After the fire, what now?

Bishop Patrick Chauvet, Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院)’s manager, admitted that the famous building would close for “five to six years” as he spoke with local business owners Wednesday. He added that it was unclear what the church’s 67 employees would be doing in the future. French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday that he wanted the church rebuilt in five years.

What are the new rules?

While tourists can’t go inside the site itself, the area still may prove popular to those paying their respects. Visitors are welcome to write messages of support in both the main and local city halls.

The island that houses the church has been closed and the people there have been evacuated since the fire. Paris businessmen who depend on Notre Dame tourism are worried about the church’s future as well as their own.

It’s known that spring is a busy time for tourists in Paris. The travel company recommends people visit other places, like the Basilique Saint-Denis, the Sacre-Coeur and so on. Those who tend to observe church services during Holy Week are advised to go to Saint-Eustache.

Looking ahead to rebuilding

It seems rebuilding can begin, since firefighters put out the fire early Tuesday, more than 12 hours after nearly 400 firefighters had battled the flames that changed the city’s skyline. Two policemen and one firefighter were not badly injured, according to the Paris Fire Service.

A large campaign to raise money already is underway to rebuild the church. Up to Wednesday, donations came to $1 billion.

When I think about ducks. I picture my mother's pets. She saved Lucy and Fran from a very wet area when I was 16 years old. The little ducks were weak and sick. My mother helped them to get healthy.

Lucy and Fran lived in a large box in the garage. They became family pets. They were members of our family. Lucy followed me around. She quacked and quacked. She liked attention.

My brother Tim read everything he could find about ducks. He learned to care for our pets. He made sure that the box in the garage was fit for our pets. It had a heat lamp and a feeder. He gave them water and fresh straw each day. What a hit! Lucy and Fran loved their house. They quacked to say, “Thank you!”

On a rainy morning, Lucy walked near me to the mailbox. She walked so close that we knocked each other. I fell into a big mud hole. All the letters from the mailbox got wet. They were covered with muddy, brown water

What's worse. Tim watched from the window. When I got back into the house, he was on the kitchen floor holding the sides of his stomach. He laughed there.

I stomped my feet and threw up my arms. My mom calmly listened to me shout. “It's okay, honey. If you prefer to you can trade beds with the ducks!” she comforted.

Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

Tuesday, March 27th

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

Friday, March 30th

Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life--no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back next year.

Who made the ABC song? Some people say a man named Charles Bradlee made the song. He was the first person to say he owned it. That was in 1834. Bradlee called the song “The Schoolmaster”. A schoolmaster is an old name for a teacher. No one knows where it came from. But we do have some clues.

Sounds Like Another Song

The ABC song sounds the same as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. It has the same tune, or music. It sounds like “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, too. Try singing each song. Sing them in a row. You can hear for yourself! The tune was first printed in 1761. It didn’t have any words. No one knows who wrote it. Later, a woman wrote the words for “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. Her name was Jane Taylor. She lived in England. She wrote the words in 1806. Mozart was a very famous composer. He wrote a piece of music in 1785. It sounds a lot like the ABC song!

We Learn Better From Songs

When the ABC song first became popular, few children went to school. Most people did not learn how to read. They did not learn how to write, either. As time went on, this changed. More people needed to know how to read and write. More children started learning the ABC song. It helped them remember the letters.

Why do we sing the ABC song? We could just read it quietly. Or we could say it without singing. Why is the song partly important? The answer is related to how we learn. Children have always leaned from grown-ups. But 200 year ago, most people couldn’t read or write. Children had to remember things. They could not write down what they learned. They could not read about it later. So it was important to remember. Songs helped people remember. People sang songs that told stories. They taught their children what they knew through songs.

So, no none really knows who made the ABC song. We do know that this song is popular today. Most children who learn to speak English will sing it. Then they will remember their letters!

1.How is the passage mainly developed?

A.By comparing. B.By listing facts.

Using a mobile phone before going to bed can damage your health, according to a major study.

It says that radiation from the mobile phone can cause insomnia(失眠症) and headaches as well as cutting the time spent in deep sleep. Failing to get enough sleep can lead to depression, lack of concentration and personality changes. In teenagers and young children, lack of sleep can result in attention disorders and poor grades.

The research showed that using mobile phones before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them.

Deep sleep is important as it is the time when the body rejuvenates(更新) cells and repairs damage suffered during the day. Scientists found that using mobile phones an hour before sleep affects it. In the study scientists examined the sleep patterns of 36 women and 35 men aged 18 to 45. Some were exposed to radiation that is similar to what a person receives when using a mobile phone. The others received none. The results are as follows: The first group took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep and spent less time in the deepest one. However, the second group was opposite.

The findings will shock many parents. Many parents are always worried about their children’s health. But they didn’t have a better way to persuade them not to use a mobile phone.

1.The passage mainly tells us that ________.

A. deep sleep is good for your health

B. using a mobile phone before sleep can damage your health

C. different people have different sleep patterns

D. long sleep can renew cells

2.The underlined word “ it”refers to ________.

A. people’s body    B. deep sleep

C. a sleep pattern    D. a day

3.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Deep sleep is a good time for the body to repair damage suffered during the day

B. The study examined the sleep patterns of about 70 people.

C. The findings shocked many teachers and teenagers.

D. Using mobile phones before bed causes people to take longer time to enter the deep sleep.

4.We can infer from the passage that _________.

A. the lack of sleep can lead to children’s excitement

B. radiation from the mobile phone can cause parents’ worries

C. many children use mobile phones before sleep

D. using a mobile phone before sleep doesn’t harm the aged

It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ilan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the stranger’s over-spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade(交易)for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.

At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair(公平的) to exchange a yet to be determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town!

We ended up writing our IOU’s with promises in a lot of ways if he needs it, such as a book, some paintings and the offer of work. I think the idea isn’t that the trade is “equal” so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.

We don’t buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don’t give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other’s company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible(明智的).

Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.

1.Ilan did not take any money that day in order to______.

A.to increase awareness of people’s over spending

B.have a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip

C.trade for something for nothing

D.buy nothing that day to save some money

2.For the meal, the author finally offered Ilan______.

A.some promises B.a book

C.some paintings D.work in different ways

3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “transaction”?

A.transport B.trade C.meal D.giving

4.What is the author’s attitude to Buy Nothing Day?

A.Disagreeable B.Meaningless. C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.

Big Bubbles

We all love bubbles. They float through the air like little glass balls, shining with colors and light. You can make bubbles with dishwashing soap and a paper cup. Soap makes the water stick together in a round shape. The bubbles you blow will be really big!

Here’s what you will need:

• A large bowl • A spoon • 4 cups of water

• 5 tablespoons of dishwashing soap

• A pair of scissors

• A paper cup

Follow these steps(步骤) to make big bubbles:

1. Fill the bowl with the water.

2. Add the dishwashing soap into the water and mix them together.

3. Cut a small hole in the bottom of the paper cup. This is the hole that you will blow through.

4. Dip the top rim of the cup into the soapy water. Slowly lift the cup out of the bowl. There should be a thin “window” of soapy water filling the open space of the cup.

5. Slowly put your mouth up to the hole in the bottom of the cup. Gently blow air through the hole. A big bubble will rise into the air! For  a party, you can make a bowl of soapy water and a paper cup bubble-blower for each friend. If your friends do step 4 and 5 again and again, just think of how many bubbles you can make together!

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.People can make bubble-blowers. B.Bubbles are shining with colors.

C.It is easy to make big bubbles. D.Everyone loves big bubbles.

2.Which step tells you to add dishwashing soap into the water?

A.Step 1. B.Step 2. C.Step 3. D.Step 4.

3.To blow more bubbles, which two steps should you do again?

A.1 and 2. B.2 and 3. C.3 and 4. D.4 and 5.

Is creativity a natural gift like good looks, or is it something that it can be acquired like knowledge? If we analyze the creative process careful, we might know what it is and what it might work. The creative process has always accepted as the source of all important works in the arts, so we should not think the creativity plays a role only in the arts. Every major scientific discover begins with someone seeing the world differently from the way others sees it. And this is which creativity is all about—imagining the world in the new way. We all have the potential to imagine the world in an absolutely new way. In fact, we are born for it.

    1. Spanish people drink Coca Cola, wear blue jeans, watch Hollywood movies, listen to American music, and eat fast food, and they do all these things daily.

I think that American movies are a good way to spread American culture because often people are influenced by what they see in the movies. Most of the entertainment programs and documentaries we watch on TV are from America, and most of the movies we go to are made in Hollywood.

2. Now, in our cinemas, at least twenty percent of the movies which are shown must be from Spain or from other countries in Europe.

American culture is very much a part of Spanish life. It’s certain that many things from America are as much a part of their lives as Spanish things. For example, Coca Cola is as familiar to everybody as any typical Spanish product. 3.

However, it’s different with western fast food. For example, I don’t think McDonald’s is as successful in Spain as it is in other countries. In my opinion, one of the reasons may be the life style of the Spanish people.4.

On the other hand, it may be that McDonald’s hamburgers will eventually replace the famous Spanish tapas. It’s true that in every city in Spain you can find a McDonald’s, and they are more popular among the Spanish children than among the adults.5.

A.Many Spanish people like to watch movies.

B.The Spanish people normally eat at home.

C.I’ve known Coca Cola my whole life.

D.Most Spanish people prefer to eat in restaurants.

E.The influence of America is increasing in my country.

F.In the last few years, the government has tried to protect the Spanish movies.

G.In any case, it’s obvious that American culture has become a part of our lives.

During Amsterdam’s chaotic rush hour, nine-year-old Lotta Crok cycles to a very busy crossing. “Look,” she says. “There’s traffic coming from everywhere. Four buses from four different directions. For a child on a bike that’s really confusing!”

Lotta is the first junior cycle mayor in the world and her working area is the Dutch capital. You would think this challenge would be superfluous in a city known as the bicycle capital of the world. The number of bicycles in Amsterdam is estimated at 810,000 more than the city’s 750,000 inhabitants and 63% of the population cycle daily.

But children who cycle in Amsterdam face challenges. Lotta says: “The three biggest problems for us are cars, cycling tourists and scooters(小型摩托). The cars take up too much space, the tourists are always swinging side to side and stop when you least expect it, and the scooters simply run you over.”

Lotta became junior cycle mayor in June last year when she won a contest in which school children were asked to come up with plans to make cycling safer and more fun. Her idea was to add children’s bikes to the popular bike share programme.

Since Lotta was appointed junior cycle mayor, she has been busy giving interviews, opening cycling contests in the city and being a jury member during the Amsterdam Light Parade, an event in which Amsterdammers decorate their bikes with lights.

She is now planning a meeting with the city’s mayor to discuss ideas that children have come up with: “One of our proposals is a bicycle park where children can learn how to cycle. Right now, most of us learn it in the street, which can be quite busy. Another idea is to create an app for tourists to teach them the rules of cycling, because most of them really don’t know.”

Following the success of the Amsterdam plan, cycle mayors around the world are now planning to appoint junior colleagues. “They see it works really well,” Boerma, the senior major, says. “I talk to the parents. Lotta talks to the children. And if you look at the city through the eyes of a child, you will also make it accessible for others. A city that’s good for an eight-year-old is also good for an 88-year-old.”

1.Why is a junior cycle mayor appointed in Amsterdam?

A.To teach children how to ride.

B.To ensure cycling is safer for children.

C.To give suggestions to the city’s mayor on how to run the city.

D.To organize the cycling contests in the city.

2.Which word can best replace the underlined word “superfluous” in paragraph 2?

A.Important B.Unnecessary C.Difficult D.Valuable

3.What’s Boerma’s attitude to the junior cycle mayor?

A.Favorable B.Cautious C.Ambiguous D.Disapproving

Rocky Lyons was five years old when his mother, Kelly, was driving along the country road with him. He was asleep on the front seat of their truck, with his feet resting on her lap. As his mom drove carefully down the winding country road, she turned onto a narrow bridge. The truck hit a rock and slid off the road. She attempted to bring it back up onto the road by pressing hard on the gas pedal and turning the steering wheel to the left. But Rocky’s foot got caught between her leg and the steering wheel and she lost control of the truck.

The truck fell into a 20-foot ravine(峡谷). When it hit bottom, Rocky woke up. “What happened, Mama?” he asked. “Our wheels are pointing toward the sky.”

Kelly was seriously wounded and blinded by blood. “I’ll get you out, Mama,” announced Rocky, who had surprisingly escaped injury. He climbed out from under Kelly, slid through the open window and tried to yank(用力拉)his mother out. But she didn’t move.

“Just let me sleep,” begged Kelly, who was out of consciousness. Rocky insisted, “Mom, you can’t go to sleep.”

Rocky managed to push Kelly out of the truck and told her he’d climb up to the road and stop a car to get help. Fearing that no one would be able to see her little boy in the dark, Kelly refused to let him go alone. Instead they slowly moved up to the road. The pain was so great that Kelly wanted to give up, but Rocky wouldn’t let her.

Rocky kept repeating the inspirational phrase, “I know you can, I know you can.” When they finally reached the road, Rocky broke into tears seeing his mother’s torn face clearly for the first time. Waving his arms and shouting, “Please stop!” the boy stopped a truck. His mother was sent to hospital.

It took 8 hours to rebuild Kelly’s face. She looks quite different today---“I used to have a straight long nose, thin lips and high cheekbones; now I’ve got a flat cheeks and much bigger lips”--- but she has few scars and has recovered from her injuries.

Rocky’s heroics were big news. Everyone was surprised at this little boy’s power. “It’s not like I wanted it to happen,” The boy explained. “ I just did what anyone would have done.” “If it weren’t for Rocky, I’d have died,” said his mother.
