There are about 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs(瓢虫)in the world. They are also known as lady beetles or ladybird beetles. They come in many different colors and patterns, but the best-known in North America is the seven-spotted ladybug, with its shiny, red-and-black body. In many cultures, ladybugs are thought to be good luck. Most people like them because they are pretty, lovely and do no harm to human beings. But farmers love them because they eat aphids and other plant-eating pests. One ladybug can eat up 5,000 insects in its lifetime! Most ladybugs have dome-shaped bodies with six short legs. Depending on the kind, they can have spots, stripes, or nothing at all. Seven-spotted ladybugs are red or orange with three spots on each side and one in the middle. They have a black head. Ladybugs are colorful for a reason. They tell the enemy: “Eat something else! I taste terrible.” When threatened, they may play dead. Birds are ladybugs’ main predators(天敌), but they are also eaten by frogs, spiders, and dragonflies. Ladybugs are happy in many different places, including grasslands, forests, cities, suburbs, and along rivers. Seven-spotted ladybugs are native to Europe but were brought to North America in the mid-1900s. Ladybugs are most active from spring until fall. When the weather turns cold, they look for a warm place to hibernate, such as in rotting logs, under rocks, or even inside houses. These hibernating places can have thousands of ladybugs. The name “ladybug” was given by European farmers who prayed to the Virgin Mary when pests began eating their crops. After ladybugs came and wiped out the invading insects, the farmers named them “beetle of Our Lady”. This later was shortened to “lady beetle” and “ladybug”. 1.The underlined word “aphid” in Paragraph 2 is probably a kind of_______. A. ladybugs can live along rivers B. seven-spotted ladybugs were brought to Europe from North America C. ladybugs are very active in autumn D. the name “ladybug” came from “beetle of Our Lady” 4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school? Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra (额外的) pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time! ______—Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old! 1.While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should _____. A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well 2.When we provide help for our friends, we should _____. A. try to do everything for them B. put them before ourselves C. change their bad habits first D. ignore their faults 3.What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words? A. Life without a friend is death. B. A friend is easier lost than found. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A man is known by his friends. 4.Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph? A. Make plans. B. Enjoy yourself. C. Understand your friends. D. Play with your friends.

When it comes to bringing up children, everybody agrees that it is not an easy task. Every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition (学会) of each new skill — the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting (吸引人的) to hurry the child beyond his natural learning speed, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to learn something too early. A young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning chances, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself. Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are strict with the time of coming home at night or being on time for meals. In general, the controls show the needs of the parents and values (价值观) of society as much as the children’s own happiness. When it comes to the development of moral standards (道德标准) in the growing child, consistency (前后一致性) is very important in parental teaching. To say “No” to a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent cheated. A sudden realization of a big difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment. 1.Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ___________. A. is common among parents B. should be avoided C. sets up dangerous states of worry in the child D. will make him lose interest in learning new things 2.In the process of children’s learning new skills parents _____________. A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read B. should neither push them too hard nor leave them alone too much C. should not expect too much of them D. should create as many learning opportunities as possible 3.The underlined word “precept” in Paragraph 3 probably means __________. A. idea B. instruction C. behavior D. punishment 4.In moral matters, parents should _______________. A. consistently make sure of the security of their children B. realize the big difference between adults and children C. say “No” to the things that have no foundation in morality D. obey the rules themselves

Over the years, Brian Wansink, director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, has studied such things as how far Americans typically drive to buy food, how many times we refill our plates at all-you-can-eat buffets and how we organize our kitchens. In the mid-2000s he famously coined the phrase “mindless eating”(and wrote a book by that name) to focus attention on all the bad dietary decisions we make without really thinking about them. His new book, Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life, aims to change the design of restaurants, school lunchrooms, office cafeterias and homes so that the mindless choices we make will be more healthful ones. Some examples: Keep kitchen counters clear. No visible snack food, no bread, no nuts — not even breakfast cereal. In Wansink’s research, “women who had even one box of breakfast cereal that was visible — anywhere in their kitchen — weighed 21 pounds more than their neighbor who didn’t.” Trick yourself into drinking less wine. “We tend to focus on the height of what we pour and not the width, so we pour 12 percent less wine into taller wineglasses than we pour into wider wineglasses.” And the shape of the glass is not the only variable that affects how much we drink. Wansink writes: “Because red wine is easier to see than white wine, we pour 9 percent less red wine whenever we pour a glass.” Wansink said his researchers also found that people ate less at restaurants when sat in well-lighted areas near windows and doors, than in darker areas or in the back. They ate less if they were offered a doggie bag, or to-go box, before they got their meals: apparently the idea of getting a “free” second meal outweighed the impulse (冲动) to clean their plates. Workers who frequently ate at their desks weighed 15.4 pounds less, on average, than those who didn’t. Fruits and vegetables kept on the top shelf of the refrigerator were eaten at higher rates than those on lower shelves. The point, Wansink says, is to consider findings like those and change your environment or habits. Then you won’t have to think about it: You’ll just eat less. 1.Why did Brian Wansink write Slim by Design: Mindless eating Solutions for Everyday Life? A. Because he wanted people to become thin. B. Because he wished to change the design of dining places. C. Because he hoped to coin a new phrase “mindless eating”. D. Because he intended to help people make more healthful dietary decision. 2.According to Wansink, which of the following affects the amount of wine we drink ____. A. the shape of wineglasses B. the color of wineglasses C. the taste of wine D. the quality of wine 3.The underlined phrase a “doggie bag” in paragraph 5 probably means ____. A. a bag for carrying dogs B. a box for takeaway food C. a container for leftovers D. a bag for carrying dog food 4.What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Changing environment or habits of eating will help you eat less. B. Eating fruits and vegetables is better for your health. C. Keeping your kitchen counter clear of any food will help make you thin. D. Many people eat or drink too much without paying attention to it.
Charlie is a teacher and his wife, Maria is an artist. The night before last, just before the longest day of the year, Charlie was sitting in a deckchair enjoying the warm summer air when Maria touched his shoulder and he could tell immediately she was a little worried about something. He asked her what the matter was and she replied that there was a strange thing on the jacket that was hanging in the bedroom. They had both lived in the West Indies (西印度群岛) and had seen a lot of strange creatures in their house before. But now they were living in England and so Charlie just laughed and said he would have a look at the “thing”. He walked to the bedroom. He saw a jacket hanging in the bedroom and went up to it to have a closer look at the “thing”. The moment he touched it, the thing sprang into life. Now Charlie experiences fear like the rest of us but when this creature opened its wings, he jumped out of his skin and ran screaming from the room like a small child doing about 100 miles an hour. For a moment the next-door neighbours thought that Charlie was murdering his wife because of the noise they could hear. In fact, it was a bat that frightened Charlie. Eventually Charlie managed to trap the bat in a box and took it to the garden to let the bat fly. Maria, who had been playing the guitar while Charlie was upstairs, asked Charlie if he had found out what the thing was. “Oh, nothing to worry about”, he said casually hoping that the terror could not be seen in his eyes, “it was just a bat.” 1.Why was Maria a little worried one night?
