China's lasting research and development efforts have helped the nation keep its pioneering role in developing 5G mobile communication technology, related standards and the licensing stage

Chinese telecom companies are trying to keep their leading role in the global race for 5G commercialization(商业化).They are speeding up R&D of the fifth-generation mobile communication technology. The 5G technology is said to be at least 10times faster than 4G services which means it will enable superfast downloads of " heavy " files like movies, self-driving cars and virtual(虚拟的)reality games. It will do large-scale experiments of using 5G in 17cities. Yang Jie, chairman of China Telecom, said. "We aim to begin commercial 5G services in 2020."

China Mobile Communications Corp is planning to use 5G with AI and cloud technology for a latest network, which is planned to be used in the year 2020. The company has played an important role in the finish of the first stage of global 5G standards. The company will push forward the cloud deployment(云部署) of the superfast technology and build an intelligent network.

Similarly, China Unicom said it will start 5G testing this year, commercialize 5G in 2019and finally carry out large-scale commercialization in 2020.

China is expected to have 576 million 5G users by 2025, according to a report published by EY earlier this month. With the global united standard set to be finished in the next year or so, China is likely to advance its plan for the commercial use of 5G connections to 2019, to possibly become one of the first 5G-ready markets in the world, EY forecast.

In the past, China was behind other countries in publishing 4G and 3G licenses. But in 5G, perhaps China will race ahead in R&D. China is struggling to take a leadership role in the global landscape. China is also hungry to join in the decision of 5G international standards, making it one of the major players.

About six years ago I was going through a tough time, trying to work two jobs to afford my rent. On a cold Sunday morning, I went to GameStop - a video game retailer(零售商), to cancel the game I'd reserved. A woman in a car parked outside called me when I exited the store. Though it was in broad daylight, I was shy about it and kept some distance when I walked over. She said she couldn't walk and requested me to purchase a Kinect, a popular game, for her as her son's Christmas gift. Because of her leg disease it was painful to her to move around. She called ahead but the employee wasn't willing to help. She gave me about100 in cash and her credit card.

I walked back in and bought the Kinect. Then it occurred to me that this woman, a complete stranger, trusted me. What was it that stopped me from lying about the payment method and just pocket her cashShe couldn't know I wasn't a cheat; and how could she possibly believe in someone so much

I handed her the cash back, explaining I had to pay with her card - it was above 100 at the time, and handed over the game and her credit card. "This is what my son's been longing for. Thank you! By the way, just from glancing at you, I know you are the one who will be a friend to someone in need. You have a face of an angel!" she said. She gave me 10 and refused to take it back. Then she drove away, saying "Merry Christmas!"

She had no idea how much of a difference even 10 made. I was able to buy a few cheap groceries for the week and it really made a hard time in my life a little better. She may think I helped her; however, I truly feel like the one who was being gifted something amazing.

Whatever it means to be a good child, it doesn’t mean being perfect. 1. Maybe one way to think of it is this: good children put themselves on the path towards being happy, successful adults. Any parent would appreciate this type of good children.

Treat others like you want to be treated.

2. , and it really is a valuable rule to love by. For children, acting towards your parents, friends, family and other people with this guide in mind shows thoughtfulness and maturity on your part.

Learn to recognize how other people are feeling.

If you know how other people are feeling and are likely to react, you’ll have a great advantage in deciding how you’d behave in that situation. For instance, if your parents are stressed about how they’re going to pay for the bills for the month, it is probably not the best time to ask for a video game or new shoes. 3. it is probably not the best time to tease him about his lack of athletic skills.

4. .

When someone is hurting, or needs a hand, do what you can to help. The world always needs more sympathetic, helpful people.

As you become more aware of how you can help others, you should also become more aware of all the people that help you. 5. .

A. Know when to ask for help

B. Show concern and sympathy

C. Many people call this the “golden rule”

D. Let them know you appreciate all they do for you

E. Explain how you feel about the conflict by saying something

F. Or, if your brother is upset about not making the baseball team

G. It does involve qualities like understanding, self-discipline, and appreciation, though

It’s time to reevaluate how women handle conflict at work. Being overworked or over-committed at home and on the job will not get you where you want to be in life. It will only slow you down and hinder (阻碍) your career goals.

Did you know women are more likely than men to feel exhausted? nearly twice as many women than men aged 18-44 were reported feeling “very tired” or “exhausted”, according to a recent study.

This may not be surprising given that this is the age range when women have children. It is also the age range when many women are trying to balance careers and home. One reason women may feel exhausted is that they have a hard time saying “no”. Women want to be able to do it all—volunteer for school parties or cook delicious meals—and so their answer to any request is often “Yes, I can.”

Women struggle to say “no” in the workplace for similar reasons, including the desire to be liked by their colleagues. Unfortunately, this inability to say “no” may be hurting women’s health as well as their career.

At the workplace, men use conflict as a way to position themselves, while women often avoid conflict or strive to be the peacemaker, because they don’t want to be viewed as aggressive at work. For example, there is a problem that needs to be addressed immediately, resulting in a dispute over who should be the one to fix it. Men are more likely to face that dispute from the perspective of what benefits them. most, whereas women may approach the same dispute from the perspective of what’s the easiest and quickest way to resolve the problem—even if that means doing the boring work themselves.

This difference in handling conflict could be the deciding factor on who gets promoted to a leadership position and who does not. Leaders have to be able to delegate (知人善任) and manage resources wisely—including staff expertise. Shouldering more of the workload may not earn you that promotion. Instead, it may highlight you inability to delegate effectively.

1.What does the author say is the problem with women?

A. They are often unclear about the career goals to reach.

B. They are usually more committed at home than on the job.

C. They tend to be over-optimistic about how far they could go.

D. They tend to push themselves beyond the limits of their ability.

2.Why do working women of child-bearing age tend to feel exhausted?

A. They struggle to satisfy the demands of both work and home.

B. They are too devoted to work and unable to relax as a result.

C. They do their best to cooperate with their workmates.

D. They have to take up too many responsibilities.

3.Men and women differ in their approach to resolving workplace conflicts in that ________.

A. women tend to be easily satisfied

B. men are generally more persuasive

C. men tend to put their personal interests first

D. women are much more ready to do the boring work

4.What is important to a good leader?

A. An aggressive personal.    B. The ability to delegate.

C. The courage to admit failure.    D. A strong sense of responsibility.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.

As was expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, “Er... What... What do you really want to do in the gorgeous future?”

I was silent for a moment playing with the cell phone. I kept thinking, “Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?” later I replied, “Well, I want to be a writer.”

I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But surprisingly, “Interesting idea!” he answered. I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation.

“Are you serious, dad?”

“Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it’s late. Let’s take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs (螃蟹) for dinner, and we can talk more.”

Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off along the coast. We didn’t talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.

There were no big waves and blinding sunlight at that time. “Let’s see if we get lucky,” he said, picked up a web basket with a rope tied and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, then my father stood up and said, “Give me a hand with this,” and we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck.

To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting () down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape. Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there are still some crabs trying to escape again and again.

Do you want to create more successful writings? Perhaps you can benefit from the following suggestions on excellent writing.

You need time. A lot of smart people lie to themselves like, “I finish my task best at the last minute.” In fact, it’s not true. 1. Sure, you are smart, but you still need to have some pressure. For example, if you are working on an important topic, why do you think that you can write well at midnight just before the conference? Writing can be a miracle if you are given enough time.

Writing requires practice. 2. Would you do nothing before running a marathon? No, you would practice running gradually to make your body stronger. In order to become a writer, you need to write.

Write at the best time. I happen to be a morning person, so I write early in the day. Then I spend the rest of my day teaching or having meetings. 3.

4. Or, at least, they are not correct to some extent. Nearly all of the best scholars are changed by their experiences in doing research and writing about it. They learn by doing, and sometimes what they learn is that they were wrong.

Revise your writing again and again. Have other people look at it. You need to overcome a fear of refusal. 5. The difference between a successful scholar and a failed one is about who is better at writing and revising.

A. Not all of your thoughts are influential.

B. No one works better with time running out.

C. You get better and faster through exercise.

D. Exchange papers with peers or an instructor.

E. Your first thoughts are often wrong.

F. Make sure you save your most productive time for writing.

G. Nobody’s first drafts (草稿) are good.

The government says spending £4.2 million on planting trees in towns and cities will improve the quality of people’s lives. But do trees really make people happy?

Some British and US surveys suggest a thick green lawn, or well-landscaped yard can increase the government property prices by as much as 15%. But the government’s Big Tree Plant campaign, which aims to plant one million trees in English urban areas over the next four years, says trees are not only good for our bank balance, but they do wonders for our happiness. And it says getting people to plant makes communities even happier. So do people really care about trees and do they improve lives? Margaret Lipscombe, director of urban programs at the Tree Council, says, “Not only are trees beautiful but they are practical. Trees also encourage healthier lifestyles and studies have shown people are calmer when trees are in their community,” A US study suggests that patients who have a view of nature through hospital windows recover better after operations.

Ms. Lipscombe says that the trees have also been known to slow down the traffic because drivers will go more slowly when there is something in their sights. She admits some people have negative feelings about trees because they worry about slipping on berries, bird droppings on cars or blocked light.

Ms. Lipscombe also says when she first moved into the area, there were no trees on her street. “I t was an area where there were lots of factories with high walls. It looked like an abandoned place that you didn’t want, especially as a woman on your own. Now everything is different. With lots of trees around, the street looks more attractive. People are not as frightened and no longer run down the road to get home. The trees also bring people out onto the street and make a stronger community feel.”

1.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. The use of trees in medical treatment

B. The benefits of trees to people’s lives

C. The role of trees in cutting down government expense

D. How to make the best of trees

2.What can be inferred from Ms. Lipscombe’s words in the last paragraph?

A. Trees may offer people a sense of safety.

B. Trees may help people forget sad memories.

C. Factories should be built where people live.

D. Women shouldn’t go out alone at night.

3.Where does this passage most probably come from?

A. A news report

B. A scientific report

C. A health magazine

D. A textbook

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience. Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.

A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.

Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems. Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological (神经的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.

Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.

Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的) system.

1.How does music affect preterm babies?

A. It helps reduce their pain.

B. It helps develop their potential in music.

C. It helps improve their hearing systems.

D. It helps repair their neurological systems.

2.What does the underlined phrase “stave off” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Lead to

B. Increase

C. Prevent

D. Break into

3.Why can music mend a broken heart?

A. It has a positive effect on human body systems’ work.

B. It can help people prevent diseases caused by anxiety.

C. It helps make a person feel optimistic about life.

D. It can help patients recover in a slow way.

4.What may be the best title for the text?

A. Who can benefit from music

B. The best time to listen to music

C. The way to choose quality music

D. How music affects our mind and body

In 2010 I left the United States for the first time to fly over 9,000 miles to Uganda, a country in recovery from civil war. I was going there to help the local kids learn soccer.

As I played soccer with some kids, the sun burned my skin. I took many breaks to drink from my water bottle before realizing I was the only one who did that. All the energetic children running around never stopped to get water. After looking around, I realized there was NOWHERE for them to get water, and there was no well or water pump in sight.

I asked a man who was traveling with us why the kids didn’t ever stop to drink water. He told me that they would have to walk all the way to the pump in the next village and they didn’t want to miss out on playing soccer with a real ball. The kids seemed happy but it was not fair that to get a drink of water meant they would miss out on such a rare occurrence of playing with an actual soccer ball.

When I got home, I spoke with other people about kids in Uganda. They told me to do something to help them. That sounded like a great idea, but how? I spoke with my friends about helping kids in Uganda. We decided that we could try to solve their most urgent problem—water. And we decided to organize soccer camps to collect money.

It has been three years since our first camp and we have successfully run two more and funded two water filtration (净化) systems as well as 60 water pumps for farmers. We have been able to improve the health of thousands of Ugandans.

1.The kids didn’t drink water while playing soccer, because ______.

A. they didn’t feel thirsty at all

B. they couldn’t get any nearby

C. they were too poor to afford bottled water

D. they were not allowed to drink water during the play

2.How did the author most probably respond after hearing that man’s explanation?

A. She was unwilling to stay there anymore.

B. She decided to buy water for the kids at once.

C. She felt very proud of her own life.

D. She felt very sad for the kids.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. We should fully enjoy what we have.

B. We can make a difference to others’ life.

C. We should be grateful for what we receive.

D. We can change our lives through hard work.

Collector’s Corner

People collect a wide variety of things, from the obvious ones like stamps or coins, to the less common ones, such as beer bottles. Some collector’s spend hours looking through junk shops and build a collection for a few pence per object, while other collectors might spend thousands of pounds on antiques, fine china or rare paintings.

Some people collect for money, but most people do it for fun. Collecting is basically illogical. If you simply want to listen to Elvis Presley’s first record, you can get a copy at most record shops. A collector, however, will want to own an original 1955 disc, and will be willing to pay for it.

What makes an item valuable? Rarity(罕见) and conditions are the most important factors. A coin or stamp which is worth hundreds in perfect condition might be worth only pence in average or poor conditions.

What should you collect? Most collectors begin acquiring things which interest them, and as the collection grows, knowledge of the subject grows. If you want your collection to grow in value, it is probably best to avoid things which are sold especially for collectors. Nearly everybody who buys a set of new coins or stamps will keep them in perfect condition, so that the new coins or stamps will never become rare. The most valuable items are often things which were widely available, but which were usually thrown away after use, such as Coca-Cola bottles or toy cars. An interesting collection can be started very cheaply.

Does Failure Really Exist?

If you believe you have failed, then you have. If you believe you don’t have the ability to succeed, then you don’t. 1. The moment you decide to give up or stop working toward your goals, failure is born.

2.

Most people give themselves an out without even realizing it. They are willing to work hard on reaching their goals, but only until the things get too rough or their energy dies down. Don’t do that! Instead, make up your mind to make your goal happen, no matter what!

3.

It’s a good idea to set a general timeline, but remember that something will be beyond your control. You can never say exactly when your goal will be reached. If you lock yourself into a given timeline, you might make yourself feel like a failure! Instead, get a general idea of when you’d like your goal to be completed. Then take it one day at a time and focus on making progress instead of reaching the finish line in as little time as possible.

4.

Difficulties mean only one thing: it’s not time for your goal to be completed yet. That’s it! It doesn’t mean you failed; it doesn’t mean you’re weak; it doesn’t mean you’ll never achieve your goals. It simply means you have not done enough yet. You’ve got to keep moving forward and find a way over, around, or through the difficulties.

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.

Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.

Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”

The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study “You don't actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn't actually do too much.”
