, half of the world's population has noaccess to the Internet, and the information deficiencyhamperslocal development.

It will be China's first broadband Internet accesssystem with small satellites hovering in low orbit, whichwill also help meet the needs of commercial space development.

The project, named Hongyun, plans to send the firstsatellite by 2019, and launch four more by 2020. By theend of 2025, CASIC plans to have all of the 156 satellites in operation.

The Hongyun Proiect, which focuses on communication, remote sensing and navigation, can offer communicationand Internet services for China and less-developed 3countries with reduced latency. Meanwhile, the projectcan also benefit emergency communication, sensor data collection and remote control of unmanned equipment.

Currently, international maritime satellites are widely used in communications in mountainous areas and airplanes, but those satellites, 36, 000 kilometers abovethe Earth, have time and signal delay as well as high cost for providing services.

The small satellites sent by the Hongyun Project will hover in low orbits only hundreds of kilometers to 1, 000 kilometers above the Earth, and thus could improve the Internet access. However, the low orbit satellites may face challenges in power supply, as they need more energyto reduce the influence of air-resistance compared to highorbit satellites. Experiments are needed to determinewhether solar energy alone is enough.

1.According to the passage, ________________.

A. 156satellites will be launched by the Hongyun Project by 2020

B. international maritime satellites can cause signaldelay

C. The Hongyun Project may not encourage commercialspace development

D. low orbit satellites are currently used widely incommunications in mountainous areas

2.The underlined word “hampers” in Paragraph2 probably refers to ________.

A. accelerates B. determines

C. prevents D. promotes

3.Which of the following is not included in the HongyunProject?

A. Communication and Navigation. B. Remote sensing.

C. Data collection. D. Solar energy.

4.Low orbit satellites need more energy in order to________.

A. provide more accurate data B. improve the Internet access

C. reduce the effect of air-resistance D. face more challenges

The idea of turning recycled plastic bottlesinto clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businessesand environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with thismethod. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.

Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution andmicrofibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibersfall off. Most washing machines can’t collectthese microfibers. So every time the water getsout of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.

In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that asingle piece of synthetic(合成的) clothing can producemorethan 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used aspecial way toexamine each sample.Hediscovered that every single water samplecontained microfibers.

This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorbother pollutants.

Basedon this evidence, it may seemsurprising that companies and organizations havechosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as anenvironmental“solution.”Even though thescience has been around for a while, Browneexplains that he's had a difficult time gettingcompanies to listen. When he asked well-knownclothing companies to support Benign byDesign—his research project that seeks to getclothes that have a bad effect on humans and theenvironment out of the market, Browne didn’tget a satisfying answer. Only one women’sclothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Brownefunding.

1.What has happened during the past five years?

A. Fabric has become much stronger.

B. Plastic pollution has been less serious.

C. Many plastic bottles have been reused.

D. Microfibers have been greatly improved.

2.What does Browne think of washing syntheticclothes?

A. It is adding microfibers to the clothes.

B. It is worsening environmental problems.

C. It is making synthetic clothes last longer.

D. It is doing great damage to washing machines.

3.What can be inferred about Browne’s Benignby Design research project?

A. It has achieved great success. B. It hasn’t got anything done.

C. It is known to very few people. D. It is facing some difficulties.

4.What’s the best title for the text?

A. It’s important to learn to recycle

B. It’s never easy to solve pollution problems

C. Recycled plastic clothing: solution orpollution?

D. Are human beings moving forward orbackward?

On a flight from Dallas, Texas, to Cincinnati, Ohio, to visit a friend in 2008, event planner Paige Chenault daydreamed about the grand birthday parties she’d throw for her daughter one day. (Paige was five months pregnant at the time.) Then, flipping through a magazine, she saw a photo of an impoverished Haitian boy, skinny. “I thought, this kid has nothing,” Paige says.

The image stayed with her, andshe resolved to do something to help. “I decided I would use my talents to throw birthday parties for homeless kids,” Paige says. For the next four years, Paige and her husband, Colin, took time out from parenthood to visit shelters to determine how best to pull off the parties.

Finally, in January 2012, Paige launched the Birthday Party Project, a nonprofit organization, and recruited friends and family to help decorate Dallas’s 75-occupant Family Gateway Shelter with balloons and streamers, celebrating the birthdays of 11 boys and girls, with 60 more homeless kids in attendance. “That first party was better than I could have ever imagined,” says Paige.

Now Paige and her staff of three paid employees work with regional volunteers to plan monthly themed parties at 15 shelters across the country, some of which house abused or abandoned kids. Each child celebrating a birthday that month gets a$30 gift, a decorative place mat, and an individual cake or cupcake.

One of Paige’s favorite parts of each party is when the kids make a wish and blow out the candles. “They rarely get a chance to dream big,” says Paige.

Her daughter, Lizzie, now seven, often helps out at the parties. Paige says, “The one thing I’ve always wanted is for my kid to be generous.”

1.What was it that made Paige want to help the homeless children?

A. A flight from Dallas to Ohio. B. Her daughter’s birthday.

C. The photo of a Haitian boy. D. Her talent for throwing parties.

2.What does the underlined word “impoverished” mean?

A. adorable B. poor

C. talented D. dead

3.What can be learnt from the passage?

A. A total of 75 full-time workers are employed by Paige at present.

B. After unsuccessful attempts, Paige finally threw a wonderful party for the homeless kids.

C. Kids can spend $30 to celebrate their birthday.

D. Paige commits herself to the cause of helping the homeless kids.

4.What kind of person do you think Paige is?

A. Caring and sensitive. B. Competent and loyal.

C. Kind and perseverant. D. Responsible and disciplined.

Why study history?

People live in the present. They plan for the ______. History, however, is the study of the past. Given all the ______ and pressures that come from living in the present and ______ what is yet to come, why bother with what has been? Given all the available branches of knowledge, why insist - as most ______ systems do - on history? And why urge many students to study even more history than they are ______ to?

Any subject of study needs ______: supporters must explain why it is worth ______. Like most widely accepted ______, history attracts people who simply ______ the information and modes of thought involved. But for people who are less interested in the subject and more ______ about why they should bother with it, a clearer explanation of its purpose is required.

____ do not perform heart transplants, improve highway design, or arrest criminals. In a society that quite correctly expects education to serve ______ purposes, history’s functions can seem more difficult to ______ than those of engineering or medicine. History is in fact very useful, actually ______, but the products of historical study are often less ______ and immediate than those of other subjects.

History helps us understand people, societies and how they ______. For example, how can we ______ past wars (and future threats) without using historical materials? Unfortunately, major aspects of a society’s operation cannot be set up as precise experiments. ______, history must serve, however imperfectly, as our ______, helping us understand who we are and why we do what we do. This, fundamentally, is why we cannot ______ history.

It was the 2015 “super storm” in New South Wales that restored my faith in people.

During a break in the weather, I stupidly decided to drive into town to buy some groceries. However, as I left the supermarket and drove back, the weather took a turn for the worse. 1. Having nowhere to go, I spotted a young man in his front yard assessing the situation. He quickly waved to me to come and park in his driveway.2..

The man, who introduced himself as Trent, then invited me to wait inside his house with his wife, Kayti and their two daughters. I told him I was concerned about the damage to my car, as the continuing rain was starting to turn into hail (冰雹).Trent then grabbed a blanket from his garage and covered my car. 3. Fortunately, his efforts saved my car from being damaged by the hail.

By 11:00 a.m., the electricity and phone services had both gone. 4. Trent made me a cup of tea and Kayti gave me a towel to dry myself off. The three of us chatted while waiting for the weather to get better. I learned that Trent had lost his job and was struggling to feed the family.

When the hail stopped, I shook Trent’s hand and kissed Kayti goodbye. 5. I was very moved by their kindness and it renewed my faith in people.

As I went out the door, I asked Trent for two of his business cards. My father has since called to offer him a job as a clerk at his company.

A. It began pouring so heavily that I was forced to stop.

B. The couple were so modest as I thanked them for their help.

C. I was surprised that he didn’t ask for anything in return for his assistance.

D. I was grateful to escape the running water that was about to drown my car.

E. I tried driving faster to escape the heavy downpour that was sure to come.

F. As a result, I couldn’t contact my parents, despite knowing they’d be worried.

G.    He was wet but he didn’t seem to mind being out in the wild weather on my behalf.

Inside a secured room in a beautiful castle near Paris, a small metal cylinder (圆柱体) rests on a shelf beneath a double set of bell jars. It has lain there for more than a century, its rest only occasionally disturbed when the room’s three key holders perform a coordinated opening ceremony to let technicians enter and clean this precious piece of metal.

First, the cylinder is rubbed with a piece of soft, alcohol-soaked cloth. Then it is steamed with pure water. Finally, the 1kg cylinder is returned, carefully, to its resting place.

Such attention to a lump of metal is unusual, but has a purpose. The castle houses the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and that piece of shining, circular metal is its holiest relic. It is the defining mass (质量)against which all other kilograms are measured. This is the international prototype, or standard, of the kilogram. The IPK, in short.

Dozens of carefully weighted copies of the original have been made. They are stored around the world and used to standardise individual nations’ weights and measures systems.

But the days of the IPK, in its current form, are numbered. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures has decided to replace this single physical specimen with a more fundamental measurement – based on electric current – in order to define the mass of an object. The king of kilograms is about to be dethroned.

“One key reason for doing this work is to provide international security,” says Bureau spokesman Paul Robinson. “If the castle burned down tomorrow and the kilogram was destroyed, we would have no reference left for the world’s metric weights system. There would be chaos. The current definition of the kilogram is the weight of that cylinder in Paris, after all.”

Another major motivation for the replacement of the IPK is the growing need to be able to carry out more and more precise measurements. “Drug companies will soon be wanting to use ingredients that will have to be measured in terms of a few millionths or even billionths of a gram,” says Robinson. “We need to be prepared to weigh substances with that kind of accuracy.”

1.What do we know about the IPK from the first two paragraphs?

A. It’s cared for with great devotion.

B. It’s used in religious ceremonies.

C. It’s beautifully designed and decorated.

D. It’s the most valuable metal in the world.

2.Which of the following best explains “dethroned” underlined in paragraph 5?

A. rebuilt B. removed

C. destroyed D. upgraded

3.What is a reason for replacing the current IPK?

A. To protect the metal cylinder from damage.

B. To make taking measurements more economical.

C. To provide all countries with the same standard.

D. To satisfy the increasing demand for exactness.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. No more kilos

B. A heavy technology

C. The future of the kilo

D. The history of measures

“Anything you want, anytime you need it.”

The message appeared on computer screens across the country at the same time, on the same day: December 12th, at 12 p.m.. Simultaneously, important looking envelopes containing cards with the same message were hand-delivered to the offices of all the major news companies.

One found its way to the desk of Chris Lin, a business reporter at The Post. The card was beautifully designed – a black background with the words printed out in crisp white letters. There was no explanation on the back, just a website address.Chris went to the website. Its style was identical to the card’s and said: “Anytime: Starting Tomorrow.”

The next day websites and blogs were filled with articles theorising about Anytime. Was it a shopping website like Tao Bao or Amazon? A joke? Something illegal? Anytime’s marketing had worked – it was a household name before it’d even made a single sale.

When the opening came, that day at noon, the Anytime website suddenly had a single field that read, “What do you want?” All you had to do was type the words into that box, and then specify how quickly you wanted your item delivered: within one, ten, or twenty-four hours.

Bloggers were the first to test the service. And their reviews were glowing. Within weeks, Anytime had become a part of daily life. Nobody used other delivery sites or the post anymore as Anytime was much cheaper and faster.

Chris still wondered what exactly Anytime was. He tried to find out who owned the company, but it was registered in a small country that did not require such information to be made public. He did find some interesting facts, though. Anyone who challenged the company, it seemed, met with serious trouble. A government official critical of Anytime for avoiding tax was forced to leave his position after news stories suddenly appeared claiming he was dishonest. The head of another company taking Anytime to court died in a car accident just days before the case was to begin.

Chris began making a list of all the people who had something terrible happen to them after opposing or criticising Anytime. By lunch, he had more than one hundred examples. Something was definitely wrong. Chris worked on his list the rest of the day, emailing people who could provide more information and looking through newspaper records. After working through the night, an exhausted Chris finally fell asleep at his desk at 4 a.m..

When he woke a few hours later, there was a message flashing on his computer screen: “Stop making trouble.” Chris smiled. He had no intention of stopping now that he knew he was on the right track.

1.What was on the front of the card sent to Chris Lin?

A. An invitation to a company opening.

B. The website address of a new company.

C. The words “Anytime: Starting tomorrow”.

D. The words “Anything you want, anytime you need it”.

2.Why did the company choose to send the cards to many news reporters?

A. Because it didn’t have enough money for traditional advertising.

B. Because it wanted to attract the reporters as customers.

C. So the reporters would write stories about the new company.

D. So people would find the new company interesting.

3.What did Chris’ s research suggest about Anytime?

A. Itmay be very dangerous.

B. Its popularity would soon decrease.

C. It was doing business all over the world.

D. It was being widely criticised by journalists.

4.How did Chris feel at the end of the story?

A. Scared that he would get into trouble.

B. Confident that he would find the truth.

C. Nervous about what the company would do.

D. Satisfied that he had discovered the company’s secret.

Across the world, studies have consistently found that girls perform significantly better than boys in reading. These studies show that girls typically read more frequently than boys, and have a more positive attitude toward reading.

There are several reasons that help explain these gender-based differences. Parents read more with their daughters. This sends a strong and early message that books are for girls, as well as equipping girls with a significant advantage. Recent research has found even though boys read less frequently than girls, girls still receive more encouragement to read from their parents.

So how can parents and educators help bridge this socially-engineered gap for boys’ reading?

To improve boys’ reading performance, parents and educators may look for ways to connect boys with reading. This has led to discussion about the importance of promoting so-called “boy-friendly” books that boys supposedly “prefer” These are typically assumed to be non-fiction works, as many people believed that boys prefer to read non-fiction.

But this belief is not supported by recent research, which in fact suggests boys are more likely to choose to read fiction than non-fiction. Encouraging all boys to read non-fiction under the mistaken belief that it is their preference may actually be harmful. Fiction readers read more frequently and demonstrate faster language learning and higher language ability.

Besides encouraging more fiction reading, there are a number of ways that we can help connect boys with books. Firstly, don’t assume that boys of the same age have the same interests or that their interests stay the same over time. To match boys with suitable reading material, have regular discussions about reading for pleasure in order to keep up with their interests.

Schools should also provide access to libraries during lessons throughout the years of schooling. Girls visit the library in their free time more than boys, and as students move to higher grades they often have less access to libraries during class. Access to books for boys is essential to promote reading.

In addition, we should keep paper books available because research shows that boys are less likely to choose to read on screens than girls. Finally we should promote reading as an enjoyable pastime by being a role model. Let your children or students see you read for pleasure.

1.According to the author, what is the main cause of the difference in boys’ and girls’ reading ability?

A. Social factors.

B. Teaching methods.

C. Personal preferences.

D. Psychological differences.

2.Why does the author recommend that adults regularly talk to boys about reading?

A. To persuade boys to read more often.

B. To learn what boys are most interested in.

C. To help boys improve their language ability.

D. To show that adults are good reading role models.

3.When should schools give students additional library access according to the author?

A. Before and after class.

B. At any time of the school day.

C. At regular times during class.

D. When they are in the lower grades.

4.What is the main purpose of the text?

A. To show students ways to improve their reading.

B. To explain why boys are not as good at reading as girls.

C. To urge governments to provide more reading resources.

D. To provide strategies that can help improve boys’ reading ability.

Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere, so being prepared for one is important for you and your family. 1. Sure, you can buy ready-made first aid kits (急救箱) in the store, but it is also easy to make your own.

Pick a good container.

You can buy pre-filled first aid kits, and you can also buy empty first aid kit containers. One good option is a large, translucent (半透明的), or flexible plastic container. 2. It should be easy to transport as needed to the emergency, so a handle is ideal.

3.

When your child is crying about injuries on her knee, you don't want your home kit buried on the back of a closet or lost because it's not being returned to the same spot after each use.

Teach your family about the kit.

Make sure everyone in your home who is old enough to understand the function of a first aid kit knows its location and when to fetch it. For younger children, teach them where it is located, so they could show a visitor, relative, babysitter, etc. But place the kit in a location where small children can't access it, such as on a high shelf. 4.

Keep your kit up-to-date.

No one wants to fetch a first aid kit and find the bandage box empty or the pain relievers expired (过期的).   5.

Work with your doctor to determine what medicine should be included. Also include the physician's phone number and any important patient information.

A. Make your kit safely accessible.

B. Treat the kid's knee injuries with the kit.

C. This makes the materials inside visible.

D. Let small children know how to use the kit.

E. Keep track of supply amounts and expiration dates regularly.

F. For older children and adults, instruct them on when and how to use the kit.

G. Therefore, having a first aid kit is an essential part of good emergency preparation.

A global analysis of Earth's threatened and endangered species has changed our scientific understanding about how much climate change is affecting wildlife.

The research, published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change, shows that 47 percent of mammals and 23 percent of birds have been negatively affected by our changing planet. Those figures are shockingly larger than previous assessments, which have shown 7 percent of mammals and 4 percent of birds were affected. Of the 873 mammal species looked at, 414 are hurt by climate change. For threatened birds, 298 of 1,272 species are experiencing negative effects, according to the findings.

However, a new study follows the analysis of threatened wildlife shows that the biggest threat to wildlife is not climate change, which gets a lot of attention, but human activities, including logging (伐木), hunting and farming. Today, three-quarters of Earth's land surface faces “human pressure", according to a global analysis professor Watson carried out in August.

When it comes to the effects of human activities on wildlife, Watson said, most studies look at what might happen to a population in the future, perhaps 50 or 100 years down the line. The problem with such forecasts is that they are absolutely unhelpful for the here and now.

“Nature is extremely resilient (能复原的) if you give it a chance," Watson said. “But the big thing is acting now, not in 20 to 50 years' time. Not make climate change and“human pressure" a future threat, but take action now. Because every day, every minute, which you delay, you lose those opportunities."

1.What has been found about the effects of climate change according to the passage?

A. Human activities are suffering severe disaster due to the climate change.

B. The species affected by climate change are more than people thought.

C. More than half of the mammal species were affected by climate change.

D. Three-quarters of Earth's land surface has been damaged by climate change.

2.What does the underlined “they" refer to?

A. Human activities. B. Negative effects.

C. Assessments. D. Forecasts.

3.What's the attitude of Watson towards the recovery of the environment?

A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic.

C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.

My mother, a nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital, worked at night so that she could come home in time to send me to school. She'd sleep during the day and be ready when we returned home before heading out again in the evening. This went on for 23 years. She never complained (抱怨). No matter how tired she was, she always had enough energy to be my mom.

She often had to work on Christmas, Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, and sometimes Thanksgiving, which made me upset. However, before holidays she always decorated the inside and outside of our house. She'd also have cookies baking in the oven, a holiday-themed movie in the VCR, and music playing throughout our house for us. But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate. “Why do you have to work on this day of all days?" I'd ask sadly. "They need me, too, dear son," she'd respond, compassion (同情) in her tone.

For a long time I didn't understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers. Recently, as my grandmother became ill, I found myself spending more time in hospitals. The scenes I saw in the hospital made me see the different side of my mother. The nurses checked heart, blood and oxygen levels, made sure patients were comfortable. They lifted patients in and out of bed and helped them to the bathroom. Beyond their duties, the nurses displayed consideration for each patient.

What I saw helped me to understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation. I was filled with more admiration for my mother.

1.Why did the author's mother work in the evening?

A. To take him to school. B. To enjoy a movie.

C. To decorate their house. D. To sleep during the day.

2.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A. The mother loved her patients more than her kids.

B. Nurses are paid double salary working on holidays.

C. The author wished his mother could stay home on holidays.

D. Only people with mercy on patients will make good nurses.

3.The author really understood his mother's work when___________.

A. he asked his mother to stay with him during holidays

B. he looked after his sick grandma in hospital

C. he saw how tired his mother was after work

D. he helped patients to the bathroom

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Children of nurses are often dissatisfied with their mothers.

B. Nurses are particularly busy at work during holidays.

C. The author gained a new appreciation of his mother.

D. The author's mother liked doing housework.

How to Have a Birthday Party

Birthdays come and go with each passing year, so how do you have a party that will always be memorable? A little planning and inspiration can get you started.

Pick a suitable theme. 1. Then choose a theme that suits them perfectly. You can go “all out” and make every aspect of the party theme-related, or you can try a lighter touch by including just a little theme-related decoration or food.

Plan ahead. Get your guest list made and your invitations out at least 2 weeks before the party. 2.

Plan your music. Make sure you have a way to play your tunes — whether that be just a set of speakers with a phone or music player, or a whole DJ setup.

3. Make sure you have a range of fast, slow, soft, and quiet songs on hand to fit the mood (情绪) at different times of the event and get your guests feeling celebratory.

Keep guests entertained. Provide lots of opportunities for social mingling (particularly for grown-ups),as well as “free play” for kids. But to really keep the celebration going, games always seem to be the hit of the party! 4.

Depending on your number of guests and their ages, you can even have several games running throughout the event. Balance your levels of activity so that there’s plenty going on throughout the party.

5. With kids’ parties especially, it is almost a certainty that things will not go exactly ording to plan. Be prepared by having extra games and activities, extra goody bags, and a rain plan ready.

A. Plan extra activities.

B. Expect the unexpected!

C. Background music really helps set the atmosphere.

D. Just remember, finger foods are best, particularly for young guests.

E. This way, you’ll know your group size and decide on the best place.

F. Consider the age, gender, interests and hobbies of the guest of honor!

G. There are great websites where you can find activities that tie into a particular theme.

The city-state of Dubai that is home to the world’s tallest building is fast improving its reputation as the city of the future. On May 22, Dubai officials added to their list of futuristic accomplishments with the introduction of the world’s first robot police officer.

Nicknamed Robocop after the 1987 action movie, the 1.7-meter tall humanoid (类人的) robot was introduced at the 4th annual Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference. First introduced in 2011 as REEM by Barcelona-based PAL Robotics, the robot was built to entertain guests at conferences and serve as an information booth at public places. However, the forward-thinking officials of the Dubai police force saw another potential application and partnered with the Spanish company to build a version that would help improve public safety.

Locals and visitors can get help from Lieutenant Robocop which is currently on duty at the Dubai Mall, using the touchscreen on its chest. Armed with technology from Google and IBM’s supercomputer Watson, the “policeman” can provide visitors with directions and other information regarding the mall in one of six languages, including Arabic and English and also accept payment for any fines, like parking tickets. It can also detect criminals with an 80 percent accuracy from 100-feet away and send the information real-time to command center through its camera eyes. While Robocop cannot physically protect people in trouble, an SOS button on its touchscreen can connect them to a human member of the Dubai police force instantly. When not assisting people or seeking out lawbreakers, Robocop brings smiles to people’s faces by posing for selfies or showering them with compliments.

Once the robot officer has been thoroughly tested, the Smart Services Department at Dubai Police plans to “hire” more Robocops to patrol (巡逻) other public areas and also act as receptionists at police stations.

1.Where does Robocop get its name?

A. From a movie. B. At a conference.

C. From a building. D. From Dubai officials.

2.What was the original purpose of Robocop?

A. To be officials’ partner.

B. To help guests in a company.

C. To serve in Dubai police stations.

D. To offer entertainment and information.

3.How can people communicate with Robocop?

A. By touching its screen. B. By paying some money.

C. By asking the mall for permission. D. By getting directions from a policeman.

4.How does Robocop react to lawbreaking?

A. It fines the lawbreakers.

B. It physically protects the victim.

C. It reports the situation to a policeman.

D. It sends an SOS message to the company.

A nice warm cup of tea a day might keep glaucoma (青光眼) at bay, according to new research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

Risk of developing glaucoma — one of the leading causes of blindness around the world that currently affects nearly 58 million people — might be lowered by drinking hot tea daily. The disease causes fluid to build up inside the eye that puts pressure onto the optic nerve (视神经). Previous research said that caffeine (咖啡因) might prevent this build-up but the new findings showed that drinking decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee, iced caffeinated tea and caffeinated sodas had no effect on glaucoma risk.

In the new study, researchers looked at the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the 2005 — 2006 year of 10,000 adults and children. The data is from interviews with the patients, their physical exams and blood tests. That specific year also included eye tests for glaucoma in 1678 adults and showed that about 5% had the disease. Those patients were asked how many caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks they consumed during that year and how often. The results of the questionnaire showed that those who drank hot tea daily were 74% less likely to develop glaucoma than their peers who didn’t.

“Tea has long been recognized to have various chemicals that contribute to lowering the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes,” the researchers said. But further study is needed to determine if things like the size of the cup, type of tea and length of brew (冲泡) time influence the results.

1.What can we learn about glaucoma?

A. It can be cured by drinking hot tea daily.

B. It is a great threat to people’s eyesight.

C. It affects nearly 58 million people yearly.

D. It is caused by too much pressure on the eyes.

2.What did previous research find?

A. Drinking coffee reduces glaucoma risk.

B. Iced tea has no effect on glaucoma risk.

C. Caffeine does good to glaucoma patients.

D. Caffeine causes fluid to build up in the eyes.

3.How was the new study carried out?

A. By interviewing patients.

B. By testing participants’ eyes.

C. By handing out questionnaires.

D. By studying data from previous studies.

4.What does the underlined phrase “those patients” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. The 10,000 adults. B. The 1,678 adults.

C. The 5% adults. D. The 74% adults.
