If you live in Shanghai, you might have taken a “lesson” in sorting (分类) garbage, as the city introduced new garbage-sorting regulations on July 1, 2019.

As China’s first city to carry out strict regulations(规则) on garbage sorting and recycling, Shanghai requires its residents to sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. If people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.

Since the regulation took effect, the amount of total daily waste in Shanghai has been reduced by an average of 15,500 tons, dropping 26 percent from the end of 2018, while the average daily weight of recyclables hits 4,500 tons, five times higher than the end of 2018, according to the Shanghai Landscaping and City Appearance Administrative Bureau.

The city also rebuilt 21,000 waste-sorting stations and more than 40,000 waste bins have been updated. The city’s waste collection and transportation system is complete, according to the bureau.

“Proper waste sorting is to protect the environment and save natural resources,” said Deng Jianping, director of the bureau. “Led by the central government, Shanghai is making efforts to develop long-term solutions to garbage management.”

However, there have also been some problems. Some people complained that it is difficult to deal with wet garbage, as they are asked to remove wet garbage from its bag when dumping (倾倒). According to the sorting rules, the wet garbage must go in the wet waste bin and the bag must go in the dry waste bin.

This separation is necessary, as it ensures that the wet garbage will decompose (分解) properly and become useful organic (有机的) waste, the bureau said.

Plastic bags can affect this process. Some people in Shanghai are instead using paper bags that can biodegrade(生物降解)or plastic containers that can be washed and reused, according to Xinhua.

1.When did the new garbage-sorting regulations come into effect in Shanghai?(不多于4个单词)

2.According to the passage, people in Shanghai are asked to sort their garbage into four categories, and what are they?(不多于8个单词)

3.Why should we sort garbage? (不多于11个单词)

4.How do people deal with wet garbage when dumping? (不多于7个单词)

In the West, people are taught to wear masks only when they get sick. Masks are seen as a tool to protect sick people and prevent the disease from spreading, so healthy people don’t need to wear them. Therefore, during the novel coronavirus outbreak, overseas Chinese students said that they would be “stared at like a virus spreader” if they go out with a mask. According to a survey done by Global Times among some European and American people, wearing a mask in public can make them feel “worried”, “shy”, and “afraid of being looked at differently.”

But as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow around the world, many people in the West are changing their attitudes. In the US, for example, the need for masks is very high now. The US surgeon general (卫生局局长) has been asking people to avoid hoarding too many masks, as they are more needed in hospitals than by the general public.

However, in Asian countries like China and Japan, there has been a long tradition of mask-wearing. In China, for example, when doctor Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask during the pneumonic plague (肺鼠疫) in 1910, the mask became a symbol of China’s position as a modern, scientific nation, according to Scottish medical anthropologist (人类学家) Christos Lynteris. The 2003 SARS epidemic led to the wide use of masks as a form of anti-viral (抗病毒的) protection in China and elsewhere in East Asia.

In Japan, wearing masks has long been seen as a manner to reassure (使安心) others when one catches a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion accessories (配饰), with different colors and patterns to match their clothes. Wearing masks is also a way to “hide” for young women when they don’t have their makeup (化妆) on.

In more collectivist (集体主义的) cultures in Asia, wearing masks might also be a symbol of solidarity (团结) during the outbreak, according to Lynteris. People wear masks “to show that they want to stick together” in the face of danger, Lynteris wrote.

1.Why don’t healthy people in the West wear masks?

A.They don’t think masks can prevent disease.

B.Only medical workers need to wear masks.

C.They think masks are for sick people to wear.

D.Wearing a mask looks funny.

2.What does the underlined word “hoarding” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.the outbreak of SARS in 2003

B.the pneumonic plague in 1910

C.Christos Lynteris wore one publicly

D.the invention of the modern medical mask

4.The main idea of the passage is_________.

A.proving the importance of wearing masks during an epidemic

B.showing opinions about masks between different countries

C.explaining why Westerners don’t wear masks

D.introducing the history of wearing masks

Guan Moye, better known as Mo Yan, is a Chinese novelist and short story writer. He has been referred to by Donald Morrison of U.S. news magazine, TIME, as “one of the most famous and widely pirated(盗版)of all Chinese writers”. He is best known to Western readers for Red Sorghum Clan(红高粱家族), which was later adapted for the film, Red Sorghum. In 2012, Mo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Mo Yan was born in Gaomi County, Shandong Province. He was 11 years old when the Cultural Revolution started, at which time he left school to work as a farmer. At the age of 18, he began to work at a factory. During this period, his access to literature was largely limited to novels.

At the close of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, Mo joined the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and began writing. During this period, the works of Chinese literature, as well as translations of foreign authors such as William Faulkner, made an impact on his works. In 1984, he received a literary award from the PLA Magazine, and at the same year he began attending the Military Art Academy, where he first used the pen name of Mo Yan. “Mo Yan” means “don’t speak” in Chinese. He explained that the name came from a warning from his father and mother about not saying what he thought when he was outside. It also related to the subject matter of his writings.

Mo’s first novel was Falling Rain on a Spring Night, published in 1981. Several of his novels were translated into English by Howard Goldblatt, professor of East Asian languages and literature, at the University of Notre Dame. He published his first novella(中篇小说), A Transparent Radish, in 1984, and released Red Sorghum Clan in 1986, making him a nationally recognized novelist. Five years later, he obtained a Master’s degree in literature from Beijing Normal University.

First impression is very important.1.Either consciously or unconsciously, we make judgments about the characters and abilities of others based on first impressions. And here are some tips on how to make a good first impression.

Be confident in who you are. Whether it is a formal function or an informal get-together, the key is to be confident in yourself. Having confidence is a very attractive character. You don't need to be the smartest or the most physically appealing person to be confident about yourself.2.

Be calm. When other people see how calm you are in any situation, they will look forward to depending on you.3.When others see the ease with which you handle yourself, they will also let go off their anxieties regarding meeting someone new for the first time.

Be yourself. Don't pretend to be someone you're not.4.Be honest. If somebody finds out you have been presenting yourself falsely, they can feel hurt and it might be hard for them to forgive you.

Develop approachable and friendly body language.5.If you are planning to approach the other person first, walk over confidently and introduce yourself with a firm handshake. The gesture of taking the first step will assure(使确信)the person that you are interested in them and the smiling face will signal your friendly nature.

A.A smile goes a long way, so be kind and smile.

B.Your calmness will assure them of your abilities.

C.You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

D.Never lie to anybody about what you think and care about.

E.Don't shake hands with persons who find body contact uncomfortable.

F.Just be cautious not to be overconfident or abrupt, which can turn people off.

G.The belief that you're good enough makes you appear more attractive to the people around you.

Examining the classroom practices of National Teacher of the Year winners and finalists, the study, by Michigan State University scholars, suggests successful educators aren't afraid to push the boundaries by adding real world, cross-disciplinary(跨学科的)themes into their lessons.

The study is one of the first in depth investigations(调查)of how teachers use creativity in the classroom. "The best teachers are taking their own creative interests—from rap music to cooking to kickboxing—and are finding ways to include these into the curriculum," said Danah Henriksen, lead author of the study. "They're bringing together different subject matters and finding areas of connections so students can learn both in interesting ways."

America's test-driven educational policy, Henriksen argues, has prevented creativity in teaching and learning. Many teachers today struggle to balance testing and responsibility to act flexibly and independently in their classrooms. "I think that there's a lot of fear," one of the award-winning teachers says in the study." And when teachers are teaching in fear, they take few risks, for they have to consider exams and academic performance."

The findings have major meanings for teaching and learning. The study' s main recommendations are as follows: Teachers' unique creative interests should be brought into classroom lessons. Teacher education programs and professional development courses should include a focus on real world. Administrators and policymakers should support opportunities for teachers to take creative risks in their work.

If we want teachers to be creative, we need to provide them with opportunities to bring those outside interests into their professional life," said Mishra, study co-author," The point is to find what works for you. Finally, we teach who we are. That's the most powerful finding."

1.According to the study, what are successful teachers like?

A.They take creative risks to help students learn.

B.They tend to lead students to outdoor activities.

C.They encourage students to take more risks in life.

D.They focus on developing students' academic performance.

2.Many teachers are teaching in fear because           .

A.the students are always troublesome

B.they are afraid to make mistakes in teaching

C.administrators and policymakers don't support them

D.the American educational policy is focused on test

3.What may be the best title for the text?

A.America's test-driven educational system

B.How teachers use creativity in the classroom

C.A great finding: best teachers are creative

D.What are the major meanings for teaching

Since November last year, cyclists in the northern Dutch town, Krommenie, have been part of a revolutionary experiment—a length of 70 meters of the town's main bikeway has been resurfaced with a layer of glass tiles treated with a non-slip coating. The panels, which are laid on a bed of concrete, are only one centimetre thick, but it's what's inside the glass that makes them truly impressive—each individual section contains a solar cell and together they form one long energy producing net work.

There were a number of reasons to start with a bike path. One is that when you start an innovation like this you want a step that is doable, but still guarantees that things are pretty safe for road users. In a bike path, the loads are not too heavy, and the requirements are not too severe. The Krommenie experiment has four goals. One is to see how it performs technically and what the energy production is. The second goal is to know what the satisfaction of the users is; do they have any kind of discomfort or negative perception? And the last thing, is to see if the road managers are comfortable with this type of road which is completely new.

More than 150 ,000 cyclists have used the bike path in the first six months of its operation and the trial has met with no serious problems, even during recent testing using heavyweight vehicles. Some wear and tear on the non-slip coating was expected and has been repaired.

Despite the trial's promise, there is still one major problem to deal with—the initial cost of road construction using the solar panels is higher than it is for standard forms of surfacing. But the researchers predict that will come down, when the technology enters mass production.

1.What does the underlined word " panels" in the first paragraph refer to?

A.Bikeways. B.Glass tiles.

C.Solar cells. D.Non- slip coatings.

2.Why was the experiment started with a bike path?

A.It is very easy to build. B.It is cheap and light.

C.It is frequently used. D.It is workable and safe.

3.What does the author think of the future of solar panel road?

A.Promising. B.Expensive.

C.Unnecessary. D.Impractical.

4.What can we infer about the solar panel road?

A.Its trial was a great success with no problems.

B.It has no limit to the weight of heavy vehicles.

C.It cannot be put into regular use at the moment.

D.Its management will be difficult and expensive.

While out hunting for ducks near Perry Lake, Kansas, Jake Atkins and his friend accidentally got trapped in sinking mud, which they unknowingly walked right into.

"We were walking pretty much side-by-side, and we both sank to knee depth in the mud and we tried to wiggle(扭动)ourselves out and it ended up being waist deep," Atkins said. They realized that if they struggled any more, they would only sink further, so Atkins called 911 and they tried to stay as still as possible until help arrived.

Atkins' dog, Otis, waited nearby but jumped to action when firefighters failed to save his owner. "If they'd walked out, they would've sunk too. So there was no way for them to get rope to us. So when those firefighters popped out of the bushes, I said just tie the rope onto Otis," Atkins said.

Otis bravely walked out onto the sinking mud three times to rescue the gear, Atkins friend, and finally Atkins. By the final trip, Otis was crying from exhaustion(精疲力竭)but refused to rest until Atkins was safe. " He followed me as they were pulling me. He kind of just was walking right beside me as they were pulling me in on my back. It was kind of funny," Atkins said.

Watch the entire video below to see what this dog did to save his owner from sinking mud.

Located at its foot is Falknästet, a remarkable one-room hotel—with a round bed hanging from the ceiling and panorama(全景)windows offering a front-row sunset view. Works well for wedding nights.

Fabriken Furillen

Fabriken Furillen is a creation of concrete and hardwood in the middle of an old limestone quarry(石灰菜市场). The buildings reflect the rough industrial setting, yet act as comfortable shelters from it. Besides, this hotel's remote location on the island of Gotland's Furillen peninsula makes for a special stay.

Salt & Sill

Salt & Sill is a hotel close to the sea. Six two-storey houses combine to make a floating hotel steeped in Nordic minimalist design. The hotel is located on the small fishing island of Klädesholmen, which is only a 45-minute drive north of Gothenburg.

Utter Inn

In Lake Mälaren, outside Västerås, floats a lone red cottage. It marks the entrance to Utter Inn, an underwater hotel. Above water you'll find cooking equipment. Below the surface is the bedroom—with panorama windows to the underwater world. Built as an art project by Mikael Genberg, Utter Inn is hugely popular during its season, April—October.

Last summer over 12,000 fans were at Wembley Arena in London, shouting and cheering. Thousands more were watching online. 1. It was e-sports, or competitive computer gaming.

Millions of people in the UK play computer games for fun. Some of them have become professional gamers, playing games as their full-time job. 2. They practice for ten or more hours a day, five or six days a week. They do exercises like typing something and trying to type it faster and faster. They also study videos of other players and plan ways to beat them.

3. Are players athletes? Some say no. E-sports players don’t need to run, jump, throw or do big physical actions. At the moment, the UK government classifies e-sports as kinds of games, not as sports.

But others say yes: e-sports are sports. Players do need some physical skills, especially hand-eye coordination, reflexes, accuracy and timing. If darts, snooker and shooting are classified as sports, then perhaps e-sports should be too.

4. And they will be an official medal sport in the Asian Games starting from 2022. Next step: the Olympics?

For many e-sports fans and players, though, the most important thing is that e-sports are growing in popularity and importance. 5.

A.But are e-sports really sports?

B.All like playing computer games.

C.It’s not easy being a professional gamer, though.

D.But this wasn’t a football, basketball or tennis match.

E.It is certain that e-sports will come into the 2024 Olympics.

F.In fact, China and South Korea do classify e-sports as sports.

G.If e-sports are not as important as sports now, they definitely will be in the near future.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Other than flying and communicating with someone from his mind (which, let’s be honest, would probably actually be awful), breathing underwater is one of the favorites. You can hang out with Aquaman and Ursula, and when the end of the world comes and we’re all living under water, you’ll be fine.

With this in mind, a student at the Royal College of Art, London has designed a 3D-printed amphibious garment called AMPHIBIO — essentially a set of gills() — for this very purpose.

According to Jun Kamei, a biomimicry designer and materials scientist, it is "for a future where humankind lives in the water".

With the world set for a global temperature increase of 3.2°C (5.7°F) by 2100, rising sea levels are a very real threat to large coastal cities, potentially affecting up to 2 billion people — or 26 percent of the current global population.

Kamei’s little device uses a specially designed porous(多孔的) material that fills oxygen again in the water and releases carbon dioxide. It is inspired by water-diving insects that create their own little scuba diving set by creating a protective bubble of air around their body thanks to their water repellent(防水的) skin.

The technology is easily 3D-printable too, which will be great when we need them together. These "gills" could replace heavy and clumsy scuba equipment, making it more similar to free diving but for longer. This could have immediate applications for underwater rescue plans — the 12 boys rescued by divers from a flooded cave in Thailand, for example, where it took weeks to work out how to get the boys and the vital breathing equipment through those narrow tunnels.

So far, the tech has only been tested as a working prototype, not actually on humans, so the dream may have to be on hold for now. And scaling up and testing on humans is Kamei’s next plan. This may sound unbelievable, but Kamei insists he has a much more optimistic vision of the future.

1.What can be inferred about Aquaman and Ursula?

A. They can read minds.

B. They can breathe underwater.

C. They often cause huge disasters.

D. They can’t live underwater.

2.What can we learn about AMPHIBIO?

A. It can produce oxygen in the water.

B. Its user can communicate with others from their mind.

C. It is the unique useful tool against the threat of rising sea levels.

D. The designer drew his inspiration from a certain natural species.

3.Why did the author mentioned the rescue of the boys in Thailand?

A. To present the success of the new device.

B. To compare the new device with the old one.

C. To prove the advantage of the new device.

D. To show the new device is easily 3D-printable.

4.What is the author’s attitude to the future of the new design?

A. Objective. B. indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.

Who cares if people think wrongly that the internet has had more important influences than the washing machine? Why does it matter that people are more impressed by the most recent changes?

It would not matter if these misjudgments were just a matter of people’s opinions. However, they have real impacts, as they result in misguided use of scarce resources.

The fascination with the ICT(Information and Communication Technology) revolution, represented by the internet, has made some rich countries wrongly conclude that making things is so “yesterday” that they should try to live on ideas. This belief in “post-industrial society” has led those countries to neglect their manufacturing sector(制造业), with negative consequences for their economies.

Even more worryingly, the fascination with the internet by people in rich countries has moved the international community to worry about the “digital divide” between the rich countries and the poor countries. This has led companies and individuals to donate money to developing countries to buy computer equipment and internet facilities. The question, however, is whether this is what the developing countries need the most. Perhaps giving money for those less fashionable things such as digging wells, extending electricity networks and making more affordable washing machines would have improved people’s lives more than giving every child a laptop computer or setting up internet centres in rural villages, I am not saying that those things are necessarily more important, but many donators have rushed into fancy programmes without carefully assessing the relative long-term costs and benefits of alternative uses of their money.

In yet another example, a fascination with the new has led people to believe that the recent changes in the technologies of communications and transportation are so revolutionary that now we live in a “borderless world”. As a result, in the last twenty years or so, many people have come to believe that whatever change is happening today is the result of great technological progress, going against which will be like trying to turn the clock back. Believing in such a world, many governments have put an end to some of the very necessary regulations on cross-border flows of capital, labour and goods, with poor results.

Understanding technological trends is very important for correctly designing economic policies, both at the national and the international levels, and for making the right career choices at the individual level. However, our fascination with the latest, and our under valuation of what has already become common, can, and has, led us in all sorts of wrong directions.

1.Misjudgments on the influences of new technology can lead to ________.

A.a lack of confidence in technology

B.a slow progress in technology

C.a conflict of public opinions

D.a waste of limited resources

2.The example in Paragraph 4 suggests that donators should ________.

A.take people’s essential needs into account

B.make their programmes attractive to people

C.ensure that each child gets financial support

D.provide more affordable internet facilities

3.What has led many governments to remove necessary regulations?

A.Neglecting the impacts of technological advances.

B.Believing that the world has become borderless.

C.Ignoring the power of economic development.

D.Over-emphasizing the role of international communication.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A.People should be encouraged to make more donations.

B.Traditional technology still has a place nowadays.

C.Making right career choices is crucial to personal success.

D.Economic policies should follow technological trends.

We’ve all had cases where we’ve waited just a bit too long to pay an electric bill or  speeding ticket. But one man, from California by reasonable assumptionwho goes by “Dave”recently took procrastination (拖延) one step further, by paying a parking ticket almost a half-century after it was given.

In December 2018, the Minersville Police Department in Pennsylvania received a letter in the mail. Whoever wrote the letter decided it was best to keep his name somewhat unknownso he put the return address as “Wayward RoadAnytown California” under the name “Feeling guilty”.

When the officers opened the envelopethey found a brief letter, along with a $5 bill, and a parking ticket dating all the way back to 1974. The note read“Dear PDI've been carrying this ticket around for 40 plus years always intending to pay. Forgive me if I don't give you my info. With respectDave.”

Even though the initial parking ticket was only for $2, “Dave” must have felt awfully guilty because he left 150 percentor $3, in interest.

Michael Combs, the Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department, stated in an interview that the same ticket would cost about $20 if it were given today. Combs went on to share that the original ticket from 1974 was given to a vehicle that had an Ohio license plate.

Because there was no system for tracking tickets given to out-of-state cars back then“Dave” could have gotten away with never paying the $2 fine. But apparentlyguilt got the best of himand he decided to finally cough up the money more than 40 years past its due date.

1.How much do we know about “Dave”

A. He lives in Wayward RoadAnytown California.

B. His car probably came from Ohio at that time.

C. The police are trying to find out more about him.

D. “Dave” is of course the man’s real name indeed.

2.Why didn’t “Dave” pay for the parking ticket until recently?

A. He completely forgot about it in the past 44 years.

B. He didn’t find it until almost half a century later.

C. He didn’t pay for it just because of procrastination.

D. He failed to find out who he should pay the money to.

3.What drove “Dave” to pay for the parking ticket at last?

A. A strong sense of guilt.

B. Fear of being tracked by the police.

C. Worry about being fined more.

D. Sudden change of his financial situation.

4.Which of the following can be the best title?

A. Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department Shares a Story

B. Parking Ticket Carried Around for Almost Half a Century from Ohio

C. Unusual Letter Comes from Wayward Road, Anytown California

D. Mysterious Procrastinator Finally Pays 44-Year-Old Parking Ticket

People always say that life can 't go on good all the time, because we will meet all kinds of difficulty. When we are students, we want to get improving and get high marks in the exams. When we graduate and find the job, we need to finish all the tasks what are given to us on time. Even after retiring, we still come across something difficult in our life. Although life is difficult, we should get used to them. When we face with the difficult time, we ought consider it as a test for us. When we get through it, we will gain value experience. The pleasure we get make us proud.
