When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. We’ve all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed—graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don’t think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you’ve ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.

Most people don’t make these choices consciously though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.

There’s no “getting rid of people”. People are always dropping into and out of each other’s lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don’t get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.

What about loyalty? Shouldn’t you always be loyal to your friends? Once you have a close friend, even if their influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldn’t you stick by them?

Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go. It means being loyal to their highest and best as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you aren’t showing loyalty by smoking right along with him. True loyally sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.

It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “I’m sorry, but I can’t have you in my life anymore." But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it’s often the best thing for the other person too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it is also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.

1.When experiencing major life changes, people may ________.

A.join a new social community B.influence their friends around

C.choose their friendships purposely D.have their people environment changed

2.What can be concluded from Paragraph 3 in the passage?

A.Everyone has at least one friend.

B.Friendship still exists though there’s less connection.

C.It is unnecessary to make new friends.

D.You ought to treat your old and new friend equally.

3.What is the author’s opinion on the loyalty to friends?

A.Never betray your close friends whatever happens.

B.Correct their mistakes while you guard their goodness.

C.Stick by your friends even though they do harm lo you.

D.Break up with your friends immediately if they smoke.

4.How should we behave when employed by a violent boss?

A.We should accept what we are told to do.

B.We should stay silent and be in favor of it.

C.We should bravely disobey him if he is wrong.

D.We should give our boss courage to continue.

A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure(安全的). To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.

Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own. The best way for a teenager to learn lesson is through experience. I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom.

Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work. I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so. Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone? Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate with friends.

Privacy is another issue between parents and their teenagers. Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home. I know that my mom always goes in my room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.

1.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A.Kids know how to live independently.

B.Some parents allow their kids no freedom.

C.It benefits teenagers to have freedom.

D.Kids have a dull routine every day

2.In the opinion of the author, ___________.

A.parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends

B.good friendships between kids harm their school work

C.it is unnecessary for a kid to have a cellphone

D.kids should focus on the school work

3.How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence?

A.Disappointed B.Lucky

C.Angry D.Calm

4.The author hopes to have her door locked in order to ______________.

A.keep her father from reading her dairy B.prevent her mother entering her room

C.Protect herself from any harm D.Stop thieves from going in

Jerome Karie and Isabella Lugoski met in their first physical chemistry class at the University of Michigan in 1940. Jerome Karie was in his first year of doctoral work, Isabella Lugoski was in her last year as an undergraduate(大学本科生), and they were laboratory partners. However, they didn't get along well at first.

Isabella Lugoski looked back on the past, “I walked into the physical chemistry laboratory and there's a young man in the desk next to mine with his equipment all set up running his experiment. I don't think I was very polite about my question. I asked him how he got there early and had everything all set up. He didn't like that. So we didn't talk to each other for a while.

Their relationship got going as they competed for the top grade in that course and they started to build connection because both of them were interested in chemistry. They married in 1942. By 1946, both of the Karies had earned doctorates in physical chemistry, and, after a period of time at the University of Chicago working on the Manhattan Project, moved to Washington DC to join the US Naval Research Laboratory.

Each specialized in a different aspect of X-ray crystallography(晶体学): Jerome focused on developing equations(方程式) that could determine how atoms(原子) were arranged inside complex molecules, while Isabella ran practical experiments to test how well the equations worked. Working together, they created what is now called the direct method for determining molecular structures(分子结构), which has allowed scientists to effectively study and copy complex organic molecules to continue further study.

Jerome Karie was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1985. Although he was disappointed that the Nobel committee had ignored Isabella's contribution to that work, she was unfazed. At that point, she had already won more awards and prize money for her experimental work than he had.

1.What did Isabella Lugoski do when she first met Jerome Karie?

A.She blamed him for his being late. B.She set up all his equipment for him.

C.She asked him a question impolitely. D.She observed his experiment silently.

2.What made Jerome Karie and Isabella Lugoski become connected?

A.Their common interest in chemistry. B.Their wonderful marriage since 1940.

C.Their pleasant first talk in a laboratory. D.Their successful cooperation in courses.

3.What is paragraph 4 mainly intended to show?

A.The Karies' encouraging further study. B.The Karies' good teamwork in science.

C.How the Karies worked with others. D.Why the Karies won the Nobel Prize.

4.Which of the following best explains “unfazed" underlined in the last paragraph?

A.Generous. B.Touched. C.Shocked. D.Calm.

Making beers on the moon might seem like a pipe dream to many, but for a group of students from the University of California at San Diego, there is a chance to take their research beyond Earth’s surface.

The Lab2Moon competition, held by TeamIndus, is offering students the chance to secure a spot on the TeamIndus rocket this year.

Taking craft beer to the next level, the students want to test whether it’s possible for yeast(酵母) to work and create beer on the moon. However, they believe the experiment is not just a creative concept for astronauts, it’s also important for the development of drugs and yeast-containing food, like bread.

“The idea started out with a few laughs among a group of friends,” said Neeki Ashari, a fifth-year bioengineering students at UC San Diego. “We all appreciate the craft beer. When we heard that there was an opportunity to design an experiment that would go up on India’s moonlander, w e thought we could combine our hobby with the competition by focusing on the practicality of yeast in outer space.”

The preparation work for the beer — up to the stage of adding yeast — will all be done on Earth, and rather than separating the fermentation ( 发酵) and carbonation stage of making beer, the team plans to combine them.

This removes the need to release CO2 accumulated in the process, which may result in cleanliness and safety issues out in space.

If selected, Team Original Gravity will be the first to make beer in outer space, and the fermentation will take place in a container no bigger than a soda can.

All teams competing for the place will showcase their ideas in Bangalore, India, in March.

Sadly, you won’t be enjoying moon beer in your local craft beer bar anytime soon, as no samples will be brought back. However, this small experiment could provide important data on just how practical it is for us to make and create our own resources on other planets and moons by learning how consumables (消耗品) behave in different environments.

1.How did the students feel when they got the chance to design the experiment ?

A.Excited. B.Nervous.

4.What does the author think of the students ’ idea?

A.It seems like a pipe dream. B.It’s extremely complicated.

C.It’s meaningful and hopeful. D.It’s creative but impractical.

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise. In the end ,I said, “ Son, remember: Be slow and steady, and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”

Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”

I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”

“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”

“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (坚忍不拔的), by pushing on steadily.”

Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.

In many ways, Alma Deutscher is like other 11-year-olds. She loves to climb trees, dance, read, and draw. But Alma, who lives in Dorking, England, has made one very special achievement. She has composed a full opera and brought it to the stage. Her opera, a retelling of Cinderella (灰姑娘), premiered (首次演出) in December 2016, in Vienna, Austria.

“I’ve loved Cinderella since I was 3,” Alma said. But she felt the story needed an improvement. “I didn’t like the thing about the shoe,” she says. “Why should the prince find her because of her feet?”

In Alma’s version (版本), Cinderella is a composer. She creates a melody (旋律) that she sings to the prince before fleeing the ball. “He remembers the beginning but not how it went on,” Alma says. The prince realizes that only Cinderella would know how the melody continues. He uses that knowledge to find her.

Alma began writing the opera when she was 8. It premiered on December 29, 2016, and the audience stood up and cheered. Alma played the piano and violin and performed in the show. “It was something that was completely inside my head, in my imagination, and then it came to life,” Alma says.

Alma says she is sure that music will remain a major part of her life. “I have lots of things that I want to compose,” she says. “The first one is a piano concerto (协奏曲). Then I’m writing a novel, and I want to write a movie based on it, and the music for that.”

She also has advice for kids who want to achieve their big dreams. “It’s a lot of work to reach a high level,” Alma says. “But if you love what you are doing, it doesn’t feel like hard work. Don’t let anyone stop you from doing it.”

1.What does the author mostly want to tell us about Alma Deutscher in Paragraph 1?

A.She is a cute girl. B.She lives in Vienna Austria.

C.She has a special music talent. D.She is always ready to help others.

2.What can we learn from Alma’s version of Cinderella?

A.The prince knows how the melody continues.

B.The prince finds Cinderella because of a melody.

C.The prince finds Cinderella because of her shoes.

D.The prince sings a melody to Cinderella before her fleeing the ball.

3.How was the performance of Alma’s Opera Cinderella?

A.It was a great success. B.It disappointed the audience.

C.It set a good example for other kids. D.It was something in Alma’s imagination.

4.What can we learn from Alma’s advice to other kids in the last paragraph?

A.Knowledge is power. B.A good beginning is half done.

C.Failure is the mother of success. D.Nothing is difficult if you’re enthusiastic.

Books to Read in Your 20s

The Kite Runner

By Khaled Hosseini

As a Middle Eastern and North African Studies student, I have a great interest in books about what takes place in this area. I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn’t yet, I highly recommend (推荐) it.

Firefly Lane

By Kristin Hannah

This is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll share this book to your best friend.

By Nicholas Kristof

For any person of any age, Half the Sky is a must-read. It describes the struggle of women and the most pressing human rights problems of our time: the common oppression of women  and girls.

The Little Prince

By Antoine de Saint

This children’s book is simple. It might seem like a wrong book to recommend to someone in their twenties but perhaps that’s what makes it a good choice. It sings praises to exploration and shows the importance of making friends.

Many people often find themselves waking up in the middle of the night, unusually awake and excited.1.. That’s really frustrating. However, there is no need to worry. Here are some effective ways to help you fall asleep again.

Remain in bed. For you to fall asleep, your heart rate needs to slow down. When you get up, your heart rate goes up. So, avoid going to the bathroom during the night if you can. Do not eat too little or too much for dinner. Do not drink and fill your bladder(膀胱)before bed.2.. It may make you fall asleep faster, but it may also disrupt your sleep later in the night.

Stay in the dark. When you cannot sleep, LED lights on printers and cable boxes may be the reason. The same is true for light streaming in through cracks in curtains. 3.. You should cover lights with tape and wear a sleep mask. A popular choice has deep eye cups so your eyes can open and shut while you wear them.

Quiet your mind. Try ways to relax, such as deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness exercises.4.. The point is to keep your brain busy with something that is not demanding and is relaxing.

In the fall of 2017, when Paula Aldridge needed to get a job, she found herself at a crossroads. The 50-year-old wasn’t sure she would ever work again, due to health issues.

But Aldridge’s life and career journey started to turn around after she connected with Goodwill of Central Iowa’s skills (技能) training programs. These programs aim to help people develop the specific, real-world skills they need to get and keep a job, through a combination of detailed teaching and hands-on experience.

When Aldridge first connected with Goodwill in September 2017, she was having trouble finding a job. Transportation was challenging, as she didn’t have a driver’s license or own a car. Aldridge also had a limited work history with long employment gaps (间断) , meaning she missed the chances to learn important skills, such as working a credit card machine. Besides, her physical health issues were also a problem.

According to Kayleigh Duff, a career specialist at Goodwill of Central Iowa, the biggest difficulty Aldridge had to overcome was from within. “She said outwardly that she had all of this confidence and that she knew how strong a worker she was, but I don’t think she truly believed it herself.”

Thankfully, many people offer Aldridge encouragement and guidance. She first started off in the food service training program but was eager to enter the retail (零售) skills program, since she had worked at the Salvation Army and Subway before. When Aldridge mentioned her interest in retail, Duff recognized that her go-getting attitude would be perfect for the program.

The seven-week retail skills training is a systematic program combining classroom teaching with on- the-job experience at a Goodwill store. As Aldridge graduated from the program, she became more confident in her abilities.

Duff said it was great to see how Aldridge grew into the devoted worker she is today. “She has this strong desire, this longing to succeed. And she knows that she’s able to do that, although she has fallen short in the past.”

1.What can be learned about Goodwill’s training programs?

A.They combine theory with practice.

B.They will surely find a good job for people in the program.

C.They are designed mainly for the unemployed.

D.They were set up in the autumn of 2017.

2.What was the biggest problem Aldridge faced according to Duff?

A.Poor health.

B.Poor working skills.

C.Without enough confidence.

D.Not having a driver’s license.

3.Why did Aldridge change her training program?

A.She wanted to attend a more systematic program.

B.She wanted to get some hands-on experience.

C.She was more interested in retail.

D.She followed Duff’s advice.

4.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.A 50-year-old devotes herself to Goodwill.

B.Goodwill helps a 50-year-old turn her life around.

C.Goodwill training programs spring up around the world.

D.Success is closely connected to good training programs.

At your next meeting, wait for a pause (停顿) in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.

Among English speakers, it is probable that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our understanding of silence differs greatly across cultures.

What one culture considers a confusing or embarrassing pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of thought and respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch (荷兰语) and also in English found that when a silence in conversation lasts four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. However, another study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds—nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.

In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all. It’s already a failure to understand each other by speaking because you’re repairing that failure by using words.

In the US, it may originate from the history of colonial (殖民地的) America as a crossroads of many different races (种族). When you have difference, it’s hard to reach common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people use words to establish a common life. This applies also to some extent to London.

However, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it’s easier for some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well know.

1.Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation?

A.The Dutch

B.The American

C.The English

D.The Japanese

2.What might the Japanese agree with in a conversation?

A.Speaking more gives the upper hand.

B.Speak out what you have in your mind.

C.Great minds think alike without words.

D.The shorter talking silence, the better.

3.What can we learn from the text?

A.A four second silence in conversation is universal.

B.It’s hard for American to reach a common agreement.

C.English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.

D.The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears.

4.What does the underlined word “homogeneity” in the last paragraph mean?

A.Similarity

B.Difference

C.Disagreement

D.Misunderstanding

For many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going where no human had gone before. He wanted to cut a path through unexplored lands and discover rare species.

That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it into a reality.

In December 2015, he and a team of Australian scientists explored an isolated rainforest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people to enter the region. “As time was limited, we were dropped in by helicopter. Once we were on the ground, there were no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around,” Bexler says.

Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chicken-like bird with strange orange skin hanging from its neck. The scientists soon determined that the unusual creature was a type of honeyeater — the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60 years.

The honeyeater wasn’t the only surprise for the scientists. They discovered more than 40 previously unknown plant and animal species — 13 birds of paradise, 20 frogs, four butterflies, and five palms. “We were like kids in a candy store,” Bexler recalls. “Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before.”

The newfound species didn’t shy away from the scientists. Two long-nosed echidnas — primitive egg-laying mammals — let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them.

Bexler thinks the animals weren’t frightened because they had never seen humans before. “In almost all parts of New Guinea, animals are hunted for food, and because of this, they are very cautious of people,” he explains. “This area gives scientists a place where they can go to study the behaviors of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people.”

Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia. Bexler and his team did not have enough time to study the area completely. They hope to return to record more undiscovered species. “We just scratched the surface,” Bexler says. “Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery.”

1.Which word best describes Bruce Bexler?

A.Modest. B.Adventurous.

C.Optimistic. D.Confident.

2.What does Bruce Bexler mean in Paragraph 5 when he says the scientists “were like kids in a candy store”?

A.They didn’t have enough food and were hungry.

B.They were very excited about what they saw.

C.They were behaving like naughty children.

D.They knew that if they kept searching, they’d find sugar.

3.Why did some of the animals allow the scientists to pick them up?

A.The scientists seemed to be very friendly.

B.The scientists were good at handling animals.

C.The animals had been well-trained by the local people.

D.The animals had no experience or fear of people.

4.What can we conclude about the area Bruce Bexler explored?

A.The best way to explore the area is by helicopter.

B.The area has not been visited by scientists for many years.

C.The area still contains many plants and animals unknown to science.

D.The locals are unwilling to allow the scientists to enter the deep woods.

Music makes you more creative.1., they come up with more creative solutions, according to researchers. It may be because music improves your brain’s flexibility. Another reason may be that it relaxes you enough for the creative juices to flow. But don’t play music  too loudly.

Music can help during surgery. 2.. After surgery, it helps reduce pain. An analysis  of 73 studies confirmed that listening to music before, during or after surgery reduces anxiety and pain levels, which in turn means less pain medication.

3. Studies have found that when you’re running, biking or walking, you’ll go farther with music on. Music relieves your discomfort and motivates you to stay on. The effect is so obviously great that the author of a review examining the psychological effects of music  on exercise called music “a type of legal performance-improvement drug”.

Music aids sleep. Listening to music before bed can help you fall asleep faster and wake up less often during the night. 4.. In one study, seniors with sleep problems who listened  to 45 minutes of soft slow music before bed reported a 35 percent improvement in their sleep.

Music gets you to ignore the passing of time. Scientists have shown repeatedly that people judge a period of waiting shorter when music is playing. Businessmen use that to their advantage, playing music so you stay longer and spend more. For instance, more drinks and food are sold in bars and restaurants when music is played. 5., grocery sales increase by 38 percent.

A.In this case, you’ll feel more relaxed in the morning

B.And if the background music is slow

C.Then you play a piece of brief music

D.When people listen to happy music than when they sit in silence

E.When music is played varying from a tune to another

F.Music makes you get rid of the idea of quitting a workout

G.Listening to music before surgery has been shown to ease anxiety

Humans really do have a sixth sense that lets us detect magnetic fields (磁场), but we’re not aware we have it. It has long been known as ESP, Spider Sense, or the ability to see things before they happen. But now scientists have proved that humans really do have a sixth sense-that lets them detect magnetic fields. Tests have shown that mankind may have the same inborn sense of Earth’s magnetic field that has long been proved to exist in animals.

By putting a protein from the human retina (视网膜) into fruit flies, researchers noticed that the insect adjusted its flight path just as if its eye had not been changed. This suggests that the “sixth sense” does exist in humans but we might not be aware of it. Animals use such sight to navigate long distances during migration or, in the case of birds, to “see” where they are going. The complex tests involved examining the process by which light goes through a bird’s eye, which has interested the scientific community for more than 30 years. In the late 1970s, the physicist Klaus Schulten concluded that birds fly by relying on geomagnetically (地磁) sensitive biochemical reactions in their eyes.

Tests have shown that the special cells in the eye carry out this function using the protein cryptochrome (蛋白隐色素). Professor Reppert’s team used wild fruit flies, replacing their version of cryptochrome with the human equivalent (等价物), and then put them in a maze (迷宫) with each wing wrapped in a metal coil (金属圈). They then sent electricity through it so that the coil was magnetised in a way which is just like Earth’s electromagnetic field (电磁场). The flies responded in exactly the same way as if they had their own cryptochrome, by either avoiding the magnetic fields or moving towards them if the researchers had placed sugar nearby.

The new study was published in the journal Nature Communications.

1.What do we know about humans’ sixth sense?

A.Humans have been aware of it since ancient times.

B.It is quite different from the animals’.

C.It is the ability to predict what will happen.

D.It is also a sense developed after birth.

2.Why did researchers put a protein from the human retina into fruit flies?

A.To change fruit flies’ flight path.

B.To test if humans have a sixth sense.

C.To examine the process of birds’ flying.

D.To allow researchers detect magnetic fields.

3.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.the maze B.each wing

C.cryptochrome D.the metal coil

4.After being replaced the cryptochrome, how are the wild fruit flies?

A.They responded normally as if there had been nothing changed.

B.They couldn’t avoid the magnetic fields like before.

C.They lost the sense of direction completely.

D.They couldn’t find the sugar the researchers had placed nearby.

Professor Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech developed an artificially intelligent teaching assistant to help handle the enormous number of student questions in the online class, Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence. Professor Goel already had eight teaching assistants, but that wasn’t enough to deal with the overwhelming number of daily questions from students.

Many students drop out of online courses because of the lack of teaching support. When students feel ignored or confused and reach out with questions that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to taper off. Professor Goel decided to do something to improve this situation and his solution was to create a virtual assistant named Jill Watson.

Goel and his team developed several versions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the online forums. At first, the virtual assistant wasn’t too great. But Goel and his team sourced the online discussion forum to find all the 40,000 questions that had ever been asked since the class was launched. Then they began to feed Jill with the questions and answers. After some adjustments and sufficient time, Jill was able to answer the students’ questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic that the students didn’t know she was a computer. The students, who were studying artificial intelligence, were interacting with the virtual assistant and couldn’t tell it apart from a real human being. Goel didn’t inform them about Jill’s true identity until April 26. The students were actually very positive about the experience.

The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all the questions posed by students on the online forum. Professor Goel has a much rosier outlook on the future of artificial intelligence.

1.What problem did Professor Goel meet with?

A.Students’ questions were too many to deal with.

B.Teaching assistants were not professional at all.

C.Many students were lack of interest in his class.

D.He felt confused about how to teach online.

2.Which of the following best explains the underlined phrase in Paragraph 2?

A.grow dramatically B.increase sharply

C.decrease gradually D.decline unreasonably

3.What do we learn about Jill Watson?

A.She could answer all questions without mistakes.

B.She turned out to be a great success.

C.Her performance was remarkable all the way.

D.Her true identity was still a secret to students.

4.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.A robot gives an online course.

B.Virtual assistant is getting popular in school.

C.Robots will replace humans in online classes.

D.One Georgia Tech’s teaching assistant isn’t human.

Nicole Ihus’s son John Henry was born last month with a life-threatening disease. Nicole and her husband, who live in Kansas City, contacted doctors from Minnesota and Missouri in hopes of finding a doctor who could treat John Henry for the condition, but to no avail. Luckily, Nicole managed to get in contact with the “best doctor in the world for this condition” at Johns Hopkins All Children’s in St. Petersburg, Florida, so she traveled all the way to the Sunshine State to give her newborn son a fighting chance.

After John Henry was into the ICU, Nicole felt alone in the new state, although she  knew that she had to leave her son’s side in order to buy him some new clothes. Upon ordering an Uber ride to the nearby Rhea Lana children’s clothing store, she was picked up by a woman named Belinda.

Shortly after Nicole got into Belinda’s car, the new mother couldn’t help talking about her heartbreaking circumstances.

“She told me her story,” Belinda said. “She was in tears a couple of times and I really felt for her.” Rather than simply dropping Nicole off at the store, however, Belinda parked the car and insisted on accompanying her passenger into the store so she could treat John Henry to new clothes. Needless to say, Nicole was filled with gratitude.

Nicole said, “For this stranger to go completely out of her way - stop what she was doing and stop making money- to come be with me for a couple of hours while we shopped together, that was just incredible.” As Nicole cares for her newborn son and raises money for his medical conditions, she hopes to introduce the Uber driver to her son as a thank you for her compassionate gesture.

1.Why did the new mother have to travel to Florida?

A.Her husband worked there.

B.She wanted to have a baby there.

C.Her sick son might get cured there.

D.She wanted to find a cheap hospital there.

2.What did Belinda do to comfort Nicole?

A.Drop her off at the hospital.

Dear Peter,

I'm glad what you are caring about the development of my hometown. Great changes have been taken place since the 19th National Congress of Communist Party of China. The targeted poverty reduction has reached it's ideal aims. Many poor family have got effective help from the local government and have improved their life greatly. Old houses are replaced by new tall buildings which are surrounding with green trees and colourful flowers. The rivers once heavy polluted are getting clearer and clearer. Much to our delighted, lots of fishes return to the rivers. The blue sky paints itself with colors and the birds joyfully dances with the music of gentle winds.

Please come to visiting my hometown in the near future.

Yours,

Li Hua
