The Center for Humane Technology is made up of people who created many popular apps(软件)for big tech companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter. 1.

The center has started a movement called the Truth About Tech. Its purpose is to teach students, parents and teachers about the dangers of spending too much time on smart phones and computers.

According to studies on kids and technology, more than 95 per cent of primary school children spend time every day using a computer, or smart phone. About 78 per cent of teenagers check their phones every hour. 2. They are afraid that they may miss an important call or message during night.

3. For example, spending too much time online can cause people to put on weight and also influence how they feel. Many people become worried or nervous because they feel they aren’t having as much fun as their friends are. 4. They may also find it harder to make friends in real life.

5. They say that when big tech companies are designing tech tools for kids, they should think about what they would want for their own children.

A. These people are worth our respect.

B. Now they are telling kids to put their phones away.

C. Most students are forbidden to use a phone in class.

D. And more than half of them sleep with their phones.

E. Students may have a harder time paying attention in school.

F. Using phones or computers too much can cause some health problems.

G. The center also wants governments and tech companies to take steps to protect children.

At some point in life many people suffer a mental problem While most people get over it for others it doesn't go away easily

The World Health Organization WHO says that about 20 percent of children and teenagers across the globe suffer from mental illness It's thought that the number of children and teenagers with mental illness around the world will increase by half by 2020 It will become one of the main causes of disease disabilities and even death

The reason for mental problems among young people may be the increasing pressure in life Study and relationships have always caused huge stresses for school children For instance they experience school bullying(欺凌)and academic pressure

In China the picture isn't bright either About 30 million Chinese children and teenagers under the age of 17 or 10 percent of children and teenagers in China have a mental health challenge reported China Daily

Also according to China Daily Chinese people don't seek help with their mental problems They fear that others will think less of them if they admit that they are in trouble Many Chinese people are ashamed of their mental problems and mental illness is taboo(禁忌)in any Chinese families

In the UK over three-quarters of young people believe their mental health problems have a social shame and a quarter of young UK people wouldn't ask for help if they developed a mental problem

Young people who don't seek help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future If you feel something is wrong within you - seek help

Feeling down Here are three things to try if you feel low

●Go to a psychology teacher The teacher will listen to you and offer help - for free!

When I was 3 years old, I was found to be deaf in my left ear and have a small problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I’ve never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow.

Imagine being able to shut out all sounds as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That’s my reality when I sleep on my “good ear”, and it even makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.

People call my deaf side my “bad ear”, but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features(特征)that some other deaf people don’t.

In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.

Having a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however.

On the first day I got my aid, when I was 8, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, “Aren’t those for old men?”

At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers(同龄人).

But it’s not just choolkids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens(负担).

Every video on social media that lacks subtitles, for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it.

Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.

And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted.

As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations – I’m lucky.

I’m deaf, but I can still hear everything. I’ve been blessed with wonderful life experiences.

1.The author once feel diferent from his peers because __________.

A. He can’t hear anything

B. He was laughed at by his classmates

C. He couldn’t enjoy without subtitles

D. He could shut out all sounds when sleeping on his “good ear”

2.Deaf people may have the following burdens EXCEPT _________.

A. being unable to afford hearing aids.

B. being unable to enjoy videos without subtitles

C. being embarrassed in front of their peers

D. being blessed with wonderful experiences

3.What does the underline pharse “are excluded from” probably mean?

A. are prevented from    B. are limited to    C. are separated from    D. are reduced to

4.What is the author’s attitude toward his hearing difficulty?

A. It was a tough reality and caused him a lot of trouble.

B. It was a time of great sorrow and made him feel sad.

C. It gave him a chance to experience something special.

D. It helped him to live in his own world without sound.

Josh Hill, a biology teacher at Mar Vista High School in California, US, often gets sick after swimming in the ocean at Imperial Beach in California.

He and a group of students are raising awareness(意识)about water pollution by taking weekly water samples(样本)of the ocean and publishing their results online.

Every Thursday, Hill and his students collect water from the ocean. Students then take the samples to their school and test them for levels of bacteria. Usually, samples closer to the border have higher levels of bacteria, Hill said.

“Water quality is usually the worst at the southern end and it increasingly gets better,” he said.

Hill collects the samples on Thursdays so that students can publish the results on the Surfrider Foundation’s website in time for the weekend. The Surfrider Foundation has give Mar Vista lab equipment and promote the students’ results on its site.

Most of Hill’s students grew up in Imperial Beach. Many have gotten sick from the water or know someone who has.

Cameron Bell, 17, who is currently applying to college, wants to pursue a STEM career. He appreciates the fact the he can get lab experience at school. “Our research really impacts our community because it’s keeping people safe,” he said.

On a recent Thursday morning, Anthony Gass, 15, collected some samples. Before he got into the water, his classmates helped him put on waterproof(防水的)clothes and tie a rope around his waist to protect him from the onrush of water.

Hill said the protection probably wasn’t necessary, but that it was better to be safe than to be sorry. “We just want to make sure we protect the students,” he said.

1.What did Josh Hill and his students discover after checking the water samples?

A. Water quality at the northern end isn’t poluted.

B. Water nearer to the border is bless polluted.

C. Water pollution is getting worse and worse.

D. Different levels of bacteria are found in the water.

2.What can we learn about Bell?

A. He is now applying for a job in college.    B. He doesn’t want to have a career in STEM.

C. He thinks that their research is meaningful.    D. He isn’t grateful for his research experience.

3.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A. The results of the students’ research are not published online.

B. Many students in Imperial Beach get sick due to the water pollution.

C. Very few safety measures are adopted in students’ research work.

D. Mar Vista High School is not equipped with modern science labs.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A. US students’ research on water pollution.    B. Severe ocean water pollution in the US.

C. US students’ tests for water resources.    D. Tips on how to reduce water pollution.

My father's friend Henry used to be a teacher at a medical school and he was very strict to his students. The students were afraid of him though he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave. Once a  student seated before him, and Henry required him to describing a certain illness, his description of which turned out to be OK. Then Henry asked about the cure for the illness, but the student gave the right answer. “How much will you give the patient? ""A full spoor’s!" Suddenly the student realizes that there was anything wrong. He said anxiously,"I've made the mistake:a full spoon is too many, and he can take only five drops." "It's too late;your patient has been died," Henry said coldly.

Tolerance means tolerating or pulling up with differences.

1.This concept means different things to different people, but it is when something is disagreeable  that tolerance is expected, and in more politically correct cultures, demanded.

There are many different ways to show tolerance. A person might fully disagree with other on any issue, while at the same respecting those with different opinions and treat them with dignity2..

One problem is the fact this respect is sometimes one-sided. 3., but some supporters feel reasonable in labeling those who disagree with hateful terms, and vice versa.People on both sides of an issue must be tolerant of each other.

4. ,It does not mean that a person has to accept actions or ideas that are against his or her values or beliefs. it means that each person agrees to respect the other's right to his or her feelings on the matter. When both parties have expressed their opinions, and it is obvious that neither is likely to change position, agreeing to disagree is often the ideal outcome.

Some degree of tolerance  is necessary in any civilized society.5..It goes against human nature. Putting up with differences is a virtue that requires honest effort on the part of every person. It takes time to develop.

A.Therefore, both parties should change their opinions if necessary.

B. It is widely accepted that tolerance is a critical step towards a peaceful world.

C.It refers to showing respect for the race, religion and opinions of other people.

D. Disagreement alone does not equal intolerance.

E. However, it is not realistic to believe that all people can achieve it completely on every issue.

F.Those who disagree with a particular issue must respect the opinions of those who support it.

G. When it comes to controversial issues, tolerance may also represent a let's  agree to disagree attitude.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world.

Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to  acupundure, cupping and massage (针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on US.swimmer Michael  Phelps' back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.

As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that-while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs.

Herbs, are made into pills, powder  and soup, and the kind of herbs uscd1 their quality and  quantity, and the processing of the  ingredients jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an  increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs.

Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription  drugs is the lack of creativity, While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyour's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria(疟疾)treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time.

1.The author mentions the example of Michael Phelps in order to show     .

A. he was injured in his swimming.

B. cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.

C. westerners know a little about TCM.

D. westerners attach great importance to TCM.

2.Why don't some member countries of WIIO recognize Chinese herbal medicine?

A. Because Chinese herbs can  get rid of diseases

B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture

C. Because western medicine 15 more effective

D. Because medicine made out or Chinese herbs develops slowly

3.Compared with Western medicine, what is the main weak point of TCM ?

A. The methods of processing herbs.

B. The effectiveness of prescription.

C. Lacking in standardization.

D. Its unstable functions.

4.The lack of creativity in TCM refers to the fact that    .

A. medicine-making companies lack creativity.

B. prescriptions are got from the past.

C. Western companies  are more experienced.

D. medicine-making companies lack driving force

Don't get mad the next time you catch your teenager texting when he promised to be studying. He simply may not be able to resist. A University of lowa(UI) study found teenagers are far more sensitive than adults to the immediate effect or reward of their behaviors. The findings may help explain why the initial rush of texting may be more attractive for adolescents than the long-term pay off of studying.

"For the teenager, 'the rewards are attractive." says Professor Jatin  Vaidya,an author of the study. "They draw adolescent. Sometimes, the rewards are a kind of motivation for them. Even when a behavior is  no  longer in a teenager's best interest to continue, they will, because the effect of  the reward is still there and lasts much longer in adolescents than in adults ."

For parents, that means limiting distraction (分心的事情)so teenagers can make better choices. Take the homework and social media dilemma: At 9 p.m., shut off  everything except a  computer that has no access to  Facehook or Twitter, the researchers advise. "I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed access to technology," Vaidya says. But some help in netting their concentration is necessary for them  so they can develop those impulse-control skills.”

In their study,Vaidya and co-author Shaun Vecera note researchers generally believe teenagers are impulsive(冲动的),make bad decisions, and engage in risky behavior because the frontal lobes(额叶)of their trains are not fully developed. But the UI researchers wondered. whether something more fundamental was going on with adolescents to cause behaviors independent of higher-level reasoning.

"We wanted to try to understand the brain's reward system how it change from chillhood to adulthood," Says Vaidya, who adds the reward character in the human brain is easier than decision-making. “We've been trying to understand the reward process in adolescence and   whether there is more to  adolescence behavior than an under-developed frontal  lobe,”he adds. For their study ,the researchers persuaded 40 adolescents, aged 13 and 16,and 40 adults, aged 20 and 35 to participate.

In the future, researchers hope to look into the psychological and neurological(神经学上的)aspects of their results.

1.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A. The initial rush of texting is less attractive for adolescents than the long-term pay off of studying.

B. Always, rewards are attractive to teenagers.

C. Resistance can be controlled well by adolescents.

D. Getting rewards is the greatest motivation for adolescents to study.

2.Which  statement  agrees with Vaidya's idea?

A. The influence of the reward is weak in adolescents.

B. Parents should help children in making decisions.

C. Children should have access to the Internet.

D. Children need help in refocusing their attention.

3.What result does teenagers' brain underdevelopment lead to?

A. Doing things after some thought.

B. Making good decisions.

C. Joining in dangerous actions.

D. Escaping risky behavior.

4.How did the researchers carry out their study?

A. By making a comparison of brain examinations.

B. By examining adults’ brain.

C. By examining teenage brain.

D. By building the train’s reward system.

It's a little hard to figure out the rules for sure but the baby African buffalo (水牛)seems to have the upper hand. The two stand a couple  feet apart, staring at each other. Behind them, their mothers look on with the kind of indifference (不关心)of mothers everywhere who see their kids playing a harmless game.

The alarm went off about half an hour ago, the second time tonight. Here, one bell means "elephant ",two "rhino"(犀牛),and three and four,I really can't remember for what, because when you' re awoken by bells in the middle of the night, your first thought won’t be Animal", But as soon as I realized it was the rhino alarm, I was running for the stairs.

Yet I'm the only one watching the animals stare-down. Either nobody else died of a heart attack when the bells went off, or I was the only one in the entire hotel who didn't turn the alarm switch to off before going to bed.

The Ark, a hotel shaped like the biblical ark(圣经的方舟), lies in the highlands of Kenya’s Aberdare National Park, about 100 kilometers north of Nairobi. At the Ark's prow (船首) are huge windows overlooking a waterhole. Earlier tonight,I'd watched a pack of wolves, buffalos and elephants. And now, at Three or so in the mornings  I'm  down  for  the round of rhino bells. The first time, 2.5 hours ago, it was a single black rhino, which came  down, got a  drink, and left.

I'd have been sorry for the lost sleep. I've already arranged with a guide to take me out at sunrise for the so-called "should-never-missed" bird-watching, where well get to see 30 species, but really, how many times in your life will you get to wake up and say,"Wow! Rhino? Isn't that the definition of a pretty good right? Last week we went from Uganda into Kenya,Before I left home, I thought I'd be happy with ten elephants and five or six giraffes on the whole trip.I  didn't dare to dream the rhino.

2.What's the author's attitude toward the bell?

A. It's  bothering but two bells are welcome.

B. It should be turned off whenever it rings,

C. Its visitors have a chance to see buffalos.

D. It is a very bad way to wake the guests up.

3.What does the underlined part “died of a heart attack" in paragraph 3 mean ?

A. died unexpectedly

B. felt extremely excited

C. felt very uncomfortable and tired

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was the first time that my father had asked me to help him. By the time we finished, herring (鲱鱼) covered the bottom of the boat as deep as my knees. For the first time in days, my father seemed happy.

Then he looked at the western sky, and his smile disappeared.

They are called Northwesters. They're storms that sweep out of Canada hard and fast. No one can predict their arrival. All fishermen fear them.

“We're going back,” my father said.

He started the motor. We were only two miles out, but the shore looked to me to be as far away as the moon. Over the distant hills, black clouds ran toward us like wild horses. My father set a course directly for them.

We made it only halfway home before we met the storm.

The wind came first. It lifted the lake in whitecaps. The weight of the herring made us ride low in the water, and the waves broke over our bow(船头).

By the time the rain came, we'd put more distance behind us. Although we were now only half a mile from shore, the rain fell so hard that we couldn't see the land.

I was scared, but I saw my father sitting straight in the stern(船尾), holding the boat steady into the wind, and I felt hopeful.

I was starting to think we were going to make it. That's when the motor died. My father tried many times to restart it, but failed. I saw that the boat was coming about. I knew what that meant.

We would sink in no time.

"Grab an oar(), "he shouted above the wind.

We set the oars in the locks and began to pull hard. My father dug his oar into the water, bringing the boat around, bow into the wind again. With all my strength, I pulled on my own oar.

The wind pushed hard against us. We seemed to be fighting the anger of the whole lake.

Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.

Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20, 000 people who dug for gold, 4, 000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.

But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.

1.What attracted the early settlers to New York City?

A. Its business culture.    B. Its small population.

C. Its geographical position.    D. Its favourable climate.

2.What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?

A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.    B. One out of five people got rich.

C. Almost everyone gave up.    D. Half of them died.

3.What is the text mainly about?

A. The rise and fall of a city.    B. The gold rush in Canada.

C. Journeys into the wilderness.    D. Tourism in Dawson.

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, “You're nervous and that's okay. Everyone is afraid of high school.” I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.

On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn't figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn't think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right.

Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.

Since then, I've been elected vice monitor of my class, which wasn't much of a victory since only three people ran for the four positions.

It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something that any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some out-of-class activities because you'll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn't straight A's.

Most important of all, be who you are, whether you're a “fool”, an athlete, or a lower grader. Don't try to pretend to be someone you're not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.

2.From the author's first day experience we can infer that ________.

A. his home was far from the school

B. he got to school before classes began

C. he was fond of the school immediately.

D. he didn't know the right way to class

3.After his first week at school, the author ________.

A. was still not accustomed to the schedule

B. gradually adjusted himself to the new school

C. found high school not so challenging as he had imagined

D. ran for monitor of his class against three other students

4.According to the passage, the secret of the author's success lies mainly in ________.

A. making more friends

B. getting more A's at school

C. being who he really is

D. joining in out-of-class activities
