Tom was a little boy from a town and he would spend the holiday on a farm. He had never been to a farm ago, and this was the first time in his life that he has seen such animals as goats and sheeps, pigs and cows. The first morning he got up almost before daylight to watch the farmer milk the cows. Then he wanted to help feed the other animals. The farmer gave him a lamb, told Tom he must take good care of it, as its mother had been died. Very soon the lamb will follow Tom all over the farm. Tom also learnt to feed chickens but collect the eggs. Every day he enjoyed him very much with the animals. At last the day came which he had to go back home. That was a very sadly day for him, as he felt sorry to say goodbye to all the animals on the farm.

How old is “old” ? 1.. Two hundred years ago, you were old at 35. That was the average life then. At the turn of this century, as medical knowledge advanced, the average life span(长度) increased to 45. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking forward to many more active years.

So, how old is old? The answer is one you’ve heard many times, from all sorts of people. “You are as old (or young) as you feel!” The calendar(日历) simply tells you how many years you have lived. 2.

Once an unknown author wrote ,“3. . Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by giving up their goals.”

4.. Alice Brophy, when she was with the New York City commission for the Aging, said, “It upsets me when people say, ‘Gee, you look young for your age!’ What does that mean? Is there some model that you’re supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80”

There are many wrong ideas about aging.5.. Here are some of the more common ones. For example, most older people are in poor health, or older people are unable to change.

A. It’s extremely terrible to be grown old.

B. Youth is not a time of life but it is a state of mind.

C. These ideas stereotype(固化) people on the basis of age.

D. Old is a point of view.

E. Older people are stubborn, unable to change.

F. The answer has changed over the years.

G. Your body tells you how well you’ve lived.

Nearly 300 miles long, up to 18 miles across and 4000 vertical(垂直的) feet down, the 8th new wonder: the splendid Grand Canyon(峡谷).

Viewing its glory, President Theodore Roosevelt called the Grand Canyon "a natural wonder, absolutely unparalleled(无比的)throughout the rest of the world". He urged Americans to preserve what he described as the "wonderful greatness, the nobleness, the great loneliness and the beauty of the canyon". More than a hundred years later, it's still easy to see why almost 5 million annual visitors call the Grand Canyon a wonder.

The canyon stretches as far as the eye can see. Some 5 or 6 million years ago, the Colorado River rushed through this land, carving out the massive canyon we see today, exposing even older layers of rock previously buried. Geologists say some are 2,000 million years old. Native Americans were the first people to make these rocky walls as their homes about 12,000 years ago.

Today the Hualapi and Havasupai Indians live deep in the canyon, balancing age-old traditions with modernity. There are no roads to this village; mules carry the mail here. But at the same time, the tribes are designing a skywalk that promises an excellent view over the canyon early next year. The bald eagle, wild and endangered American icon is another longtime resident of the Grand Canyon.

A. the Nile River B. the Colorado River

The Ministry of Construction has released the names of the first group of 20 national parks, including 9 Suzhou classical gardens: Zhuozheng Garden, Liu Garden, Wangshi Garden, Huanxiu Villa, Lion Grove, Yipu Garden, Ou Garden, Tuisi Garden and Canglang Pavilion.

National parks refer to the famous city parks and gardens. The earliest classical gardens in Suzhou can date back to the Song Dynasty. However, the gardens impress their visitors not only with their age-old history but also with their delicate scenes, particularly Canglang Pavilion, Zhuozheng Garden, Lion Grove and Liu Garden, the most famous four that represent different styles of dynasties of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing.

In 1978, an imitation(仿造物) of a Suzhou classical garden was set up by Chen Congzhou (the author of the book Suzhou Classical Gardens) in the City Museum of Art in New York, US, which was the first time ever to directly introduce Chinese ancient architecture to Westerners.

It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ihan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the strange over spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.

At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town!

We ended up writing our IOU's with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of work in a variety of ways if he needs it.

I think the idea isn't that the trade is "equal" so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.

We don't buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don't give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other's company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible.

Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.

1.Ilan did not take any money that day in order to_________.

A. have a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip

B. buy nothing that day to save some money

C. make people aware of their over spending

D. trade for something of equal value in return

2.For the meal, the author finally offered Ilan ________.

A. some promises B. a book

C. some paintings D. work in different ways

3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “transaction”?

A. transport B. trade

C. meal D. giving

4.What is the author’s attitude to Buy Nothing Day?

A. Disagreeable B. Meaningless.

C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.

Habits to Be a Highly Effective Student

Some students are able to get straight A’s and at the same time serve as the president of three clubs. However, some students struggle to keep their GPA (Grade-Point Average) above a 3.0. 1.Although it’s true that everyone’s IQ is different, good study habits are very important. Here are several habits you should adopt to get good grades.

2. If you haven’t had a planner (规划薄), get one. Many people use their computers and smartphones to make a schedule. The problem with that approach is that they are major distractions. Instead, get an old-fashioned paper and pen planner.

Create a weekly schedule. 3. Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to school work. That way you know exactly how much you can accomplish each day.

Take frequent, short breaks. Taking a break from studying for 15 minutes every hour will help keep you refreshed. 4. If you don’t take a break, you may find yourself daydreaming or even falling asleep. Take some time for some water, a snack or a quick chat with a friend.

Take care of yourself. During final exam week, it is common for students to fall behind on sleep and meals. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep and have regular meals. Studying while hungry or sleepy is ineffective and will slow you down in the long run. Also try to make time for friends and family. 5.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.

It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ because ‘Jones’ is a very common name in the United States. ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are ‘Jonses’ in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

1.Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they _____.

A. want to be as rich as their neighbors

B. want others to know or to think that they are rich

C. don’t want others to know they are rich

D. want to be happy

A. live outside New York City B. live in New York city

C. live in apartments D. have many neighbors

3.Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is _____.

A. an important name B. a popular name in the United States

C. his neighbor’s name D. not a good name

4.According to the writer, it is _____ to keep up with the Joneses.

A. correct B. interesting

C. impossible D. good

Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard’s announcements. Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!

Why was so much attention being paid to this message? As best I can recall, the guard said something along these lines, “Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you’ll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all’s right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you’re going. Thanks for catching my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”

Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guard’s excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found the young guard and said “Were you the guard on the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith?” The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yyyyes.” “Well, I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.” I said.

There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that accumulate from thanking people for something they’ve done, particularly when it’s not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home?
