In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Paragraph1: Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus.

Paragraph2: The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces.

A little battery puts out a little bit of electricity, so you can use it safely for your experiments. But the electricity that comes through the wires in your house or school is much more powerful. 1. .

Inside the walls where you live or study, there are big wires that carry electricity. When you plug in a light or radio or other electrical appliance, you are putting the light or radio in the path way of the electricity. You have heard adults warn, “ 2.‘ Now do you know why? If you did, you would become part of the electrical path way.

3. The electrical current coming through the wires to the wall plug is so strong that it would hurt a lot if you stuck your finger in the plug. Put your finger in there and it could be you, rather than the light bulb, that becomes part of the electrical path way. And that would hurt!

What if you held a piece of metal, like a fork or knife, and stuck it into the wall plug? Don't do it. Why? It's because metals also conduct electricity. 4.

Don't touch any electrical appliance when you are wet. Can you think why? It's because water is a good conductor of electricity. When your hands are wet or when your body is in a bathtub full of water, the electricity could flow right through you and give you an awful shock, or even kill you.

Electricity is very useful, but it can be dangerous. 5.If so, electricity can better serve you, instead of hurting you.

A.Life is precious!

B.So stay away from wires.

C.Be careful, be safe and be smart.

D.And you would get a terrible shock!

E.Don't stick your finger into the wall plug.

More than 40% of the insects around us could become extinct in next few decades. Simultaneously, the population of the adaptable and general species like that of houseflies, cockroaches and fleas is likely to bloom.

Although some species of insects are vectors (带菌者)of serious diseases, or others destroy crop, but a world without insects is inconceivable. Their importance in interconnected ecosystems and food chains can never be undermined. Insects have essential roles in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems as herbivores, carnivores and decomposers.

There are 17 times as many insects as humans, and these numbers are essential for proper functioning of all ecosystems. Insects are responsible for pollinating around 75% of the crops in the world and also serve as food for other creatures. They replenish soils and keep the number of pests in check.

The primary cause of this extinction is loss of habitat. Be it the grasslands or wetlands, everything is vanishing in man's quest towards intensive agriculture and urbanization.

Another cause of this decline is the excessive use of pesticides, fertilizers and introduced invasive species. As if this wasn't enough, climate change and pollution of all sorts have already started worsening their lives. Climate change may also cause emergence of new pests and other vector-borne insects.

The biggest threat of Insect Armageddon comes from Germany, where 75% of insect population have declined in just 30 years and from Puerto Rico, where due to 2 degree rise in temperature, there has been 60 fold decline in invertebrate (无脊椎的)population since the 1970s.

However, the fact that insects getting extinct is a global crisis is undisputed. But the neat thing about insects is, we all can do our bit to save them. We all can maintain pesticide-free kitchen gardens and organic farms. We can plant flowers and trees and invite them to nest again.

Maybe this tragedy would have never arisen in the first place and you would not have to read this article, if the world had stopped using all kinds of pesticides immediately after Rachel Carson had published the Silent Spring. Conserving the insect biodiversity is not our responsibility. It is a necessity because if they go, so will we.

1.Why can't we stand a world without insects?

A.For their parts in global ecology.

B.For their longer history than humans'.

C.For their shockingly large population.

D.For the appearance of new insect species.

2.What does the underlined word '"undisputed" in Paragraph 7 mean?

A.Possible. B.Doubtless

C.Exact D.Flexible.

3.Which of the following may best explain the extinction of insect species?

A.Climate change.

B.Human activities.

C.The abuse of chemicals.

D.The agriculture.

4.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.Calling on us to do something to save insects.

B.Introducing the urgent situation insects are facing.

C.Presenting us ways to handle the global crises.

D.Treating differently beneficial and harmful insects.

Recent years have witnessed the growth of luxury(奢侈品) brands. It's clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image.

I am a fashionista too, at least in spirit I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don't understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that's a scary thing.

What's interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn't lead to happiness.

Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don't suddenly become "happy" people. In fact, a series of studies have shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those on material things. That's because experiences are more easily integrated into a person's identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me. Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things" are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.

It's natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn't tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style.

You don't have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.

1.What's the author's attitude towards luxury consumption?

A.Favorable. B.Negative. C.Positive. D.Unconcerned.

2.What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph?

A.Material things can't bring about joy. B.Experiences sink into personality.

C.It's better to invest in experiences. D.Others' preference is of importance.

3.Why are Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in the text?

A.To honor the two successes. B.To advocate their experience.

C.To support the author's argument. D.To inspire young people's ambition.

4.What is the underlined sentence intended to express?

A.Do mind your financial security. B.Do try to make more money.

C.Don't rob a bank for luxuries. D.Don't spend much on your image

The "cloud war" is taking place as the dispute between the United States and China about data hacking and computer network security grows stronger. Chinese companies such as Alibaba, Baidu and Huawei are expanding within their country and gaining customers in other countries. They are creating data centers in multiple countries and trying to sell data management services throughout the world.

The increasing competition in cloud computing and storage incurs the new challenge and worries some experts. They are concerned about the safety of data. After all, companies often use the cloud to store important, confidential information and to operate such activities as data-driven machinery, telecommunications, banking and transport systems — including plans for driverless vehicles.

Lee Branstetter is an associate professor of economics at the Heinz School of Policy and Management of the Carnegie Mellon University. He told many multi-national companies "have serious concerns about the protection of their intellectual property (知识产权)."Branstetter said some of these large companies already believe they have lost valuable information.

Sheila Jasanoff is the director of the program on science, technology and society at Harvard's Kennedy School. She called the cloud computing industry "unruly". In other words, the industry is not strictly governed.

"People in the business are making rules as they go along or taking advantage of the lack of rules," Jasanoff said. She said cloud computing companies are not clear about what security measures they are promising customers. She is worried that a major accident may happen before governments realize the need for stronger rules in the cloud computing industry. She believes there should be internationally-accepted rules to meet the new challenge. But she does not believe an international agreement will be reached anytime soon.

1.What does the "cloud war" refer to?

A.The war up in the sky.

B.Some kind of cold war.

C.The China-US relationship.

D.The competition on the "cloud".

2.What concerns some experts according to Paragraph 2?

A.Information security.

B.Wars among countries.

C.The storage of “cloud”.

D.The lack of technology.

3.Which of the following may be consistent with Jasanoff's opinion?

A.A major accident is bound to take place soon.

B.An agreement is to be reached in the near future.

C.The cloud industry needs guiding and monitoring.

D.Governments have kept an eye on cloud industry.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.China's Rise or Not

B.New War, New Challenge

C.Chances on Cloud Information

D.Growth of Cloud Computing Industry

Writing poetry can seem frightening. However, with the right inspiration and approach, you can write a poem that you can be proud to share with others in class or with your friends.

A poem might start as a piece of a verse, a line or two that seems to come out of nowhere, or an image (景象) you cannot get out of your head. You can find inspiration for your poem by doing writing exercises and using the world around you. Once you have inspiration, you can then shape your thoughts into a poem.

You may also be inspired by going for a walk in your neighborhood or to your favorite spot in the city. You may observe people on a park bench or in a public square as the inspiration for a poem. You could try writing a poem about a person who is important to you in your life, such as your mother or your best friend. You could use the person as inspiration for your poem.

You can start your poem by focusing on a specific theme or idea that you find attractive or interesting. Picking a specific theme or idea to focus on in the poem can give your poem a clear goal or point. This can make it easier for you to limit what images and descriptions you are going to write around the theme of “love and friendship”. You may then think about specific moments in your life when you experienced love and friendship based on your relationships with others.

There are many different poetic forms that you can use, from free verse (自由诗) to sonnet to rhyming couplet. You may go for a poetic form that you find easy to use, such as free verse or a form that you find more challenging, such as sonnet. Choose one poetic form and stick to that structure so your poem feels cohesive (连贯的) to your readers.

3.If you’re a beginner at writing poems, you’d better choose ________.

A.free verse B.nursery rhyme

4.What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Some forms of poems.

B.Some tips on how to write poems.

C.The author’s experience of writing poems.

D.Some tips to overcome the fear of writing poems.

Endurance (耐力) cyclist Mark Beaumont has announced plans to go around the world in 80 days on his bike, which would break the present record. To be successful, Beaumont will have to complete the 18,000 mile route in less than half the time he took when he set the record nine years ago. He will also have to knock about 40 days off the present world record.

Beaumont, 34, will begin his difficult journey on 2 July and will have to travel 240 miles a day to get around the world on time. Beaumont set the world record in 2008, completing his cycle around the globe in 194 days.

As a warm-up to the trip, he will first cycle around the coastline of Britain. The 3,500-mile, 15-day training ride will be at “80 days” pace and will see Beaumont cycle for 16 hours and 240 miles per day.

The cyclist said his average day would see him on the bike at 4:00 and riding for four sets of four hours with half-hour breaks in between. “I’ll get off the bike at 9:30 at night, get some sleep until the alarm goes off at 3:30 and then get back on the bike.”

He said: “I cycled around the world nine years ago but that was unsupported, wild man-style, trying to find clean water and a place to sleep. This time it is Tour De France-style. I have a support team behind me and it is just about performance. That makes a huge difference.”

Beaumont said he thought cycling round the world “sounds like a good idea”. He said he had cycled across Scotland as a 12-year-old boy and had been doing endurance rides for the past 20 years. “I know what I’m taking on,” he said. “It scares me, but I believe this is possible.”

B.He cycles16 hours and 240 miles per day.

C.He starts cycling at 3:30 am every day.

D.He will have two breaks during the cycling every day.

3.Compared with the 2008 world tour, the advantage of the coming tour is that ________.

B.it will probably cost less money

C.Beaumont needn’t find places to sleep

D.the cycling equipment is more advanced

4.How did Beaumont feel about the coming world tour?

Last winter, I visited my sister and brother-in-law’s house and had to park in a nearby parking lot because they didn’t have accessible parking. The snow was extremely heavy and there was lots of ice on the ground — not many people had ventured out that evening!

When I returned to my car around 11pm, I noticed that only my car was left there. Nervously, I quickly got into the car and let it warm up a bit. When I finally tried to drive away, my wheels began to spin. I was stuck! I spun and spun and wondered what to do.

All of a sudden, in my rear view mirror (后视镜), I saw four teen-aged boys approaching my car. They were walking side by side in a line and dressed a bit like gang members — at least I thought that’s what they looked like. My car was in a very isolated area and I began to panic. I was certain they were coming to my car to harm me. Terrified, I just froze. One of the young men tapped on my window and said “Excuse me, Ma’am, can we help you? How to raise a sweet boy in an era of anger

Hours after I gave birth to my first child,my husband held our five-pound boy in his arms and said, gently,"Hi,Sweet pea."Not“Buddy”or"Little Man."Sweet pea.The word filled me with unexpected comfort.Like most parents,we knew what we'd name our son but never discussed how we'd speak to him.I was witnessing my husband's commitment to raising a sweet boy.

Because this is what the world needs now, urgently:sweet boys and people who grow them.

There are so many angry men among us.There are angry women, too, but they're only beginning to claim this emotion that has long been denied them.Women 's public anger is the kind of anger that gives girls voices, such as MeToo.But men 's anger tries to shut down the voices of others.Today's angriest women encourage people to solve a problem;today's angriest men murder.

A man uses his car to murder an anti-Nazi protester.A man shoots a congressman at his baseball practice.A man commits mass murder at a Vegas concert.A man kills a large number of worshipers in their church...

The world has turned so upside down that it is impossible for a man to display his vulnerability(脆弱)。Walk into any baby store, and you can see clothes for newborns declare, TOUGH LIKE DADDY”"。They don't receive explicit encouragement to fully access their emotions.Boys have always known they could do anything;all they had to do was look around at their presidents, religious leaders, professional athletes,at the statues that stand erect in big cities and small.Girls have always known they were allowed to feel anything- except anger. Now girls, led by women, are being told they can own righteous anger. Now they can feel what they want and be what they want.

What about boys? The boy taught from infancy to be tough still seems emotionally doomed. It's time to change.

We don't need to raise kids with gender neutrality or deny natural differences between boys and girls. We do need to recognize that children, regardless of gender, have natural sweetness that we,as a society, would do well to develop and preserve.

Sweet boys grow up to be men who recognize the strength in being vulnerable and sympathetic.Sweet boys are children who've been given,by their parents and wider society, the permission to feel everything and to express those emotions without shame.

At a young age, this should be done explicitly,in organized discussions at school. It must be done all the time in our family homes.Parents must invite their sons to be sad, afraid, hurt, silly and affectionate, and must embrace them as often as they hug and kiss their daughters.Sweet boys learn early on that they can defend themselves against loneliness by reaching out and asking for support rather than turning into people who, literally, grab for power.Sweet boys evolve into open-hearted men who aren't confused about consent and sexual boundaries, because they experience women as equals.Boys will not be merely boys.If we let them, boys will be human.

Kemira Boyd had just jumped in the shower when she heard her stepmother, Tammy Boyd, banging on the door. Kemira's 12-day-old daughter was choking. Having fed baby Ryleigh just 30 minutes earlier, the 24-year-old new mother burst out of the bathroom and began patting her daughter on the back. Ryleigh was usually quick to cry. Now she didn't make a sound. “I'd been told to raise their arms when babies are choking, so I tried that, but she still was hesitating to breathe,” Kemira told Today. She knew Ryleigh needed to get to the hospital fast.

The trio had barely made it out of their Summerville, South Carolina, neighborhood when the flashing lights of a police patrol car appeared behind them. Deputy Will Kimbro figured that the speeding driver was either too distracted to notice him or simply unconcerned. (1) Kimbro soon found cut it was a frightening combination of the two.

Once she had pulled over to the roadside, a crazy Tammy jumped out of the car, exclaiming that her granddaughter had stopped breathing. Desperate for help, Kemira handed the baby to Kimbro. He put a hand on her little chest. Ryleigh's heart was barely beating.

Kimbro radioed for an ambulance-it was seven minutes out, and the hospital was even further away. That was seven minutes Ryleigh didn't have, her lips already a bad shade of blue.   He is a school resource officer who usually spends his days patrolling the halls of the middle school ten miles away. But he travels farther away when school is out in the summer. Even luckier: he had recently completed a CPR class and knew exactly how to treat a baby. “Although I was shocked, my training kicked in, and I went to work to keep that baby alive,” says Kimbro.

The deputy gave Ryleigh to Kemira to hold, his hands busy as he checked for a pulse. Then he began tapping and pressing Ryleigh's chest, hoping to massage her heart back into action. Thanks to the CPR class, Kimbro knew the choking baby didn't have a chance if there was a blockage, and he used one finger to clear her airway. That was the magic touch; 20 seconds later, Ryleigh began to fuss. Then came a weak crying sound. “If she is crying like that, she is breathing, said kimbro, the relief apparent in his trembling voice.” As long as she is crying, she is breathing.

But they still had five more minutes until EMT would arrive, and Kimbro worried that Ryleigh would be unable to breathe again. He continued with delicate chest compressions and periodically clearing her airway. “The whole time I was thinking ' Do not let this baby die in front of her mother and grandmother',” he later told Inside Edition.

In the body cam footage, Kimbro can be heard reassuring Kemira, the approaching sirens wailing in the background: “I didn't feel a heartbeat earlier, so I started massaging her heart, and now I feel it. It's real strong now.”

After transferring Ryleigh to an EMT, Kimbro peeked into the windows of the ambulance until it pulled away.  At the hospital, Ryleigh recovered quickly, and she was back to her usual active self in no time-thanks to a determined school police officer who was in the right place at the right time. Said Kimbro to the Washington Post, “That baby was living no matter what I had to do.”

The Covid-19 disaster will have many losers, but it already has one clear winner: big tech. The large digital platforms, including Alphabet and Facebook, will come out of the crisis even stronger. They should use this good chance to reset their sometimes tense relations with their users. Otherwise the government is likely to do it for them.

Demand for online services has exploded and the infrastructure behind the internet has proved to be admirably reliable. Newcomers such as Slack and Zoom, which help businesses operate remotely, have become household names. Facebook has said that messaging activity has increased by 50%in those countries hit hard by the virus. Amazon is planning to hire 100,000 new staff to keep up with higher e-commerce.

Just as the big firms are standing even taller, many of the tech industry's younger, smaller firms are being crushed since the dotcom crash 20 years ago. Even before the coronavirus hit. trouble was starting to develop .Among many firms catering to consumers, the strategy of growing at all costs had turned out to be problematic, Some firms had already started laying off people. All this will make it easier for the big firms to hire the best talent.

If that happens, it is likely that regulators will do little or nothing to stop a round of expansion. In America antitrust(反垄断) investigations against Alphabet, Google's parent. and Facebook have essentially been put on hold, as officials deal with other priorities during a crisis. A new federal privacy law seems further away than ever. Even tech skeptics in the European Union want to rethink their approach to regulating artificial intelligence(AI). In an abrupt twist, big tech's business practice is essential to deal with the virus. Yet before Covid-19,such activity would have caused howls of great anger over privacy and prejudice.

In fact, more than ever it is clear that big tech firms play vital roles. There lies the trap, because almost everywhere other big firms, such as water or electricity, are heavily regulated and have their prices and profits capped(规定限额). Once this crisis passes, concerned citizens and governments could make a push for the state to have similar control over big tech.

The companies seem to sense this danger. Their best defence is to propose a new deal to the citizens of the world. That means clear rules on how they publish and moderate content, helping users own, control and profit from their own data, as well as fair treatment of competitors that use their platforms. This approach may even be more profitable in the long run. Today the most valuable firm in America is Microsoft, which has been more successful by building a reputation for being trustworthy.

1.The writer suggests the big techs use the outbreak of Covid-19 to      _

A.escape from the crisis of large digital platforms

B.improve their relationship with their users

C.ask for help from the government

D.demand more online services and reliable infrastructure

2.What has led big tech firms' business to increase rapidly?

A.The crush of the tech industry. B.The strategy of growing at all costs.

C.The stricter antitrust investigations. D.The loosened government regulations.

3.What does “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.The easier access of best tech talents to big tech firms.

B.The severe unemployment rate in companies.

C.The fast spread of the coronavirus.

D.A new round of expansion of big firms.

4.In Paragraph 6,Microsoft is used as an example of___.

A.benefiting from good relations with its users B.catering to consumers whatever they want

C.sensing danger from other big firms in time D.being heavily regulated by the government

Researchers have confirmed that there are several effective methods for cleaning the N95 masks worn by health professional so that they can be used more than once, the National Institutes of Health announced Wednesday.

A research already showed that the masks, designed for one-time use,can be reused in a crisis. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March authorized reuse because of shortages driven by the Covid-19 pandemic.

None of these rules or methods are intended for the cloth masks recommended or in some locations required for use by everyone in public.

Earlier research had not,of course, involved the new coronavirus. The new research determined which cleaning procedures were most effective.

N.I.H.publicized the study because it could be helpful to health care professionals in the crisis.Dr.Munster and his colleagues tested four methods of killing the virus:UV light, dry heat, vaporized hydrogen peroxide(YHP)(汽化过氧化氢)and ethyl(乙醇)alcohol.Of those methods, they did not recommend ethyl alcohol because although it killed the virus,it degraded the mask material.

Vaporized hydrogen peroxide,a method often available in large hospitals, was effective, and left the masks still functioning for at least three rounds of cleaning,as did UV light.

Dry heat,at 70C,was effective, but the masks withstood only two rounds of cleaning.Dr. Munster said that"vaporized hydrogen peroxide would be the method of choice if that's available."However,he said,a nursing home might not have that, while for dry heat, what's needed is basically an oven.

Another recent study from Canadian researchers confirmed the value of cleaning. It included masks of different brands and found that the material of the mask was still effective after 10 rounds of vaporized hydrogen peroxide cleaning.

The findings are intended to be useful for health care workers wearing N95 masks. With personal protective equipment in short supply at many overwhelmed hospitals, some front-line workers have complained that masks were rationed.

The public has been advised not to use or try to buy N95 masks because they would be preventing health care workers from having lifesaving equipment.

1.Of the different cleaning procedures of N95 masks, which one is the least effective?

A.UV light B.dry heat

C.vaporized hydrogen peroxide(VHP) D.ethyl alcohol

2.In a dictionary, the underlined word"ration”has the.following explanations.Which explanation do you think agrees with the context?

A.a fixed allowance of something that is scarce

B.the amount of something one normally has

C.to assign to someone for a particular purpose.

D.to restrict the distribution of something

3.What's the main idea of the passage?

A.The public has been advised not to use N95 masks.

B.The health care workers are in great need of N95 masks.

C.N.I.H.announced N95 masks can be reused if cleaned effectively.

D.Personal protective equipment is in short supply at many hospitals.
