Guam is a beautiful, small island in the Pacific Ocean. You’ll find happy songbirds, clear blue water, and leafy forest there. But the small island has a big problem: snakes. There are about 2 million brown tree snakes living in Guam.

The snakes likely arrived in the 1940s. They probably slipped(滑行) unseen onto ships and planes heading to Guam. Once there, the snakes laid eggs. Snake families grew. The snakes have no natural enemies to eat them on Guam. Soon, the island was covered with these snakes.

The brown tree snake has had a devastating effect. The snakes eat birds. There used to be 12 kinds of birds on the island. But these snakes have killed off nine kinds of the birds. The snakes can grow to be 10 feet long. They often bite humans. They climb onto power lines and make the electricity go out. This causes millions of dollars in damage.

Scientists have tried many different ways to control the number of snakes. They have used snake traps and snake-sniffing dogs. Nothing seemed to work. Nothing, that is, until they found a surprising secret weapon: killer mice.

Scientists found out that there is one easy way to kill brown tree snakes. They could give them a medicine called Tylenol. People take Tylenol for headaches and other pains. Even a little bit of Tylenol can kill a brown tree snake.

But how would scientists get the tree snakes to eat Tylenol? They came up with a plan. First, the experts put the medicine into dead mice. Then they attached each mouse to a mini paper parachute(降落伞). Planes dropped the mice over Guam. The parachutes got caught in the trees. The mice became dinner for the snakes that live there.

Has it worked? So far, research shows that there are fewer snakes because of the mice. The worry is that it may be too late to clear the snakes, but Mr. Vice from Guam’s Department of Agriculture says this should not stop the islanders from trying. “Our long-term goal is to kill the snake off completely,” he says.

1.What can we learn about the brown tree snakes?

A. They were shipped to Guam on purpose.

Have you ever imagined taking the SAT or ACT in middle school? Duke TIP(Talent identification Program) gives younger students an opportunity to take these standardized tests, which are used for college admissions(录取).

Since 1979, Duke University has supported Duke TIP, an organization that encourages academic(学业的) achievement. In addition to organizing the exams for excellent students, the program also offers summer enrichment programs, online courses, and need-based help, among other resources.

On May 22, Duke TIP held its Grand Recognition Ceremony at the university in Durham, North Carolina. The event celebrated the achievements of this year’s seventh graders who scored in the highest 4 percent.

Can you imagine being able to remember every single experience of your life and every word in your favorite book? That’s what Becky’s life is like, and as wonderful as it sounds, it can also be quite terrifying at times.

Three years ago, Becky was reading a newspaper article which mentioned that it was impossible for people to remember the details of their life in the first three years. “What nonsense (胡说八道)!” she thought, because she could clearly remember her life all the way back to when she was just 12 days old. Her parents had carried her to the driver’s seat of their car and laid her down for a photo. But it wasn’t nonsense. She was just one of only 80 known people who have a condition called HSAM(Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory).

Becky’s unusual condition was recently shown on a program called 60 minutes, where reporter Allison tested her ability by asking her questions about her favorite book series, Harry Potter. Allison would pick up a book and open a page and read her a line. Immediately Becky would name the book, chapter number, chapter name and could recite every word until Allison told her to stop.

Being able to remember every little detail is a great ability, but as every person with HSAM will tell you, it can be very hard to deal with. Forgetting is one of the things we use to get over sad experiences in our lives, but it’s something that people like Becky are unable to do. Even walking on the street and lightly bumping() into somebody brings back memories from Becky’s childhood, when a boy knocked her over. She’s taken right back to that time, living the experience all over again. Also, like Becky, people with HSAM never do well in school, because they have problems filtering(过滤) through all the information, remembering only the important bits.

Becky’s special brain could help scientists find a way to treat people with terrible illnesses like Alzheimer’s. Her condition could hold the secret to treating or even preventing Alzheimer’s.

1.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A. What people with HSAM feel like.

B. Why HSAM is unfamiliar to people.

C. How Becky knew she was different.

D. How Becky spent her early childhood.

2.Why was Becky asked questions on 60 minutes?

A. To help treat her illness.

B. To advertise Harry Potter.

C. To test her ability to remember.

D. To encourage other kids to read.

3.Which of the following troubles Becky?

A. She can’t forget her painful experience.

B. She feels tired remembering everything.

C. She can’t get along well with other kids.

D. She is different from other kids of her age.

4.Why does Becky do poorly at school?

A. She feels sad every time she studies.

B. She remembers too much information.

C. She can’t deal with difficult problems.

D. She can’t understand the teacher in class.

Some of the world’s finest

Stained glass(彩色玻璃) artwork

Sainte Chappelle, France

While many say that Paris’ must-see cathedral(教堂) is Notre Dame de Paris, Sainte Chapelle should also be high up on the list. Louis IX ordered it to be built in 1239 to house the Crown of Thorns, a famous relic from Constantinople. Within the ceilings of the church are fifteen of the world’s finest stained glass windows. Unfortunately, as a result of the French Revolution, one third of the stained glass had to be replaced.

The Chicago Cultural Center, USA

While the Windy City might not house the nation’s winningest sports teams, it does have one of the world’s most eye-catching displays of stained galss. Today’s Chicago Cultural Center, which was designed as a library in 1887, has a 38-feet-tall Tiffany glass dome(圆屋顶), which is said to be the largest Tiffany dome in the world.

Erawan Museum, Thailand

The Erawan Museum, built in 1994, houses ancient, priceless Thai artworks, all of which are displayed within the building’s three floors, said to symbolize the three levels of the universe. The shiny stained glass is on the second floor, which museum owner Khun Lek Viriyapant considers to be the human level. Designed by German artist Jacob Schwarzkopf, the stained glass artwork shows five continents, with the sun delivering light, and therefore life, into all.

Saint Vitus Cathedral, Czech Republic

While the Czech church whose doors many travelers pass through every day was built way back in 1344, its amazing display of stained glass is a 20th-century donation from well-known Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. The artwork is nothing if not fitting for Prague, the city in which the stained glass is displayed. After all, it is the modern-day Czech Republic from which dreamy Bohemians came.

1.Which of the following has the longest history?

A. Sainte Chapelle.

B. Erawan Museum.

C. Saint Vitus Cathedral.

D. The Chicago Cultural Center.

2.Where should you go if you want to see the Earth-themed stained glass?

A. France.

B. The USA.

C. Thailand.

D. Czech Republic.

3.What is special about the stained glass in Prague?

A. It fits the city well.

B. It is from a Bohemian.

C. It is the largest of its kind.

D. It sits in an ancient church.

It was the creation of Germany’s Ferdinand von Richthofen, who traveled to China several times in the second half of the 19th Century.

China’s powerful Han Dynasty began expanding its trade routes towards the West in the years around 100 B.C. 2. Some shipments made it through to Europe and to northern and eastern Africa, through the port of Alexandria.

Craft (手工艺)is becoming a heritage industry — but a record of disappearing skills might just come in handy in the future.

Mr. Lobb (of John Lobb the bootmaker) mentioned that custom clothing and shoe-making were once the norm for everyone. How come, then, today a pair of normal Lobbs would set you back over £2,000? The price has obviously gone up because of lack of competition and higher wages, but would custom clothing once again be affordable to all if the demand was there? Do we just wave goodbye to these skills,or should we fight to maintain them?

The disposable (一次性的)culture we “enjoy” today has existed in our life for almost two generations now. We like our products to be made by either a robot or invisible, cheap hands so that we can accumulate them cheaply and frequently. The concept of “craft” is something that’s now largely considered to be strange, and seems to be limited to museums and dusty, independent shops. Hobby crafts such as knitting do undergo revivals (复兴)from time to time, but I think that’s because they are seen as short-lived fashionable leisure pursuits rather than a craft worthy of revivals on a commercially feasible (可行的)scale.

To drive a revival in any of these crafts, you would probably need to apply the same marketing techniques that are used to sell any other items today. The consumer must believe that they just have to have it. If they don't have it now, it will either go up in price or go out of fashion --- both reasons enough in themselves for a shopper to act.

But does it finally matter if these skills will no longer serve any practicable use in the decades to come? I don’t know the answer to that, but I have long thought it would be a good idea if we “banked” these skills somehow, just as we are not attempting to do with seeds. You just never know whether we’ll need them in the future. Maybe it’s time to establish a worldwide network of volunteers to record, through the written words and videos,as many of these dying skills as possible. Actually, a rough look on YouTube fills me with hope that an army of willing volunteers is probably out there already and just needs someone or something to gather them together.

1.According to the text, the custom clothing is dying in that_

A. it serves no useful purpose

B. it doesn’t meet people’s demand any more

C. it is too costly for most people to afford

D. it has long been lack of competition all along

A. It is a sign of disposable culture.

B. It indicates the direction of fashion.

C. It can’t help revive the traditional crafts.

D. It creates no commercial value in the long run.

3.Which of the following measures may take effect in reviving crafts?

A. Making them as affordable as possible for the foreigners.

B. Adopting modem marketing strategies used to sell other items.

C. Establishing a network of volunteers to sell them worldwide.

D. Drawing people’s attention to the videos of these crafts.

4.From the last paragraph,we know the author_.

A. shows great interest in craft

B. doesn’t want craft to disappear

C. feels sad about the disappearance of craft

D. tries to explain the reason for craft’s disappearance

Fireworks are exciting, but also hard to control. The Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang, though, has developed a way to harness the visual and physical power of fireworks to make art He recently used them to create a burning sculpture that stretched high into the sky. Guoqiang fittingly named the work Sky Ladder.

Guoqiang built Sky Ladder by making a frame out of metal. He coated the frame with gunpowder, the main chemical material in fireworks.

The artist tried one end of the frame to the ground and attached a large weather balloon to the other end. The balloon was filled with helium a gas that is lighter than air. When released, the balloon floated upward, pulling the top of the ladder 500 meters into the sky. That’s higher than the top of the Empire State Building.

Guoqiang set fire to the bottom of the ladder, and the crackling(啪啪作响) flames raced skyward up the frame. The sculpture burned for two-and-a-half minutes before its flames began to die out from the bottom up.

Dealing with explosive (炸药)is challenging, and conditions had to be perfect for Guoqiang to achieve his desired effect. He first attempted Sky Ladder in 1994,but bad weather prevented him from successfully completing the work. Guoqiang put Sky Ladder aside so that he could work on other projects, perhaps most famously the fireworks display that opened the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Finally, after two more failed attempts,Guoqiang successfully sent his flaming ladder skyward last year. He presented Sky Ladder in his hometown, a quiet fishing village near Huiyu Island, Quanzhou. He offered the work as a gift to his 100-year-old grandmother, other family members, his friends and his town.

“Behind Sky Ladder lies a clear childhood dream of mine,"Guoqiang explains. “Despite all life’s twists and turns, I have always been determined to realize it. The ladder rose toward the morning sun, carrying hope. For me, this not only means a return, but also the start of a new journey."

1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “harness” in Paragraph 1 ?

A. control and use    B. find and collect

C. save and develop    D. count and produce.

D. It was sent skyward in the evening.

3.When did Cai Guoqiang first imagine a ladder of fire?

A. When he was a young boy.

B. When he saw the Empire State Building.

C. When the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games opened.

D. When his grandmother had her 100th birthday. ,

4.What may be the best title for the text?

A. Living with hope    B. A birthday gift

C. Burning man    D. Art on fire

It is not as simple as opening the door and hitting the track in winter. There are a few things you can do to ensure you are getting the most out of your run, and, importantly, not doing more harm than good.

Warm up, cool down

1.Your muscles need some time to warm up when it’s cold, so take it easy when you set off and do a few stretches (伸展) once you're finished.

Drink water

You might not feel hot, but that's because sweat evaporates (蒸发) more quickly into the chilly, dry air. So be sure to drink water before, during and after cold-weather workouts.2.A belt bottle conveniently attaches to your waist so you don't have to carry it and can have a drink whenever you feel like it.

 3.

Running in cotton is a bad idea. Wear thin, breathable layers of synthetic ( 合成的)clothing that help protect you from the wind and snow, but still let out heat and moisture (水分) .Thirty percent of your body heat escapes through your hands and forty percent through your head. Wear a hat, or beanie (无边小便帽) ,and gloves so your circulatory system can distribute warm blood to the rest of your body.4.

Run into the wind

5.Obviously, it will be an easier passage home with some extra help from Mother Nature. But, more importantly, you won't have the wind in your face for the second half of your run, when you are more likely to be sweating and catch a chill.

A. Dress right.

B. Keep warm.

C. Don't go too fast, too soon.

D. Start and finish in the same way.

E. Don't wait to drink water until you feel thirsty.

F. Head out into the wind and come home with it at your back.

G. On really cold days, wear a mask or scarf over your mouth to protect your face.

When she first started learning about the climate change from one of her elders, Fawn Sharp was invited on a helicopter flight over the Olympic Mountains to survey the Mount Anderson glacier(冰川). But the glacier was gone, melted by the warming climate. Sharp had a deep sense of loss when she discovered the glacier wasn't there anymore.

Loss is a growing issue for people working and living on the front lines of climate change. And that gave Jennifer Wren Atkinson, a full-time lecturer at the University of Washington Bothell, US, an idea for a class.

This term, she taught students on the Bothell campus about the emotional burdens of environmental study. She used the experiences of Nalive American tribes (部落) , scientists and activists, and asked her 24 students to face the reality that there is no easy fix -- that "this is such an intractable problem that they're going to be dealing with it for the rest of their lives.”

Student Cody Dillon used to be a climate science skeptic (怀疑论者) . Then he did his own reading and research, and changed his mind.

Dillon wasn't going into environmental work--he was a computer-science major. Yet,the potential for a worldwide environmental catastrophe seemed so real to him five years ago that he quit his job and became a full-time volunteer for an environmental group that worked on restoration (恢复) projects.

Six months into the work, he decided that Alkinson's class was just what he was looking for - - a place where he could discuss his concerns about a changing climate.

Atkinson said she hopes the class helped her students prepare themselves for the amount of environmental loss that will happen over their lifetimes.

“We are already changing the planet - . so many species are going to be lost, displaced or massively impacted (巨大影响的) ,”she said. “The future isn't going to be what they imagined.”

1.Why did the author mention the case of Fawn Sharp?

A. To lay a basis for Fawn Sharp's further research.

B. To prove Fawn Sharp's work is similar to Atkinson's.

C. To lead into the issue of loss caused by climate change.

D. To show scientists' concern about the Mount Anderson glacier.

2.What's the main purpose of Atkinson's class?

A. To explore how different people deal with climate change.

B. To get students more concerned about environmental issue.

C. To find solutions to the Olympic Mountains environmental issue.

D. To teach students how to conduct a research about environment.

3.Which of the following best explains “intractable” underlined in Paragraph Three?

A. Simple.    B. Difficult.

C. Common.    D. Interesting.

4.How did Atkinson's class influence Dillon?

A. Dillon worked as a part-time volunteer for restoration projects.

B. It made him realize a planet-wide climate disaster would happen.

C. It encouraged him to be more involved in environmental protection.

D. It discouraged him to work on restoration projects for the environment.

Two deer jumped out in front of 16-year-old Amanda Floyd's car. She stepped on the brake, stopping the car just in time. But later, she started texting. Distracted (分心的),Amanda turned left and right, then crashed into another car. Luckily, she wasn't in a real car--she was in a driving simulator (模拟器) at Roosevelt High School, Ohio, US. “I never really realized that cars make a turn that much," Amanda, a Junior, said. She added that she wouldn't text while driving anymore.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and State Highway Patrol brought the simulator to the school. They said they wanted to help students learn about the danger of driving while drunk, while texting, or while talking on the phone.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed 3,4501ives in2016 alone. Experts believe the actual figure is probably higher.

The simulator is basically a computer program. Like many computer games, it was a hit with the students. They lined up and crowded around to watch each other take turns. The simulator has a steering wheel! (方向盘) ,brake and gas pedal (油门踏板) . It is made up of three large computer screens on a table.

Students choose a distraction, such as driving while drunk or texting. They always crash, of course. Then, they are pulled over by the police to be taught the bad results of their driving: how much damage they've caused, what their fine is, if anyone died in the accident, and if they're going to go to prison.

"It teaches how to drive without being on the road," said Shante Thompson, 16. She had just crashed into a deer.

ODOT spokesman Justin Chesnic said hundreds of kids have gone behind the wheel so far. He said even more have benefited from watching their classmates. "Driving is such a major responsibility, so take it seriously" he said.“Put away your cellphone. A lot of the accidents out there are because of distracted driving. It can not only change your life, but it can change someone else's life forever. The results are serious."

1.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph One?

A. Introduce the topic of the text.

B. Illustrate the author's point of view.

C. Provide some advice for the readers.

D. Offer some background information.

2.Why is the driving simulator project introduced to Roosevelt High School?

A. It tests the students' ability to stay focused.

B. It gets students to have fun between classes.

C. It teaches students how to deal with traffic accidents.

D. It makes students aware of the dangers of distracted driving.

3.What can we know about the driving simulator?

A. It is connected to the local police station.

B. It is a real car but has large computer screens.

C. It attracts the students' interest as a computer program.

D. It benefits the students who use it more than those who only watch.

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Traffic rules in Ohio, US.

B. Danger of distracted driving.

C. Simulated driving for students.

D. Advantages of computer games.

Kendrick Lamar hasn’t had much luck when it comes to winning a Grammy. But that’s OK:The US rapper(说唱歌手) has just won a Pulitzer Prize for his music.

In 2014, in 2016, and again this year. Lamar was nominated (提名)for an album of the year Grammy. Each time, he was beaten out, first by Taylor Swift, next by Daft Punk, and most recently by Bruno Mars.

But the Pulitzer Prize committee was inspired enough by Lamar's 2017 album, Damn, to award the 30-year-old its Pulitzer Prize in music on April 16. It's an amazing album that documents the real life of modem African-Americans in South Los Angeles with wildly accomplished beats and rhythms.

Lamar's win is considered to be historical. 'The Pulitzers have long displayed their preference toward high art rather than the pop culture of the masses. So it's not just that no rapper has ever won a Pulitzer: no pop music maker has ever won one in the award's 75-year history.

But Lamar is not just a singerhe's clever at using language. Like the best writers, his music describes small moments that illustrate (阐明) larger points. His songs are About his experience as a black man who grew up in California, struggled, got into trouble, and found his way out by working hard and making sense of the history and reality of racial problems in the US.

“He’s an artist who challenges idea,”said Ryan Coogler, director of the blockbuster(大片) hit Black Panther, for which Lamar created music. "One big theme in our film of,' What does it mean to be African?’ Kendrick in his music is very exactly and directly challenging that question."

Good artists entertain us, great artists make us think, and exceptional artists help us empathize (感同身受) .

There are a lot of good, great, even exceptional artists in rock, pop, country, and hip-hop. But only Lamar has a Pulitzer Prize.

1.What is Lamar’s album Damn about?

A. African-Americans’ history and culture.

B. Hardships of the African-American artists.

C. The ways the US government deal with racial problems.

D. The lives of modern black people in South Los Angeles.

2.Why is Lamar's Pulitzer Prize win significant?

A. He is the first film-maker to win the prize.

B. It is considered a milestone for pop music.

C. He is the first black person to win the prize.

D. He has missed Grammy several times before.

3.What can we learn from Ryan Coogler's words?

A. Lamar drew inspiration from his own experience.

B. Lamar has the courage to take on big challenges in life.

C. Black Panther is well known because of Lamar 's music.

D. Lamar's music matches the theme of Black Panther well.

When your children become teenagers, it’s time to start considering an after-school job.

1., so why shouldn’t our children? When your child has a job, he/she is responsible for getting to work on time and doing his/her job correctly. An after-school job is a good way to teach your teenager about responsibility.

By allowing your teenagers to have an after-school job you allow them to learn about money management. 2., they will have to manage how much money they can spend. They will realize that they can’t spend every dollar they make if they want to reach their goal.

You are probably saying, “Teens will get into trouble whether they have a job or not.”

3.. Depending on the distance from work to home, you could allow your children some extra time to get home after work. This will ensure that they don’t feel rushed but can still get home on time.

It’s a good idea to show your teenagers that hard work is what it takes to finish everything in their lives. 4.. What will they expect when they are out on their own if they have never had to work hard for what they want?

5.. All teenagers, no matter what their parents’ financial situation is, should have a job. They will need the experience before they do get out in the real world.

A. If they are saving up for their first car

B. When they refuse to have an after-school job

C. It is a good idea for all teenagers to have an after-school job

D. Most of adults in the U.S. had a job during their teenage years

E. They can’t learn the meaning of hard work if everything is handed to them

F. Having an after-school job will help your teenagers know their direction

G. But it is less likely that your children will get into trouble if they are working five evenings a week.

In early autumn I applied for admission to college. I wanted to go nowhere but to Cornell University, but my mother fought strongly against it. When she saw me studying a photograph of my father on the sports ground of Cornell, she tore it up.

“You can’t say it’s not a great university, just because Papa went there.”

“That’s not it at all. And it is a top university.” She was still holding the pieces in her hand. “But we can’t afford to send you to college.”

“I wouldn’t dream of asking you for money. Do you want me to get a job to help support you and Papa? Things aren’t that bad, are they?”

“No,” she said. “I don’t expect you to help support us.”

Father borrowed money form his rich cousins to start a small jewellery shop, His chief customers were his old college friends. To get new customers, my mother had to help. She picked up a long-forgotten membership in the local league of women, so that she could get to know more people. Whether those people would turn into customers was another question. I knew that my Parents had to wait for quite a long time before their small investment (投资) could show returns. What’s more, they had not wanted enough to be rich and successful Otherwise they could not possibly have managed their lives so badly.

I was torn between the desire to help them and change their lives, and the determination not to repeat their mistakes. I had a strong belief in my power to go what I wanted. After months of hard study I won a full college scholarship(奖学金).My father could hardly contain his pride in me, and my mother eventually gave in before my success.

Grandma, almost ninety years old, sat weakly on the park bench. She didn’t move. She just sat with her head down staring(凝视)at her hands. When I sat down beside her, she didn’t even notice me. I wondered if she was OK. So I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head, looked at me and said with a smile,” Yes, I’m fine .Thank you for asking me.”“I didn’t mean to disturb you, Grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,”I expained to her.

“Have you ever looked at your hands?” She asked “I mean really looking at your hands.” I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. And then I turned them over. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point my grandma was making. Grandma smiled and told me the following story, “My hands put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war. They were uneasy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band, they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote my letters to him and shook when I buried my parents. They held my children and grandchildren and comforted my neighbors. They covered my face ,combed() my hair and washed the rest of my body. These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and the ruggedness (崎岖)of life.”

When we hear the word “pyramid”(金字塔) there is little doubt that Egypt(埃及) and the desert come to mind. Did you know, however, that continents and oceans away — in what is today Central America and Mexico — people also built pyramids? While they look somewhat different from the ones we see in Egypt, they also were built with great skill.

The pyramids of Central America were built by the Mayan(玛雅) and Aztec(阿芝台克) peoples, as well as other smaller groups. Both Mayan and Aztec cultures built pyramids for their gods. They thought that building higher pyramids would allow them to get close to heaven. These cultures believed that the gods were found in nature. One of the most important gods was the sun. Many of the pyramids were for their sun god. At the top of the pyramids they built temples to make the gods happier. However, pyramids were not used only for their gods.
