Please help me! I am a fat teenager. My classmates laugh at me a lot. I don't do sport, and my favourite meal is a hamburger, chips and soft drinks. Is this really such a problem? I don't enjoy exercise; it makes me tired. Also, I' m hungry all the time and love to eat fast food. What should I do? Do you think I should take some weight- -loss pills? What about exercise and food? Please don't tell me to stop eating!

When Jack Buzzi looked out the window of his parents' home during the worst of the storm, he saw something terrible: his neighbor's house was floating on the water. Part of the top floor had broken off, and the rest of the house was shaking. At the same time, Buzzi was on the phone with his friend Jack Ward, whose sister Kathey Ward, 60, owned the house. The men feared that she was in danger.

Buzzi hung up the phone, put on boots and a raincoat, took two life jackets and went outside. Then he waded (跋涉) through deep water toward Kathey's house. He yelled at Kathey, but she didn't respond.

“The roof had fallen down,” Buzzi says. “I thought she was dead.”

He returned home and called Jack again. Jack told him he had finally reached his sister on the phone. She was trapped (困住) but uninjured. Buzzi headed back into the storm and finally found her on the second floor of her home. She was surprisingly calm.

“I knew you would come so I didn't worry,” Kathey said. She'd been sitting in the only room of the house that didn't break off. Buzzi gave her a life jacket and guided her through the water to his house.

The next morning, Buzzi and Kathey used a boat to rescue Kathey's sister Mary Ward and Mary's boyfriend, who'd been trapped in Mary's flooded house.

Returning back, Buzzi saw the local carpenter Nick Spino, who had spent the night on his neighbor's roof.

Despite a flooded basement (地下室), Buzzi let six neighbors stay with him until they left five days later.

“It's human nature, right?” he says. “We protect each other.”

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have lots of friends at school. However, he wasn't sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help. The old man told him, “I just have what you exactly need, and it's in the attic (阁楼).Wait here a minute.” Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It's a very special chair. It's rather tricky to sit on because it's invisible (无形的),but if you take it to school and you try to sit on it. you'll be able to tell who your real friends are.” Grandpa said.

Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not, so he took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. “Nobody move! You're about to see something amazing.”

Then Mario tried to sit on the chair. But he missed and fell down onto his back. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. Mario wouldn't be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground…until, suddenly, he tried again and didn't fall. This time he sat, hovering(悬浮) in mid-air…

Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana—three of his best friends, holding him up, so he wouldn't fall down. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends had done nothing but make fun of him, enjoying his every fall.

Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandfather had so cleverly thought of a way to show him that true friends are those who care for us, and not just any acquaintance(熟人) who happens to be passing by. Even less would a friend be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.

1.Why did Mario turn to his grandpa for help?

A.He couldn't make any friends. B.He didn't get along with his schoolmates.

C.He didn't like his school. D.He couldn't find out who his true friends were.

2.Why was Mario able to hover in the mid-air?

A.Because he managed to sit on the invisible chair finally.

B.Because his three friends held him up with their hands.

C.Because his classmates gave him a chair to sit on.

D.Because he could see the magic chair clearly.

3.Who are real friends according to the text?

A.Those who laugh with us.

B.Those who take joy in our misfortunes.

C.Those who care about us when we are in trouble.

D.Those who care for us when we are popular at school.

4.How did Mario most probably feel in the end of the text?

A.Happy. B.Unconcerned.

C.Upset. D.Uncomfortable.

Dear Terry,

Glad to receive your last letter! I was willing to tell you what customs you should pay attention when visiting a friend. Here is some tips.

First of all, bear in mind that you have better arrive punctually or some time earlier than the appointing time. This is of great significant to show your politeness. But you may as well bring an appropriate gift, like some fruits. Above all, you should mind your table manner. For instance, never speak with your mouth full of food, that may be similar to your own customs.

In brief, do as the Chinese do when in China. I do hope you will have a great fun at your friend's home.

Many people can't imagine life without dogs. 1.. However, dogs and people are very different animals. To make the most of your relationship with your dog, you need to teach her some important skills. Here are three essential principles to keep in mind while teaching.

2..

One of the most frequent complaints of pet parents is that their dogs "just won't listen". But put yourself in your dog's shoes for a moment. If someone was constantly speaking in a foreign language how long would you pay attention? Probably not for very long because you simply couldn't understand what the foreign speaker was trying to communicate. Thus, you need to understand how.

If you like the behavior, reward it.

Some training methods use punishment, like scolding, to discourage dogs from doing everything except what you want them to do. 3.. While both strategies can work, the latter is usually the more effective approach, and it's also much more enjoyable for you and your dog.

Control consequences effectively

As you teach your dog dos and don'ts, bear the following two guideline in mind;

Consequences must be immediate. Dogs live in the present. Unlike us, they can't make connections between events and experiences that are separated in time. For your dog to connect something she does with the consequences of that behavior, the consequences must be immediate 4., you have to catch her messing around in the kitchen and punish her on the spot.

5.. When training your dog, you should respond the same way to things she does every time she does them. For example, if you sometimes touch your dog when she jumps up to greet you but sometimes yell at her instead, she'll definitely get confused. How can she know when it's okay to jump up and when it's not?

A.Consequences must be consistent

B.Understand how your dog learns

C.If you want to keep your dog safe

D.If you want to discourage your dog from doing something

E.We adore them for their loyalty, unconditional affection, and passion for life

F.Training your dog well will improve your life and hers, enhancing the bond

G.Other methods mainly focus on teaching dogs what you want them to do

More than a billion people around the world have smartphones, almost all of which come with avigation (导航) apps such as Google or Apple Maps. This raises the questions we meet with any technology: What skills are we losing? What abilities are we gaining?

Talking with people who're good at finding their way around or using paper maps, I often hear lots of frustration with digital maps. North/South direction gets messed up, and you can see only a small section at a time.

But consider what digital navigation aids have meant for someone like me. Despite being a frequent traveler, I'm so terrible at finding my way that I still use Google Maps every day in the small town where I have lived for many years. What looks like an imperfect product to some has been a significant expansion of my own abilities.

Part of the problem is that reading paper maps requires specific skills. There is nothing natural about them. In many developed nations, including the U. S., one expects street names and house numbers to be meaningful references, and instructions such as "go north for three blocks and then west" make sense. In Istanbul, in contrast, where I grew up, none of those hold true. For one thing, the locals rarely use street names. Why bother when a government or a military group might change them again? Besides, the city is full of winding, ancient alleys that meet newer avenues at many angles. Instructions as simple as “go north" would require a helicopter or a bulldozer (推士机).

Let's come back to my original questions. While we often lose some skills after leaving the work to technology, it may also allow us to expand our abilities. Consider the calculator: I don't doubt that our arithmetic skills might have dropped a bit as the little machines became common, but calculations that were once boring and tricky are now much more straightforward and one can certainly do more complex calculations more confidently.

1.What is the drawback of digital maps?

A.They aren't connected to smartphones.

B.They cost too much to download.

C.They leave some users frustrated.

D.They mix up the south and the north.

2.What's the author’s attitude toward digital maps?

A.Doubtful B.Supportive

C.ambiguous D.Uncaring.

3.What's the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.The differences between Istanbul and the U. S.

B.The miserable life of people in Istanbul.

C.The necessity of asking local people in Istanbul.

D.The ancient alleys and new avenues in Istanbul.

4.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?

A.When technology closes a door, it opens one as well.

B.Two paper maps are better than a digital one.

C.Technology is not developed in a day.

D.No calculators, no digital maps.
