In our daily life, many of us feel stressed more or less. Some like this pressure and work better because of it. Others are not comfortable with any stress at all; they soon become unhappy if they feel stressed. Sometimes stress can lead people to do things they wouldn’t usually do, such as overeat, smoke, drink, or use drugs. Stress, however, is a very normal part of life.

It is important to understand that stress doesn’t come from an event itself, that is, from the things that are happening in our lives. It comes from the meaning we give to what has happened. For example, a crying baby may be stressful to one person, but it may not bother another person at all; a traffic jam may be stressful to one person while another person may be able to stay calm.

We can experience stress any time we feel we don’t have control. It can come from a feeling that we can’t do anything about a situation. Basically, it is the body’s way of showing anxiety or worry.

Stress is not just caused by our mental or emotional condition. It is also influenced by how tired we are, whether we have a balanced diet with enough vitamins and minerals, whether we get enough physical exercise, and whether we can relax.

The key point of relieving the stress is that we need to find what is causing the stress in our lives. Once we have found it, we should try to change that part of our lives. If we believe that we can control stress, we can begin to control our lives. Then we can start to use stress in a positive way.

We knew Sylvia and Jack had problems with their flats, but we hadn’t been told the details. Not until they came for a weekend in October, that is.

At dinner on the Friday evening Kitty said, “You wrote that the flat wasn’t quite what you expected. Of course it could be too small. You’re sharing with another couple, aren’t you?”

“Were sharing, Mother,” Slyvia replied.

“It really wasn’t necessary,” Jack explained proudly, “I’ve had a big rise, and we can easily manage. It’s much better to be independent.”

“Oh, much,” I agreed.

“What was the trouble?” Kitty asked, impatient and unwilling to let her go.

“Nothing much,” Sylvia said, “The flat is fine. It was the other couple, Sally and Tom Ford. You’ve never seen such an untidy pair. We shared the sitting room and the kitchen and the bathroom anfd got fed up with the mess of it all.”

“And what made it worse,” Jack put in, “was that they accused us of the same sort of thing. Tom and I nearly came to blows when he locked up some of their wedding presents we were all using, as they used ours, naturally.”

“You take a chance when you make a sharing arrangement.” Kitty said.

“I am in my own flat,” Sylvia said, “Sally and Tom left a month ago.”

“We could have left instead,” Jack said, “But why we should leave? After all, the flat was in our names, not theirs. We were glad to see the back of them.”

Two weeks later Kitty and I returned their visit for lunch on Sunday. It was the first time we had been to their flat. To say that we were shocked is not true, because we know our daughter extremely well. The flat had fairly recently been in quite good condition; it was now a chaos. I did not know how anyone could possibly live there. But Sylvia noticed nothing.

B.she was really expecting to live in her own flat

C.she felt tired of cleaning and tidying up their rooms

3.What did Kitty mean by saying “You take a chance … sharing arrangement.”?

A.Sylvia and Jack would take steps to deal with the problems.

B.Syliva and Jack were lucky to learn to share with others.

C.Sylvia and Jack might have problems when living with others.

D.Sylvia and Jack loved to manage their own affairs.

4.From the passage we can learn that ________.

A.Sylvia and Jack were spoiled by their parents

B.Sylvia and Jack were a pair of great ability

C.Sylvia and Jack had fights with Sally and Tom

D.Sylvia and Jack were in fact an untidy pair

How to be Cool on Instagram(抓拍神器)

Instagram is a game. Gaining likes and followers is no easy task unless you’re a beauty. But your social media luck is about to change, because a social media talent can help you to step up your Instagram game.

1.. My teenage sister, Grace, routinely breaks 150 likes on Instagram, no sweat, because she just gets it. 2..

1. Timing is everything

You can’t post photos willy-nilly. So when do you actually post? Sunday evening is “prime time” for likes, because everyone is bored and not doing homework. And it also implies to the real world.

2. 3.

People don’t care how much you’re feeling your look. No one needs to see eight pictures from your date night out. Remember, as my sister recommends, “You can’t give the people too much or they will be over it very quickly.”

3. Selfies(自拍)have strict rules

Basically, don’t just go around throwing up random selfies like the world is ending tomorrow. It’s not a cute look. Here’s what my sister had to say about selfies: Be spontaneous(自然率真)and fun. TBTs (Throwback Thursday) have to actually be TBTs. 4.. Instead, use TBTs for cute baby pictures and awkward middle school photos. It’s funny, according to the resident teens.

4. Putting your account on private is unnecessary

You should set your profile to public because you should have nothing to hide. Also, it gets you more followers, which is what you’re after. 5.. For it’s Instagram, after all. In the wise words of the teen, “Life is too short. Eat dessert first.”

A.Here’s what to do and, more importantly, what not to do

B.Most importantly, have fun and don’t take it too seriously

C.Gaining likes and followers is very interesting

D.Teenagers are tastemakers

E.Don’t post too much

F.Don’t be selfish

G.You aren’t fooling anyone if you TBT a recent photo

Last summer, bird-watchers confirmed the discovery of a new species of bird in Cambodia(柬埔寨): the Combodian tailorbird. It was not an event of particular biological significance but it was striking for one reason: This species of tailorbird was discovered not in an unspoiled rain forest but within the limits of Combodia’s capital, Phnom Penh.

We don’t typically think of the city as a likely habitat for natural life except rats and pigeons(鸽子), let alone as a hiding place for an undiscovered species of bird. But a new paper, published last week in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, proves it incorrect. A team of 24 researchers has studied birds and plants in 147 cities, and found that cities much more closely resemble their native habitats than they resemble each other.

It’s also true that in the world of birds and plants, as in human society, there is such thing as a world species who feels equally at home in Francisco, Milan and Beijing. Four birds appear in more than 80 percent of the cities studied, and 11 plants in more than 90 percent of the cities. On the plant side, those include meadow grass, shepherd’s purse, weeds. In the air, it’s the usual species: the pigeon, the house sparrow and the European starling(惊鸟). They all have become completely adapted to urban life.

However, not all cities are equal protectors of plants and animals, though. City design plays an important role in greening a city. In fact, the amount of green space is a stronger predictor of the biodiversity than a city’s size.

In a world where architecture, food, language, fashion and commerce are increasingly globalized, a city’s native plants and animals are considered as a kind of city identity. Cities tend to become similar, but their natural environments stand differently apart.

1.What does the author think of the discovery of the Cambodian tailorbird?

A.It is just an exception.

B.It is a wonder for the Cambodians.

C.It is an amazing biological event.

D.It is very common in the world.

2.Weeds and sparrows are found in many cities. This seems to be a result of ________.

A.complete adaption

B.natural selection

C.good urban design

D.rapid globalization

3.We can learn that while cities tend to become similar, their natural environments ________.

A.are becoming worse

B.remain diverse

C.are expanding in size

D.stay unchanged

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A.The Discovery of New Species of Bird in Cambodia

B.The Similarity of the Habitats in Different Cities

C.City’s Native Plants and Animals—A Kind of City Identity

D.City—Protector of Native Plants and Animals

Robots will have taken over most jobs within 30 years leaving humanity facing its “biggest challenger ever” to find meaning in life when work is no longer necessary according to experts.

Professor Moshe Vardi, who works in Rice University, says that many middle-class professionals will be assisting the work of machines within the next few decades leaving workers more leisure(休闲)time than they have ever experienced and as a result, the rise of robots could lead to unemployment rate greater than 50 percent.

“We are approaching a time when machines will be able to do better than humans at almost any task,” said Vardi, “Robots are doing more and more jobs that people used to do. I believe that society needs to face question before it’s upon us. If machines can do almost any work humans can do, what will humans do? The question I want to put forward is, ‘Does the technology we are developing finally benefit mankind?’”

Prof. Vardi said existing robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies were already getting rid of a growing number of middle-class jobs and that pace of advancement in the field is increasing.

But Prof. Vardi is not sure that a workforce of human like robots will be good for mankind. “A typical answer is that if machines will do all our work, we will be free to pursue leisure activities,” he said. “I do not find this a promising future, as I do not find the idea of leisure-only life appealing. I believe that work is essential to human well-being.” He added, “Humanity is about to face perhaps its greatest challenge ever, which is finding meaning in life. If machines can do all the work or even 50 percent of the jobs that we used to do, what will people do?”

1.According to the text, what is human’s “biggest challenge ever”?

A.The most challenging jobs.

B.Seeking the significance of life.

C.The rise of unemployment rates.

D.No necessary work for humanity.

2.What is Prof. Vardi concerned about?

A.Whether robotic and AI technologies are good for humans.

B.Whether robots can rule humans within 30 years.

C.The unemployment rate is increasing greatly.

D.The development of robots is rapid enough.

3.What does Prof. Vardi think of the leisure-only life?

A.Realistic and comfortable.

B.Unpleasant and unattractive.

C.Entertaining and pleasing.

D.Disgusting and annoying.

4.We can infer from the text that we ________ in the future.

A.will be in short of labor force

B.can have a surplus of products

C.have to face fierce competition

D.may lose the value of life

Like Indiana Jones (a fictional character), who undertakes daring adventures in his spare time, my father is a businessman by day and a thrill-seeker by night.

His enthusiasm rubbed off on me, and I have been lucky to be his companion on many adventures. We started out by riding America’s fastest, most twisted roller coasters. After that a whitewater rafting trip through the Grand Canyon(峡谷)on the Colorado River started our search for other extreme thrills across the globe.

Amazing thrills awaited us at every corner of the world. Skydiving was especially thrilling when performed from a helicopter over the breathtaking Swiss Alps. We have bungee jumped from the world’s highest platform, Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa. Most recently, in Interlaken, Switzerland, we attempted canyoning(溪降运动).

Anyone who loves a challenging thrill should try canyoning. Our adventure began with a 90-foot rope down a canyon wall into a rushing ice-cold river. Then we crossed the bone-chilling water toward the mouth of the river, our final destination, where the reward for the journey would be a whole view of the beautiful Interlaken basin. We slid over slippery rocks at one moment, jumped from waterfalls and swam through underwater tunnels the next. Back and forth we alternated, climbing rope ladders before going back into the fresh mountain water. Certainly, danger was waiting for us in each of these activities, but that very danger provided the rush. Canyoning was indeed one thrill after another, from beginning to end.

While canyoning is possible only in certain places, thrills and adventure can be found anywhere. Our beginnings in the U.S. showed us just that. We continue to seek the big thrills, but in doing so, we have learned to seek lesser excitement in daily life as well. After all, we can’t go canyoning every day, and small thrills are better than none for us thrill-seekers.

1.What do we know about the author’s father?

A.He is a very successful businessman.

B.He is doing a part-time job.

C.He likes Indiana Jones very much.

D.He enjoys experiencing adventures.

2.What does the underlined phrase “rubbed off on” mean in paragraph 2?

A.relate to B.keep off

C.affect D.confuse

3.What did the author and his father do when attempting canyoning?

A.Jumped down from waterfalls and swam across the icy water.

B.Jumped down a canyon river and crossed it.

C.Climbed over a rope ladder and swam through underwater tunnels.

D.Climbed down a canyon wall and swam across the rushing icy river.

4.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.Small thrills in daily life are worth a try as well.

B.We had better go abroad to experience canyoning.

C.Canyoning is not suitable for everyone.

D.America is the most proper place to experience adventures.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was the first time that my father had asked me to help him. By the time we finished, herring (鲱鱼) covered the bottom of the boat as deep as my knees. For the first time in days, my father seemed happy.

Then he looked at the western sky, and his smile disappeared.

They are called Northwesters. They're storms that sweep out of Canada hard and fast. No one can predict their arrival. All fishermen fear them.

“We're going back,” my father said.

He started the motor. We were only two miles out, but the shore looked to me to be as far away as the moon. Over the distant hills, black clouds ran toward us like wild horses. My father set a course directly for them.

We made it only halfway home before we met the storm.

The wind came first. It lifted the lake in whitecaps. The weight of the herring made us ride low in the water, and the waves broke over our bow(船头).

By the time the rain came, we'd put more distance behind us. Although we were now only half a mile from shore, the rain fell so hard that we couldn't see the land.

I was scared, but I saw my father sitting straight in the stern(船尾), holding the boat steady into the wind, and I felt hopeful.

I was starting to think we were going to make it. That's when the motor died. My father tried many times to restart it, but failed. I saw that the boat was coming about. I knew what that meant.

We would sink in no time.

"Grab an oar(), "he shouted above the wind.

We set the oars in the locks and began to pull hard. My father dug his oar into the water, bringing the boat around, bow into the wind again. With all my strength, I pulled on my own oar.

The wind pushed hard against us. We seemed to be fighting the anger of the whole lake.

Why I Love Cycling

One of the first things I did when I moved to a new city was to hire a bike. Why?1.You travel much faster than on foot and you notice so much more of your surroundings than when in a bus or a car. It’s more appealing to wander down small streets if they seem interesting, as you can quickly get back to the main road.

Besides, I soon discovered plenty more benefits to cycling. A bike means that fewer places, especially in a small city like the one where I live now, feel far away. For example, cycling to work takes me half the time that it would to walk.2.For example, I planned to go to a concert on the other side of town. While my cyclist friends and I simply looked at a map, our friends without bikes had to deal with the complicated bus system.

Of course, there are obvious health benefits of cycling—a bit of extra movement as part of your daily routine can help you keep fit and healthy. Cycling on my way to work also makes me feel more energetic in the mornings.

3.While cars pollute the environment, bikes are carbon-neutral. Furthermore, thanks to being petrol-free, bikes are cheaper to run, buy and fix than cars. Even if you don’t own a car, a bike can pay for itself when compared to the price of bus tickets.

4.Always wear a helmet, pay attention to other traffic and don’t forget your lights at night. Make sure you know the road rules, especially in a new place. Some cities are more cycle-friendly than others.5.Luckily, where I live now is pretty easy to ride a bike around, thanks to having lots of cycle lanes and not too many hills!

A.However, be careful when cycling.

B.A bike means more happy time with your friends.

C.I have to learn to ride safely on the right of the road.

D.Importantly, cycling also helps to reduce your carbon footprint.

E.Riding a bike also means you’re not restricted by bus timetables.

F.And sometimes city roads are difficult or unpleasant for cyclists.

G.Seeing a city by bike is ideal for settling in and learning your way around.

Slowly but surely, we're moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in our life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay. Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the US top out at an average of 19. 42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆)speeds.

“5G is one of those heralds (使者),along with artificial intelligence , of this coming data age.” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data ageand that is to sayit is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It's pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, and also connected infrastructure (基础设施)construction. There is lots of data behind that task, which is why we need the high speed.

And virtual reality glasses and headsets haven't yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smart phones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist— or even replace — smart phones.

Ericsson stated at February's Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power.

But don't get too excited. There is still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure construction so 5G isn't concentrated only in big cities.

1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.A right security of 5G. B.The super speed of 5G.

C.A potential dream of 5G. D.The present world of 5G.

2.What do some tech companies expect of virtual reality glasses?

A.They will be heavier than present ones.

B.They will process power on their own.

C.They will serve people instead of smart phones.

D.They will bring a big fortune to tech companies.

3.What will the author tell us in the next paragraph?

A.How to fully expand 5G coverage.

B.How to effectively reduce 5G trials.

C.How to nicely operate 5G hardware.

D.How to widely construct 5G big cities.

Although most people believe that owning a business or working on an idea means you are an entrepreneur (企业家), the reality is that entrepreneurship is so much more than just these two things. It is about the ability to innovate (创新) by helping society progress. For those who aspire to become real entrepreneurs, the path to turn your thought into entrepreneurship is one that requires you to know yourself.

Recognize what skills you are good at. Everybody wants money. But many fail to realize that money is the extension ( 延伸) of your skills, so the most important aspect of learning to make money starts by knowing what skills you have. Make a list of your skills and you should see where your strengths lie. The goal with this exercise is to recognize what skills you are good at naturally. Make good use of them until you finally change more of your skills into usable abilities for your business.

Make use of your confidence to create belief. Confidence is a result of repeating one thing. The more you practice doing something, the more confident you become in the process needed to see it to the end. Starting a business requires confidence, so most people who have zero confidence in the process fail to get started because it is an unknown area. You have to believe in the idea, the process and the ability within yourself to bring your business project to life. Without confidence, belief doesn't exist; without belief, the chances of giving up are high.

Allow your love to become enthusiasm. The last ingredient outside of your skills and confidence is the ability to focus on ideas that you feel enthusiastic about. Having passion will push you to struggle for something you love and turn that longing into action. The goal is to identify topics of interest so that you can start showing some aspects of passion as you start your project. The closer a project is to your heart, the less pessimistic you will become when results don't go your way.

1.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A.It is very difficult for us to know our skills.

B.Knowing your skills is the first step to learn to make money.

C.To recognize your skills will surely make your business successful.

D.To recognize your skills is more important than making money.

2.What's the importance of enthusiasm for us?

A.It can help us find out what we love.

B.It can make us never feel pessimistic.

C.It can push us to work hard on our goals.

D.It will make us succeed in whatever we are doing.

3.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.The advantages of confidence.

B.The ability to focus on ideas.

C.Why people want to be an entrepreneur.

D.How you can go from ideas to an entrepreneur.

Recently I accepted a challenge to join Naasih, a motivational speaker, on a voyage through India designed to refresh my spirit. After too many hours, Naasih and I arrived in the slum(贫民窟) just as the sun was breaking across the smoggy Delhi sky. It seemed as if the small houses extended for miles, an ocean of tin roofs and laundry lines.

Finally, Naasih stopped and turned to me. “Give me your bag,” he said. I handed it to him. I had promised to follow his directions, and in return, I was hoping to find whatever I thought was missing from my life. “I will meet you back here at sunset,” Naasih said and walked away.

I began to walk through the streets. No one paid too much attention to the tall, hairless man walking among them. My throat was dry, my stomach turning over with hunger. And then I saw a small house and I knocked softly on the door.

A young, skinny man, no older than 25, came to answer it. As I soon found out, the man is named Sankar and he was a Lakers fan. I also learned that he was a recently graduated university student who had left his family to go after a dream of success in the big city. Instead, he had found work in the back of a restaurant.

After lunch, Sankar took me to play basketball with a group of children in a trash-filled field down the road. The sun was beginning to fall as the laughter of the basket games echoed (发出回声) across the slum. I had been so caught up in my day with Sankar. I had started the morning in fear and exhaustion, but I was ending the day connected to something much larger.

After the game, Sankar and I walked to Rata Road. There stood Naasih. He said, “You’re shining, Leon.” I had been knocked entirely out of my comfort zone, and I felt that wild burst of life that had been missing from my own.

1.Why did the author come to Sankar's home?

A.To relieve his hunger and thirst. B.To respond to Naasih's request.

C.To learn how disadvantaged people live. D.To play a game with him.

2.What can we learn about Sankar?

A.He studies cooking in university. B.He finds a good job in the city.

C.He doesn't live as he dreams D.He has a great talent for basketball.

3.What does Naasih mean by saying “You're shining, Leon” in the last paragraph?

A.Leon is an inspiration to him. B.Leon has changed his state of mind.

C.Leon is popular among the children. D.Leon is good at connecting with others.

4.What is the best title of the passage?

A.The Pleasure from Indian Slums B.The Power of Sport Games

C.A Voyage for Finding the Self D.A Chance to Make Acquaintances

UK physicist Isaac Newton once said, “ Nature is pleased with simplicity and nature is no dummy (傻子).” Indeed, Mother Nature can provide almost everything human beings need if we follow her rules. But if we break the rules, she is likely to be cruel.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (新型冠状病毒肺炎,NCP in China and some other countries at the beginning of this year is an example. According to Xinhua News Agency ,the new coronavirus is similar to a virus found in a bat in 2017 and probably has an intermediate host (中间宿主).If it is believed that the virus originated from the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, Hubei province, where live wild animals were sold.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Dr Peter Daszak, president of the US-based health organization EcoHealth Alliance, said, “This outbreak is a lesson for us. On a global scale, human population density (密度),wildlife diversity, and land use change are what drive new pandemics (流 行病).”

In ancient times, people needed to rely on nature to survive so they held it in awe (敬畏). For example, the American Indians believed that humans are a part of nature and nature is a pail of humans. Chinese ancients always pursued the harmony between nature and human beings.

However, as human beings master more knowledge and make more advanced tools, people try to change and even conquer nature. They use more land to make buildings, genetically modify plants, capture some wild and rare animals to suit their own needs. In this process, humans gradually lose contact with nature and even throw it out of balance. For example, cutting a large number of forests means carbon dioxide must build up in the atmosphere and it contributes to global warming.

Although we don't know for sure what first caused the NCP outbreak, Brian Lamacraft at Medium said it's time for people to'' reflect on our relationship with our plant" reconnect with this world and everything that we've been given". After all, according to US poet Gary Snyder, " Nature is not the place to visit. It's our home."

1.Why does the author give the example of the NCP in Paragraph 2?

A.Because it results from humans going against nature.

B.Because it has caused widespread suffering.

C.Because it broke out at the beginning of this year.

D.Because it is similar to another pandemic.

2.What lesson did Daszak think human beings should learn from the NCP outbreak?

A.Bats are one of the most dangerous wild animals.

B.It's impossible to prevent new pandemics globally.

C.We should stop the wildlife trade around the world.

D.Humans should live peacefully with nature.

3.What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?

A.How human beings become their own masters.

B.How human activities cause global warming.

C.How human beings break the balance of nature.

D.How humans use technology to improve their lives.

4.What is the author's purpose in writing this article?

A.To reflect on the NCP outbreak.

B.To explain what led to the NCP outbreak.

C.To describe experts, predictions on new pandemics.

D.To compare ancient and modem attitudes toward nature.

Many cultures around the world have a grain that is not grown or even known outside its home area. Now, a staple grain native to Ethiopia, teff, is appearing on grocery shelves in America.

Teff has been an important part of the Ethiopian diet for thousands of years. Like rice and wheat, it is a cereal grass. Teff is known for its fine grain and used mainly to make flour. Teff flour is the key ingredient in injera, the large, spongy pancakes that make up a large portion of the Ethiopian diet.

Teff was introduced to the United States by a man named Wayne Carlson, who learned about teff while doing public health work in Africa in the mid-1970s. "I came to know teff because I was eating it all the time and hosted by teff farmers. " he said. In the late 70s, Carlson returned to the U. S. , married and settled in southwest Idaho. Then he came up with an idea to introduce teff grass to his home state. " Geologically, it is very similar to Ethiopia."

Wayne and his wife Elisabeth are not farmers, nor do they want to be. So they convinced actual farmers in Idaho to grow teff on contract for them. The Carlsons milled it themselves.

Wayne went through the Washington, D. C. telephone book and looked for the names that were Ethiopian. And that is how the business slowly grew. Over time, the Teff Company has outgrown four different mills.

Rich Roseberg is a food researcher at Oregon State University. He says teff production has exploded over the past decade in the U. S. He says most teff grown in the U. S. is fed to farm animals. In Idaho, however, where the Carlsons are based, Roseberg believes more of the teff production is for human food. Teff contains lots of calcium, iron, protein and fiber. Roseberg credits Wayne Carlson for being ahead of his time.

1.How do the Ethiopians mainly use teff?

A.By eating the cereal grass. B.By using the flour made from it.

C.By adding the plant into injera. D.By mixing it with rice and wheat.

2.According to Wayne, why is it possible for teff to grow well in Idaho?

A.Idaho is located close to Ethiopia.

B.Teff is easy to survive on its own.

C.Idaho has geographic features similar to Ethiopia.

D.Teff was originally introduced to Ethiopia from Idaho.

3.What can we infer from Paragraph 5?

A.Wayne's teff did not sell well at first.

B.Wayne's teff was sold only to Ethiopians.

C.Wayne sent teff to his Ethiopian friends.

D.Wayne lost control of his Teff Company.

4.What is Rich Roseberg's attitude to Wayne introducing teff into America?

A.Worried. B.Disapproving.

C.Favorable. D.Pessimistic.

Many people have heard the story of Nessie, Scotland’s Loch Ness monster. Yet, have you ever heard of an ice monster in the American state of Alaska?

An ice monster is what many people thought they were seeing when a federal government agency published a strange-looking video. The Bureau of Land Management put the video on its Facebook page.

The pictures were taken in Alaska, the northernmost part of the United States. While winter has yet to officially begin, weather conditions there already are very cold.

In the video, a fish with ice on its back appears to be swimming. The video was only 20 seconds long. But it was enough to get people wondering what they saw.

One person said it showed a shark that lost its way. Someone else thought the video was a prank designed to cheat people. He said the Bureau of Land Management wanted to bring attention to its Facebook page. Other people asked if the video was edited in some way, removing some images or adding others. Perhaps, they reasoned, the bureau was trying to frighten people around the celebration of Halloween. Some people said the ice monster was a large fish: a sturgeon(鲟). Someone even suggested the creature was a crocodile. But such an animal could not survive in Alaska, where it does not get very hot, even in summer. Some readers said it was ice moving in the river current, or ice that was frozen to a rope or some other object.

On October 31, the Bureau of Land Management published an update. It agreed with some of the people who commented on the original piece. An expert from the Department of Fish and Game told the bureau the picture looked “really cool”, but it was probably just ice stuck to a rope. The ice caused the rope to float and move in the river’s current.

Even though the mystery seems to be solved, some people do not seem persuaded. Others are still wishing it was a “real” monster.

1.What is the author’s main purpose in asking the question in Paragraph 1 ?

A.To encourage readers to answer it.

B.To open a discussion among readers.

C.To arouse people’s interest in Nessie.

D.To introduce the topic of the passage.

2.What does the underlined word " prank” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A.Puzzle. B.Dream.

C.Trick. D.Advertisement.

3.The monster couldn’t be a crocodile because .

A.a crocodile can’t swim so quickly B.the temperature is too low in Alaska

C.a crocodile only moves in summer D.it doesn’t look like a crocodile at all

4.According to the expert, what is the ice monster most likely to be?

A.A shark losing its way. B.A large fish: a sturgeon.

C.A sea creature like Nessie. D.A piece of ice frozen to a rope.
